System Hangup

I just bought a k7n2 delta platinum motherboard, 2500+ Sempron processor, 1GB of DDR Ram, and a Geforce 5700 LE video card.  When the system boots the D-Bracket always hangs at led 1 green, and 2-4 are red.  While it's hanging here I also can not get the monitor to turn on. I've tried 3 different processors, alternated the ram 1 stick at a time, and tried 2 different video cards but still keep getting the same hang up.

Thanks for the reply I'll try clearing the cmos and try this again.
Here's some more specs, not the greatest though since it's mixed in with some new and old parts I have around the house.
512x2 Ultra ddr ram
k7n2 delta platinum mobo
2500+ sempron
300W power supply
256 MB Geforce 5700 LE
80 GB Seagate HD
some off brand 52x cd-rom drive
I'm just getting a little frustrated with this I've never ran into this type of problem before,
maybe it could be a ram problem (although I have
taken a stick of ram out of my main computer that's also running an msi board).
I've tried 2 different processors, 2 different video cards.
When I power it on it even looks like it starts and even sounds like it's going through the boot sequence
but no display and the d-bracket hangs on the display I posted earlier.

  • Why the system hangup with iPhoto ?

    Dear Sir,
Really surprised, Apple, being such a good name in market, and I have been using it for last 8 years,
and now when the problem comes, there is no any response from your end.
Would you please be kind to reply me or guide me how to settle this problem, the movment you start
the ipoto, the system gets hanged, and even if you connect your mobile to sync, the same things is
    there, the movement iphoto starts.
Moreover, have deleted and and re-installed iphoto, but the problem remains same.
    Awaiting for your immediate suggestion.
    Best Regards

You are not talking to Apple here. This forum is made up of volunteer users talking to other users.
There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on 9 different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary depending on the version of iPhoto and the version of the OS. So to get help you need to give as much information as you can. Include things like:
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. As full a description of the problem as you can. For example, if you have a problem with exporting, then explain by describing how you are trying to export, and so on.
    - History: Is this going on long? Has anything been installed or deleted? - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
    - Anything unusual about your set up? Or how you use iPhoto?
Anything else you can think of that might help someone understand the problem you have.

  • System hangups

Not sure if this is the right place, but here goes...
I have a third party wireless network (only because Airport won't support a cellular modem).  Never had a problem.  But now, I'm trying to access a WEP protected site, and after I enter the password everything seems OK.  I can go to different web sites, load stuff, all no problem.  Then all of a sudden the system will hang up and freeze until eventually I get an error message thats says something to the effect that "DNS Lookup failed".
This error only occurs on my MacBook Pro, and only at this location.  I can log on with an iPad and a PC with no problems.  Any suggestions as to what the cause and remedy is?
    Thanks,  John

Have you tried it with 2 or even just 1 stick of ram?
I'm not sure if crucial is double sided of not, but manual shows 333 being the max with 4 sticks of double sided ram.
    EDIT:
    sourced...
Crucial provided us with 2 DDR PC3200 Unbuffered Non-parity memory modules (Part# CT6464Z40B) for the review.  They have a CAS latency rating of 3-3-3-8, running on the default 2.6 Voltage.  As you can see, these modules do not come with heat spreaders.  This is because Crucial does not support overclocking and it will void all warranty.  Heat spreaders are more for cosmetics since all they do is provide a consistent temperature throughout the memory chips.  The modules are also single-sided which means that the modules are less dense and, as we will see, may provide for better overclocking.

  • HD noise, and the system hangup

The iBook i have just started doing some noise, like the fan or HD. The trouble is that it keeps hanging up. I try to restart, and it happens again 2 or 3 times. It freezes at the spining colorful circle, before the desktop appears.
Is there something i can do?

    Hi gseckel,
The first thing to do is to try a safe boot:
If your computer is on, turn it off in the usual way.
Press the power button to turn it back on and immediately after the chime press and hold the 'shift' ket.
Continue to hold the 'shift' key until you see the spinning gear wheel.
Leave the computer to continue to start-up. This will take longer than usual as various diagnostic and repair functions take place.
    Log in at the prompt.
Wait while the computer finishes its 'boot'.
Restart in the normal way without holding the shift key.
That may be enough to fix the problem, if not post back.

