Syncing by Audio

Hi there,
When syncing by audio, what's happening when I offset the audio frames from the video frames?
I was looking around for official documentation on this, but couldn't find any.
I'm thrilled that the new Premiere Pro CC (7.0.0) can sync by audio. I can cut out PluralEyes from my workflow entirely. I'd just like to know what's happening when I modify the numerical value for "Offset audio by _ video frames" when I generate a new multi-camera source sequence.
Operators of older DSLRs, like the T2i, 5D Mk II, and 7D, know that these cameras' own internal audio tracks are out of sync with their video, usually having their video tracks lag behind their audio tracks by a single frame or two, depending on the camera.
Does this feature actually offset video and audio within a clip that has its audio and video tracks linked? Does it look for isolated audio tracks that have no video associated with them and simply offset those from the video clips that do have audio? I noticed that isolated audio tracks are automatically moved to A1 and are soloed, so they seem to have special priority.
Also, which direction does the offset move the tracks? I'm assuming I can put in positive or negative values and get different results.
Please help!

OK, I ran some experiments. I started with a large absolute value of 24 so that I would really notice what was going on, hoping to see stuff about a full second out-of-sync.
Test 1:
Footage used:
Frame-accurate FS100 AVCHD MTS footage
Frame-inaccurate 5D Mark II H.264 MOV footage
No separate audio tracks unassociated with video
Operation:Value set to 24 [positive]
Results:
FS100 audio was synced to 5D audio
FS100 video remained frame accurate with its own audio
5D video remained out of sync by a frame with its own audio
Test 2:
Footage used:
Frame-accurate FS100 AVCHD MTS footage
Frame-inaccurate 5D Mark II H.264 MOV footage
No separate audio tracks unassociated with video
Operation:Value set to -24
Results:
FS100 audio was synced to 5D audio
FS100 video remained frame accurate with its own audio
5D video remained out of sync by a frame with its own audio
At this point, I determined that no offsets were being manifested within the original clips themselves. Now it was time to add in an audio track unassociated with any video.
Test 3:
Footage used:
Frame inaccurate 5D Mark II H.264 MOV footage
One separate audio track unassociated with any video
Operation:Value set to 24 [positive]
Results:
Lone audio track synced to 5D audio
5D clip remained out of sync with its own video by a frame
At this point, I thought I had done something wrong, or missed something, because even Test 3's lone audio track manifested no offset with the other clips. Just to make sure that I wasn't missing anything, I increased the offset to 48 frames in Test 4, hoping for the tracks to be a full two seconds out-of-sync.
Test 4:
Footage used:
Frame inaccurate 5D Mark II H.264 MOV footage
One separate audio track unassociated with video
Operation:Value set to 48 [positive]
Results:
Lone audio track synced to 5D audio
5D clip remained out of sync with its own video by a frame
Test 5:
Footage used:
Frame inaccurate 5D Mark II H.264 MOV footage
One separate audio track unassociated with video
Operation:Value set to -48
Results:
Lone audio track synced to 5D audio
5D clip remained out of sync with its own video by a frame
So, as far as I can tell, the feature is actually completely non-functional. This is pretty annoying, Adobe! I still use these older DSLRs, and would love to actually be able to rely on this feature!
I'll submit a bug report.

If it's an Audiobook, then it's probably in the Audiobook section of your iPhone. Have you set your iTunes to Sync Audiobooks with your iPhone?
Alternatively, if the Audiobook was imported into your iTunes Library as as Music, then it's going to be in the Music section of your iPhone. If so, then it will be in the Music section of your iTunes Library. To move it to the Audiobooks section, select it in the Library and choose File/Get Info/Options>Media Kind where you can change it.
You can change it to a Podcast, but since something is only a Podcast if it is delivered to your iTunes as a Podcast download (which is a process for delivering files without you having to go and find them), then your audiobook is not a Podcast and you may forget (in the future) how you obtained the book in the first place

  • How do i sync h4n audio to my video

I work for the YMCA and we recently purchased a ZOOM H4N digital recorder to use in conjucting with my Canon t2i for video recording. I also use a Sennheiser lapel kit.
Basically I found a way to use Match Audio where it blends the audio from the t2i with the Zoom, but is there a way to automatically sync my audio file with the the camera audio file, but only use the audio from the ZOOM H4N?
Thanks for any help you can give!

