Syntax problem in insertion sort

What I'm trying to do is use different types of algorithims, to sort the text file.
I'm using bubble, selection, and insertion sorts, which are being implemented with an arraylist. The bubble, and selection, comes out fine, but having problems getting the syntax right for the insertion sort.
The error comes in the inner for loop when I try to compare tmp and data.get(j-1) I get this error "The operator && is undefined for the argument type(s) boolean, int. Obviously I screwed this part of the coding, and I need help trying to figure out how to correct it. Thanks for any help.
public static void insertionSort (List data)
             Comparable tmp;
          int i, j;
             for(i = 1; i < data.size(); i++)
                  tmp =  (Comparable)data.get(i);
                   for(j = i; j > 0 && tmp.compareTo(data.get(j - 1)) ; j--) // <--- right here
                        data.set(j, data.get(j - 1))  ;
                   data.set(j, tmp)  ;
}

You need to check whether the compareTo returns less
than zero or greater than zero (depending on your
sort order).
(j > 0) && (tmp.compareTo(data.get(j - 1)) >
0)I added parentheses around the two boolean
expressions. Probably not necessary, but makes it
easier to read--and you don't have to remember the
operator precedence rules.
You might want < 0 at the end--as I said, depends on
your sort order.That fixed it thanks alot, oh and it was in decending order, so I just had to switch the ending part around.

  • Problems with INSERT  syntax ?

    Dear programmers,
    I am have a problem with INSERT Syntax,
    I have a table with 11 fields out of which one is auto_increment field(id), Now my problem is, Do i need to specifiy autoincrement field in INSERT statement. I dont thinks ?
    My Insert statement is as follows ,
    int result = st.executeUpdate("insert into tablename"
              +"(name, user_group, lage, preis, anmerkung, exp_uri, timestamp, nummer)"
              +"values +Objekt+"','"+Kategoriekey+"','"+Lage+"','"+Preis+"','"+Anmerkung+"','"+Dateiname+"','"+date.getTime()+"','"+ObjektID+"')");
    thanks in advance
    bye

    The answer to your question is maybe. Each database handles autoincrements differently. What database are you using?
    I also noticed that you are doing an insert using the standard Statement. You should look into using PreparedStatements for performance reasons and issues such as single quotes from within a string.

  • Syntax error in insert query

    I have a flash form that is used to inserts a record into an
    Access database table. In the for there are 4 datefields, several
    text input fields, and several select fields. When I submit the
    form, I get a syntax error that reads:

    The error occurred on line 184. Complex object types cannot

    Line 184 is the last line of the Values in the insert query.
    The query looks like this:

    Any recomendations?

    Date/Time in Access provide some pretty strage hurdles. In
    many occassions I have simply changed the field to a Text field and
    ran with that and never seemed to have problems with the result. I
    didn't like doing it but I never received errors. I have been
    receiving some parameter errors with <cfqueryparam> like the
    database doesn't recognized the preceding declared field in the
    update or insert query. Here is an example of a wierd error with
    Access. I have 2 tables. One is for estimate numbers and the other
    is for sub estimate numbers that can be assigned to specific
    estimate numbers. If is actually a complicated explanation about
    what is taking place behind the doors on this. The concept is
    simple on the surface. Both tables have the same fields except the
    subestimate table has 1 extra for a user defined subestimate
    number. The only relation between the two will be the estimate
    number. This insert works fine.
    INSERT INTO EstimateNumber(

    IF I get rid of the cfqueryparam fields it works. If I simply
    remove the param, I get a Syntax error. Needless to say I commented
    this query for the sake of sanity for the time being.

    Perhaps it is a reserved word issue with the date column,
    since
    date is an ODBC Reserved Keyword. You might try enclosing it
    within brackets [ ].
    <cfquery name="update1" datasource="trevor_SecurityDB">
    INSERT INTO imagesproducts
    (title, info, [date])
    VALUES ( '#form.title#', '#form.info#', '#DateFormat(Now())#'
    </cfquery>
    Or, if that doesn't help, you might try using a cfqueryparam
    tag for the '#DateFormat(Now())#' value using a cfsqltype =
    "CF_SQL_TIMESTAMP" (assuming a date/time datatype on the column).
    Also, you might look into using one of the CreateODBCDateTime() or
    CreateODBCDate() functions.