The motherboard is KT3 Ultra2 (without Raid)(VIA KT333) DDR-USB2-ATA133. There are no information about the fan speed on the manual. However the PC Alert III System Monitor software show the fan2 speed is 5113 rpm.
When I brought the processor, the fan came with it.
There is no fan information on the graph card as well.

  • HELP! k7t266 pro2-u winxp install

    Hi,
I have a problem with installation of winXP SP1 on my computer. First i got a blue screen in the first step of installation (windows loads drivers, then freezes).  It said that acpi.sys is the problem. I disabled it and then the problem was irq not less... . Then i disabled
internal cache,  system bios cacheable and shadowing options and installation started but the computer was too slow ( it took about an hour to copy the files on hard disk). After the installation was finished i put back the fields internal cache to writeback and c00 32k shadow to cached and left system bios cacheable on disabled ( i read in the manual that it might be a reason for system hangups) to speed it up.  For a while it seemed like it was working ok, i installed the drivers, software... but  tomorrow everything up. windows started to freeze when i tried to encode mp3's from audio cd's, when i tried to install new sofware...
I dont know what to do and don't want to disable   internal cache because of the huge system slowdown...
    Can anyone help !!!

    Hi!
What can your PSU provide in terms of ampères?
Load BIOS setup defaults. Open case.
Have the HDD and the CDRW on different IDE channels and cables, with both as Master respectively at the end of the cable.
    Install VIA 4in1 drivers.
When everything works, make proper BIOS adjustments.
    Best wishes, and good night!
Can't provide the data about my PSU because i'm not at home right now.
    I will do it tomorow.
Cables are already set up like that.

  • Frustrated with Apple Service and Apple Store... Lemon Law?

