System Overload with 6 audio tracks and 2 instrument tracks!!

Hello, this is my first post. I'm learning how to use Logic Pro 7.2.1. I had 6 audio tracks open and 2 instrument tracks. I press play and I get an error message saying there is a system overload. I'd also received this message with garageband and hardly any tracks, but before today I got the message once, clicked OK and then was able to continue.
Also in the transport window right underneath the tempo, my version had the number 201. I realized that I can increase this number of memory to 2158. But in the Apple Pro Training book by Peachpit press, I see screenshots of their transport window and they have 899,852.
After calling Apple it appears that this is a case which requires me to pay $199 to get help from them, but to me it is either a bone head mistake by me or a problem with my computer I imagine. I would really appreciate some help. Thank you.

I have got plenty of system overloads on my powerbook and I only had about the same amount of tracks you had. The way I overcame the problem is by first making sure that no other programs are running ( Just to be safe). Then you should freeze the tracks that you are not editing at the time so the audio engine does not have to process all of it in real time. You can freeze all the tracks if you wanted to but you can only edit the ones that are not frozen. The freeze button looks like a snowflake on each track. Just click it and hit play and it will take a second to process it and then you will not have to worry about that track taking up so much audio processing power. You can go to the view menu and make sure the Track Freeze Button is enabled so you can used it. Try it out it should help you out.

When I try to open a project, the only option for a new track is for external MIDI device; when I try to open an audio or software instrument track, I get an error message saying that "the specified number of tracks could not be created. Reduce the number of tracks to create and try again." I didn't specify ANY number of tracks. Thanks for help!

Ah.. then I suspect you just need to go to Logic's prefs/Audio and check CoreAudio...
    It has been unchecked somehow...
Also.. as an aside.. Be careful not to create such large subject names in future when posting here.. They can cause issues with replying to posts in such threads.. due to a bug in the forum software.. so please keep them short and to the point...

  • How many vocal and instrument tracks

How many vocal and instrument tracks is Logic studio able to handle. Thanks for the help!

    Hi
On paper it all should work. In actual real-world conditions ... there are no assurances that you won't have issues. Troll the message boards and you'll see. I "upgraded" OS only to have lots of buggy behavior. I ran back to Tiger 10.4.11 and I don't want to mess with a smoothly running system. Of course, that means I'm still with Logic 8, as for now that's ok, I have to admit I would like to have a functional flex time and the guitar sims & pedal board FX, but I'll wait for the OS and Logic bugs and driver issues to be worked out before I dump my now stable and high capacity system.
Keep in mind that there are lots of very friendly and helpful people here in the Logic forums who can offer many good solid tips and help with buggy behavior. Kudos to them all.
    Best of luck to you.
    Cheers

i get an error message saying "system overload, the audio engine was not able to process all the required data in time (10011)

The thing is, that error message has been appearing when playing/recording a track that was running perfectly a few minutes ago and nothing has changed!
That can mean, that your project is too ambitious for your Mac. Are you using many complicated automations on that track?
4GB memory is not much, when doing audio processing. GarageBand will need all memory it can get, or will be forced to continually swap pages to your disk, to free RAM, and that can cause this error.
When this error occurs, it is best to restart the computer. This will free your RAM. Close all other applications that are competing for memory, i.e. other multimedia applications, and Safari.
Also, make sure, that you have plenty of free disk space. Don't let the free disk space drop below 20G.
Where is your project located? On an external drive or your internal drive? If it is on an external drive, connect this drive directly, not daisy-chained, or move the project to your internal drive.
I got up to eat, came back and tried to continue but GarageBand shuts down and displays that message every time I try to run the song. I've also recently run songs with several more tracks than this one and they worked perfectly. Any tips?
Are your other projects, that worked perfectly, still working?

