Syncing AppleTV

Hello,
I'm curious about something. When I purchase a movie on the AppleTV and later sync my iTunes to it, the ATV sends the movie to my MBP and clears it from memory from the ATV. So, in order to keep the movie on my ATV, basically I either don't sync, or sync twice - once where the movie is transferred OFF the ATV to my MBP and then again when it shows up in iTunes on my MBP and i send it BACK to the ATV.
Obviously this process is annoying/time consuming/ridonkulous and I'm hoping it's my fault by having something check in iTunes that makes it this way. Any thoughts as to how I might resolve this??
Thanks!

Hi Chenks,
So, I'm fine with it sending the movies/tv shows to the "master location," but it's a bit ridiculous that I have to send it back again. There is no way to also keep the material on the ATV when it syncs to the "master source?" Considering it takes me about 20-30 minutes to sync a movie and then my router gets totally confused and drops the internet connection, syncing to the ATV is a bit frustrating at times.

  • Sync AppleTV with multiple accounts' iTunes library on the SAME Mac

I was wondering if this was supported in the new 3.0 release. I found an archived thread from 2007 which stated this was not supported but wondering if anybody was successfully doing this, or has a work around for getting both my and my wife's iTunes libraries (on the same Mac) to sync to the AppleTV.
    Thanks!

no, you can still only sync from 1 itunes library.

  • Sync AppleTV with a second computer

I set up AppleTV with an iBook and everything worked beautifully. I bought a second laptop, which I'd now like to be the computer that syncs with ATV. Unfortunately, I can only make it stream to ATV at this point. What do I have to do to make my newer laptop the main syncing computer to my ATV? Thanks!

Not sure if I read your question right. But, once you remove the sync from the 1st computer, the TV will take off any content that was synced to it (does this as way to maintain copyright and all that in case you were going to give it to another person, etc).
Then when you tell it to sync to your other computer, the other computer will get the extra tabs for sync options in it's iTunes (not sure if you noticed, but only the one that syncs has options for all that...others on network can just share/stream).
So when you go to your other laptop (new one) you choose what you want to sync and it will all copy back down to the AppleTV. Could very well be all the same stuff if you copied your content all over or if you are using a common share on yoru network. But yes, first the AppleTv will drop all previously synced content, then with new synced computer, it will send back whatever that computer has set to sync.

  • PC that ITunes was on died.  Have 2 synced AppleTV's and various backups...

    OK,
My dedicated laptop that I used for running Itunes just died and I really don't want to go to the trouble to get it running again.
I have two AppleTV's that have my complete music library synced. I have an IPod classic, IPhone, and IPod touch that all synced to the Itunes library as well, but they don't have complete versions (too small). I also have several backups of the laptop hard disc I could restore.
What's my best bet for installing ITunes clean on a new computer, getting my libary on it, and getting my various other apple devices paired up with the new Itunes install?
The ideal would be if I could install Itunes, pair it with one of the apple TV's and tell it to get it's database from the appleTV instead of visa versa, but I assume that's not possible. Even if I could do that, I assume that will also hose my Iphone apps (which aren't on the AppleTV).
Also, any way for me to deauthorize the old PC for DRM tracks (even though it can no longer boot)?
    Thanks for any pointers!

  • Have to provide my Wireless Network password EVERYTIME to sync AppleTV

Is this right? Everytime I want my AppleTV to sync to my iTunes I have to go onto AppleTV and put in my password for my Wirless Network (Airport Express with AirTunes). Is this normal? Also my AppleTV always drops away from "Devices" in iTunes after that tedious sync I just described above......am I doing everything correctly? why does it keep dropping it? Sometimes if I close & reopen iTunes it finds my AppleTV, but rarely......and I don't want to have to do this each time I want to resync my AppleTV. Thanks in advance,
    Chris

    - Did you look at iTunes->Preferences->Apple TV (icon), is "Look for Apple TV" checked? Also on the same dialog box you should see apple TV listed.
    - I had something similar also. "Apple TV" disappeared from my iTunes device all the time (so i could not change sync settings), it started to happen when I turned the wireless security ON (even when ATV could see my iTunes library). I finally found the problem. This was the solution, maybe it could help you also?
    1) Go to iTunes preference and go to Apple TV as described above. Remove Apple TV if it is listed.
    2) Go to your Applet TV, select "Sources" from the Main menu. Select Resync off and on. Now you we will see the security number that should be entered on iTunes.
    3) On your iTune enter the security number.
    4) Now the "Apple TV" device should be back in iTunes and watch out it will resync everything, it takes a while, also check your sync settings, because the originals will be lost, as what type of movies, photo library you want).