    Hello,
I'm wondering if anyone has had an experience like this before, and if so, how they resolved it? Also, does anyone have any sort of customer service phone number (not tech support), where I could reach a supervisor, or someone who deals with issues like this on a regular basis?
Let me start from the beginning, and give a quick run-down of my problems.
*First let me say that the first Apple Store I went to is almost two hours away from where I live, and the second store is just about two hours.*
I bought a 17" Macbook Pro (Unibody, 2.8ghz, 4GB, 500GB, antiglare display, etc.), in September of 2009. I had problems from the beginning, originally some problems with both the wireless card, and a general slowness of the machine, combined with a cosmetic defect in the screen. I made an appointment at the Apple Store. At the first appointment, they said they had to order a new display assembly to fix the cosmetic defect. So I drove home, got a call a few days later that the part was in. I called a few days later to say I wouldn't be down for another few weeks, and could they please hold the part for me. I was assured that they would. I drove down about a week and a half later, and was told the part was sent back; apparently the message the gentleman I spoke with on the phone had not gotten passed along adequately. I was a little miffed, but figured accidents do happen, so I'd give the benefit of the doubt.
When I returned to get the display put on, I reiterated the wireless issues I was having (the wireless signal strength was spotty, while my 3 yr old Macbook had perfect strength sitting in the same location [yes, I both alternated which one was on, to make sure there was no interference, as well as had them both on at once]). I was told that because they could not reproduce it there, they couldn't really do much. I also reminded them that the machine was still slow, and they recommended an OS re-install. They then took the machine in back and replaced the display assembly. When they brought it out a while later, the new display had the same problem. I mentioned this, and she said that all the ones that were in back seemed to have the same problem, so there's not much they could do at the store.
I went down again a few months later to let them know that the OS re-install hadn't helped, and that I really couldn't keep driving two hours each way to not get anything fixed. They apologized profusely, and said they could mail the machine to their depot center, where it would be repaired and mailed back to the store, upon which they'd mail it to me. They also ran some tests at this appointment, and discovered that the processor heatsink may be failing. They made a note, and sent it out. I got a call a week later from the technician at the depot location, quizzing me on the exact problems I was having, and spoke to him for almost twenty minutes while waiting for a doctors appointment. (We'd played phone tag for a few rounds before we finally spoke to each other). I described everything as best I could without having the machine in front of me, but I felt that I was a little ridiculed by the technician. The attitude I sensed was "our tests didn't find any hardware failures, so you must be wrong, or lying." He didn't use those words of course, but he didn't exactly hide it too well either. As I was called into my doctors appointment, (so had to hang up) I asked him over the phone to please do as many tests as possible, and use the machine if necessary to reproduce the effects. He said he'd try, and hung up. I received the machine a week later or so, with a sheet listing what had been done. The list reads:
    Labor charge
    Flat rate repair charge
Obviously, I wasn't actually charged for either of them, but absent a more detailed list of what they'd done, the only difference I could detect was that they finally replaced the defective display with a non-defective part.
After another month or so, I returned to the store to let them know I was still having problems, and to get advice. They told me that they'd have to reproduce the issue there in order to do anything. They proceeded to reproduce the issue, and told me that a CLEAN install should do the trick. I did a clean install, and copied things back on very slowly, a few things at a time. The problem persisted even before I'd put much back on.
About a month later, I made an appointment with the other Apple Store (I have two, both about two hours away), and took it down. They reproduced the issue, and said it could be due to a faulty hard drive. They took it in back and replaced the hard drive. I was a little unhappy how many appointments it had taken, but was hopeful that it had finally been fixed.
I got a survey in my email about my satisfaction with my last appointment, so I filled it out honestly: that I had been extremely frustrated and disappointed, but I hoped that the fix that was finally provided would be successful. I was contacted the next day by the Head Genius at the most recent Apple Store I'd visited. She was very nice, and spent some time quizzing me on approximate times of hangups and delays. I told her that it did seem like the problems were still there, but I wanted some more time to verify the specifics, and that they had in fact persisted through the HDD replacement, and that I'd call her back if they persisted.
After very carefully copying things back on (yet again), I realized that it still wasn't fixed. The slow opening of programs had been sped up considerably, but the actual running of the programs was slower than ever, rendering Aperture 3 nearly unusable. Almost every adjustment (and all brush adjustments) will result in a complete system hangup. The few times it occurred to me to open activity monitor BEFORE opening Aperture, I was able to nab a few screen shots using a mouse shortcut I programmed. They show sometimes Aperture uses up to 170% of the processor (!?!), and almost always over 100 when this happens. Other occasions, it's Finder that's eating it up. I ended up with 14 screenshots of about 7 or 8 separate incidents. (Each time, I had to force quit the program, and restart the computer. At NO point was any other program running besides Finder and Aperture 3).
I called her back about three weeks after the last call, and explained that the problems were still happening. She was very nice again, and quizzed me about the problems, and durations of delays and hangups. She said that she'd order a few parts that it could be, and if I brought it down, they'd keep it there until they fixed it. I explained that after six trips of two hours and 90 miles, I'd put a lot of time, energy, lost work, and gas money and tolls into this computer, only to have it still not be fixed. I told her I wasn't sure that I would be able to come down again, and asked if there was any other way we could arrange this, or any other available options. She was very nice, but asserted that this was the only option.
Today, I went down again, and explained to them that I really can't come down again. After $150+ in gas and tolls, plus 28 hours of driving, plus lost wages, I just couldn't do that any more. They were very friendly, and kept telling me they really wanted to help me, but theres not much they could do as far as me not having to come down and pick it up again. A few minutes later, we were discussing the specific issues, and it was actually working for once, and they said that they couldn't replace it without verifying the issue, because Apple would throw a fit. (Understandably). This combined with overheard conversation, and other snippets of things said directly to me, led me to believe that if the issue could be reproduced, the computer would be replaced, and I wouldn't have to drive down again.
A few minutes later, after showing them the screenshots taken previously, we reproduced the issue. Aperture caused a system hang bad enough to prevent showing the dock, quitting, or force quitting (including the keyboard shortcut). I then told them that I had to leave in ten minutes (My sister had a birthday party starting at noon, and they needed adult supervision by that time). They talked for a few minutes and after continually assuring me there was no way around me driving down again to pick it up, told me that they would mail me a box, I could mail it back to the store, and then once it was fixed, we could discuss how to get it back to me. Being in a huge hurry, I grudgingly accepted this, and left.
I guess I'm a little confused that they didn't replace it after reproducing the issue, which they seemed like they were willing to do until I reproduced it.
On a whole, I've been extremely disappointed in Apple Service on all ends, both depot and store, and I'd like to know if there's a number I can reach to get some sort of escalation to at least talk to someone, and maybe get some sort of explanation of how it's okay to have someone make seven (almost eight) four hour trips for one single computer problem with a computer that is under warranty.
At this point, I'm so frustrated, if I could get my money back, and never buy an Apple computer again, I would actually think seriously about it. I was a recent convert (bought a macbook for college in 2007), and thought I would never even think twice about going back, but after this... I'm really not so sure. The only thing that would really prevent me from doing so is probably the $1000's in software I'd have to re-buy for windows, especially since you can't get student discounts twice on one title from most companies.
I think it's pretty unreasonable to expect someone to spend that much money on a computer that is under warranty, even if it's just on gas and tolls. I frankly can't see the logic in that.
Do I have any recourse? Even though it's only been technically "repaired" twice for the same problem (this will be the third) It's been looked at and analyzed seven times. I don't know much about lemon laws or consumer protection/warranty laws, but it seems to me that this should qualify.
If anyone has a phone number or email address of someone a little higher up on the food chain than a head genius at a NH Apple Store, I'd love to get this taken care of. Even a non-tech support customer service number would be helpful.
Thanks in advance, and sorry for the long novel up there.

