System Imager back to showing var, tmp, and etc

Anyone notice that after the 10.4.8 update, that var, tmp, and etc are showing up on Netinstall images? This used to be a problem up to 10.4.3, but it appears to be back.
Anyone else having this problem?

Hi Martin,
I can't help a lot; my stupid Script Editor and AppleScript have also changed. AppleScript just seems to get flakier and it's more than I want deal with much. However, I'll tell you what I found out, even though it's the opposite of a solution.
My Script Editor won't let me save a POSIX file reference either. I can tell you that you can change (file "MyHDName:private:var") to (folder "MyHDName:private:var") and you won't get the error. Of course that's not what you want since it's the symbolic link and not the directory to which it points whose visibility you want to change. I now also get the same error with the command that you posted but the following produces no error for me:
tell application "System Events" to set the visible of (POSIX file "/var" as alias) to false
Of course you can't save it but you can run it. However, you can save it as a shell script that uses the osascript command:
osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to set the visible of (Posix file "/var" as alias) to false'
However, this is ultimately no help either because you don't have privileges as a regular user to change the properties of this symlink. Since it's not a "do shell script" command, you can't invoke administrator privileges as far as I know. You can't change the ownership or permissions of a symlink from the command line so the only thing of which I can think is to enable the root user and login as root and run the command. It seems that in order to make AppleScript secure, Apple has made it almost useless as an administrative tool. Hopefully someone more knowledgeable and less frustrated with AppleScript will know how to get administrator privileges.

  • Do I still need to use the old mobile me backup system for backing up a mac desktop and if I delete it will it affect the memory of my system which has now Maverics

Do I still need to use the old mobile me backup system for backing up all my data and having it able to get at in case of a crash, or can the icloud reset everything? Because I can not find any structured refrence, as to how it would be done. I am updated to Maverics. Also does the icloud continue if I uninstall the backup to free up space?

MobileMe was discontinued in 2012 and all the data stored on it was deleted, and iCloud can't make backups of Macs.
What I recommend you to make backups is to get an external drive and use Time Machine or an application like Carbon Copy Cloner. With this, you can access to your data everywhere and safely, and then, if you want, use a cloud storage service like CrashPlan. You can keep on using iCloud without backups

  • How do I get the top bar back that shows page description and the Firefox logo?

The bar at the top of Firefox that appears on every program above the menu bar is gone.
As in, the bit that normally displays the page title, and the firefox logo. It now looks indistinguishable from Chrome. I'm not in full screen mode.
When I click and drag firefox to the top of my screen to snap it to my monitor size, the firefox logo and the title are shown for the instant until it snaps, but as soon as it snaps it's gone (and generically everywhere).
I want to be able to see what browser I'm in at a glance, and see the title of the page I'm on. How can I resolve this?

  • Errors 0x80070057 and 0x800703ed creating 'system repair' and 'system image' DVDs

I have an HP620/WZ294UT#ABA using Win7 which I bought in May2011. At that time,
I successfully created the DVDs listed above.
Last week, while using Adobe Flash Player 10 to listen to an audiocast,
after about an hour, I lost my internet connection. Other things were also
wrong, so I re-booted. However, after trying to signon, it just hung and clocked.
Waited over 10 minutes, but I never got my background image nor the taskbar.
Multiple re-boots failed the same way. Since I couldn't start any monitors,
I don't know what was wrong.
I ended up using the above DVDs to successfully (apparently) recover my system
via f11. It seemed to work, however, on the final 'system image' DVD, I got an
error 'unreadable 0x80070570'. However, my system seems to be working OK.
I re-installed all my own software that I installed since that backup.
However, I wanted to make an updated set of DVDs so that,
    1. if the 'unreadable' error was due to a faulty DVD
    2. if my system failed again, I wouldn't have to re-install so much software.
However, both the above functions failed as stated above.
For the 'create system repair' function, either thru your menus, thru
Control Panel, and even thru recdisc.exe, it fails. ProcMon shows this:

My f: drive does NOT have a Recovery DIR, and my c: drive does not have a
WindowsRE DIR in its Recovery DIR. Further, the \Windows\System32\Recovery DIR
only has 1 file, and not what ProcMon says what is being accessed.
I found something VERY DISTURBING in your Web site, which SEEMS TO IMPLY that
these above functions can ONLY be run once:
"CAUTION: The HP Recovery Manager allows the creation of only one (1) set of
    recovery discs,".
If so, that's VERY horrible; when my software is changed/updated, how am I
supposed to be able to recover my current system without a new 'system image'?
Am I screwed here, and will I be forced to spend many hours recovering my system
to make it current? Patiently awaiting your answer...

