T530 Ultrabay HDD performance

Hi,
How fast should a hard drive be in the ultrabay? I feel like it should be much faster than what I'm experiencing.
The following metrics were measured with HD Tune on an otherwise idle computer.
HD Tune: TOSHIBA MK5061GSY Benchmark
Transfer Rate Minimum : 26.2 MB/sec
Transfer Rate Maximum : 98.4 MB/sec
Transfer Rate Average : 74.3 MB/sec
Access Time : 16.7 ms
Burst Rate : 67.9 MB/sec
CPU Usage : -1.0%
Thanks!

the Ultrabay in the ThinkPad T420/s, T520, T430/s, T530, W520 and W530 have SATAIII 6 gbps connection. So it is the same connection speed as the main hdd.

  • Workaround for the problem of ultrabay HDD ejecting when waking from sleep

    After trying every possible "solutions" with no luck for the problem of the second hard drive always ejecting/disconnecting when waking from sleep in my T530, I've decided to create my own workaround.
    This is by no means a definitive solution but a nice workaround that uses little resources on the machine.
    The idea is to simply let a program runs constantly from the second hard drive. That way, when the HDD tries to disconnect, Windows is not allowing it and then it stays allways connected.
    To make it more thansparent I decided to create a Windows service that starts when Windows boot and stops when Windows shutdown.
    This Windows service is very lightweight : it does absolutely nothing and just waits indefinitively.
    The trick is that it just have to be started from the second hard drive.
    Here is a link to the Windows service, 32-bit and 64-bit, with the source code and scripts to install/uninstall.
    Just install it anywhere on the second hard drive (D: in my case).

    Works perfectly for me on my T530 with Windows 7 Pro x64.

    Hmm, I have no problem with Ultrabay ejecting HDD when waking from sleep mode. At first, I went down the same
    route as you did. For the first few days when I received my T530 I kept an .iso file from Ultrabay HDD always mounted.
    But then I disabled all power saving options within Windows and Lenovo Power Manager and it seems to work fine.
    Works both with Windows 8 (64-bit) and Windows XP Professional (32-bit).

  • How to hold the HDD more secure in Ultrabay HDD Adapter

    http://0rz.tw/hCi4T
    One of the things I like most about my ThinkPad is the Ultrabay. The Ultrabay is by default occupied by the optical drive, but the optical drive can be removed and replaced with a hard drive adapter, a battery, or a serial/parallel port adapter. But the question seems alway exist, since ultrabay hdd adapter is fit to more than one models. When I insert the ultrabay adapter in my R400, i found that there is some space between the ultrabay and the computer. This is annoying because you have to worry about the dust. But the most serious problem is, the ultrabay HDD adapter could not hold the HDD securely!! Like the photo i show above, the adapter and the HDD is only connected and hold by the junction!So if you subject the adapter to a lot of movement, the drive connector can easily get damaged. Is there any solution to help?

    Hi, the Ultrabay HDD Adapter is designed for Lenovo's own hard disks that come w a little metal "caddie" mounted around the hard disk with four screws. That's why the adapter is slightly too large. Unfortunately Lenovo doesn't make the caddie available as a spare part for use with non-Lenovo disks. In this thread a US vendor is listed selling the caddies and my positive experience with it.
    Of course the caddies being manufactured in US make them unnecessarily expensive. It would be great if you could find a vendor selling these caddies located in your geography at a more competitive price. Please make sure to post your experiences here if you manage to find one.

  • T410 Ultrabay HDD error after sleep

    T410 core i5. I have an SDD in main gate and HDD in ultrabay. After close and open the lid (it goes to sleep), there will appear a windows error that tolds me "Unable to remove the device...". There is nothing scary, but i doesn't like this windows every time when i open my computer.
    The problem started after installing lenovo programs like lenovo power manager and other that was at support page.

    A year ago I bought an ultrabay adapter (knock-off) off ebay for my T400. Recentrly I sold my T400 and got a T410. So I decided to try that ultrabay adapter on T410. In the begining it was behaving like jfd3220 described " When I power up the machine the Ultrabay drive spins up for a second and the light on the adapter comes on and then the drive turns off. The Ultrabay drive is not found by the BIOS".
    Here is the trick how I made that adapter to work. May be it will help you too.
    As you know in T410 optical drive (DVD) automatically powers off if it is not used for some time. When DVD drive powers off, a new icon appears in My Computer. It says something like "Other  E:    Powered Off".  If you double click that icon, DVD drive powers on again. What I did, I waited till my DVD drive powered off. After that icon came up(which says "Other E:   Powered off" ). I made a shortcut of that icon on my desktop.  Then I took out my DVD drive, put the ultrabay hdd adapter in, doubled clicked on that Power off icon on my desktop and that's it. This shortcut powers on the hdd adapter.  If you restart Windows you'll have to double click on that icon and that's it. Ultrabay HDD will work. At least it works for me. Let me know if that helped. My english is not good but I tried my best. Of course it doesn't help the BIOS to see the hd in the ultrabay. But the trick works in Windows.
    I read on the net that original Lenovo Hard Drive Bay Adapter III, P/N 43N3412 works on T410 without any problem and tricks.

