System freezes / crashes once a week

Hi, I'm having a problem with one of my Xserves where it crashes once at least once a week, always on off hours but never at the same time twice. There doesn't seem to be any consistency as far as errors in the error logs. Here are snippets of the logs leading up to the last two crashes:

Another weird thing is every once in a while, after a crash, there will be one OD user who cannot log in to their PHD from their workstation, but can log in at other workstations. I've been able to get these users logged in by unbinding the workstation, deleting /var/db/dslocal/nodes/Default/users/user.plist and then re-binding.
The Xserve is a dual core Xeon with 5 GB of RAM and serves OD, Jabber, AFP, RADIUS, SMB, and VPN.
I've tried repairing permissions and upgrading the OS from 10.5.5 to 10.5.6 to no avail. Since the logs never have the same error twice before a crash, I'm left with few ideas on where to go from here. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

A little more info: crashes are happening more frequently now. Always in the middle of the night with no errors reported in the log.
During a crash, services stop working, but the server will still return a ping. If I physically go to the machine, it looks normal until I move the mouse and get a spinning beach ball.
The last log entry is always FileSyncAgent trying to sync a home directory (background sync) of someone who has forgotten to log out at night, but the log entries look normal.
Since, on the surface, it would appear FileSyncAgent is the problem, perhaps I'll start a thread in the PHD forum. Are there any known issues with syncing portable home directories that would explain this behavior in Leopard server 10.5.6?

  • System freezes/crashes

I've only had my new iMac for a couple of weeks but I have already experencied numerous kernal panics (which I think has been corrected by removing 3rd party memory) but also at least 6 system freezes/crashes.  There is no regularity to the problem.  I will simply go to use the machine any everything will be locked. The mouse will not more nor do the keys on the keyboard work.  My only option has been a hard restart.  I've spoken to tech support and gone to the apple store and am getting different answers to the possible problem.  Any ideas as to what might cause the system freeze?  I have since removed all usb devices (had an external hard drive and ipad connected) to see if this corrects the problem.  The Apple store told me the next option woudl be a complete software reinstall which I would prefer to avoid as I do not have access to install programs for a purchased version of office.

If you have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 installed, try installing the 10.6.8 combo update from http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399 . Sometimes the operating system can develop some kinks, especially if Software Update has been used. Repair permissions first, apply the update, then repair permissions again. Then run Software Update to sweep up any other needed updates.  A combo update includes all prior updates for that version of the operating system.
If you have Lion, there isn't a combo update for it yet, as there is only one release at 10.7.1.  You can manually reapply that release from http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1437

  • Linksys WVC54GCA crashes once a week

    Hi,
My Linksys WVC54GCA IP camera crashes once or twice a week. Is there a way to have it restart itself on its own everyday ?
    (I'm running the latest firmware).
I didn't find any way to remote restart it either. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Doing the firmware flash isn't the best place to start troubleshooting this. You should first look at the setup and config of the cam, mainly is it Wireless or Wired?
If wireless, try taking it and plugging the camera into the network and make it use a WIRED connection instead.  Give that 2 weeks and see if it crashes...
If not, your problem is wireless connectivity. Also check if it's on a STATIC LAN IP or DHCP.   These cams don't like DHCP and crash after a few days or a week so try setting your camera to a static lan IP address on your network.
    good luck

  • Humming noise and system freeze/crash!!