  • Logic Pro missing audio files and instrument patches

    Good morning
Last week I downloaded  Logic Pro version  9.1.8 from the App store.
I have downloaded all the additional copntent listed
I am running a brand new IMAC with OSX10.8.2
The instrument choices and patches show up.....
However  many of the audio files and instrument patches are missing.
Prerecorded songs can be loaded but...
When I open a logic song (recorded on my prior IMAC) and recorded within Logic Audio 9.0.0, I get consistent messages such as
    EXS24 Instrument "Classical piano.exs"  Audio file "BDorfer f O d#.aif not found.
This happens with most most of the patches.
    Many thanks for your help

The only things missing from the App Store version compared to the Boxed set are the loops and samples that came as part of Soundtrack Pro and those are no longer available..
However, the sample you mentioned is actually part of the GarageBand Library.... Did you install GB too?
If you did so... then... three things..
    First, try using FindAnyFile
    http://apps.tempel.org/FindAnyFile/
(Download the version on that webpage and not the App Store version)
..and do a search for BDorfer.. (Just that and nothing else) and see if it finds your missing file.
If it doesn't find it.., install GB and try again... (You may need to rebuild Spotlight afterwards as described below)
If it does find it then..
Two.. rebuild GB's Loop index as this fixes all kinds of weird things in Logic... (and yes, i know its loops not samples but it's worth trying based on past experience fixing these kinds of issues)
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2443?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
    and... if that doesn't work..
    Three... Have you reindexed Spotlight?
    http://osxdaily.com/2012/01/17/rebuild-spotlight-index/
Logic uses Spotlight to find everything it needs.. so that is worth a try too if everything else fails..

  • Gettin audio track and instrument in time.

i have logic pro 7.2 but when i import an audio track and then try to create an audio instrument in the matrix edit i cannot seem to get the audio instrument in time with the audio track and they both hav the same bpm. so cannot anyone help me plz im sure its a simple thing 2 do

Presuming the tempos are a spot on match, then It's all about locking the first downbeat of the audio to the track, in this example ( a drum loop ) the orange anchor point is locked to the first kick drum of the audio in the sample editor, so no matter where I drop the audio, it'll always be in time.
If the start point is not as clearly defined, the just move the anchor around till it sounds right.

  • Two Mics using Audio Buddy and Fast Track Interface

    Hey,
the problem i am having is that i am trying to have both mics being used to record at the same time. both are plugged into the AudioBuddy pre-amp, which is plugged into the fast track interface, which is connected to the computer. in logic, i have two different audio tracks opened, one with input one, and the other with input two, but i can only get pick-up from one mic. suggestions?

Are you getting signal at the Audio Buddy (green leds both light up)?
On the Fast Track interface, I see only ONE mic input and ONE 1/4" input. In their website, I see that it is a SWITCHABLE INPUT.
    http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/FastTrackUSB.html
    " switchable instrument/line input (1/4”) "
This means you can only record ONE input at a time, not both at the same time.
You will need a larger interface in order to record two or more signals at once.

  • How to insert pictures without effecting the audio 1 and sound track

I am new to Premiere elements 10 and I am having trouble when I am moving clips such as pictures into the middle of the timeline between video clips.
When I move a picture directly to the middle of the time line it clips and separates the music I have on the soundtrack.   I found through Lynda.com and Adobe Help that if you hold down the "alt" key while inserting the new picture you will not effect the soundtrack or other tracks.   This issue I have with the alt key is now the rest of the clips in the timeline have the audio 1 track and the video 1 track offset by the duration of the picture that was inserted.  My project is over an hour long so its hard to go back and straighten this out.
What is the best way to handle this???
Adding extra video clips into the middle of the project works great with the alt key because the video 1 and audio 1 moves together.

    Steve,
I did purchase the book and it has been quite helpful.  One more question on pictures.  One page 46 you talk about downsizing the pictures and unchecking frame to scale on page 48.   My computer was crashing after putting in about 1 hour of video and few hundred pictures so I was pretty interested in this suggestion.
When I resize the pictures to 1000 x 750 and uncheck the frame to scale my pictures show up too large on the screen and crops off part of the picture.   Of course if I go to 640 x 480 it looks OK.   I am not really sure what the advantage of unchecking the frame to scale.  It seems like a fail  safe method.
I am using a project setting DV NTSC since that matches my mini DV tapes.
    Question:
    1.   Better to resize to 640 x 480 and uncheck frame to scale?
    2.  resize to 1000 x 750 and leave the frame to scale checked?
    3. Resize to 640 x 480 and change the project setting so future pictures will not be frame to scale?
I just want to have the system more reliable and quit crashing but still maintain the high quality.   I am using a AMD Phenom II x 4  830 processor, 2.8 G Hz, Windows 64, 6 GB RAM.
The first option means I have to reload all my pictures. Changing the size in the same folder with Photoshop process multi files is easy, but I cannot change the frame to size without reloading everything since it was originally checked when I started the project.