  • Dreamweaver silently detects syntax problem

    I have a .cfm file which I've been maintaining for a few years. Recently while editing the file in DW6, DW began to fail to recognize that the file is a Cold Fusion file.  Common keyboard shortcuts, both general and CF-specific just won't function.  Menu items under "Insert...ColdFusion Objects" are all disabled.
    After 90 minutes of progressively removing a few lines of code, saving and closing, then reopening the file, I tracked the problem down to the presence of 1 line of ColdFusion code.
    I happened to see at the bottom of the edit window (in the part of the status bar which shows CF code nesting) that <cfinvoke> was listed, where there was none in the file I was having trouble with.  It turns out the line of "bad" code was a <cfinclude>, and the file it referenced had a <cfinvoke> without a closing </cfinvoke>
    The reason for this long post under Dreamweaver, is that DW was clearly detecting a syntax problem, but instead of identifying the problem, it just stopped functioning normally, and acted in a truely weird way.
    I do NOT have "Enable Related Files" active.  For DW to wanter out into other files and gag on a syntax error, then not to report the problem, was totally unexpected.
    I consider the primary "bug" to be in failing to report the syntax error.  Secondarily, syntax checking in related files should probably be controlled by the "related files" preference option.
    This is DW CS6, v 12.1, build 5949.

    Did you report this to Adobe?

  • Problem in inserting data into MySQL table

    Hi All,
    I have a table with just two fields FIRSTNAME and SECONDNAME in MySQL. I am accepting the First Name and Second Name in two text fields and then trying to insert them into the MySQL table. I have set the concurrency of the rowset to CONCUR_UPDATABLE and am using the code clip for Database row insert with the appropriate changes. When I run the application it doesnt give me any errors but the data is also not inserted in the table. Can someone pls help me out.
    Loneliness wins the race :-)

    This is my problem when inserting single row. What does it means ?
    MusicInsert: com.mysql.jdbc.NotUpdatable: Result Set not updatable.This result set must come from a statement that was created with a result set type of ResultSet.CONCUR_UPDATABLE, the query must select only one table, and must select all primary keys from that table.     FilesPK pk = new FilesPK();
    pk.setUid(uid);

    file.setFilesPK(pk);
    FoldersPK folderPk = new FoldersPK(folderID, uid);

    It is not even considering folderId while inserting into db.
    However it works fine when I add folderId variable in Files entity and changed insertFile like this:
    public void insertFile(String fileName, int folderID, int uid){
    FilesPK pk = new FilesPK();
    pk.setUid(uid);
    Files file = new Files();
    file.setFilename(fileName);
    file.setFilesPK(pk);
    file.setFolderId(folderId) // added line
    FoldersPK folderPk = new FoldersPK(folderID, uid);
    file.setFolders(em.find(Folders.class, folderPk));
    em.persist(file);
    My question is that is this behavior expected or it is a bug.
    Is it required to add "column_name" variable separately even when an entity has reference to ManyToOne mapping foreign Entity ?
    I used Mysql 5.1 for database, then generate entities using toplink, JPA 1.0, glassfish v2.1.
    I've also tested this using eclipselink and got same error.
    Please provide some pointers.
    Thanks

    Hello,
    What version of EclipseLink did you try? This looks like bug https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=280436 that was fixed in EclipseLink 2.0, so please try a later version.
    You can also try working around the problem by making both fields writable through the reference mapping.

    Hi Murthy
    With a first glance, I think you have given a wrong parameter value to "validityend". It should be '99991231' not '31129999' .
    If your problem still persists, try inserting the data online from PA30. If your input causes no errors, then please state what the return parameter contains.

  • A problem with inserting into DB hebrew strings

    Hi,
    I am working with a 8.1.7 DB version, and use thin driver.
    I have my DB Charest configured to iso 8859P8 (which is visual Hebrew)
    I have no problem in making a connection and retrieving strings, using SELECT * FROM ..
    and then use the ResultSet.getString(String columnName) method .
    I also have no problem in inserting the Hebrew characters , and retrieving them back ( I represent them in a servlet ),
    The only problem I do have, is when I try to insert into DB a row in the following manner
    INSERT into table_name values( Hebrew_String_value1, Hebrew_String_value2, Hebrew_String_value3, Hebrew_String_value4)
    the insertion works fine , but somehow the insertion misplaces the strings order and actually the insertion is in opposite order :
    Hebrew_String_value4, Hebrew_String_value3, Hebrew_String_value2, Hebrew_String_value1.
    If I use the same insert with English Strings , there is no problem.
    does any one have the solution how I insert the strings in the right order ?
    one solution I have is to insert only one column and then update the table for each column , but then , instead of one execute() action , I have to make ,
    1 execute() + 9 executeUpdate() for a 10 column table

    Can you try specify the column order in your INSERT statement, i.e.
    INSERT INTO mytable( column1_name,
                         column2_name,
                         column3_name,
                         column4_name )
                 VALUES( column1_string,
                         column2_string,
                         column3_string,
                         column4_string)My wild guess, though I can't understand why at the moment, is that there may be a problem because Hebrew is read from right to left, that may be causing a problem.

    Hi,
    Print the whole stack trace. It will tell you the line which causes the error. How you use clob and blob in oracle is also version dependent. Try to google for
    oracle "your version" java clob example.

  • Problem in inserting a node in Treeview.