hope you guys can give me some advice here! i bought a A1150 macbook pro 15" 2.0ghz 80gb 512mb ram new from a computer store 6-7months ago and my first impressions where good. it was fast, but it got slower especially with using adobe programs, major problem as im a photographer and i only really use photoshop and bridge plus indesign so i need a faster speed. so i upgraded the ram to 1gb. im a student and therefore 2gb was too expensive and also i couldnt afford it as i had stretched myself to buy the comp in the first place over a dell which i had always used before.
anyway over time the computer started to annoy me! some of the keys got very sticky, and the click pad would stick, but also the heat from the macbook pro was intense! it was as if i had slept beside a radiator all night!
but the real problem started about a week ago. i had split my HD into 55gb mac and 20gb windows through bootcamp. annoying that an 80gb hardrive is only 74.5gb!! but anyway, it worked fine, but a few days after i uninstalled windows as i didnt use it much and i had a windows desktop i started having problems. well one problem!!
i was doing a batch of over 200 photos through adobe bridge and a script i had on photoshop with actions when all of a sudden a crazy mooing noise came from the top left corner of my macbook pro! then i got the famous little rainbow ball that started only over the program, i tried opening itunes and safari which i had open at that time but nothing worked. the mouse moved but it didnt respond! so i left it thinking maybe it was just a temperary thing as i had left the ntoebook on for nearly a full day! but after 20minutes the sound was still the same, and the computer was still frozen! i tried the control/apple/escape key - didnt work, then the restart short keys and didnt work. but the holding down the power did work! i ahd to restart it, it started up fine, i tried to figure out the problem but couldnt anywhere! i had lost all of my editted images, which really annoyed me, but i thought it was a one off, but then it did it again.
so i tried working with it with and without the cable as i got a replacement from apple for a new power cable, the old one melted! hmmm how many people have had that? but it kept crashing, whether i was browsing the net, reading emails, editting, watching a film anything basically! in total yesterday it crashed 9 times in using it for 3-4hours! alot of times huh?
anyway the sound sounds like a mooing startup engine on a cold morning which wont fire up! i thought it was the hard drive but tbh it sounds more like a power problem! and its quite noisy!
the problem is that im currently in moldova, eastern europe working for a charity in a gap year. ive got my family to call apple, and they gave me the take out battery rubbish and hold down the powr for 5 seconds. well ive done that lots of times and still it does it. it actually did it 30minutes before i put this post up! so they gave me a few options call up apple and let them guide me througha repair for £35 ($50). or take it to an apple store to be fixed! thats rich when im nowhere near one! so basically they are trying to make me pay to go home to repair my notebook!
i dont know what to do, i feel like asking for a full refund or throwing the notebook at them as its only given me grief. i went 3 weeks waiting for my powercable to come out after it suddenly melted over night!
its my first mac and tbh im almost scared whether to buy another apple laptop, or anything apple related as ive never had these problems witha sony or a dell ive had before on windows!
whats your thoughts? im stuck for words and dont know what to ask from apple!! help is needed!!!
    thanks

P.S. Wonder why I never caught faulty memory caused exception under Windows.
The error was probably in high memory.
Linux tries to use all available memory, while windows tries to minimize memory used .
(and with their memory management method they badly NEED to do that)
To the point. It was the second DRAM plank and the faulty area was around 15.7GB. If it was not Linux, I would probably never know I had out of order memory area. Under Windows I played all the modern games, had tons of open tabs in browser, had few IDEs open at the same moment. It never failed me. From that I conclude that 16 GB of RAM is a huge overkill for a usual desktop.
@nstgc, no it didn't look like this for me. Actually the only repeating pattern I got crashes under was writing to the disk or usb stick. My speculation would be, that kernel allocates write cache memory somehow around the top edge of the physical memory.

  • Does anyone else have Mountain lion stability issues that cause a crash once a week?

I have a mid-2011 27-inch iMac with 16GB ram and upgraded to Mountain lion as soon as it was available (like always for last 5 years); 8th Mac I've owned. Early on there were a few bugs and issues that I thought would go away just like previous upgrades.  But it's been half a year now and I crash about every other day!  This is by far the worst Apple OS change ever, from a stability perspective.  What happens is I will do some mundane task (could be anything really) that will give be a spinning beach ball and then it gets worse.  No programs respond and eventually the only thing to do is complete power off shutdown.  What triggers this: clicking to open photo in Aperture, clicking a website icon in Safari, clicking upgrade software in App Store, running a backup with time machine, etc. etc.  I can't detect any pattern as it's happened a lot.  I'm a photographer so I spend more time in Aperture than most users and see a lot of crashes from there, but it's not just Aperture.  This is getting to be like MS Windows.  Apple - help!  Please fix this OS before I have to buy a PC for better stability.