You use the sync clips function to sync the audio and video, and in the inspector's audio tab switch off the audio from the camera.

  • Work flow for syncing separate Audio files with Video files in FCP

It may be too late for me to use this workflow that I want with my current project, but I need to figure out what it is anyway for future reference.
Right now I'm editing a movie which is near completion. When we recorded the movie, the camera's deck recorded reference audio from the sound guy at 48k @ 16bit. This audio also went through an additional set of preamps which added a small amount of noise. So we don't want to use the reference audio because of it's low resolution and less clean audio. The sound guy recorded straight to his deck at 48k @ 24bit, besides the better resolution, his audio is noticeably better.
The camera deck and 'clapper' (I think that's what you call it) were not connected or synced. So the video files and the soundsguy's audio files are slightly different lengths, but at least have a 'clap sound' to manually sync to. And I don't mean that the audio and video files won't play in sync with each other, I mean that the soundguy always started recording before the camera, so his audio files have slightly different start and stop times.
Could I have synced the audio files with the video files before I started editing this project? If so, could it have been in the way that the soundguy's audio would be connected to my video files while editing? What would that procedure have been?
My current workflow right now is I have my finished sequence, I change the bit rate to 24 in Sequence Settings, and start manually dragging the soundguy's files to the sequence for every little edited clip. This is going to take forever, there are 99 scenes in this movie. Anyway, at the end of the day these sequences are exported as .omf files and imported into Pro Tools for audio post production.
I was not thinking to figure this out before I started editing the movie, this is unfortunate, a newb move in a decent production.
Anyway, I don't know if there is a standard for this situation or if I just opened up a can of worms for many possible workflows. Please comment if you have experience in this area or please refer me to any reading material.
    Thanks for your time!
    -Monty

The normal workflow (besides manually syncing up before editing!)
is to have ' some ' way of auto syncing the clips.
So you must have common timecode.
With external audio, you can slave the cam's TC to the TC output of the BWF recorder.
Then you can use BWF / QT merge (one of my apps) to sync them, or use Sync 'n Link.
    (another third party application)
If it is not possible cause you're shooting with a cam without a TC input, you can record the TC output on one of the audio tracks of your cam, and use FCPauxTC reader to decode the beeps and translate that to QT TC, and again use the former tricks to sync them.
It is difficult when you have never done it, but very easy once you get the hang of it, and it saves a huge amount of time to do it right from the start.
Have a look at the FCP aux TC reader here:

  • Can't sync Zoom audio with the one of the videocamera...!

    HI!
I have filmed a theatre performance with a Sony NEXVG10E. I have also recorded the audio directly from the stage on a ZOOM H4n.
I have put both the A/V from the camera and the audio from the zoom (a WAVE 44.1 stereo) on a sequence in FCP6. Then I have tried to sync the audio of the camera with the audio of the zoom... There was no way of doing that.
I've tried marking the zoom audio, snapped it to the right marker of the sony audio but they match only where I put the marker. After that, and before that, the zoom audio seems to slow down on its left and right tails.
It seems like there is a perfect sync wherever I put the marker (remember: there are two audio, the zoom one and the sony one which, fortunately, is perfectly synced with the video...): as long as I move left or right the two audio differ but it's the zoom audio that seems to fail! Do you have an idea about that? This thing is really bizzarre. May it be a FCP issue? The only thing I have done is to convert my AVCHD files (through Log and Transfer) to Pro Res 422.
    thanks!
    Alex

Thanks! This makes me wonder for an other project I am going to realize soon.
I am supposed to shoot a fake TV-Show with 5 different Canon 5D. I was thinking to record the audio separately.
This means that I will have some how to connect the cameras and the audio recorder to a "thing" in between that will be able to send a common timecode to both devices, the video and the audio ones. Right? Or maybe I should be able to feed the audio in all of the 5 cameras...?
I see that this question is offtopic, but, still, would you be able to suggest me a possible set up?
    Thanks again!
    Alex

  • I want to sync my audio with my pictures

I want to sync my audio with my pictures in iDVD and can't get it to work.  How can I do it manually?

