System running slow

I have an iPhone 4. My iPhone is running too slow compared with other iPhone 4. So how if i want to stabilize the system or to boost the system without erases any photos or contact?

You can always get more focused help if you can add things like
how much RAM, free space on the disk drive, any recent changes, what program exactly, and whether you have tried using Applejack (handy way to repair the drive and delete unneeded cache files).
Some but not all processes that you control are in /Library/StartupItems but there tend to be programs that don't use that method.
Backup + Erase + Restore (ie, clone the system to another drive). In fact, you might try booting off the newly cloned FW drive and see how it runs.
Spotlight indexing - when it kicks in - can result in sluggish performance, or if the system is looking for files that are fragmented.
I feel like there are 'gremlins' in the system at times, even on MacPro with enough memory, fast boot drive, and well maintained. So you aren't alone.
Make sure you have the firewall enabled, and use Activity Monitor to watch for cpu usage, network activity... though when it was just now acting slow, there was no sign of WHY or WHAT was happening, zilch, no 'feedback' on the cause.
I would be concerned with having broadband and being (ab)used by P2P (peer networking) programs that sometimes try to use PCs as "zombie" unwilling hosts. There are 3rd party software programs to monitor outbound and inbound traffic as well as to close traffic on any services (most outbound traffic is considered "user activity" when that isn't always the case).
From time to time, I think you will find that reinstalling or restoring the system really does help. Even if there aren't any serious directory problems. You might want to rerun the combo 10.4.4 update, or update to 10.4.8. Make sure you have 30-40% free space or off load files to FW. Add more RAM if possible. Or, upgrade to Core 2 Duo.

  • I have a macbook pro 4,1 early 2008 model running on 10.6.8 snow leopard was wondering if upgrading to moutain lion will make my system run slow?

MBP 4,1 running 10.6.8 snowleopard and it runs great but i was wondering if upgrading to moutain lion will make run slower?

Lion is still available but you have to Call Apple to order it and then they send you a Redemtion Code to your Apple ID Email address that you use on the Mac App Store to download it.
But in all honesty even Lion is going to make your system run slower then it now does. Lion, like Mt Lion, uses more system resources then Snow Leopard. I can see the difference on my 2011 MBP with 8GBs of RAM and a fairly fast hard drive. Snow Leopard boots and runs faster then Lion and more so then Mt Lion.
What you need is a New or Newer MBP. If that is not an option then the only thing I can say is give Lion a try. That is AFTER you do a complete Time Machine Backup of your current Snow Leopard install just in case you need to go back.
By the way Apple replaced the Logic board in your system with the same Faulty NVidia chip install in it. Apple Never Updated the NVidia chip used on those logic boards. So odds are sometime in the future, Near or Far, that board will fail again.

  • Macbook pro system running slow - etrecheck shows issues - any idea how to apply fixes?

Hi I normally consider myself pretty web savvy but I'm totally lost on what to do here. This computer has been running slow since I got it, but the harddrive went sideways recently. I've never worked with a recovered drive - which I apparently have as my terminal lists my workfolder-2 so....I'm guessing I'm pretty screwed. I learned about etrecheck through the forums here but don't understand how to apply it
Would anyone help me understand what I need to do?
    Here's my etrecheck:

Adding some RAM would help. Even though you haven't restarted for 4+ days, this is a little high. The 2 places I’ve seen recommended most to buy reliable RAM are below. I have purchased RAM several times from Other World Computing and have always been very satisfied with the product and service. They have on-line instructions on how to replace the RAM. OWC has also tested RAM above what Apple states is the maximum. I now have 6GB installed on a machine supposedly limited to 4 GB.

  • VISTA SYSTEM RUNS SLOW AFTER INSTALLING ITUNES 10.5.3.3

First I could not download Itunes new version 10.5.3.3 by clicking on down load in Itunes. I had to open my browersand go to Apple site and down load. Once down loaded I installed 10.5.3.3, Now it seems my system is running slow and hangs. Not just in Itunes but in other progams also. Any ideas?

With those symptoms, I'd try the following document:

My Mac also very temperamental since installing Yosemite, it sounds like it's constantly working very hard no something, it delays when clicking, typing, switching applications, I'm seeing a lot of twirling umbrellas.  I've also done the Etre Check report and would be grateful for any help.

System generally running slow, delay switching between tasks, pressing on menus etc, the twirling Apple umbrella showing up frequently

  • TS2570 System runs slow after upgrading 2010 macbook to Mavericks. How do i speed it up again? Defrag? if so how.

Downloaded Mavericks to my fast running 2010 Macbook a couple of days ago and since this the whole system is running slow.
How can i speed it up again please?