  • Some advice on audio formats and converting tracks

_*Some thoughts about audio formats and conversions. These are all supported by iTunes unless stated otherwise.*_
General principles : there is no point in converting an already compressed track into a higher bit rate - it may seem as if this would give an improved quality, but once information has been lost through compression, there is no recovering it. The sound MAY be improved subjectively through the use of an appropriate EQ setting.
This is not a definitive list : other formats, for example the one used by Real Player, and the ATRAC minidisc codec used by Sony, are not listed : many of the following can be used in iTunes, or are reasonably well-known.
To use one of the available formats, they should be set in the Importing tag in *iTunes Preferences* (Advanced prior to iTunes 8, now in General). Once set, the format is used for importing CDs, but can also be used to convert tracks already in iTunes (using the Advanced menu : +Convert Selection to xxx+ ). It is not used when dropping files onto iTunes, or using Add To Library.
    1. _Lossless formats_
Certain high-quality audio formats are "Lossless". This means that if the track is re-converted into the same format (after editing, for example), it will not degrade no matter how many times that is done.
.AIFF - a format (common in Macs) representing full CD quality. Bit-rates are over 1400 kbps; +1 minute of music is approx 10MB.+
.WAV - more or less the same as .AIFF but a Windows format.
*Apple Lossless* - a 'once-only compression', applied to .AIFF or .WAV tracks to retain quality but reduce file sizes. A little (totally inaudible) information is lost, but also a more efficient 'codec' (compression algorithm) is involved. +1 minute = approx 5MB.+
.FLAC - similar to Apple Lossless, but less proprietary (a more open standard). Not supported by iTunes.
    2. _'Lossy' formats_
These formats are so-called because each time the conversion is done, the track is re-compressed, and more information is lost even if the file size remains the same. Various quality settings can be chosen, from around 320 kbps (high) down to below 128 kbps, though 128 is reckoned to be the lowest acceptable bit rate to listen to music in stereo.
In general, the higher the input quality, the higher the output quality when 'stepping down'. Therefore an .AIFF track converted directly to 128kbps 'lossy' will sound better than a 256kbps track re-compressed to the same 128kbps.
.MP3 - a standard audio compression format that has been around for many years. Common everywhere, and supported by virtually all contemporary music players. The codec has been improved so that modern MP3s sound markedly better than earlier versions. +1 minute @ 128 kbps = approx 1MB.+
.AAC - a superior codec to MP3 (though the quality gap has narrowed), which has been chosen by Apple as the iTunes format of choice. Nowadays, a track at 128 kbps .AAC will sound around the same quality as the same track at 160 kbps MP3. +1 minute @ 128 kbps = approx 1MB.+
.WMA - Windows' own proprietary lossy codec. It seems to have a bright and sparkly sound compared to MP3, but lacks a decent 'bottom end', i.e. the bass tones are somewhat lacking. Not supported by iTunes. (Can be played using VLC).
.OGG - the open standard Ogg Vorbis format, often held to be superior to MP3 but little-used and therefore not supported in many platforms and players, including iTunes.
When considering which format to use, the most important things to remember are
    1. how will these tracks be played back? (on a hi-fi? an iPod? expensive earphones?)
    2. the quality will depend finally on the judgement of the listener (some ears are better at telling small differences in quality than others)
    3. how much space is available to store (and expand) the music library?
As for quality, a good way to decide is to "audition" different formats. Using one CD track known to you, try importing it at several different formats and bit rates (using iTunes Preferences). Then just play them, see which sounds best to you. In this way I came to decide for myself that AAC @ 256kbps was the best for me +(1 minute = approx 2MB).+

