System Events and Coreservicesd takes up all CPU at startup

Every time I boot up my laptop System Events and coreservicesd take up to 85% of my CPU. It takes about 10 minutes for it to finally go away and it makes my fans blare. If I'm in a public place I force quit system events which makes them both go away. What in the world causes this and how can I fix it?

I'm having this same problem. It is related to Growl, and perhaps a recent update of Growl to 1.1.3. I'm trying to figure out a way to fix this without uninstalling Growl, since I find this app very useful.

  • CORESERVICESD takes 90%-100% CPU about 5 minutes after every fresh start

So, coreservicesd process takes 90-100% cpu after a fresh start. It doesn't start immediately after login but about 3-5 minutes after, and it happens +every time+ i start my computer and it lasts about 10 minutes or so before it stops eating the cpu.
I haven't figured out any way to stop this behavior. I've reset smc, emptyed /Library/Caches, clean installed Snow Leopard (without restoring from Time Machine backup) but nothing seems to help.
Does anyone here know what to do in my situation or does anyone have any new ideas what should I try to do? I appreciate every response.

OK folks, problem solved. At least mine is. No coreservcesd eating cpu anymore! Hurray! This is the second time I boot and the computer seems to run perfectly. If the coreservicesd problem comes back I'll report here.
    So, what did I do:
    1. Changed from 64 bit kernel + extensions to 32 bit.
    2. Uninstalled SpiceRack and MozyHome Backup preference panes.
    3. Repaired Premissions
    4. Cleaned User Cache
    5. Cleaned System Cache
    6. Cleaned All Users Cache
    7. Rebuilt Launch Services
    8. Forced Empty Trash
    9. Removed Corrupt Preferences
    10. Updated Prebindings
    11. Reindexed Spotlight
    12. Cleaned Archived Logs
    13. Cleaned All Logs
    14. Flushed DNS Cache
    15. Removed .DS_Store Files
    16. Cleaned All Browser Caches
    17. Updated Whatis Database
    18. Updated Locate Database
    19. Cleaned Font Caches
    20. Booted from SL install dvd and ran Disk Utility's repaid disk & repair premissions.
After these operations my mac runs faster and all errors in the Console log are gone! All steps (except 1, 2 and 20) can be preformed with different maintenance apps. I used an app called MainMenu.

  • IPs system events and restart

    Hi,
I am looking at monitoring the IDS system events like adding users/sensor application restart, interface down with a SDEE client.Does system events like this get logged in detail to the event store to be picked up by the API ...or is there something i need to do with my CIPS ver 6 to get it across with verbose messages .
    Thanks and appreciate

Simply go into your IPS and create an "Event Action Filter." Simply modify the source address with that of your scanning system. You can leave the rest pretty much stock or, adjust the destination to the subnet of your DMZ. Also, you'll want to keep an eye on the areas to subtract. Making sure to take away the deny actions, and if necessary, reporting as well.

  • Storage cells: System Events and System Defined Thresholds

    Hi, there,
I have an Exadata V1 (yes, I do) and I recently saw this flag up as an alert on one of my storage cells:
    2 2013-02-19T17:15:50-05:00 critical "39:Temperature:Threshold based -- Upper Non-critical going high State: asserted"
    3 2013-02-19T17:15:50-05:00 critical "255:System Event:System Event -- PEF action : 7 State: asserted"
    4 2013-02-19T17:15:51-05:00 critical "39:Temperature:Threshold based -- Upper Non-critical going high State: deasserted"
Basically, for one second, it appears that the temperature threshold was exceeded. This doesn't surprise me as the V1 machine is: a) very tightly compressed into a small box, b) is old, c) is HP.
Because of a bug in our version of the ESS, we just use the system-defined thresholds on the storage cells. I have two questions:
    1) How can I find out the system-defined thresholds - or at least the thresholds that the storage cell is using
    2) How can I find out what the 'System Event - PEF action: 7' is?
    Mark

hmmm... I had an issue with an Exadata X2 some time ago when a user-defined temperature threshold was not giving alerts (later documented in MOS note 1380758.1/bug 13387575 and fixed in 11.2.3.1.0 by the way). At the time I was told that there's no way to see build-in thresholds in cellcli.
As far as the specific error ID goes I don't know what it means, but I'd suggest checking HP iLO documentation in addition to regular Oracle channels.

  • How can i downgrade to ios 4.3 on my ipod touch 4g because it only has 8gb and it takes up all my space. HELP

How can i downgrade my ipod touch 4g to ios 4.3 because i made a mistake of upgrading to ios 5, and i only have 8gb and it takes up basically all my space ! I need help !