  • Accidentally deleted /var/tmp directory and I'm now stuck in an infinite restart loop

So guys, I was poking around and I accidentally deleted that file. I am now stuck in a restart loop that sometimes ends with a white kernel stop sign in front of  a black screen. When that happens, I am forced to restart my computer again.
Every time I restart, the loading bar is about 1/5 of the way there when a series of messages show up on the top left of the screen. I took some pictures of the message, and I have inserted it below.
Again, the directory is /var/tmp, and I am not sure if it was /private or not. I'm sorry.
The kind person who fixes this issue will get my undying respect.
Again, thank you guys very much.
I own a 2012 15 inch MBP, if that helps.

In addition to what greg sahli suggests, also issue the commands:
    chmod 1777 /var/tmp
    chown root:wheel /var/tmp
My commands and greg sahli's suggestions ASSUME that you did not delete other things essential for the normal operation of Mac OS X.
Otherwise you will have to follow mende1's advice and reinstall Mac OS X.

Is this image recovery working properly when my system got in big trouble???

When requesting assistance, please provide the complete model name and product number of the HP computer in question. HP/Compaq makes thousands of models of computers. Without this information it may be difficult or impossible to assist you in resolving your issue.
The above requested information can be found on the bottom of the computer, inside the battery compartment, or on the BIOS startup/setup screen. Please do not include the serial number. Please enter the model/product information into HP's Online Consumer Support page and post it here for our review.
Please use Windows "System Image Backup" utility to create an exact image of the Windows 8.1 partition as it currently is, on an external hard drive. You may also need to create a Windows "repair" disc. If your computer developes issues or you need to replace the hard drive, all you have to do is "restore" the image to the computer. Please see Windows 8.1 Tip: Use System Image Backup for instructions on creating and restoring a "Windows - System Image Backup."
This process is not a system recovery and is different than using Window Restore or Refresh, or HP System Recovery.

  • System Image Utility fails to create boot image

I am not able to successfully build a boot image with the System Image Utility. The build starts and runs for about 1 minute and then I get 100's of ditto messages saying "No space left on device". There's plenty of space left on the device. Eventually I get a GUI message stating the there was an error creating the image. The image is of course unusable. This only happens on a Boot image. I have no problem making an install image from the same source. Is it just me??
    Xserve G5 Dual   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

I had simililar problems with much headscratching as the result.
I found that whenever I tried to create a boot image with System Image Utility (SIU) using an image file of my existing system as the source SIU would fail with the annoying "No space left on device" message everytime. I did a little investigating and found that SIU always created a 400 MB disk image file to copy to. So the error message was correct as my source was way over 4 GB.
I checked the manual and found the embarrasingly simple solution. It's not mentioned directly, rather it is stated that when you want to create an boot image from an existing system you should boot the machine containing the desired system on disk from an alternate source and the run SIU on that machine. The "trick" is that you're running SIU with the existing system mounted as a disk.
So I went back to my Xserve, mounted the image so it appeared on the desktop. Ran SIU and chose the mounted volume as the source instead of the image file, and hey presto!
MacBook Pro, Xserve, eMac, iMac... any Mac I can get my hands on   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

  • [IDS CS3 WIN] .tmp and .idlk files not getting cleaned up

I'm using a C# Soap client with CS3 Server on Windows. My script is opening a template file, importing a tagged file, then saving an ID document and generating a PDF file. The script closes the document before quiting, but I'm seeing a trail of .idlk and .tmp files left behind on the server.
Example: I'm starting with the following files... importTemplate.indd and importTest.txt. The script opens importTemplate.indd, imports importTest.txt and creates importTest.indd and importTest.pdf, then closes the document.
For testing purposes, these files are all located in the same location. What I see in the directory after the script has run (successfully) now includes the following:
    tes493.tmp
    ~importtemplate~uvw2ve.idlk
    ~importtest~borbth.idlk
    ~importtest~myhstu.idlk
I am closing the document with the following:
    app.documents.item(0).close(SaveOptions.no);
I could understand if the document wasn't getting closed that I would see one .idlk file, but why 3?
Has anyone else encountered this problem?