The Windows version of iTunes supports importing of WMA files, converting them to one of the other formats. Mac iTunes offers now support of WMA files at all.
Good point - and if I knew more about iTunes on Windows I would amend that and post a different version of the article in their forum.
I accept the point about .WAV files being used also for compressed formats but didn't want to make it too complicated; the most common use for .WAV I believe, is full quality audio.
On the subject of Lossless compressed audio (FLAC and AL), Wikipedia has this :
_*Difficulties in lossless compression of audio data*_
+It is difficult to maintain all the data in an audio stream and achieve substantial compression.+ +First, the vast majority of sound recordings are highly complex, recorded from the real world. As one of the key methods of compression is to find patterns and repetition, more chaotic data such as audio doesn't compress well. In a similar manner, photographs compress less efficiently with lossless methods than simpler computer-generated images do. But interestingly, even computer generated sounds can contain very complicated waveforms that present a challenge to many compression algorithms. This is due to the nature of audio waveforms, which are generally difficult to simplify without a (necessarily lossy) conversion to frequency information, as performed by the human ear.+
+The second reason is that values of audio samples change very quickly, so generic data compression algorithms don't work well for audio, and strings of consecutive bytes don't generally appear very often. However, convolution with the filter [-1 1] (that is, taking the first difference) tends to slightly whiten (decorrelate, make flat) the spectrum, thereby allowing traditional lossless compression at the encoder to do its job; integration at the decoder restores the original signal.+
+Codecs such as FLAC, Shorten and TTA use linear prediction to estimate the spectrum of the signal. At the encoder, the estimator's inverse is used to whiten the signal by removing spectral peaks while the estimator is used to reconstruct the original signal at the decoder.+
This seems to imply that even Lossless codecs make changes, but it IS a very complex subject. If I could still edit the main article I would remove that bit about AL losing information.

  • Video with stereo track and click track for live performance

    Hello,
I have a video that was created in FCP sync'd with a stereo sound track and a click track. I need to play this video live (using projection) with the stereo track routed to the main outs and the click routed to the in-ear monitors for a performer to sync with. I have not done this before and am trying to wrap my brain around it. I'm also hoping to come up with the easiest and most reliable solution. As I understand it, this video will not be able to play back from a burned DVD, but rather will need to play back in Logic with 2 audio tracks (L/R) for the sound track and then 1 track for the click. These 3 tracks can then be routed to their required destinations from a soundcard or mixer.
Does this seem to be the best and most reliable method? I've only burned audio to video (never using a click) in FCP before and have always played back from a DVD. Now I have this live player/syncing component and am not sure of the best way to do it. I have some experience with Logic, but limited.
I really appreciate any suggestions/tips any one might have.
    Thanks.

I've opened the movie (with stereo track) in QT Pro and then added the click - and now the 2 audio files are there, sync'd up.
When you say you opened the movie in QT Pro, I assume you mean the QT Pro version of Quicktime Player 7. So let's say you have the movie open in Quicktime Player 7, and you press ⌘J (Window > Show Movie Properties). And in the window that appears, hopefully you see several items listed, including Sound Track 1 and Sound Track 2. These are your two audio files, that are now part of the movie file. One of those files is your stereo soundtrack, and the other is your click. So let's assume that this is a total of 3 channels of sound (because I understand your click is mono).
Select Sound Track 1, and select the tab Audio Settings. Let's assume this is the stereo soundtrack. In the scrolling area at the bottom right of the window, under the heading Assignment, you should see Left and Right. Let's leave it that way.
Now select Sound Track 2. Under Assignment, there should be just one item listed (that is, there is only one channel in this Sound Track, if the click is mono). Under Assignment, it probably says Mono. Change that to Center.
Save the movie. We're done with Quicktime Player for now. Launch Audio MIDI Setup. It's here:
    Macintosh HD/Applications/Utilities/Audio MIDI Setup
I assume you have an audio interface connected that supports at least 3 channels. In AMS, find the window (or tab, depending on your OS version) for Audio Devices. Select your audio interface. Select the Output tab, and press the button Configure Speakers. In the window that appears, select Multichannel, and change the menu selection from Stereo to 5.1 Surround.
You will probably see that "left front," "right front," and "center" are assigned to outputs 1, 2 and 3, respectively, of your audio interface. If not, make it so, and press the button Apply.
Now when you play your movie, the stereo soundtrack will appear at outputs 1 and 2 of your audio interface, and the click will appear at output 3. Now you can cable your stereo mains to 1/2 and your in-ear monitors to 3.