Downgrading the iOS is not supported by Apple.
What do you nean by it taking up all yur space? If when connected to the computer is the "other" category very large?  If it is then restore the iPod to get it to its normal of about 1/2 GB.  Sometimes a restore to factory defaults/new iPod is required.

  • 1st Gen MacPro Wake Up, HD activity takes up all CPU cycle w spinning ball

Since I have added an external HD (750GB) to my n-basestation as an NAS, every time I wake up my Mac Pro, the HD will be busy doing something (I have no idea what it's doing as I can get the activity monitor to come up until the HD stop doing whatever it's doing) for somewhere between 5 minutes to 15 minutes before the CPU is freed up to attend to other stuff like reconnecting the Mac to the basestation, connect iChat to the AIM server, etc.
This never happens prior to attaching the HD. It's extremely annoying. Anyone have any idea as to how to get the computer to wake up right away?
    Thanks,
    Sherman

A lot of what you describe sounds like a failing HDD. The one failing of OS X, is that Disk Utility and AHT tend to rely on the drive's internal SMART diagnostics, which isn't always accurate. Sometimes you need to actually stress the drive a bit to find the problem.
And I've seen many iMacs with failing HDDs that then start heating up abnormally, which then causes the fans to kick in (if you're lucky, some have had their logic boards cooked) to try and blow out the excess heat.
Now you seem to be confused as to what system you have. In the subject you say it's an iMac G4, but your signature line says it's a G5, which I'm more inclined to believe since you say it has iSight. Unfortunately for you, that is the model where Apple changed the way the iMac is taken apart. Used to be pretty simple. Loosen a few screws and pull the back cover off. Starting with your model, you have to remove the display to get at the HDD.
Still, all things considered, having the HDD replaced is pretty cheap compared to some of the other things it could be. Since this is a G5 era system, there's always the possibility that the logic board has some bad capacitors, which would mean the system's done for.
I'd really recommend you take it to an Apple Store or local AASP shop where they can run some more detailed diagnostics on it. I'm betting they'll either find a bad HDD or bad caps on the logic board. The former shouldn't be outrageously expensive, the latter means start planning the funeral.

  • Iphone5 deleted most recurring events in Calendar when changing one event and confirming Save for All Future Events

This has occurred now twice today, requiring me to resync my iphone5 in order to recapture the majority of my Calender events that were in place before this mysterious disappearance took place. When I touched the "Save for All Future Events" button, the process took much longer than usual, with this result. My iCloud account is set only for Backups; nothing on my iphone is set to sync with iCloud. Has anyone else had disappearing Calender Events in the new iphone5 or any ideas what may be causing this to happened - never before occurred on previous iphones.

I had the same problem and thought it was fixed after spending a lot of time last night going through all my appointments on my 9900 and fixing them. Then this morning I did a 1-way sync with my PC and after updating all my categories in Outlook I did a 2-way sync just to have the same thing all over again.
I resolved the problem by replacing DM7 with DM6.1
I just can't see how after 6 months this can happen. It's not like syncing calendar appointments is something only a handful of people do.

  • Windows 8.1 - Windows Couldn't connect to the System Event Notification Service service

I have an issue that has been bothering me for a while on new 8.1 computers. Standard users are not able to log into the computer on the first try consistently. They receive the error message: Group Policy client service failed the sign-in access is
denied. They are stuck at the logon screen.
If an administrator logs in (local or domain), they can log in but get a black desktop with two error messages. The first is Location is Not available - C:\Windows\system32\config\systemprofile\Desktop is unavailable. The second error message is a popup
balloon. It states "Failed to Connect to a Windows service. Windows couldn't connect to the System Event Notification Service service."
When a standard user attempts to log in, event viewer records three warnings. They are listed in order from oldest to newest
The winlogon notification subscriber <Profiles> was unavailable to handle a critical notification event. -Logged 9:14:44
The winlogon notification subscriber <GPClient> failed a critical notification event. - Logged 9:14:44
The winlogon notification subscriber <Profiles> was unavailable to handle a notification event. - Logged 9:14:49
After a reboot, users still have the issue. I noticed that the user profile services and system event notification service are not running though their startup type is automatic. They start after a minute or two.