All you can do in iDVD is select an audio track or playlist from iTune and set iDVD's slideshow Slide Duration to Fit to Audio:
If you have an older copy of iMovie, specifically iMovie 6 HD you can precisely set your music to yoru photos with fade outs and ins as you need:
It's, by far, the best version of iMovie for manipulating audio.

  • Sync Music audio with Video Audio PE10

    Hi.
I am new to Premiere elements 10 (Changed from Corel to Adobe, so i'm not new to video editing, but I'm not used to PE10).
I am filming a lot of my daughters Circus performances, so very often I find the music number used at the performance and merge that with the video audio in the project.
But I have a problem syncing the music from the audio track on the video with the seperate music track.
So to specify: I want both Audio tracks running at the same time, so that I keep the clapping and the whisteling from the audience, but get the better quality of the music from the external file merged with the music in the video-audio-clip.
Is there a special tool or can someone help me with a special tecnique?
    Regards Settemand

Along with the instructions offered above, when nudging the Audio, I would make sure that Snap is OFF, as Snap will try to align your Audio with the beginning (Head), or end (Tail), of you Video Clips. That is useful for many editing operations, but for nudging Audio will frustrate you. The Snap function is a toggle with the S key. Just do not forget to turn it back ON, when done.
Also, though the Soundtrack Audio Track seems to be the ideal location for your extra music, some users have experienced issues, when using it, or the Narration Audio Track. While it seems that those issues are Project-specific, and those Tracks often work well, to keep from being tripped up later, I recommend putting your music on a free Audio Track, such as Audio 2 - just to be safe.
Also, with either an Audio, or Video Track, you can Zoom IN/OUT horizontally with the Timeline Zoom slider, AND can also Zoom IN/OUT vertically, by going to the Track's Header (where the Track Name is located), then hovering your cursor over the little line between the Track, until it changes to an equal sign with up/down arrows, then click+drag, to enlarge the Track (and the Clip display) vertically. I find that this makes viewing the Audio Waveform Display easier, and the peaks are more obvious. When done, you can just reverse that operation to Zoom OUT on the Track vertically, so that it looks like it did, before you started.
Good luck, and this FAQ Entry might be useful, though it talks about OOS (Out Of Sync) Audio, the functions are the same for syncing additional Audio: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/436751?tstart=0

  • Multicam source sequence - audio offset does not work when syncing via audio

Working double sound with Canon 5D footage and syncing via audio is a big help, but the camera sound is one frame ahead of the video.
Merge clips requires each v/a clip pair be selected individually AND can't be slipped after merging - so that's no good.
Create multi-cam source sequence works a treat AND offers an audio offset BUT that does not appear to work when syncing via audio (I understand why you might think we wouldn't need it but...)
    Unlesss I'm missing something?

I have the same problem. Syncing video via audio in multicam works perfectly on my 3 cam shoot but audio offset does not work. Had to do that on the sequence timeline afterwards.

I understand your issue. This feature was not available in Premiere Pro CS6. Sync by audio is a feature of Premiere Pro CC, and later. Sorry about that. You can get the feature if you subscribe to Creative Cloud.

  • New keynote doesn't sync to audio nor can I figure out a way to make it easily go to YouTube

Keynote is something I've used for years.  Not a novice.  I usually took a presentation into garageband to perfectly sync the audio and any added sound effects.  No matter what I change the audio is off.  I've fiddled with delays, I've recut the audio moving it 5 sec. one way or the other.  Nothing is achieving the accuracy I'm accustomed to.  Also, there is no share to Youtube.  After I add the audio and record it and it appears to play in sync, something is lost in making the Quicktime movie I have to to be able to upload it to YouTube as a .mov.  I've spend hours with two different presentations and I'm very frustrated.
Can someone tell me what the problem is and if it's being worked on or is there a workaround for this?  Thanks for any suggestions.

