System crash/reboot

I just started having this problem a couple of weeks ago. When browsing in Safari or when doing some minor audio editing in Protools or when poking around in Google Earth, all of a sudden my Mac will just shut down and reboot. Kind of annoying, especially when doing a recording session. I've done all the normal disk diagnostics with no improvement. Any ideas?

Hey, its been awhile since I originally posted. Thought I had the problem solved but it has reared its ugly head again. I THOUGHT it was caused by either the Mac hardware or the firewire audio interface I have plugged in because the system crash seems to happen mostly when I'm running Protools (to run Protools, I have an audio interface plugged into a firewire/express card and I have an external firewire hard drive plugged into the standard firewire port). BUT, I tried daisy-chaining the externals into the firewire port and that didn't help. Then I tried daisy-chaining the externals to the express card. No luck. I took the Mac into an authorized repair place and they say the hardware passed all tests. SOOO, I've looked at the Console log and I see lots of:
THEPROCESS_HAS_FORKED_AND_YOU_CANNOT_USE_THIS_COREFOUNDATION_FUNTIONALITY___YOU_MUS TEXEC--() to debug.
and
(0x10a390.Locum[219] Exited: Terminated
along with other things around the time of the shutdown.
I can include a larger portion of the log if anyone is interested.
Thanks for any help!

• System crashes and reboot. Montain Lion.  Problem Report

My computer keeps crashing for no aparent reason. One thing i have noticed is that it crashes when i use gestures. Gestures like the Mision control. Gestures that interact with the whole screen (changing desktops and stuff). I am not sure but it does that when im listening to music. Wierd i know but maybe it can help.
If anyone could help me with this it would be awesome. I can varely work now. I got used to gestures so whenever I use one it crashes, the whole screen goes black and the last sound keeps repeating itself for like 10 seconds until the computer reboots itself.
Thanx in advance for your time.
Here is the error report that gives me when the system is rebooted. Maybe it can help.

I desperately need your help. I was working on iMovie last night when the thing froze up on me. I've tried rebooting. I've tried reinstalling the apps. No change. I can play some of the files- although I can't tell which ones will play until they magically appear. I can't get into the project library or the event library. The bar that lets me scroll through the clips is gone. Even when I can get something to play the whole system crashes after a couple of minutes and generates a "problem report" that says "iMovie Quit Unexpectedly". This all started when I was adding cutaways- and one clip just would not load. After I tried several times everything froze up. Have you ever heard of something like this? Maybe I pushed a button or somehow changed a setting? Maybe some of the video is corrupt? What do you recommend?
Thanks for any advice you can offer!

I have tried all the above and nothing seems to work. Any other suggestions?

• Kernel-Power Event ID 41: The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly.

Hello,  Currently we are seeing this issue with a couple of our Lenovo T420s laptops with a Solid State Drive.  ruffly about 10 or so.  The Reboots happen randomly and do not create a dump file.  We have contacted Lenovo and they are
not sure why its happening.  Since this Crash I set it for Minidump this did not work my next steps will be to Disable Automatic restart on System Failure to see if it brings anything up.  I am also looking at using Procmon to dump to a file as well.
If anyone has any other ideas please let me know.

Thank you.

We have tested and checked both the Bios and firmware of the SSD Drive's
Bios was up to date and no issue
Firmware was also up to date as well.
Users are still experiencing random Reboots.   I tried to capture the issue with Procmon but since the PC shutdown (Goes to a black screen no power at all even when turning the "Automatically
restart" off under Startup and Recovery) No dmp files as of yet.  Unable to configure Procdump due to not knowing where the issue is and what is causing it to happen.
Going to replace one of the PC's with a New one with different hardware to see if this resolve the issue.  If anyone has any idea's to be able to capture what maybe happening that would
be great.
Thank you.

• System crash and reboot since Mavericks install

Hi all
I have recently upgraded my OS to Mavericks, on my early-2008 Macbook Pro, and have experienced system crashes and reboots since then.
The crashes occur when using either of my web browsers, Safari and Chrome, and definitely seems to occur more frequently when using YouTube.  I haven't experienced a crash in any other applications.  I have tried updating Flash, then deleting and re-installing Flash when the upgrade was unsuccessful; not sure if this was relevant or related but I thought I'd give it a try anyway.

• Firefox crashes system and reboots when opening a bookmark. Error message flashes too rapidly to read.