  • IMac Freezing/crashing, please help. Tried everything! :(

    Hello Fellow MacTalkers,
I am writing this post to ask you for a help with an issue that is very frustrating to resolve.
To begin with, I have purchased my MacBook Pro 2.4 GHZ, 3GB, Leopard running notebook about 7 months ago.
Until recently I have discovered that my computer is crashing randomly.
I am not a very tech oriented person, who knows much about console, logs and sorting out the hardware / software related issues.
About 2 months ago I started to experience some random freezes on my computer. Those freezes were occurring on different type of situations so it was hard for me to identify what could be causing the problem. The most common freezing that I have encountered, was and is that my computer screen just freezes and I can't perform any reset or rescue. Simply hard reset.
I started to think that this could be a cause of getting an extra 1GB memory that I purchased from Apple store, and that the memory could be faulty. But just to make sure I have done a clean re-instal of my os. making sure that I have all my permissions everything that could be a "common" cause of any weird behaviors on a mac sorted.
After the reinstall it got even worse.
I decided to take my computer to Apple authorized centre in Sydney broadway NextByte shop.
I explained the problem, asked if that would be possible to check some sort of console logs and track back what could be the cause of the problem that I am experiencing.
I left my computer for 2 weeks in service. And after that 2 weeks they have replied to me saying that they have detected no faulty with the hardware what so ever. I keep on persisting that I understand that the service people have done all the tests on external peripherals, checked the system performance through some kind of testing tools and it resulted with no problem. I rang the Apple complaints department asking if they could do anything about it as I am very worried that this issue won't disappear. They have informed me that there is nothing thay can do and they are basically sending my back home.
I collected my computer 2 days ago and started setting up some programs like adobe and all my apps. At first it was running all well, but then it started (leopard or hardware) to freeze again. On no particular occasion. I had to crashes in 3 hours.
I remembered the time of the crash and after the reboot, I checked my console and here is what I could find:
    12/05/08 11:00:07 PM com.apple.launchd[1] (0x10b260.mdworker[1036]) Exited abnormally: Segmentation fault
I don't know if that is related to this post in any way, but as I said at the beginning I have no technical knowledge on where to investigate it further.
I would like to ask you for your recommendation on what should I do next.
I hope there is nothing that I am doing wrong with my computer as I am keeping it organized nad well maintained.
I thought also that that could be overheating related issue so I bought a notebook cooler, but that doesn't seemed to resolve the problem.
I am running out of ideas. Apple won't help me in solving the problem, I am also not sure how should I approach this case from the legal perspective. Can I go to fair traiding institution and ask them for help to enforce apple on returning my money for laptop, should I perform any tasks on my computer to fix the problem with some software.
Help, I am really running out of ideas. I am doing graphic design daily and this problem is driving me crazy.
I would appreciate your feedback or any suggestions on what should I do next.
Sorry for my cracked english. Im still learning my lingo in Australia
PLEASE PLEASE, help me on this one.
    Kind Regards,
    Michael Saganowski

For what its worth, it sounds like the Leopard woes I was having before I left and went back to Tiger. I was in leopard for three months and I had too many problems to list here, but some common ones were Random system freezes/crashes (especially in itunes coverflow), Finder freezing, Adobe CS3 crashing and being generally buggy, not being able to run Final Cut Pro and After Effects at the same time.
My advice to you, check your memory if you feel like it could be the problem. If your memory is OK, then wait for the 10.5.3 update which is supposed to be out really soon (like within a couple of weeks or so from what I hear.)

  • System drive crashed...