  • System Overload/Core Audio Error Message when recording/playback

Well ive been experience this problem for a while now but ive read up on it and done some troubleshooting and think i may have found a solution.
Well what happens is ill be recording say one track or 2 tracks in mono or stereo or playing back about 3 or 4 tracks and logic will stop everything and give me an error message which either says system overload or core audio overload or something. Well i figured i was overloading my cpu so what i tried doing was restarting my computer and then only operating logic as the only program. this worked temporarily sometimes but not in the long run. well i did research and came to this.
apparently its too overbearing for my Powerbook processor to record in 24 bit/96 Khz which is kind of a bummer because it was one of my attractions to my i/o box that i could do that. also freezing tracks will help greatly apparently which i have yet to try but hope will work too.
also i recently deleted about half of the stuff on my internal drive and put my 42.41 GB of music onto my external HD so now i have 54.6 GB on my internal HD which holds about 93 GB total. should this help me greatly? or will it only be a minute difference?
well any more solutions/suggestions as to what i can do to better my situation? also am i correct as to why i think i get those error messages.
ps: sorry for the uncapitalization, i got a bit lazy here
    thanks
    -Mike

    Mike,
Bit depth is more important for recording quality than huge sample rates. If you're going to change your settings, I'd stick with 24 bit, but reduce sample rate to 48 kHz.
When you say you've put all your music on the external drive, what exactly do you mean--your Logic files or your mp3/AAC files? Normally you would want to use an external drive to record onto from Logic. That way your internal HD can run the OS and Logic, while the external is free for all the fast recording tasks. (This assumes your external HD is pretty fast, and ideally is firewire.)
Freezing works wonders, too, if you're processing tracks.

  • Will I have less system overload with new mac?

    Hi guys,
    I have a mid-2009 (Duo Core 2.3 ghz. 12 gig ram) 27" iMac.
Lately I very often get system overload. I am still using Logic 9. When I open the CPU meters both Audio cpu meters are maxed out (so in red).
When I test the same project in logic X, it doensn't have the system overload pop up , but the right CPU meter is maxed out, and the left one is in half.
My question is, if I buy a new macbook pro now. i7,  16 gig ram. BUT still use Logic 9. Will I still have those system overloads on the same project?
Or does it really going to make a difference?
    I hope this makes sense
    Regards,
    Jack

I don't think anyone can give you a concrete answer, no one knows how you use Logic or what plugins you're using in your project. Logic works with hundreds of variables so definitive yes or no answers are rarely accurate.
It's my personal opinion that it's more about the user and how he/she knows to use Logic rather than the system it's run on. There are still studios that use old 2.5gHz dual processor G5's that run enormous projects. Logic can quickly take down any Mac computer if used without regard to how plugins and virtual instruments are used.
I take it you're running Mavericks not ML 10.8.5

  • CPU overload with audio

    Standard Configuration (MA356LL/A)
Two 3.0GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon 5300 series processors
    16-Gig 667MHz DDR2 ECC fully buffered DIMM (FB-DIMM) memory
    Hi,
I have serious issues with the performance of my machine purchased for studio use with DAW’s Logic, Cubase, VST instruments and NI Kontackt5 plug-ins.
With only a few instruments the CPU level is off the chart and the audio is completely destroyed, the performance metre in Logic shows only CPU cores 1, 2 and 8 in use with core 8 being totally overloaded.
Steinberg state it is a chipset issue which is a common issue with early Mac Pro models.
I find this hard to accept as I cannot believe Apple would release a product that did not work for use with what is the majority of their customer base and one of their own applications [Logic].
Furthermore I cannot believe the user community would allow this issue to go unresolved with current OS updates release since 2007.
I have tried to install the Kernel updates 1.0 and 1.1 however it appears they are already part of Lion 10.7.4 as when I try to install a dialog state the update is not required.
Is anyone aware of a BIOS update for the Intel chipset, I am led to believe the CPU is 5365 and chipset is 5000X…?
Any information would be greatly appreciated
    Thanks