  • Sync AC3 Audio to Video function problem

    Hi there,
I have an AC3 audio track with embedded time code and a video mpeg-2 segment with embedded timecode that I want to sync together. I use DVD Studio Pro 4.0.3.
In the help file it tells me to drag the audio from the Asset tab to the track editor while holding down the OPTION key.
But, when I do this, the track doesn't synch automatically and I have to do it manually anyway. Any thought on why it won't work ? It works on the Scenarist stations we have here and the tracks are made on profesionnal-grade encoders.
    Audio track (AC3)
    start time: 09:59:55:00
    end time: 10:59:36:12
    Video track (Mpeg-2)
    Start Time Code:09:59:59:00
    End Time Code: 10:02:41:07
I have searched the forums and support pages without finding any hints. Your help would be very appreciated. Thanks !

    4 x 2.5 Ghz PowerPC G5   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Thank you Colin. Yes indeed, I have read that part in the help file, but it just didn't make any sense to me at the time.
After running some test to figure it out, I found out that DVD Studio Pro will only sync my audio when the audio starting Time Code is later than the Video starting Time Code.
So in other words, DVDSP only adjust audio start time automatically but does trim the audio automatically, which is just a partial sync function according to me.
I sincerely hope that the development team will add this functionnality in a near future. As it is right now, the DVDSP auto-sync function is almost useless for us here. Moreover, the ability to sync AC3 audio to multiple video segment in the same track would be a great plus. I don't think it would be that hard to implement, but who knows ?
Well at least we can do it manually ! Thanks again Colin !

  • Syncing External Audio with Video on iMovie

If syncing external audio with video on imovie, once successfully syncing the 2 is it possible to permanantly merge them so that I can continue trimming and rearranging clips without having to continue to re-sync the audio and video after every change I make?

In Final Cut Pro X, yes. In iMovie...no.
The workaround in iMovie is to sync your external audio to the video clip. Mute the audio on the video clip so all that is left is the good audio. Then use SHARE/EXPORT TO QUICKTIME. Choose Movie to QuickTime Movie and under Options choose Apple Intermediate Codec as the Video Codec.
Then save this clip in a place you can find it. Finally, import this new clip back into your event.

  • Syncing external Audio to Video

    Hey Audiophiles!
Hope someone can help. I'm trying to sync using Audio recorded on a Zoom H4N to Apple ProRess originating from RED shot at 24 fps. The Audio seems to be at 30 fps ndf.
Audio was also recorded to the camera, so we have a reference and when I try to set an in point to do the merge clip option the audio is always offset by half a frame.
When I set my in point, I move my play-head in sub frame increments to be right at the beginning of the slate sound, and still, audio is off-set by half a frame which I cannot fix.
Any ideas? what's the issue? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

This is a comment from the guy at Singular software - $150 plug that quickly aligns your 2-system audio. He is specifically talking about DSLRs & H4N:
"...The FCP speed issue with the 5D (which some people fix with a 99.9% speed change) shows up in a different form for the 7D (which some people fix with a 100.1% speed change). But DON'T do either of those fixes, they will likely just cause problems somewhere else. Instead, just make sure that the frame rate in your Easy Setup matches the frame rate of your video. If you change the Easy Setup, restart Final Cut before making a new sequence. Don't ask why, just do it. And don't think that you can drag your clip to the timeline and have FCP autoconform the sequence and have it work--it doesn't. You have to go via the Easy Setup route.
If you follow that one simple rule you'll have no problems with timing issues with the 5D or the 7D..."
    (from HERE)
It seems like these kinds of issues are more prevalent when someone is using, for example, a 29.97 timeline with straight 30 fps footage. Or 23.98 footage in a straight 24 timeline.
But the HD-DSLR + H4N combo is a popular one in this new, emerging, still-cam-as-video-cam world. And there doesn't seem to be too much squawking. So somebody's making it work - somehow.