    Hi again
does the '3 days ago' actually set the time? so '1 week ago' would be valid too?Ah, was afraid you might ask that
'3 days ago' does "set the time" as you say. '1 week ago' might work, but the man pages are not particularly helpful on what works and what doesn't. The find man page refers you to the cvs man page, which says:
However, cvs currently accepts a wide variety of other date formats. They are intentionally not documented here in any detail, and future versions of cvs might not accept all of them. But that gives an example of "1 hour ago" being valid, so I tried a few variations
wacking whole directories scares me... especially since there are live directories in here that I think shouldn't be deleted... can I take this part out?Yes, you can leave out the complete second "find" command if you wish. But applications shouldn't leave files or folders lying around in /tmp or /var/tmp and expect them to still be there when they come back!
excuse my ignorance what language is this? This is the Bourne Shell or more accurately bash. You can try reading the man page, but if you're interested I think you'd find an introductory shell scripting book a lot more readable!
My weekly hasn't run since Nov 18th but the Monthy and daily both say Dec 1st!!!No problem. My weekly hasn't run since Nov 15th. It will eventually get run, after about a week of cpu time (not sleeping).
Now that the periodic scripts are managed by launchd, rather than cron, they do eventually get run. Unless you are running a busy server with hundreds of users, rotating the log files is no big deal with today's typical disk sizes.

  • /var/tmp not getting cleaned out...

This might not exactly apply to the Finder, Dock or Dashboard but it is file maintenance, and I don't see a closer match.
I've noticed that my /var/tmp directory has a lot of files that are pretty old. There's 3 directories there that seem to be written to daily...those I wouldn't touch... But there's a whole bunch of files that are named things like: 4568943754a6d... around 56M worth each is ~1.5M
Why are these not getting automatically cleaned up? Is there a limit to this directory that could be causing me issues. I have several but I don't dare mention them here for fear of being told to open a new post
    Thanks!

    2. Insert the line "auth sufficient pam_encfs.so" into /etc/pam.d/login and append "use_first_pass" to every subsequent line (see below)
    3. Change the source and target in am_encfs.conf to /var/.tmp and /var/tmp, and change "allow_other" to "nonempty"
    4. Add fuse to the modules array in /etc/rc.conf
    5. Add myself to the fuse group
    6. Run "sudo encfs /var/.tmp /var/tmp" and set it up with the default options and my login password
When I restart and login, however, /var/tmp is not mounted. I can manually mount it with "sudo encfs /var/.tmp /var/tmp".
    Here is my /etc/pam.d/login:
    #%PAM-1.0
    auth required pam_securetty.so
    auth requisite pam_nologin.so
    auth sufficient pam_encfs.so
    auth required pam_unix.so nullok use_first_pass
    auth required pam_tally.so onerr=succeed file=/var/log/faillog use_first_pass
    # use this to lockout accounts for 10 minutes after 3 failed attempts
    #auth required pam_tally.so deny=2 unlock_time=600 onerr=succeed file=/var/log/faillog
    account required pam_access.so use_first_pass
    account required pam_time.so use_first_pass
    account required pam_unix.so use_first_pass
    #password required pam_cracklib.so difok=2 minlen=8 dcredit=2 ocredit=2 retry=3
    #password required pam_unix.so sha512 shadow use_authtok
    session required pam_unix.so use_first_pass
    session required pam_env.so use_first_pass
    session required pam_motd.so use_first_pass
    session required pam_limits.so use_first_pass
    session optional pam_mail.so dir=/var/spool/mail standard use_first_pass
    session optional pam_lastlog.so use_first_pass
    session optional pam_loginuid.so use_first_pass
    -session optional pam_ck_connector.so nox11 use_first_pass
    -session optional pam_systemd.so use_first_pass
    and my /etc/security/pam_encfs.conf:
#This file is parsed top to bottom, until the first mount line that matches is found, then it stops.
#Note that I dont support spaces in params
#So if your for example gonna specify idle time use --idle=X not -i X.
#If this is specified program will attempt to drop permissions before running encfs.
#(will not work with --public for example, as that requires encfs to run as root)
    drop_permissions
#This specifies which options to pass to encfs for every user.
#You can find encfs options by running encfs without any arguments
    encfs_default --idle=1
#Same for fuse, note that allow_root (or allow_other, or --public in encfs) is needed to run gdm/X.
#you can find fuse options with encfs -H
    fuse_default allow_root,nonempty
#For a mount line, - = generic, we try to fill in what we need.
#A Mount line is constructed like this:
    #USERNAME if "-" or "*" gets replaced with $USER
#SOURCE if USERNAME is -, replace with path + /$USER
    # if USERNAME is *, replace with $HOME/ + sourcepath
    #TARGET PATH if - replace with $HOME
    # if USERNAME is *, replace with $HOME/ + targetpath
    #ENCFS OPTIONS encfs options here is encfs_default + encfs_options
    #FUSE OPTIONS encfs options here is fuse_default + fuse_options
#Keep in mind that the configuration file is parsed top to bottom, so if you put your generic line on top,
#that will always match before any custom lines under it.
#In this example, with example_user uncommented, the "-" line will never be parsed if you login as example_user.
#In the lines with the USERNAME "*", all paths are relative to $HOME
#USERNAME SOURCE TARGET PATH ENCFS Options FUSE Options
    #example_user /mnt/enc/example_user /home/example_user -v,--idle=1 allow_root
    #* .private private -v allow_other
    - /var/.tmp /var/tmp -v,>/home/ian/log nonempty
The ">/home/ian/log" option at the bottom was an attempt to direct the output of the command pam_encfs runs to a file, but it didn't create a log file when I tried it. If anyone knows how to do this correctly, that would probably be pretty helpful, since it's difficult to debug without knowing what's failing.
Thanks in advance for any advice.

