Syncing multiple iPhones/iPads/iPods for different users via WiFi on a single computer?

So my wife and I each have an iPhone running iOS 7.0.3 (11B511), she has an iPad (iOS 7, but unsure of the exact release), and my son has an iPod (also iOS 7, but unsure of the exact release).  I've also have a Mac mini running Mac OS X 10.9 (13A603) with Server 3.0 (13S440) and iTunes 11.1.3 (8) 64-bit.  I'd like us each to be able to sync any of our devices via WiFi when we're at home.  We each have accounts on the server with thier own iTunes Libraries and associated with thier own iTunes Store accounts.
I've seen posts that explain how to sync multiple devices to a single account with a single library, and I've seen posts that explain how to sync different devices to different libraries under different users when each is the only user running iTunes at the time.  Is there a way to allow each user to sync whenever they please without having to have the other users log out of iTunes, log themselves in, and then sync?
It sounds like, from what I've learned so far, that multiple users running iTues is not (or at least used to not) be enough to make this work.  I'm looking for a definitive answer here though, not a guess that it can't be done based on previous versions or speculation.  If you're not sure but want to share your thoughts and theories only, please indicate as much in your response.  Thanks.

Welcome to AD!
Here is an article on using multiple ipods. I suggest method 1 and steer clear of method 3.

For your point #1, sharing music on same PC between users, put it in a shared library & set permissions as directed here

For #2, itunes doesn't have the capability to monitor folders for new content. You'll need to get something like the free program 'itunes folder watch'.

  • Best Way to Sync Multiple iPhones/Ipads

    Hi folks,
We're new to Apple computing and preparing for new iPhones and an iPad as a start. Would like to make sure we use the best setup for our main iTunes computer at home.
I understand one computer running iTunes can sync with up to three iPhones or iPads, is this correct? We'll have two iPhones and one iPad to start, we're thinking about building a master library of music, videos, and apps on the main home computer and syncing to all three devices - is that the best way to handle it? Are the Apps licensed to run on multiple devices, or do you have to buy a license for each device?
    Thanks.
    Pat

I'm a bit new to this also, but now have an iPod Touch and an iPad, and am syncing them both to one iTunes computer. Seems to be working fine. iTunes recognizes which device is currently connected and maintains separate sync configurations for each.
I have the iPod Touch set up to automatically sync all music, videos, podcasts, etc, when connected. (All but the ones unchecked in the library listing, this is only 10 or so high res videos that I want to sync only to the iPad.) So the iPod Touch is essentially set to sync everything but a few exceptions.
Then the iPad I have configured to only sync selected files. Those are the high res movies I want only on the iPad, a few of the apps, some music videos, etc. So the iPad is set up kind of opposite to how the iPod is set. That is, instead of syncing almost everything, sync only those items explictedly selected.
So when I add a new for example high res movie to the iTunes library, I unchecked it in the library listing which prevents it from being synced to the iPod, and I checked it on the movie tab of the iPad device so that it IS synced to the iPad.
    Works fine.
At this point most of my apps sync to the iPod Touch. I have a few like the Kindle app, USA Today, etc that are also synced to the iPad also. Those were free so I guess no problem with licensing.
I did briefly try additionally syncing a 99-cent game to both the iPod and the iPad and that worked fine. Not sure if this will hold for all paid-for apps or not.
Anyway, good luck with your new setup.

  • Whats the best way to connect multiple iphones, ipads, ipods with multiple accounts to one mac

I have iPhone 5s, ipad 4th gen ipod classic and mac mini on one itunes account with iphone 4s with ipad 1st gen on another account (wife's account) and also want to be able to add to this in the future. I want to connect through the mac mini and be able to use music movies calanders reminders etc through all our i's, whats the simplest and best way to go about this, before i start down the wrong road.