I would suggest contacting AppleCare and briefly explain your frustration and ask to speak to a senior manager. Be articulate, have all of your facts organized including receipts, case numbers, etc. so when you talk to someone in charge you have your facts in a row. You should be also patient and persistent until you get a solution to your problem.
We are users just like yourself and cannot do anything other than provide some advice.
Had I been you with all the issues you seem to have been experiencing I would have asked to speak to a store manager. However hindsight is 20/20 so that doesn't do any good. If you do decide to go back to one of the stores make an appointment and when you arrive let them know you want to speak to the store manager. Again be articulate, organized and have all your facts ready including ALL documentation.
    Good luck,
    Roger

  • Best power performance AND everydayusable apple setup

Hello, didnt really know hwere to post this guess it more belong under like "computers" generally,
    but! For a while...
        (-THE LONGER VERSION) :
No whait!, let me start where it all began, 2009, a december (erhh.. iii think? Hwatever!) litlle me hwere nearly Totally blank to the computer world. And suddenly it stood there on the table, a shining (it was shining back there) new "hp pavillion entertainment pc" with its smell of fresh plastic mixed hwith the strong smell from the cardboardbox, remember it as if it were yesterday
... Since then.... I have today a good solid pc knowing! (at more advance level cmd, bott menu, recovery, blah, blah... NERD!) here at the last awhile, ive prommised to make a lot! A lot of video projects!
(okay 2, but some big ones!) avchd multilayer 2 hours!!!!
So the poor hp laptop -dual core i2 4gb ram, has been begged to it knees! And simply cant handle it of course! and it have just trough time benn loaded with lots of crap, and is extremly noisy, heat, slow, anoying = unusable!
    SO hwat i need is...
        (-THE SHORTER) :
A computer setup that will EASILY! could handle stuff like that  (avchd, multilayer, 2 hours project) -and simmilar. A total power machine! But Im tired of windows! And ugly cheap looking design! The times have changed and i change with them!
    NOW I WANT APPLE!!
But but but... Hwat should i get????
    1. Im NOT a billionare!
    2. I repeat: NOT a billionare!
    3. I also need portability for every day use beyond the hardcore creative editing and use
    AT LAST:
i saw in front of me this genius plan... With a macbook pro, a tuned one, with as much of ram, cpu, gpu, and everything else as it can posibble have
-the perfect combination of transportabillity, everydayuse and total power!
    When it gets combine with,
    A cinemadisplay
    A extra keyboard
    And a extra magic mouse
And this power macbook pro, with screen, mouse, and keyboard i've found a really good offer at.
    MY ACTUAL QUESTION.... :
Now it is yours turn to please! be creative! Please! Hwat does all you genius heads! think and say?
WILL A super tuned MACBBOK PRO COMBINED WITH ACCESSORIES, AT ALL, BE ABLE TO REPLACE A STRONG MAC PRO, OR AT LEAST BE MORE THAN ENOUGH FOR REALLY HEAVY STUFF? And if yes, HOW strong actually (ram,cpu,gpu...) will it need to have to be "more than enough"?
If no, what would all of  you then suggest that is perfect in relation to everything?