Running W2k Pro SP4, FF 12.0.
When trying to open a particular bookmarked web site, the system crashes. Same thing if try to open same web site. First a blue screen displays an error message for about one second which is too rapid to read, then system shuts down and reboots in normal mode.
This started on 10/10/2013. Previously had no problem with the bookmark or site.
Checked for a Crash Report in Troubleshooting Information Section but none appear.
Is there another file that has this information?
Is there a way to pause the screen display to be able to read the message? Clicking "P" button for pause has no effect.
Have no problem with IE6.

Hello,
Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.
(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)
* On Windows you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
* On Mac you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the option key while starting Firefox.
* On Linux you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by quitting Firefox and then going to your Terminal and running: firefox -safe-mode (you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)
* Or open the Help menu and click on the Restart with Add-ons Disabled... menu item while Firefox is running.

Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"

If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the Troubleshooting extensions and themes article for that.
To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.
When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help other users who have the same problem.
Thank you.

• Satellite M15 S405 System Crash during defraging - cannot reboot

I have a Toshiba Satellite M15 S-405 laptop running Windows XP. In the midst of defraging my hard drive, my system crashed. I tried various means of rebooting, but I keep getting the following message
'"Windows cannot start because the file is missing or corrupted
Windows\system32\config\system
You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the original Setup CD-ROM, Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair""
The Recovery and Applications CD that came with my laptop will only allow me the option of re-installing Windows while wiping my hard drive of all my files. Needless to say, I do not want to do this. I have tried booting into Safe Mode, but I am unable to get the system to boot at all. It starts to boot and shows me the "Windows XP" logo, but it does not go any further. Can you suggest a workaround for me to boot my system so that I can try to see where the problem is?
Thank you.

Colleen, I am suggesting that you first attempt to resurrect your Windows as it is now. The steps are in my previous posts.
If you wish to try..
1. Create a set of floppies which should enable you to access the Recovery Console. It doesn't say that in the articles, but you can access the Recovery Console from the Setup floppies just like from a Windows XP installation CD.
How to obtain Windows XP Setup disks for a floppy boot installation
Description of the Windows XP Recovery Console for advanced users
2. Once in the Recovery Console, follow Microsoft's instructions here.
How to recover from a corrupted registry that prevents Windows XP from starting
If the first floppy won't boot, then we can download a bootable CD that can access the Windows files and follow Microsoft's instructions for replacing the registry hives.
That may sound too technically challenging to you. In that case, we can give up on this installation of Windows altogether and talk about how to rescue your important files.

Conclusion
11 crash dumps
have been found and analyzed. Only 10 are included in this report. No offending
third party drivers have been found. Consider using WhoCrashed Professional
which offers more detailed analysis using symbol resolution. Also configuring
your system to produce a full memory dump may help you.

more information.
Note that it's not always possible to state with
certainty whether a reported driver is actually responsible for crashing your
system or that the root cause is in another module. Nonetheless it's suggested
you look for updates for the products that these drivers belong to and regularly
visit Windows update or enable automatic updates for Windows. In case a piece of
malfunctioning hardware is causing trouble, a search with Google on the bug
check errors together with the model name and brand of your computer may help
you investigate this further.

We do need the actual DMP file as it contains the only record of the sequence of events leading up to the crash, what drivers were loaded, and what was responsible.
We prefer at least 2 DMP files to spot trends and confirm the cause.

• How should I debug a PVM that is crashing & rebooting too fast ?

I have a newly created oel4u6 PVM that appears to be starting but then crashing & rebooting too fast and I don't know how to best debug it. The vm is a P2V'ed oel4u6 HP Blade that successfully boots as a HVM but I can't seem to get it to fully start as a PVM (I have several clones that I am working with to contrast/compare).
I can't seem to get the console to start fast enough to show me anything useful as the crash is within seconds.
I likely can flip the VM back to HVMPV mode or HVM and boot to the original kernel but if I boot to another kernel I am not sure what files in the VM (if any) may give any insight on the failed starts/crashed.*
Anyone have any ideas/recommendations on how to debug this?*
The message from xend.log is:

• [VIA] Via K7-266 Pro2 - System crashes if use more than 512 MB of memory

Cannot use more than 512 MB of memory or system crashes. After running without a problem for over 2 years with 1 GB of memory installed, system started intermittent crashing, generally after 5 to 30 minutes of use.  I worked with the system manufacturer's tech support and they determined that it must be a motherboard problem.  I am hoping to find another fix rather than replacing motherboard.  System details:
MB: Via K7-266 Pro2 (MS 6380)
OS: MS Windows XP Update 1
Bios: V3.6
I've used Norton Systemworks and Norton Anti-Virus to keep system clean, and SpyBot and Adaware to clean adware
During troubleshooting, we found that it will run with 512 MB of memory without problems, but not with the 1 GB I had installed.  My memory was 2 x 256 MB installed with the machine and 512 MB I purchased from Crucial and installed.  Computer ran over 2 years with all memory installed without a problem.  After the problem started and during troubleshooting, we found that any combination of 512 MB worked fine (either the 2 x 256 MB or the one 500MB chip), apparently in any arrangement of slots.  But as soon as I went to higher memory, I was subject intermittent crashes.
Could not ID the source of the crash.  It sometimes happened when I was working with a single program open (various programs from IE to Excel to playing at GameSpy), had multiple programs open in background, or even when computer was sitting idle with only the startup programs active.
During troubleshooting we also did a complete re-install of Windows XP, updated the bios to V3.6, and checked bios settings, but the problems persists.
What else could be the problem?

I am beginning to suspect a PSU problem.  I neglected to mention in my first post that when the system crashes, it does not freeze but has intermittent reboots.
I ran the memtest86+ test first on the two old sticks of memory then on just the one new 512 MB stick; both passed the test.  I also used the Prime95 stress test on both sets, and both ran without incident.
I used PC Alert to report CPU and case temperatures during the stress test.  The results maxed at 54 and 41 degrees respectively during the first stress test and 46 amd 39 degrees during the second test (I think part of the difference was due to a lower ambient, room temperature during the second test.)  The voltages reported during both tests were similar and were: Vcore1: 1.71v;  Vcore2: 1.26v; +5v: 4.76v; 3.3v: 3.31v; +12v: 11.60v; and -12v: 12.60v.  I am not sure if that information is meaningful, PCAlert showed all measurements as within the required range.
I periodically have cleaned the dust out of my computer, so I don't think that is the problem.
I used 2 power calculators with major differences in the reported status of the system. The test from pcpowercooling reported minimum and maximum requirements for my system (with the full 1 GB of memory installed) of 300w and 510w.  The alternate I found at jscustompcs (from a recent article about power supplies at Extreme Tech) reported a minimuum of 256w (no maximum is calculated with their tool.  The two tools had significant differences for memory, CPU, and PCI cards.  Off particular relevance to my problem was the difference in memory requirements; Pcpowercooling calculated memory requirements at 8w per 128MGB while jcustompcs used 12.5 per stick, resulting in different totals of 64w vs. 21w.  Which is right?
One item that makes me think it is not the PSU, however, is that the problem would occur with the 1 GB of memory while the system was idle, thus I was not using any of the hardware devices.  However, I never experienced the problem while using a device (e.g. DVD, CDRW, or tape drive) - either with 500MB or 1GB of memory.
My power unit is a Power Man #FSP 300-60BTV with 300w output, including +3.3v: 28amps; +5v: 30.0 amps; +12v: 15 amps; +5vsb: 20amps; -5v: 0.3amps; -12v: 0.8amps.  It also notes max output of +3.3v and +5v of 200amps.
My system also includes a Leadtek nVidia Geforce 3 Ti400 graphics card, DVD, CDRW, HP 14 GB tape drive, 1 case fan, and 4 PCI cards (modem, network, USB2.0, and Audigy 1).  The USB card is connected only to a bus in my Dell monitor and I have not used other USB devices.
Any thoughts or suggestions?  Do I need to replace the PSU?

• Yosemite System Crashes on Boot with Dell U2713HM

Previously under Mavericks I had no issue with a Dell U2713HM monitor and my 'non-stock' NVidia card.  (The reason I'm using the video card I am is because the stock ATI card (ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT) is known do fry itself which I discovered after replacing it with an identical card and having the 2nd one fry itself after a year.  I did a lot of research and settle don the card I now have because others had reported success with it.  It worked fine for nearly a year until updating to Yosemite.)
After upgrading to Yosemite my system went into an infinite reboot loop on startup.  On a hunch, I swapped out my U2713HM for an old 17" monitor and was able to boot.  I can't even have the U2713HM plugged in/turned off using the second port on the card without the system crashing.  If I get the system booted using the 17", I can then plug in/turn on the U2713HM and set the resolution - at that point I can (sometimes) boot but it will then crash on shutdown triggering an automatic restart.
Is anyone having any success with a U2713HM, and especially with an NVidia card?  The only option I haven't tried is a completely fresh, clean install.  Once the system boots, I get the dialog that it was restarted because of an issue and can view part of the dump info that will be sent to Apple -> that clearly indicates the issue is with the kernel/NVidia driver somewhere.
System specs:  Mac Pro (Early 2008) with an NVidia GeForce GTX 650 1024MB card installed running Yosemite (OS X 10.10)

My mac mini (late 2012, Yosemite installed) doesn't start with Dell U2713HM if the USB cable of the monitor is connected.
No problems if I connect the usb-cable after successful startup. Also the usb-hub of the Dell is working fine then.