Ok, here is the link to the original thread.  The key, for him, was that all of the pads used the same apple id, and needed to be set up identically.
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/15456170#15456170
The other trick they use for distributing materials for whatever class was using the pads, was to create an e mail account that they all had acees to.  The documents, pdf, or whatever, would be e mailed to the account.  Each kid accesses and downloads the email.  Does whatever they are supposed to do, and e mails the done result back to the mailbox.     Easy for the teacher and the kids.

  • Sync multiple iPhones and iPod Touch's to one PC

I am going to have one iPhone 4 32GB and two iPod Touch 8GB's with one PC. I read up on how to sync different playlists to each device. However, I am unclear on how to sync different Apps to each device. The iPods I will have are much smaller capacities, so I know I won't be able to have all of my apps + music on them. How to you limit which Apps go to a Sync'd device?

Basically the same way you sync different playlists, by checkmarking what you want to go onto the device, but you do it through the Apps tab.

  • Re-registering iPod for different user

Recently bought a new video iPod and wanted to give my older one to another family member using iTunes. When the iPod was synched with the new user's library iTunes effectively deleted all my old library and synched only the titles of the new users' playlists. Acted like it was updating all 300+ songs, but none appeared on the iPod.
Is this a registration problem? Any suggestions for settings or whatever that will cause it to update properlyl?
    Thanks.

" When the iPod was synched with the new user's library iTunes effectively deleted all my old library and synched only the titles of the new users' playlists"
This is what should happen. There is no need to re register it.
" Acted like it was updating all 300+ songs, but none appeared on the iPod"
    Might this be the reason?

  • IWork files do not sync with iPhone/iPad using iTunes

When trying to sync Pages, Numbers or Keynote documents by adding the files to the respective app category in iTunes >Apps >Apps  >Documents and pressing Add..., I see the word "sync" on iPhone/iPad just for about a second and then the homescreen on iPhone/iPad reappears. But the files are not there (in Pages, Numbers or Keynote). Other apps I use work fine with this transfer method. What is the problem here?

Thanks for the suggestion, but I tried that to no avail.
I tried to toggle on and off every setting you can imagine and restarting. Deleting the apps and reinstalling.
    Nothing.

  • Does the Wish List for iPhone/iPad/iPod show price drops?

Does the Wish List for iPhone/iPad/iPod show price drops? I assume it would show the new price in the Wish List but does it inform you if the price drops?

The apps which show on the file sharing section on your iPad when connected to your computer's iTunes, you have exactly the same apps installed on your iPhone - they are not separate iPad and iPhone apps that you have installed on your iPad/iPhone, and only the iPad version supports file sharing ?
For iBooks, that won't show, it doesn't support file sharing. You can add ibooks / epubs / PDFs to your computer's iTunes library (the iBooks app if you are using a Mac with OS X Mavericks on it) via File > Add To Library, and you sync them to a device via its Books tab :
If you want to copy them off the device to your computer's iTunes (to the iBooks app on Mavericks) then File > Devices > Transfer Purchases will copy them over (that will copy PDFs and epubs from the iBooks app on your device, not just ibooks).

Trying to make my old 3G iphone an iPod for my 4 year old. I have found lots of ways to do so online. PROBLEM: It's been off for 2 years. When I charged it and turned it on it only flashes many different languages. Will only allow me to call emergency number. Any ideas how I can log on to it?

Im pretty sure what you are looking at is Set up Assistant where it shows different languages on the slider. If I am right then just slide to unlock and follow the prompts to choose your language, country etc.

  • Does messaging to/from iPhone to/from iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch count as a text charge for Verizon?

My dad has an iPad 2 and my little brother has an iPod Touch (4th generation). As long as there is a Wi-Fi signal, they are able to message, Facetime, and use the internet all for "free" (no extra charges from our internet service provider, which is obvious).
My dad recently purchased an iPhone 4S from Verizon.
He is currently on the "Pay As You Go" plan for messages ($0.20/text and $0.25/picture and video).
When are messages free, and when are they not free? Are they free as long as there is a Wi-Fi signal? Are they free as long as it is from the iPhone to another iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch? Do I get charged for data only when I see the "3G" symbol displayed in the upper left corner of the iPhone?
    Thanks in advance!