    Hi all,
    I'm having a problem in inserting a node in the
    treeview always it appends in the end of the
    sibling.
    Basically on double clicking of any node in the
    treeview should create a copy of the double clicked
    node and just insert the copy of the doubleclicked
    node next to the doubleclicked node instead at the end of the sibling.
    if i do this it will to the end of all the siblings.
    copyObject = l_SelectedNode.Clone();
    copyObject.Parent = l_SelectedNode.Parent;
    instead of next to it.
    I am trying something like this:
    RootNode
    |
    ---CHILD Sibling Node1
    | |
    ----GrandChild1Sibling1
    | |
    ---GrandChild1Sibling2 <<-- double clicking
    (GrandChild1Sibling2)
    | |
    <<-- it must add
    (GrandChild1Sibling2_copy)
    ---GrandChild1Sibling3
    | |
    ---GrandChild1Sibling4
    | << -- But it is adding a copy here
    at the end of all sibbling..
    |
    ---CHILD Sibling Node2
    | |
    -------GrandChild2Sibling1
    | |
    ------GrandChild2Sibling2
    | |
    ------GrandChild2Sibling3
    | |
    ------GrandChild2Sibling4
    |
    i am doing GrandChild1Sibling2_copy.parent =
    GrandChild1Sibling2.Parent;
    it will always add in the end of all the sibling as
    (GrandChild1Sibling5_copy) instead of next to
    (GrandChild1Sibling3_copy) Just below the GrandChild1Sibling2.
    Is there any simple soln or any ordering factor which i should look for.
    Thanx in advance...
    Regards,
    -Prasad

  • Problem with alphabetised sorting

    So your sorting system only recognises the first digit and this causes problems, for example sorting files starting with 1 to 12. Instead of getting a list of 1,2,3....12 you get 1,10,11,12,3,4,5....9.
    Frustrating to say the least.

    I think the issue is in the iOS system for sorting which Reader uses. Rename your files 01, 02, 03...

  • Some syntax problems (I guess)

    Hi, I'm having problem with the first constructor in this simplified example code... I want to create a "default" Comparator. I'm not quite sure how to do this.
    public class MyClass<E> {
        private Comparator<E> comp;
        public MyClass() {
            MyClass(new ComparableComparatorBridge());
        public Myclass(Comparator<E> comp) {
            this.comp = comp;
        private class ComparableComparatorBridge<E extends Comparable> implements Comparator<E> {
            public int compare(E o1, E o2) {
                return ((Comparable)o1).compareTo(o2);
    }

    Event if you fix the syntax problems, following the advice of the other posters, you'll have a semantic problem:
    MyClass<E> is parameterized with an unbounded type parameter.
    You cannot assume that E implements Comparable<E>.
    What you'd really need is a parameterizd constructor like this (won't compile):public <C extends E & Comparable<E>> MyClass() {
    this(new ComparableComparatorBridge<C>());
    }Unfortunately, this isn't valid Java. I see two possibilities:
    1. Derive from MyClass and introduce the additional bound on the type parameter of the subclass. Then you can create a default-constructor using the ComparableComparatorBridge in that subclass.
    2. Add a static factory function to MyClass, like this:
    public class MyClass<E> {
        private final Comparator<E> comp;
        public MyClass(Comparator<E> comp) {
            this.comp = comp;
        public static <E extends Comparable<E>> MyClass<E> defaultComparable() {
            return new MyClass<E>(new ComparableComparatorBridge<E>());
        private static class ComparableComparatorBridge<E extends Comparable<E>> implements Comparator<E> {
            public int compare(E o1, E o2) {
                return o1.compareTo(o2);
    }

    > I get this when i try to insert information in the
    database:
    I suspect some of your column names are reserved keywords,
    such as FROM, TIME, etcetera.
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/286335
    Whenever possible, avoid using keywords as object names. The
    better solution here is to permanently rename the columns that are
    keywords. Assuming the rest of your query syntax is correct, that
    should fix the syntax error. If for some reason you cannot rename
    the columns, you must escape them by using square brackets around
    the column names:
    INSERT INTO Message ( mem_id, [From], [Time], .... )
    As an aside, you should properly scope your variables.
    Example use #FORM.mem_id# instead of just #mem_id#. Your should
    also consider using cfqueryparam for all query values. These last
    two things are not the cause of your error, but they are good
    coding practices.

  • Problem in Insertion into table through After Report Parameter form trigger

    Hi All,
    I am getting problem in inserting some data into temp table through Report.
    My requirement is like that, I have to do a calculation based on user parameters, and then insert the data into the temp table. I wanted to do this into After Report Parameter form trigger function. I have done all the calculation and wrote all the insert statement in that function. There is no problem in compilation. then I am taking value from this temp table in my formula columns.
    When I run this report, it hangs, don't understand what is the problem.Can anybody help me out in this.