  • Syncing appletv 1st gen

i'm totally new to appletv, so bear with me... i just got a 1st gen 160gb version.. just a basic question when syncing..
the first time i did a sync, i put all my itunes music (maybe 20gb), a few southparks, all my photos, and some podcasts on there.. total of about 25-30 gb (sorry i didn't pay attention to the exact amount).. it took quite a while, on a wired connection.. then i went to add some movies from my external hard drive on my network, and from what i can tell, it wiped the appletv clean, and started to re-sync everything.. like starting from scratch.. not just leaving what was already on there in place, and adding movies.. but deleting the appletv entirely, and re-syncing all the stuff that was already on there all over again, and adding the movies after that.. is this how it will do it every time?
i guess my point is, with my iphone, you make moderate changes, it updates only the changes, not wiping it clean and taking forever to re-sync everything?!?! i could be totally off base, or just not understand any of this. but it takes so long to sync this appletv, if i wanna add a few things, i don't wanna re sync for a million hours to add a few new photos, or songs, cuz it does a bare bones from scratch delete and re load

Firstly if you want control you should ensure that you have Custom Sync enabled for the AppleTv by going into the Device setup tabs for AppleTV 1 i iTunes.
Be aware that by default content not synced over to the hard drive will stream automatically when itunes is running and appear merged in the AppleTV lists with the synced content - this can confuse as when you shut iTunes it looks as though lots has disappeared from AppleTV. (you can choose show only synced items in Settings in itunes)
So firstly confirm you've got custom sync set up in Settings tab in iTunes.
You cannot drag and drop to AppleTv like a custom iPod management, you must do it via individual tabs in AppleTV device in iTunes.
Pay attention to the dropdown optinons too which may cause watched material to be replaced by unwatched when AppleTV space is low.

  • Syncing AppleTV and a connected iMac

Does anyone know how to get movies purchased on AppleTV synced with iTunes on a connected iMac?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
They will only transfer mac to a synced library, are you sure your library isn't streaming only.

  • Syncing AppleTV transfers HD and SD episodes???

    Hello,
I have googled this a few times, but I can find no answers.
When I sync a movie or TV episode from my iTunes library to my AppleTV (the older silver one) both the HD and SD versions of the videos are copied over.
Is there a setting I may have missed like the "prefer HD where availble" on the iPhone?
    Thanks.

My 40GB ATV hard drive filled up quickly after I started buying HD TV shows and when it was full only the HD episodes were syncing. Once some of the space opened up after enough watched videos were unsynced, both HD and SD versions started syncing.
I don't know if the problem is iTunes 8 or the fact that the ATV software hasn't been updated since HD TV shows started, but I expect we'll be seeing either an iTunes or an ATV software update soon that will fix this problem.

  • Sync AppleTV Podcasts to iPhone

Is there a way to sync the podcasts I have on my AppleTV to my iTunes/iPhone??

I don't think that you can sync them through the ATV, but I would try to locate them through the iTunes store and sync them to your phone that way.

  • Does AppleTV sync both the HD and SD versions?

    Hi,
When you sync AppleTV with iTunes on your MAC does it copy SD versions of a TV shows to AppleTV along with the HD version?
My iTunes on my MAC is appears to be showing that the AppleTV has both, but I'm not sure.
    Cheers.

I don't know whether you've noticed or not, but you never see purchased/rented content etc in that list, that tends to tell me the origin of the list comes from iTunes and not from the tv.
I was wondering if that was the case also, but I couldn't seem to phrase it correctly.

  • ITunes cannot sync photos to AppleTV . . . unknown error occurred (-50)

Whenever I try to sync photos via iTunes with AppleTV using iPhoto as the source in the Photos tab, I get the following error message "iTunes cannot sync photos to AppleTV because of a problem on your computer. Unknown error occurred (-50)." I can sync all other media and even photos so long as do not sync it from iPhoto as a source (e.g., syncing from file folders not a problem).
I tried everything that I could think of: disconnecting and re-syncing AppleTV, restore to factory settings AppleTV and basically re-installing it, re-installed iPhoto, updated iPhoto library. I have also checked to make sure Slideshows in iPhoto are not linked to any music that may have ampersand or some other strange symbols. I have updated AppleTV to version 3.0.1, iPhoto has been updated to version 8.1.1 (iLife '09). OS is 10.6.2.
I am going crazy in trying to fix this problem but so far it is a dead end. Exporting slideshows is not a very attractive option as it takes forever. This "error" happened about a week ago when I was putting a slideshow together in iPhoto and then tried to sync it with AppleTV. First, went through without any problems, second - error message and that is where I am currently stuck.
If someone has ANY ideas how to resolve this, I would really appreciate your thoughts.