I then turned Wi-Fi off on the iPhone 4S but had "Send as SMS" turned on, tried sending another message to the Touch (Wi-Fi activated), and it did not send at all (because the Touch is SMS-incapable).
That sort of makes sense, but even with wi-fi off the 4S should have been able to send the iMessage over 3G to the Touch, which was on wi-fi.  Your results would only make sense if the 4S didn't have 3G service, or if the iMessage servers were down, or if you've turned iMessage off completely on the 4S.  That would force the message to go out as SMS but the Touch can't receive SMS.
Sorry, I was a bit unclear there.
I had both Wi-Fi and Cellular Data (3G) turned off to see if "Send as SMS" alone would work if I was sending a message to an SMS-incapable device (to see if the iPhone would try anyway and to see if I would get charged for that).
I'll type out some scenarios, and tell me if I'm wrong on these. They might seem redundant since you have pretty much answered all my questions, but I want to make absolutely sure that I understand. These could also clear things up for others who will/have read this discussion.
Scenarios involving iPhone 4S to iPod Touch (both running iOS 5):
4S has Wi-Fi, 3G, and "Send as SMS" turned on. Touch has Wi-Fi turned on.
4S can iMessage to Touch via Wi-Fi (as long as there is a Wi-Fi signal) free of charge and will remain free of charge and with no accrued data usage because 4S prioritizes Wi-Fi before 3G before SMS.
Once out of range of the Wi-Fi signal, 3G kicks in and any iMessages sent from 4S to Touch will count towards data plan usage (in my dad's case, 300MB/$20 per month - the minimum plan). However, data size will be insignificantly small if it's a simple words-only message and will only be a fraction of a percentage of the 300 MB.
My dad turns off Cellular Data (3G), Wi-Fi is still out of range, and he sends a message (keep in mind that "Send as SMS" is still turned on). Because the Touch is not capable of sending/receiving SMS messages, the message will just fail to send.
These scenarios would also have the same outcome if the Touch had been a Wi-Fi-only iPad. If the iPad had 3G capability, the message received from the 4S would have added towards the data plan usage of the iPad.
Scenarios involving iPhone 4S to another iPhone (both running iOS 5):
Both phones have Wi-Fi, 3G, and "Send as SMS" turned on. Messaging plan for each phone is "Pay as You Go" - $0.20/text and $0.25/picture or video.
iMessages are free and do not count towards data plan usage if both currently have strong Wi-Fi signals.
4S still has strong Wi-Fi signal, other iPhone gets out of Wi-Fi range and switches to 3G. Any messages received by the other iPhone from the 4S will count towards data plan usage of the other iPhone. However, the outgoing message from the 4S will still be free and will not count towards data plan usage.
Other iPhone turns off 3G and is still out of Wi-Fi range but still has "Send as SMS" turned on. 4S (with strong Wi-Fi signal) sends message, "I love you." to other iPhone. The message will still be free and will not count towards data plan usage for 4S but will charge $0.20 to other iPhone.
Scenario involving iPhone 4S to Samsung Galaxy 2 (running Android OS):
4S has Wi-Fi, 3G, and "Send as SMS" turned on.
Any message sent from 4S to Galaxy will count as SMS because Galaxy is incapable of iMessage. Therefore, Wi-Fi and 3G are insignificant, and 4S is charged $0.20.
4S has Wi-Fi, 3G, and "Send as SMS" turned off.
4S will not be capable of sending anything.
4S has Wi-Fi and 3G turned on, but "Send as SMS" is turned off.
4S has strong Wi-Fi signal, but message will not be sent to Galaxy.
4S gets out of Wi-Fi range and 3G kicks in, but message will not be sent to Galaxy and no data usage will have occurred.
That should be everything...at least everything I've considered.
    Again, thank you.