My system drive crashed earlier this week but thank God I had a Time Machine back up to refer to when I installed a clean version of Leopard on the brand new drive. What I am slowly learning is that some of my apps are not working now. For example Aperture keeps force closing on start up other apps are requiring me to re-register or I have to download a certain item for it to run again! What purpose is the TM backup if you have to go through that hassle? Also my screen seems to have dead pixels which are annoying me big time! I never had those issues prior to the HD crashing. Everytime I click on something on screen, it leaves a small square mark on the screen until I scroll or refresh the screen it will leave. I unplugged the monitor and plugged it back in. I checked the display settings and that all checked out fine. I just want my computer back to how I had it and was hoping that was the whole reason for the Time Machine backups but I guess wrong.

Maybe there is a way to set up Time Machine to do what I want but I never could figure it out. When I set up it originally, it was constantly backing my system up which is what we all want it to do. My issue with that is I noticed when I was not using my computer, it would not sleep because of the TM doing its job. So that is why I stopped the backups in early October. I was hoping to do backups once or twice a week but it seems like its constantly backing up.
It sounds like you have problems with your system.
Time Machine backups shouldn't run constantly, or for very long (after the first full backup). If they do, it's an indication of a problem.
And the problem with your screen is another indication, likely of hardware problems.
I did install Leopard from the disc but can't remember if I ran repair permissions after it was installed. I couldn't see my screen during the install process for some reason. I could see it but it was hard to read. Once the install was complete, then the Leopard animated video played crystal clear. There's a chance I clicked on something I shouldn't have due to not being able to read the screen good.
The fact that the welcome video played means you did an +Erase and Install.+ That did just what it says: it erased the entire contents of your system, and installed Leopard.
If you then transferred/copied/restored things from your backups, that's why you now have the 2009 version of everything.
So with all that said, what is the best option right now?
First, what version of Leopard are you now on? If your Install disc wasn't 10.5.8, and you haven't run Software Update, download and instal the "combo" update. That's the cleverly-named combination of all the updates to Leopard since it was first released, so installing it should fix anything that's gone wrong since then, such as with one of the normal "point" updates. Info and download available at: http://support.apple.com/downloads/MacOS_X_10_5_8_ComboUpdate
Whether you do that or not, run a +Repair Permissions+ via Disk Utility (in your Applications/Utilities folder).
Then run the +Apple Hardware Test,+ either:
[Intel-based Macs: Using Apple Hardware Test|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509].
or if it's a PPC Mac, it's on one of the disc(s) that came with your Mac, and is tailored to it's particular hardware. The disk should have +Apple Hardware Test+ and instructions for running it printed in very tiny type.
If that shows hardware problems, take it to Apple.
And do regular backups. If they run for very long when you haven't changed much, see #D4 in [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum). If they seem too slow, see #D2 there.

  • System Preferences crashes- unable to open for over a week

    Hello-
I purchased my macbook pro, 13" in August 2011. For the past week I haven't been able to open system preferences without it freezing/crashing. I did some research online and found two possible solutions: 1. verify and repair disks, which I did, and it did show that there were errors, but this did not solve my specific problem as stated above; and 2. go to library/preferences/ and remove the apple.com... and similar file, which I also did without success.
I am now lost at what to do. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  • Crashes once week to a blue screen

The PC crashes for example while reading a webpage and displays a blue screen that Windows has found error and shutdown to prevent damage, then it reboots. Happens randomly perhaps once every week in the last months. Drivers are checked.
    Event manager shows these:
    Error 20/03/2015 10:05:48 WMI 10 None
Event filter with query "SELECT * FROM __InstanceModificationEvent WITHIN 60 WHERE TargetInstance ISA "Win32_Processor" AND TargetInstance.LoadPercentage > 99" could not be reactivated in namespace "//./root/CIMV2" because of error 0x80041003. Events cannot be delivered through this filter until the problem is corrected.
    Error 20/03/2015 10:05:44 Ntfs 137 (2)
The default transaction resource manager on volume System encountered a non-retryable error and could not start.  The data contains the error code.