    Pre-coffee Sunday AM :-(
I was "talking out loud" more than anything. I didn't fully read what you had said until after.. sorry.
Why would it not work? and came to same ideas you had.
I wish people would say "MacPro2,1" instead of model ID numbers. At first I wondered if they upgraded it on their own with 5365 cpu. And then would need the 2,1 firmware on their own.
Apple NEVER issues a EFI or SMC firmware update beyond a certain limited time frame. The MacPro1,1 got those in Aug-Sept 2007 to deal with fans and heat, and supposedly Windows.
The 2009 example is a good one. There was no BIOS fix. There was no patch for 10.5.8. You had to upgrade to 10.6.2+ instead. New models really are not supported by the OS until there has been 3-4 or even 6 months time frame and more than one update, while graphic drivers are even slower and longer to get out.
Old school: 15K scsi drives or even Fibre Channel host controller.
    Is 16GB RAM enough? today?
10.7.4 broke some things that were working in 10.7.3.
New OS is not always the answer, it may be the problem.
2,1 came with poor graphic choices. Users bought 8800GTs only later in mid-2008 after much ado, or 4870s. Even 3870 in summer 2008 to get away from x1900 and 7300GT.
Is the app really able to effectively use 8-cores? it is not a given, it has to be coded and able to be multi-threaded. And 8 'real' cores, not just hyper-threading (a poor way to get more out of a core) is limited to some apps.
And MacPro 2,,1 does lack the PCIe 2.0/2.1 slots and lanes to make best use of some controller cards.
Is the system perhaps waiting on data to feed the cores? not enough disk and memory bandwidth.
Ideal RAM for 16GB ~ 4x4GB for lowest latency and quad-channel, symmetrical memory performance.
Ideal storage: SSDs on 6G controller, or some 8x PCIe - though individial drives rather than necessarily usingn an array.

  • Having problems moving ALL tracks and Arrangements tracks over slightly

    Hi there
I need to be able to move every track I've created AND the Arrangement tracks together say about 10 seconds to the right as I want to put a click track intro that I didnt think to create in the first place. But everything I've tried seems a little messy.
I've tried selecting the first arranngement track, holding down SHIFT and then selecting the last arrangement track and moving them over but that seems to move the tracks to randomly anything between 20 seconds and 3 minutes.
I MUST have the arrangements move with the tracks exactly and I dont want to have to adjust them later.
    Any ideas how its done?
    thanks

This does not work. Moving/multiple whole arrangements really doesnt work well at all.
Someone else might have a better suggestion... or not. This could just be one of those limitations of GB. Moving forward, if you're going to want to be able to easily tweak things like this and many more, you might want to look into Logic.
Not that I'd buy Logic for that SOLE reason, but does anyone know if its actually possible/easier in logic?
Unfortunatley suggesting someone buys logic seems to be the general suggestion to a lot of users on this Garageband forum when they cant get GB to do something they want, but its hardly ever 100% confirmed that Logic can perform the suggested tasks. (By the way I do know that this isnt a Logic forum).
If that's the SOLE reason you'd buy Logic, then it's not worth it. Knowing that you want this intro space at the beginning of your songs, you could just start your next GB song from bar 5 or 9 or wherever. Problem solved (right?).
However, the reason people give the "buy Logic then" answer is because all these walls people hit in GB don't exist in Logic. You can do what you describe in Logic and a whole lot more. The price (outside of the literal price) is that you give up the simplicity of GB.
Beyond this one issue, if you'd be generally interested in a lot more options when you record, and don't mind spending some time learning how to use them, then maybe Logic would be something you'd be interested in.