Unless you know for sure that you are not going to use temporal effects or render to a codec that works with MP rendering turned on (Render Multiple Frames Simultaneously) then turn it off. It's better than it was in previous versions but still can cause tremendous delays and even system hangups if you throw in an incompatible effect or render to an incompatible codec.
Set your ram used by other applications to an even number in the top field -- always, and if you do decide to use MP rendering I have a question about your choice for ram allocation there. How many processors are "Actually Used?" I'm getting zero for Other Applications and Zero for AE. You need to change things here. If you cannot allocate an even number of CPU's to AE then don't bother. If you are going to use MP rendering - run a bunch of tests when you have processors assigned to the process and you are leaving at least 2 to other apps and the minimum RAM assigned in MP is an even number. Otherwise, throw 2 or 4 GB of your available ram to other apps at the top and turn off MP.
The location of your disk cache can be anywhere you like. I always pick a big fast drive with lots of space that is not the same as my system drive or the source footage drive unless I have no other options.

  • Panic Attacks

Hi out there, this is my first posting, hope someone can help.
I've been experiencing system hangups and kernel panics for a couple of months now. I upgraded to Tiger, so I could use my i=pod!, and added an additional 512 mb of RAM at the same time (also installed a recommended utility which I've since deleted though it may still linger on somewhere). Everything was fine for a couple of months until I started to get kernel panics at an increasing rate. These mainly, but not exclusively, occur when booting up - up to seven startups on occasion, but not always - or when waking from sleep. Looked at the discussion pages and took out the additional RAM. This made a small difference but not a great deal. On the dealer's advice I did an archive reinstall without the add-in RAM and everything was fine for a few weeks so added the RAM again and everything stayed fine for a couple of weeks until the old problems started up againg. Currently back with the then standard 256 mb Ram only and it is still playig up. Below are the last two panic logs from yesterday and this morning; any ideas or suggestions? Thanks in anticipation

  • External FW Enclosure Woes

    Hi all,
    haven't posted here for a long while, i suppose that's a good thing :P
anyway i'm having trouble with FW, an enclosure, and a HD with two partitions that i want.
The original FW enclosure i had did something strange - when on it caused some manner of interference with my speaker system! Out of the blue one day after several years of reliable use. I figured something serious was wrong (shielding blown or something) and switched over to an older FW enclosure that had a few more features but was problamatic earlier. it still is.
The problem is that after waking up the computer (running 10.4.8) the partitions/volumes don't mount, or are problamatic. Sometimes they seem to work but it's hard to put a thumb on how often the problem occurs - i'd say about 98% of the time anyway. The icons appear on the desktop as normal and no warnings about device removal appear. Trying to open the volumes results in a finder hangup and general system hangup (spinning beach ball). Turning off power to the device, brings back system response (all activity attempted proceeds in a flood of activity) and turning the FW enclosure back on results in the volumes mounting and working.
I've tried resintalling the Tiger Combo update, permission checks and several other problems. I recall doing a fairly extensive troubleshooting round the last time i tried to tackle this problem. This time i've poured through my system log and these are the relevant snipets that seem to hint something's amiss.
Nov 27 00:07:38 ######## kernel[0]: USB caused wake event (OHCI) - mouse click to wake up system
    Nov 27 00:07:38 ######## kernel[0]: FireWire (OHCI) Apple ID 52 built-in: handleSelfIDInt - received quads == 0. issuing bus reset - !!!
    Nov 27 00:16:39 ######## kernel[0]: disk1s12: I/O error. - one for each volume ?
    Nov 27 00:16:39 ######## kernel[0]: disk1s12: I/O error.
    Nov 27 00:16:39 ######## kernel[0]: disk1s12: media is not present.
Nov 27 00:16:39 ######## kernel[0]: disk1s12: media is not present. - this last message ad nauseum
does anyone know what's going on? what those log messages mean? does anyone know how to make sure that those volumes are mounted? I'm not sure how to do it but i assume worse come worse it would be possible to write an apple or shell script that could check that those volumes are mounted once a wake event is called and if they aren't remove any hollow references and remount them?
Help and ideas appreciated (so long as they aren't get a new FW drive)
    Thanks
    DKR