  • Multiple devices (iPads & iPods) on one Apple ID - questions

OK, here are my questions.  Any help/advice would be appreciated as I'm only a recent Apple convert (after 30 years of refusing to buy Apple!):
    a)  Can I manage my entire family's devices (4; 2 iPads + 2 iPod Touch's) with a single Apple ID (which also happens to be my email address)?
    b)  If I do this, do I just need to pay for any app once, and the whole family can use it on their respective devices simultaneously?  (I come from the Microsoft/PC world where it's always 1 user at a time per license - such as MSOffice)
    c)  Can we play multiplayer games via wi-fi, bluetooth, or gamecenter/OpenFeint, etc. using our 'single purchased' app on each device?  I'm talking about games like Dungeons 2 HD, Words with Friends, etc.  Note that each device may have a different version (HD, universal, iPhone/iPod only, iPad only, etc.).
    d)  What about more expensive business type apps like Documents to Go or even the IOS version of MS Office 2010?  Can these be shared and used by all devices with just one purchase?
    e)  What happens to apps like Messaging, FaceTime, or iCloud?  If the 4 devices are all signed on under 1 Apple ID, can we each communicate separately...and simultaneously?  If someone messages my daughter, I don't want to get the message on my iPad, etc.  How do we retain our Messaging-specific identity?  FaceTime?  iCloud space?
    f)  If I re-register one of the devices (my wife's) that's currently on her own Apple ID over to my Apple ID, what happens to her previously purchased apps (under her current Apple ID)?
    g)  Are in-app purchases also "shared" by every device linked to a single Apple ID?
    h) When I synch each device to iTunes after they're linked to a single Apple ID, will the synch try to install every app that we 'collectively' purchase...instead of just the ones we each want on our device?  Will the synch also attempt to download every song and video which may be on the iTunes account?
LOTS of questions, but I'm still a newbie to the wonderful Apple ecosystem.  Although I was totally skeptical at first, if in fact multiple users within a household can use an app purchased just once, this is a HUGE plus over the whole PC/Microsoft and even Android ecosystem!!  But before I flip the switch and move the other devices over to a single Apple ID (mine), I'd like to hear from some of you who have some definitive answers.  Any DISadvantages to running all 4 devices from a single Apple ID?  I'm also a bit confused as to the linkage between an Apple ID and an email address, as well as the hierarchy/relationship between an Apple ID and an iTunes account.
    Thanks in advance!

    Answers that I know :
a, yes - I have an iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch linked to my account on the same computer/iTunes and haven't had any problems with it
b, you only need to purchase the app once, it can then be copied onto all your devices. Some of my apps are on all three of my devices. If you get newspapers or magazines then I believe that some only allow one download of each magazine/newspaper, so you may not be able to have them on each device.
c, as long as you have your own Game Center accounts then you should be able to - I've never used it
d, yes, you can have them on all your devices, you don't need to multi-purchase them
e, I think that you will each need your own email address for them - in Settings > iMessage you can link an email address with messaging, and similarly for FaceTime (Settings > FaceTime) - that way messages/calls will only go to the correct person. Using FaceTime ; there is also some info on the built-in apps in iPad's manual and iPod's manual
f, all content purchased via an iTunes account is tied to that account, and they cannot be copied or transferred to a different account. So any content purchased on your wife's account will remain tied to her account. You can have more than one iTunes account authorised on a computer's iTunes (Store > Authorise This Computer), so you can have her content as well as yours on the computer that you sync to.
    g, don't know, I've not made any in-app purchase
h, with the device connected to and selected on the left-hand side of your computer's iTunes, then on the tabs on the right-hand side you can control what is synced to that device. Those selections should then be remembered each time you re-connect that device, so you can have different selections for each device and you shouldn't have to re-do the selection each time you connect it.