I think I figured it out. It is indeed a configuration issue.
I found a post on the internet where someone suggested putting the items I had added to /etc/pam.d/system-auth in /etc/pam.d/system-login instead. I also read the documentation for PAM linux (http://linux-pam.org/), as previously I had only been reading the documentation for pam_mount. Then, by looking at all of the files in /etc/pam.d/ I figured out what was going on.
I turns out system-auth is just used by too many other services. In particular, I believe it was the use by the systemd-user service that was causing an issue in this case.
The catch was that system-login is also used by systemd-user, so even that probably wouldn't have fixed the problem.
What I ended up doing was creating a new file that contained only the pam_mount and pam_ecryptfs lines I had added to system-auth previously. Then I modified system-local-login and system-remote-login to include that new file.
I'll also need to make some modifications to the appropriate file for the graphical login manager when I set that up.
Marked thread solved in case this helps anyone else in the future.

  • Install Windows System Image

    Hey everyone,
I'm running Lion on a 2011 MBP and have a Windows System Image backed up from an older bootcamp partition I'd like to install. Is there any way to create a disc of the system image and install from that?

You might see if you can restore it using CloneX - MacUpdate or CNET Downloads

  • Randomly webpages will not load or all images don't show

I recently started using my cousin's wifi, and she has AT&T. I noticed that when I'm browsing the web, some websites don't load and it says I'm not connected, even though I'm on other websites at the same time and they work perfectly fine. Also, some images don't show up and instead I get the box with the blue question mark. For example, if I search "pizza" on google, the first few images will show, then the rest are the blue question marks. When I use the internet on my ipod, the same blue question marks show up on some images. The two other computers in the house are desktop pcs connected to the same network, and they are working perfectly fine.
There are even times when I go to a page (most often it is twitter) and it looks like the most basic form of html, everything is left aligned, the text is plain, images don't show at all, and it hardly looks like a website any more. I've tried resetting safari, emptying the cache, and restarting the router. I've also heard about editing the firewall setting, but mine isn't even on. When I go to System Preferences>Network>Assists Me>Diagnostics and then follow through with the steps, it says everything is working fine. When I go to preferences on the safari menu and click appearance, the display images box is checked. I even downloaded google chrome to make sure it wasn't just Safari, but I'm getting the same problems.
Before I started using the AT&T wifi, I was using the wifi at home for a long time, and there was not a single problem. Even before that, my cousin had a different network that I was using for the wifi and there weren't any problems. So I'm almost certain there is a problem with the AT&T wifi. I really don't know where to begin to fix this, the internet still works, it's just glitchy, so I can't even think of what the problem could be. I don't know if the specific issue is with my computer or the wifi, but I'm hoping I can start here before I call for support. Maybe there is something I can change/edit within my computer that can fix this.

    thanks for the quick reply
i tried everything you told me but its still not working. When i try and download its redirecting me as every download page should do, so that ok. But when the .dmg and .zip page will start loading it will stay blank and stop loading on.
I checked the download folder and even the preferences and nothing is showing up. I think its more of a permission problem than from the browser since all browsers are doing this.
I had Norton 2010 installed and was removed maybe it was the source of the problem but still.
    More help is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
    Teo