    Hi, DKR.
The handleSelfIDInt messages can sometimes indicate issues with either the FireWire bus on the Mac in question or the FireWire device itself. However, the FireWIre bus is reset whenever a FireWire device is connected or disconnected: that specific handleSelfIDInt message may be nothing more than informational.
Unfortunately, I've been unable to find any specific documentation about handleSelfIDInt on either the Apple Developer Connection or the Developer mailing lists related to either FireWire or the Open Host Controller Interface (OHCI).
In addition to a. brody's advice, I suggest you consult my "General FireWire troubleshooting" FAQ.
    Good luck!

  • Problem booting up on macbook pro

    Hey everyone,
Long story short I bought my macbook pro in August of 2011. Its the 15" with the Core i7 2.2ghz 4GB ram 750gb HD yada yada
Anyways I started having problems and I started noticing it this week.
about a day ago I went to turn it on after turning it off for the night. I noticed that it took forever to get past the Apple loading screen.
I googled and searched and tried everything people were recommending.
    1. made sure nothing was plugged in to mac
    2. booted into recovery HD and did a DU verified, and repaired everything and its permissions.
    3. cleared the PRAM or whatever it is.
    4. reinstalled the latest Lion clinet combo update
    still nothing has fixed it.
I finally got past the stuck at apple loading screen, but now when I try to log in I enter my password and I get the pinwheel and it just freezes.
I finally after about the 20th force restart booted in safe mode and it logged on.
I uninstalled Avast restarted the computer and was able to log in.
what gives? I spent all this money on this toy and its less than a year old already having problems.
I'm about to do a reinstall of Lion and see if that helps. I just need to make a time machine back up.

Do you have your Macintosh HD selected in System Preferences/Startup Disk?
Also, since you're still the warranty period, it might be a good idea to setup an Genius Bar appointment at an Apple Store. I had system hangups, spinning wheel at login and other issues that I felt were graphics related. When I took my Macbook Pro in to have diagnostics run, the graphics and mainboard were fine. However, there were some errors noticed during the hard drive check. It was recommended to replace the hard drive (no charge since I was under Apple Care). Since the hard drive was replaced, I have not had any issues and all the previous issues were resolved.

  • Fixed sound issues under wine, but would like to know how

I managed to get sound working under wine. I have no idea how, but I did. Ill explain and see if anyone can make sense of it.
So I initially set up kmix to where my primary device was my soundblaster card. I would continuously get errors like "creative blah did not work, switching to 'HD audio generic'.
I would not get system notification sounds but things like youtube and movies would. I had no luck with wine. I then started experimenting with the preferred devices and set the generic one to primary. The sound would work, but my problem was reversed. I would get notification sounds but no youtube or media audio. I then tried moving "default" up to preferred, only to get the same result. Neither gave me any sound in games under wine --not to mention the horrible system hangups when using "HD audio generic" and "default"
So I decided I prefer media audio over notification audio and went back to my original configuration. The result was that I still got system notifications but no media audio. At this point, I became very confused and started experimenting with changing the sound profiles. Any sort of chage at all would create a "dummy device" as playback out of my creative card. About 15 reboots later and luck? maybe, I got it to at least give me notification audio. I was stumped. I also noticed that the hangups were returning.
After exhausting all the options, I was like "oh well better move the HD audio Generic back up" and see what happens. Reboot. Somehow, I got media audio AND wine sound worked as well as the system hangups stopping.
I have no idea. Anyone have a clue?
Im glad its working, but im not going actually going to learn anything unless i figure out what happened.
    Thanks in advance.