    Hi Joseph__Moody,
Based on your description ,I assume it is a domain environment .First of all ,I would suggest you to try to update all the machine .
"I have an issue that has been bothering me for a while on new 8.1 computers"
Do you mean all the Windows 8.1 machine share the same symptom or just a specific one ?Did the machine work correctly before ?When did the issue start to occur ?Have you installed any third party software before ?Can we operate the machine when we login with
    an administrator account ?
If the issue occurred with the specific machine :
"The first is Location is Not available - C:\Windows\system32\config\systemprofile\Desktop is unavailable."
Please try the following suggestions if we can operate the machine when we login with the administrator account :
Open Windows Explorer and navigate to: C:\Windows\system32\config\systemprofile and verify if it has the Desktop folder there. If the folder doesn`t exit, we can copy from C:\users\Default\Desktop location(This folder is hidden by default).
We also can try the following suggestions to have a troubleshoot :
1.Run "sfc /scannow"or "dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth" to check the health of the system files.
2.Perform a full scan with an antivirus software.
3."They start after a minute or two."
I suspect there is a third party service confilct here. Please perform a clean boot to verify whether there is a third party conflict here .
How to perform a clean boot in Windows

If the issue occurred with multiple machines in the domian ,I would suggest you to check whether you have configured any logon scripts and logon group policy .We can remove the machine from the domain to have  a troubleshoot .
If the issue occurred recently ,we can perform a system restore to recover the machine to a previous normal point.
    Best regards

  • Hi, I have the iphone 4 and I manually deleted all the voice memos on my iphone but they are still on my iphone when I open Itunes

Hi, I have the iphone 4 and I manually deleted all the voice memos on my iphone but they still appear on my iphone when I open Itunes on my computer and they still take up space. I am soon running out of space. Any ideas to permanantly get rid of some of the voice memos?
Am I the only one that really dislike the fact I cannot customize my iphone and cannot delete whatever files I want?
The only options i seem to have is to delete all my files WITHOUT a system restor because I tried doing a system restore  and it puts back all my old files on my iphones.
I'm pretty desperate and any tips would help me a lot

If I understand you correctly, you purchased two albums directly from your iPhone and have successfully transferred the purchases to your iTunes library, but now you want to remove these two albums from your iPhone but having trouble, correct?
If so, you can manually delete the albums (song-by-song) by sliding your finger across each song's name, from left to right, then select the Delete button.
Or, while your iPhone is connected to iTunes click on the Music tab that you see in iTunes (where you specify what items to sync to your iPhone). At the bottom of that window (below Playlists, Genre, etc.) you'll see songs that are "manually" added to your iPhone, just un-check those and re-sync.

  • Regarding the difference between an event and an album in iPhone

As I understand it, and event is a type of permanent" storage of downloaded images from cameras, etc. An album is where you sort them out to make a special album. OK. Mu question is: let's suppose I have pictures in an event and they take up 500MB; and let's suppose, I create an album with all the same pctures. Does this mean that I now have 1GB of pictures or are those picture that are in album, are virtual or ghost pictures?
    Thanks much,
    Emile

Yes if you create an album the photos are ghost images. The phrase used is the photos in a album are pointers back to the original and in your example don't double the storaged used.

  • Snow Leopard upgrade "where is system events" message on first boot

I just upgraded Mac OS 10.5.8 to Snow Leopard via retail DVD on my mid-2007 MacBook Pro (just upgrade, not Erase and Install). The install succeeded and the machine rebooted....Setup Assistant started and I got a pop-up window with "Choose Application" in the header and the message "Where is System Events" and the bottom pane showing the list of applications on the machine and the options to Browse, Cancel or Choose...
What does this message refer to?
    What should I do?

nobody seems to know for sure why this messages comes up for some people after upgrade. some 3rd party app you have is doing it.

it's ok to hit cancel but it's also ok to select 'system events" which is located in /system/library/coreservices". also check your login items. if system events is there remove it from login items.

  • PLS HELP "System Events" Hogging 50-60% of CPU!

    Hi all,
I recently noticed that my Mac (MBP 2.2 GHz) would have the fans going really fast and everything was sluggish even when I wasn't doing much. I checked Activity Monitor and something called "System Events" was hogging at least 50% of the CPU! I force quit it...but after restarting, it was back and again hogging CPU. I checked login startup items and it's not there. Does anyone know what this is and how to disable it? This is getting really annoying!
    Thanks for your any help!

Download AppleJack 1.5 - VersionTracker or MacUpdate - and install it. Read instructions on how to use the program and then run the routines. See if it helps.
When a process hogs CPU time it's usually because it's hung up on something, oftentimes a corrupted cache file. The above may help. Open your Console application and examine the console log and crashreporter log to see if there's any indication of what may be causing System Events to hang.