• Finder/System Crashing OS10.9.4

Hi folks,
started yesterday out of the blue. finder windows were bilking on and off every minute or so, then, periodically, entire system crashed. Got that "something happened" message that usually indicates kernel issue.
I uninstalled Symantec, quit google drive (which was a "not responding" process according to Activity monitor), and rebooted from restore partition and repairs permissions (Run Macaroni, so this is usually up to date).
Now, the finder windows no longer blink on and off, but system still crashing every 10 mn or so.  Here's the Console report for latest kernel.
Advice, oh kind and knowledgable people?THX!

Thx Linc,
reinstalled the system software from the restore volume, then booted in safe mode. Computer crashed again. Seems to be doing it like clockwork every 9 min and 4-5 secs.
Also, I don't seem to be able to launch Messages. Tells me theres a problem and I must quit and restart it, which I can't do. Don't know if the two issues are related.
I don't use chrome. Google drive, set to launch on boot, seems to be hanging. Activity Monitor reports it "not responding"  same for iCloud Photos.
Now what?

• Stuttering video/audio and system crashes?

For the better part of this year, I've had a terrible time with video and audio stuttering on my MacBook (Sept. 2007; 2.16GHz, 4MB RAM). This was especially noticeable when watching streaming Netflix videos, and it didn't seem to matter if I was using Safari or Firefox. Clearing the browser cache has little to no impact.
The problem appears to have worsened since I upgraded to Snow Leopard about two months ago. (I'd previously been using OS 10.4.11; I now have 10.6.7). This same problem now impacting YouTube and QuickTime, even when I'm viewing files on my hard drive (approx. 27 GB free on a 120 GB drive), so I doubt that my internet connection is to blame. This happens whether I'm on WiFi or on an Ethernet connection -- also, my Ethernet randomly decides to stop working, but that's (probably) a separate issue.
(Also since my OS upgrade, I'm suddenly having battery issues as well.)
The problem is sometimes so bad that the entire system crashes, and I'm forced to do a cold/hard reboot of my MacBook. This has happened twice within the past 24 hours. Mostly, I can watch a few seconds or sometimes several minutes of video before the video and audio start sticking and stuttering again -- so pretty much any video capability is nearly worthless to me at this point.
Here's the Panic Report from my latest system crash this morning... I don't know how to read Panic Reports, so I'm hoping someone might spot something that I can fix to address this issue?

Definitely not. I've got a 2007 MacBook, and even with the extended warranty that coverage expired a year ago.
If you're concnered about cost, you could always call and ask. In my experience, the people at the Genius Bar (and Apple Store in general) are happy to provide assistance free of charge. If you have to replace a part, system, etc. you'll certainly need to cover that, but they should talk to you about costs and get your consent before doing any work on your machine.

• Leopard 10.5.8 or 10.5.4 System Crashes?

I need some help. I must have a corrupted file in my "User Library". How do I find it? I've tried to do a Restore and I get a message after 3 hours that says 'error cannot complete operation' or something like that. I have Time Capsule and managed to recover all my files by individually importing the proper folders, but when I tried to import my iTunes Library or my iPhoto Library (9GB- 4000 photos), it would 'Copy' the file very slowly and about half way through it would hang (the 'file count left to be copied' would stop changing and if I wait too long to try and 'Cancel Coping' the whole system crashes (I think the problem is with very, very large Folders) and I am forced to do a hard reboot with the power button. Then I am in real trouble, because it corrupts the System and I need to do a complete Restore and now it is full circle again.
I did some research with 'Apple Discussions' and discovered that the problem is most likely in my 'User Library'. I figure during 'Restore' the System sees some corrupt file(s) and refuses to copy it, and that file probably is the cause of the System Crashes. Is there anything out there that can scan my User Library for files that are corrupted or could cause problems?
I have plenty of memory (2GB). I've used 'System Profiler' and it shows that the memory is good. I've tried Restore 3 or 4 different ways with always the same result as above. I've discovered that with Time Machine, if I keep the Folder small enough (less than 4 or 5 GB) it will copy OK. But if the folder is above that limit then 'All H... Breaks Loose'.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What kind of restore? From the Time Machine interface (the "Star Wars" display)? Restoring your entire system by booting from your Leopard Install disc and using the +Restore from Backups+ option?
and I get a message after 3 hours that says 'error cannot complete operation' or something like that.
Sorry, but we're going to need the exact message.