I'm no expert, but over several months I've been pursuing the cause of a similar problem, so I will offer what I have learned so far about troubleshooting such an issue.
First, get the following little tool: BlueScreenView.exe [http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/blue_screen_view.html].  It's free [unless you do the right thing and offer a donation ] and it will allow you to get the offending filename -- it will be highlighted in light salmon [i.e. pink].  Try Googleing that -- or update this Post with the information it shows [if you double click on the row, it will popup a cool little window with all the information -- copy-paste from there, or take a screen shot, etc.
OR, if you don't want to risk installing "unknown" software, there's a way to get windows to pause at the BlueScreen, so you can write stuff down.  I currently have Win 7, so I will give the instructions for it -- If your Operating System is different, the instructions may or may not apply and a Google session may be in order [search on things like "How to configure system failure and recovery options in Windows".  But, for Win 7:
Click on the "Windows" button [used to be the "Start" button] [or hit the "Windows" key].
    Click the "Control Panel" button.
Make sure the thing is sorted by "Larg Icons" [upper right corner].
Find the "System" icon and click it.
Click on "Advanced system settings" [left panel].
Select the "Advanced" tab [I guess that's "Advanced Advanced" or SUPER Advanced ]
Click on the Settings button in the "Startup and Recovery" group [bottom most].
In the "System Failure" group, make sure the "Automatically restart" box is unchecked.
Or, if you have a digital camera [smart phone is great for this], whip it out and grab a snapshot of the blue screen.
In my case it's a memory issue, so I used the Windows memory test to determine that my case is kinda weird -- still working on it [memory fails when populated to 8GB but not to 4GB -- same memory different capacity!].
Another possibility is a bad driver.  This can be due to a driver that needs to be updated, or it was just implemented badly, or some other manufacturers driver is installed [e.g. an nvidia driver for an ATI video card or a Linksys driver for a D-Link card, etc] or it's malware [typical for malware to replace a driver and not function well, thus causing Blue Screens.  Malware removal software should detect such things, but it's been my experience that one version of "Antivirus" [AV] will catch things that another won't and vice versa.
BlueScreenView may help in determining which driver.  Again, try Googling the filename it indicates the Blue Screen occured at [Salmon colored] -- amazing the info/help you can find.

  • Occasionally (but not always), opening Firefox freezes/crashes my entire system. Why is this? Win7 64bit

Every few uses of Firefox, I click the icon to open the program, and my system freezes. Ctrl+Alt+Delete does nothing, Ctrl+Shift+Esc does nothing. The mouse won't move, keyboard non-functioning. I have to do a hard reset of my system (hold power button until it shuts off, restart). No crash report is generated/shown/submitted, probably because my computer freezes before Firefox can even open.
This does not happen with any other program, only Firefox. Running Windows 7 64-bit.
I have to fill out this form on Internet Explorer, because now after restarting my computer firefox won't open at all, regardless of which icon i click.

I have had a similar problem with my system. I just recently (within a week of this post) built a brand new desktop. I installed Windows 7 64-bit Home and had a clean install, no problems. Using IE downloaded an anti-virus program, and then, because it was the latest version, downloaded and installed Firefox 4.0. As I began to search the internet for other programs to install after about maybe 10-15 minutes my computer crashes. Blank screen (yet monitor was still receiving a signal from computer) and completely frozen (couldn't even change the caps and num lock on keyboard). I thought I perhaps forgot to reboot after an update so I did a manual reboot and it started up fine.
When ever I got on the internet (still using firefox) it would crash after anywhere between 5-15 minutes. Since I've had good experience with FF in the past I thought it must be either the drivers or a hardware problem. So in-between crashes I updated all the drivers. Still had the same problem. Took the computer to a friend who knows more about computers than I do, made sure all the drivers were updated, same problem. We thought that it might be a hardware problem (bad video card, chipset, overheating issues, etc.), but after my friend played around with my computer for a day he found that when he didn't start FF at all it worked fine, even after watching a movie, or going through a playlist on Youtube.
At the time of this posting I'm going to try to uninstall FF 4.0 and download and install FF 3.6.16 which is currently on my laptop and works like a dream. Hopefully that will do the trick, because I love using FF and would hate to have to switch to another browser. Hopefully Mozilla will work out the kinks with FF 4 so I can continue to use it.
I apologize for the lengthy post. Any feedback would be appreciated, but is not necessary. I will try and post back after I try FF 3.16.6.