    Fixing a Mavericks Installation Problem
How to manage a failed OS X Mavericks installation | MacFixIt - CNET Reviews.
    Try these in order:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and
after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears.
Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    4. Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • System running slow/freezing

    THE SHORT VERSION:
My OS was running extremely slowly, and computer making strange noises, much higher frequency than usual (hard drive clicking occasionally too). I reinstalled OS X from my installation DVDs using Archive and Install. The system is running much more reasonably, but sometimes freezes up. Normally when your CPU is busy, you hear a steady stream of little ticking noises, but occasionally, the pattern shifts from a steady stream into triplets of short bursts that are emitted periodically (short-long-short...short-long-short). When this occurs, the system freezes/I get a spinning colour wheel.
Has anybody ever experienced this? Can you shed light on what might be going on. Here are more details if you want to read them:
    THE LONG VERSION
    - I installed Firefox 3...everything was working. I closed my laptop and went to sleep
    - When I woke up the next morning, I noticed it wasn't asleep, and may not have been all night
    - I shut down the computer, and turned it back on.
    - When I logged back into OS X...my system was all messed up. Constant spinning colour wheel, weird noises as described above. System was slow enough as to be unsuable (dock never appeared after login)
    - I managed to put in my Tiger installation DVD 1 and boot up from it and run the disk utility -- NO problems were found with my hard drive.
    - I called AppleCare...they recommended uninstalling Firefox 3...which I somehow managed to do, although it took a really long time -- no improvement.
    - They next recommended an archive and install...so I did it.
    - The system was now usable, but still had problems (the short-long-short issue described at the beginning of the post)
    - I ran an Apple Hardware Test...no trouble found.
    - I called AppleCare--they recommended a technician look at it (ie that I take my computer in for servicing. I haven't yet done so.
-- I have noticed that when I log in using the original Admin account (as opposed to the one I use on a day to day basis), that the system performance is much more free of problems, although even when I am logged in using this seldom-used account, the computer is not totally immune from this peculiar "short-long-short" burst of ticks that seems to accompany a freezing up.

System freezing, especially after an Archive & Install points to a couple of further solutions that you may wish to try.
    1. Perform an Erase & Install. Although the Archive & Install is typically very good about resolving direct damage or issues with the underlying OS, a clean reinstall will all but eliminate a software issue as the problem. If go the route of an erase and install, just make sure that use the machine for a little while to verify the issue is resolved before you go installing 3rd party applications.
    2. It's possible that there's hardware failure, or an early warning indicator of hardware failure. It could be HD-based or MLB-based. Having an Apple technician with the appropriate tools to further triage the issue is more than likely in order. Let them dig through the Console logs, monitor activity monitor during load, etc.

  • Recently installed Mavericks on 09 MacbookPro. System running slow, and applications crashing often (office/safari) Have run Etrecheck. Not very technical so any pointers on what to do next much appreciated!!! Thanks in Advance.

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off merely by the seeming complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can read it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return  three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • After upgrading to 10.5.4, CPU keeps maxing out and system runs slower

    Hi there,
I upgraded to 10.5.4 last week and quite frequently my CPU starts revving up and stays at a high level until I put my iMac to sleep. When I did my weekly reboot last Friday it seemed to not have the problem for a while, but then it came back again pretty quick. By checking Activity Monitor I found out that my resources are maxed out all the time, I've got about 80% CPU attached to Safari right now. Applications seem to load slower, everything runs a bit slower when it's like this.
I found under System Preferences > Energy Saver that I had my Processor Performance set to Highest, so I switched that to Automatic, but I'm still having this problem.
Can anyone help me with this?
    Travis

Thank you, Pondini, that's all I was really asking about in the 3 (4) previous messages. I wanted to know if I could download the combo updater and install it over top of the 10.5.4 version I downloaded through Software Update. Thanks for the confirmation. I did download it this morning after getting your post and have installed it.
Initially, after installation and reboot of the combo update 10.5.4, my CPU maxed out again for a little while, and I checked Activity Monitor and it said a program called "Pattern ?" was hogging the CPU, the ? refers to a second word that I didn't write down at the time, I think it started with the letter M.
I had my iMac turned off for a couple hours after that. When I turned it back on, I was ripping 4 CD's into iTunes and so it sounded like the CPU was running high again through that, but I think that's typical for when I'm ripping a CD. Anyhow, right now the CPU is running normal, about 20% of total cycles used and that Pattern ? whatever program has disappeared from the list. So maybe that was something that the Combo Updater 10.5.4 was using to fix a problem and it might be back to normal again.
So, so far so good, thanks to the people here who have helped. I will post again if the problem persists.
Also, Pondini, thanks for reminding me to check posts in the forum for information. I almost always do that initially, before I post my question. I did that this time, but I had no idea at the time that downloading the combo updater would be the solution as I was scanning the forum for people who had spiking CPU's, not any other type of problem. I suppose in hindsight, after finding that combo updater might be a possible solution to my problem I should have ended this thread and sought new information, posed a new question / post if necessary. But like you say, I would have found other posts about installing combo updater.