Do you mean copying from your backups via the Finder?

I figure during 'Restore' the System sees some corrupt file(s) and refuses to copy it, and that file probably is the cause of the System Crashes. Is there anything out there that can scan my User Library for files that are corrupted or could cause problems?
If the problem is something corrupted, it's probably something in your backups, not your user folder (on your internal HD). Try repairing the sparse bundle:
Open the Disk Utility app (in your Applications/Utilities folder).
Mount the sparse bundle by opening the TM drive in finder and double-click on the sparse bundle.
Drag the sparse bundle into Disk Utility's sidebar and do a +*Repair Disk+* (not permissions) on it.
Also, any time you do a forced-power off, you can corrupt your internal HD. So use Disk Utility to do a +*Verify Disk+* (not permissions) on it. If that shows errors, you'll have to boot from your Leopard Install disk and use it's copy of DU to repair them. Post back if you need to do this but need help.
I have plenty of memory (2GB). I've used 'System Profiler' and it shows that the memory is good.
No. System Profiler doesn't test your computer's memory. It just shows what's installed.
Do the +*Repair Disk+* and report back with the results and answers to the questions.

• Sudden system crashes for Mac mini 2011

I just came home from a 2-week vacation and my computer has begun to crash and reboot, seemingly when I need the computer to do some task more intensive than Internet browsing.
It started when I tried uploading pictures into iPhoto via my camera's SD card--and it invariably happens whenever I try this--but it has also crashed and rebooted during simple multitasking procedures, like clicking to check my download progress in Safari as my iPhone is syncing in iTunes. Yesterday I had to contend with the white (grey?) screen of death for a few hours as I tried different methods. Fiddling around in Safe Mode let me fix that problem, at least, but the sudden system crashes still persist.
Could my computer have been affected by a lack of use over the last two weeks in the summer heat? It's been hot in the house, but not exceptionally so for August. And before I left I shut it down and unplugged the power cord.
Here are the first several dozen lines of the error report from the most recent crash. If anyone could offer me some help, I'd be very grateful.

Remove the "MacKeeper" crapware as follows, then reboot and test. If there's no improvement, post again.
Note: These instructions apply to the version of the product that I downloaded and tested in early 2012. I can't be sure that they apply to other versions, nor do I intend to repeat the test.
IMPORTANT: "MacKeeper" has what the developer calls an “encryption” feature. In my tests, I didn't try to verify what this feature really does. If you used it to “encrypt” any of your files, “decrypt” them before you uninstall, or (preferably) restore the files from backups made before they were “encrypted.” As the developer is not trustworthy, you should assume that the "decrypted" files are corrupt unless proven otherwise.
In the Finder, select Go ▹ Applications from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-A. The "MacKeeper" application is in the folder that opens. Quit it if it's running, then drag it to the Trash. A dialog will pop up asking why you want to uninstall it. You don't have to provide that information. Enter anything you like in the text box, then click the Uninstall button. All the functional components of the software will be deleted. That's the only useful feature of "MacKeeper:" it deletes itself. Reboot.
Do not try to uninstall by dragging the MacKeeper icon in the Dock or the LaunchPad to the Trash.
Here are some general suggestions. If you want your computer to be usable, don't install crapware, such as “themes,” "haxies," “add-ons,” “toolbars,” “enhancers," “optimizers,” “accelerators,” “extenders,” “cleaners,” “defragmenters,” “firewalls,” "barriers," “guardians,” “defenders,” “protectors,” most “plugins,” commercial "virus scanners,” "disk tools," or "utilities." With very few exceptions, this kind of material is useless, or worse than useless.
The more actively promoted the product, the more likely it is to be garbage. The most extreme example is the “MacKeeper” scam.
The only software you should install is that which directly enables you to do the things you use a computer for — such as creating, communicating, and playing — and does not modify the way other software works. Never install any third-party software unless you know how to uninstall it.