  • Freezes on startup about once a week...

I have a Mac Pro 2,1 quad 2.66 that freezes on the gray screen with the apple logo about once a week or so. When it crashes the progress wheel appears and starts rotating under the apple logo. After that the the progress wheel will just stop and the machine will just sit there. Sometimes it attempts to restart itself but the same thing will happen. Otherwise, the machine operates perfectly with no other anomalies. Most start-ups are successful. Any thoughts?

This issue can be caused by the presence of leftover files in the Firefox program folder (defaults\pref) like a file firefox.js that overrides the update URL with a wrong link.
Do a clean reinstall and be sure to remove the Firefox program folder to remove the file(s) that cause the problem.

I have tried the fore-mentioned solutions with either no results or very bad results which I filed a report but did not receive an answer. The application to block scripts actually worsened the problem and I could not correct the situation for a while (no response from Firefox, at all). I have also been through this procedure without any one contacting me, AT ALL.

There does appear to be any support whatsoever from mighty "non caring" FIREFOX & people are getting fed up. We may as well try another system, if they can't be bothered to provide any support for their system, we can't be bothered to use their system.

    Hi,
After installing X-Fi XtremeMusic to my system a problem appeared. As I noticed It appears mostly when I?m connected to the Internet and downloading something. • Airport Extreme 802.11g freezes/crashes weekly

I have a Airport Extreme 802.11g that I have had for a few years. I use it to connect to the Internet via cable modem, and have both Ethernet and WiFi clients. It has worked fine in the past, but in the last couple months it has started crashing roughly once a week. When it crashes, I can see the WiFi SSID being announced, but when clients try to connect they get timeouts. I also cannot get an IP address via DHCP on the LAN port when it has crashed. Airport Utility cannot reach the Airport from either WiFi or Ethernet when it has crashed.
Power cycling the Airport Extreme fixes the problem every time, but since has happened ~10 times, this indicates a worrisome problem to me. I guess my next step will be to try re-uploading the latest firmware, and perhaps save my configuration to a file and then try restoring the default settings. Is there anything else I can do to try to root out the problem?
If I can't fix it, I suppose I'll buy a Time Capsule, but I'd be happier just getting my current hardware to work reliably.
    Mahalo!

I just inherited one of these routers from a friend. It's running the 5.7 firmware...the latest version. I'm also seeing random lockups. When it happens, only the power light on the AE is on...the other two don't flash at all.
I think it's related to overall traffic, because I was running a program called "namebench" which tries to determine the best DNS servers in your area. It does this test by sending 2000+ requests to name servers as quickly as possible and tallying the response results. When I let the program run only once, it usually works. But when I set it to run the test 3 consecutive times, after slamming the base station for over 5 minutes it would lock up consistently every time.
I've read from a variety of sources that this is a problem that began when Apple upgraded the firmware from 5.5.1 to 5.6. The 5.6 firmware was pulled for a while, and then 5.7 came out, but apparently did not resolve the issue. But there's been no update since.
I could downgrade to 5.5.1 but I'd lose WPA2 support. So if anyone from Apple has any suggestions, that would be appreciated. I realize these are older units, but the 5.6/5.7 firmware versions seem to have some issues that really need to be addressed.