  • Late MBP 2010: Does anyone find that startup is slower and system runs slower?

I have a late Macbook Pro 2010 and once I downloaded the new OS X I've noticed that when I turn my MBP on at start up it is a lot slower and I have to wait 30-45 sec for it to get me to the main screen plus I've noticed my programs are running a little slower. Is anyone finding the same problem? Need help...how this is just a bug that can be fixed. Any ideas or fixes?

After upgrading from Snow Leopard, you may find that older, incompatible software may cause the sort of problems you describe.
Back up your documents and everything else important to you, not that there is any reason to believe your hard disk may be failing, but the symptoms you describe may presage an impending disk failure, and you should have backups anyway.
To help determine the possible causes of this behaviour read the following. None of what follows is intended to fix anything, but it will provide the additional information required to advance troubleshooting:
Boot OS X Recovery by holding ⌘ and r (two fingers) while you start your Mac. At the Mac OS X Utilities screen, select Disk Utility. Select your startup volume (usually named "Macintosh HD") and click the Repair Disk button. Describe any errors it reports in red.
When it finishes restart your Mac and test again for operation. If it's still not behaving as you expect it should, please post the results of EtreCheck in accordance with the following instructions:
Apple Support Communities contributor etresoft wrote a very useful app to quickly gather certain system information that may help point to a cause of this problem. Go to his website, download and run EtreCheck:
    http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck
Etrecheck will be in your Downloads folder. Open it from there. You may see the following dialog box:
Click Open - etresoft contributes to this forum frequently and can be considered a trustworthy developer.
It will take a moment to run as it collects its data.
Copy and paste its output in a reply.
Do not be concerned about anything that says "Problem" or “failed” or anything else that may appear in red.
EtreCheck was designed to remove any personal information (such as your computer's name and serial numbers) but if you see anything that looks like an email address or any other personal information that should not be divulged to others, please delete or obscure that information when you post the reply.
When you are finished with EtreCheck, quit the program. It occupies very little space, and you can keep it or drag it to the Trash as you wish.
After completing the above please determine if the problems also occur in "Safe Mode":
Safe Mode or "Safe Boot" is a troubleshooting mode that bypasses all third party system extensions and loads only required system components. Read about it: Starting up in Safe Mode
Starting your Mac in Safe Mode will take longer than usual, graphics will not render smoothly, audio is disabled on some Macs, and some programs (iTunes for example) may not work at all.
Merely starting your Mac in Safe Mode is not intended to resolve the problem, it's to observe its performance without certain additional components.
To end Safe Mode restart your Mac normally. Shutdown will take longer as well.

  • Why is my system running slow and or locking up?

I have an imac all in one desktop, w/version 10.8.2 software updated. I am having issues now while on the internet, the web browser locks up or sits there and spins. It is now locking up my yahoo messenger and other apps I may have open. It has been cleaned w/clean my mac and tune up my mac. Cleaned it all and made it have even more room. I use google chrome as my default. I have had to try safari a few times because this chrome one doesn't support a lot of sites. It is also updated and the safari will cause it to lock up real fast. You can hear it like making noise inside the computer, like its spinning its wheels but not going anywhere. Can someone please help me out here on what to do?
    Thanks.....

  • Clean install of Leopard made my system run slow

I have a MacBook Pro 2.0 Core Duo 2GB RAM (first generation)
Initially, I did an upgrade from Tiger to Leo and there was no slowness. I was asked one of the external audio interface manufacturers that their driver might not work properly if upgraded from Tiger to Leo (without clean install). It needs a clean install so I performed a clean install of Leopard.
Now, my MacBook Pro is slow when I try to run (start) an applications e.g. Logic Pro 8 or when I try to navigate through folders. There is a delay in displaying icons or opening files. There is a huge delay when I try to switch from Arrange windows.
Are there any services or back ground applications that I can turn off? Has anyone else experience similar issue?
    Thanks
    Mitch

thats happening all the time. it is not a one time thing. if there was a run away process it should get killed when a reboot is performed right?
it appears that i have to modify Leo so that only needed services and apps running but not sure which one to kill

When you have kernel panics, the pertinent information is in the panic report.
These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ System Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of reports. A panic report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic". Select the most recent one. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