Update: Ive found at least a modicum of consistency here. If I try to change anything in the preferences at all once I get wine audio working, it will stop working.
Thus far, here are my options..I can have
System Notification audio working and nothing else
System notification audio and media audio working, but no wine
Media Audio and Wine Audio working, but no system notification audio
    But not all three
If I change one preference, wine audio on its own will stop working, or wine audio AND media audio will quit working.
If I change it back to the settings which allow wine audio and media audio to work, it usually will not. It will however work, consistently after enough reboots...2-10.
    Any ideas?

  • Starting from scratch question

I have both Carbon Copy and Time Machine backups. I have a question, I want to do a clean start, is it possible to reformat my drive, put in my operating system 10.6.2 from disc and then pull what I want from either back up program. Will it bring over anything from my old operating system? I live in Mexico and was told by a tech at our local Mac place (they fix macs, not an authorized dealer) that because of the slow starting and system hangups I should start from scratch. My original office and other program discs are in the U.S. and I won't be able to get them for awhile. They are all original programs that I own and have them backed up on an external. I just don't want to go through inputing a new operating system and then migrating anything that is causing the hangups back. Thanks for the help.

Before you do anything, you might want to run SMART Utility, just to be sure that your hard drive isn't starting to fail and causing all these problems:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/systemdiskutilities/smartutility.html
You can download the demo and run it several times for free. SMART Utility is somewhat more critical than Disk Utility, and may find impending hard drive failure sooner. If your drive is headed south, then you would want to replace it.
I'm not all that familiar with CCC since I use Super Duper to clone, so I don't know what would be involved in restoring from a CC clone. However, I recently replaced my hard drive, and restored from a Time Machine backup, and that seemed to work well. I had to update the OS, so I feel that I had a completely fresh copy of it.
    Hope this helps!

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes) in the String Matching text field. You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard." Note the timestamp of the last such message that corresponds to an abnormal backup. Now
CLEAR THE WORD "Starting" FROM THE TEXT FIELD
so that all messages are showing, and scroll back in the log to the time you noted. Select the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste (command-V) into a reply to this message.
If all you see are messages that contain the word "Starting," you didn't clear the text field.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don't post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.

  • Resuce & Recovery 4.31 on Windows 7 - problems

Running Rescue & Recovery 4.31.0007.00 on Lenovo W700ds running Windows 7 Ultimate 4GB RAM, 32-bit OS. Intel Quad Core Q9000 @ 2 GHz. All MS updates applied – to 6th Jan 2011. Installed R&R v4.31 from within the Lenovo ThinkVantage Toolbox. Have uninstalled and re-installed to see if problems go away – they are persistent. Have tried the 2nd drive in both the 2nd drive bay of the W700ds, and also in a ultrabay caddy. In both cases the drive is found by bios, and can be read from and written to – is shown under My Computer. Indeed R&R can find the drive when you select Create Rescue Media – I wrote this to the E: drive. However under R&R backup locations – the second hard drive is not found. “Free Space” is unknown. When I try Apply then I get an error msg that just says "The free space on" - nothing else apart from "Yes" "No" buttons. After I press Yes or No then the msg disappears and the Apply button on the panel is greyed out. At a loss now what to do to backup my Windows 7 system. - All this worked happily on the old XP image on same hardware (and with previous release of R&R).

    Ok Herik,
I and probably a few hundred other people who will read this have the same issues with Rescue and Recovery 4.3.1. So how about posting your solution on why R n R does not recognized multiple partitions for USB connected HDDs to perform a simple backup?
It seems the product basically was not thoroughly tested before it was released and hyped as the greatest recovery tool since mankind. We're all a bit under-whelmed with Lenovo's product and eagerly await a CLEAN version of the RnR tool that can perform backups like other backup tools (including... oh my god! MS Windows 7!) can flawlessly perform.
It is so frustrating to be sold a crappy tool like Rescue and Recovery! Just google R n R + problems + backups + Win 64 bit + HDD not recognized + system hangup + 0% backedup + confusing installation + etc. + etc. + etc. When one is done googling the aforementioned, then change the word "backups" to "recovery" and see how many problems end users are also experiencing when they try to do a restore.
It would be really helpful if you or some other Lenovo guy would just post one thread with all the problems along with all "solutions" (also known as end user forced workarounds for known bugs and issues) so that we don't have to peck and hunt through multiple threads dealing with R n R's shortcomings.
    Thanks in advance