  • AppleTV sync for *.wav (DTS) and photos

    Hello,
I am using AppleTV with s/w 2.2 and sync with imac using itunes 8.01.
What I get over and over is this:
    1) by the time of sync, AppleTV does not seem to find the photos I selected to be synced and as a result all are deleted from AppleTV
    2) *.wav files : Itunes states 'cannot play these files' and also deletes all from AppleTV immediately
when I then restart syynchronization, AppleTV / Itunes recognizes all the above and starts to upload again
This is however annoying as we talk about 40 Gbyte -
does anybody have any resolution for that ? thanks for any feedback

  • Album art does not sync

So, after I updated to 1.1 I am having trouble with album art synching..
I only have DRM free MP3..
    1. When Syncing: For certain albums, album art has ceased to sync, even tried to embed album art into mp3 with no luck. Files play OK, however..
    2. The same songs that do not have album art when syncing, are not playable when streaming.
    3. AppleTV has become unstable, after each sync, AppleTv will reset and ask again for TV resolution settings.
    Anyone having the same issues?
Will turning back to 1.0 have the clock issue?

In respect of the album art have you tried the following:
    1. Open itunes and select a troublesome tune/movie.
    2. Choose file/show in Finder and note the location of the original file.
    3. Delete the tune/movie from your itunes list (not in the finder) choose 'remove' and 'keep files' when prompted
    4. Drag the original file from the Finder back to itunes.
    Does this help
In regard to the unstable behaviour of the tv, how are you connected to the tv. Have you tried a restart as opposed to a full restore, which would mean going back to v 1.0 and updating to v 1.1 again.

  • How can I transfer all data in ATV to my new computer(HDD)?

Last week, my macbook broke and replaced new HDD. All data in previous HDD has gone but some musics and pictures are still in ATV luckily. Please advise how I fetch the data from ATV to my new HDD just installed to my macbook.

Thanks for your adivse. reg 2), how do I hack my apple TV?
Not really something that can be discussed here in detail.
Did you have Time Machine running? If so you may be able to pull back iTunes files.
    what is SSH? please adivse.
If you don't know I think hacking might prove daunting for you.
I've not hacked my AppleTVs so can't offer advice one way or another but I suggest you do not update your AppleTV to 2.2 yet, and you must not sync AppleTV to a new itunes library or it'll trash the exisiting content.
    Google 'AwkwardTV' and 'AppleTV hacks'.
Personally I'd say that your safest option is probably to dismantle the AppleTV and connect the internal drive to a Mac via a USB or Firewire enclosure then manually track down the files - copy them only and don't alter anything on the drive. This would of course void any warranty - depends how important that stuff on AppleTV is.
It also emphasises the importance of backing up stuff regularly though in practice we may not do so as often as we'd like.
    It also highlights two things:
1 - There really should be a method of accessing stuff from AppleTV by manual drag and drop. I really don't understand why they don't implement it as your kind of issue is very frequent and you'd really thank Apple if that feature were available.
2 - Currently AppleTV must not be regarded as external storage or a backup copy of iTunes files/photos. It is not designed to be a backup but with a little software enablement it could clearly to this. I suspect connection via USB would be frowned upon as people might try and access system files, but a 'rescue mode' via iTunes perhaps accessed via the diagnostics/system restore/reboot menu would be ideal.

  • Will Apple TV make my wife forgive me...

...for converting her from a film photographer to a digital photographer? She tells me all the time that all the pictures that she has shot over the last five years are simply gone to her because she can't see them. She uses an old Dell laptop with a 40 gig hard drive and can't fit all her pics on that. She is not going to be lugging around some external hard drive connected to the laptop, nor is the screen big enough to really show the pics. I have a nice macbook pro computer that does have enough room to store all the pics but she doesn't use that computer at all, nor would I be happy if she decided to start using it.
I have two different thoughts at this point. One is to get the new, cheaper 160 gig Apple TV and then load onto it all her pictures (which are mostly currently stored on backup DVDs that I burned from the Mac) and let her use the Apple remote to look at the pics on the big screen TV. But I would prefer if I did not have to store all the pics on my Macbook Pro laptop in order to keep them synced with the Apple TV. Can I just simply copy the pics to the Apple TV and then, after backing the pics up from my hard drive to an external drive, delete those files from my internal hard drive? Or does Apple TV require that things on Apple TV have to exist on my laptop?
The second thought was to buy a cheap nettop or netbook with lots of hard drive space and let her use that browse and view pics.

It'd also be worth considering what sort of numbers of photos you're talking about here, and are they JPGs, RAWs, fairly small size, huge, from point and shoot or DSLR.
To be honest I think AppleTV is a great way to show photos, but as Winston notes they are handled a bit differently to other things.
I'd personally be tempted to set up another user account on your Mac under her name, create a new iPhoto library (hold option when opening) on an external drive and use that as the account default. Then sync AppleTV with this account and external iPhoto library having added all the photos to it.
Depending on her degree of computer literacy you may need to add the new stuff to the library from time to time but you would not then need the stuff on your laptop.
160GB will offer lots of storagve potential, especially as you could potentially downsize very large photos for TV display if AppleTV was running low in space.