  • T530 Ultrabay CD Drive for HDD

    Hey there,
    I've seen a few topics about this issue before but they seem to remain unresolved aswell.
    I'm trying to replace the stock CD Drive in a T30 with a SilverStone TS09 bay using a 1TB Western Digital HDD (which has been formatted and is working correctly). The T530 doesn't seem to detect it in anyway, even through experimenting via the BIOS and looking through disk management. On turning on the laptop, the light for the bay flashes on but then no further indications, and changing the SATA options in the BIOS caused a boot loop.
    Does it definitely have to be a OEM Bay, as I was unable to find them and was told they aren't being produced anymore, or is there another solution I can try?
    Thanks for any replies,
    Tim.

    Alternatively, you could use a CompactFlash card in an inexpensive PC Card adapter for CompactFlash for file transfers from a modern computer to the PowerBook 1400cs. There are also PC Card adapters for some other flash memory card types. The modern computer may be able to write directly to certain flash memory cards, or an external USB reader could be used.
    If necessary, one can usually reformat a PC-formatted memory card to Mac without a problem. In this case, with System 7.5.3 on the PowerBook 1400cs, make sure that Mac OS Standard (HFS) is used on the memory card. Also, please note that it is not possible to write to Mac OS Standard (HFS) from a modern Mac running Mac OS X 10.6 or later.
    It should be possible to transfer files on a PC-formatted card. Just keep any downloaded Mac application files unaltered as MacBinary (.bin), BinHex (.hqx), or StuffIt (.sit). Do not decode/decompress until on the PowerBook 1400cs.

  • T530 Ultrabay slot unnecessary?

    Hi there
    I just had a look on a t530 in a store here in Germany, and i grabbed myself one of the customer care emplyees to ask a couple of questions. So one of the answers i got confuzzled me. The customer guy was telling me that i would NOT bwe possible to exchange the Ultrabay DVD drive with an Ultrabay adapter which is holding the internat HDD of the T530. In other words: It is Not posible to exchange the HDD with an SDD and to put the HDD into the Ultrabay slot. The reason for that would be, thats what the customer guy said, that is is not written in the specifications of the machine.
    ist that true?
    Hi liebe Community,
    Mfg
    Alex

    Do you know the speed of that mSata thingy? If i understood it correctly those mSata SDDs are quite slow compared to SataIII ones. It seems like the bandwith is cut by half, isnt it?
    My idea was to by a 64GB SSD drive for the operating System, and to use the HDD for programs, as the HDD is still very fast for an HDD. What do you think?
    AFAIK the mSATA interface is only SATA-II (3Mb/s.) I doubt you'd notice much speed diffrerence in practice without a stop-watch or other instrumentation.
    My own preference is to put a large SSD in the standard HDD bay and use the original HDD, either in the Ultrabay adapter or a separate USB enclosure, only as a backup device. SSD prices have come down in recent months. In North America it's now possible to buy 256GB SATA-III devices for as little as $160 (~€130.) With this configuartion I can travel with a "ruggedized" ThinkPad and not have to worry about an accident that destroys my HDD.

  • Mac OS 8 won't boot from HDD - Performa 630

    Hiya again,
    I'm working on a Performa 630 for a friend and trying to reinstall the OS to mac a better system, I've already upgraded the RAM with a 32MB stick to make 36MB and have given it a 20GB HDD. I've tried to install Mac OS 8 to the HDD and can complete the installer, however on reboot the system shows the happy mac icon for a quick second before the screen goes white and restarts and shows the ? floppy icon. I haven't a clue why it's doing this as it's supposed to support OS8 and the specs are adequete and I am formatting it to the Mac OS Standard (HFS) file system so I'm at a loss.
    Any help greatly apprieciated, thanks.
    Edit: Oh, and when booting back into the installer CD, it says it's rebuilding the desktop on the HDD, just if this makes a difference.

    Are you using the retail/universal installer OS 8 disk (white with large "8" across the face of it) or are you using another model Mac's Restore disk?  If it's a Restore disk, that can cause problems because they have a model-specific OS build that doesn't necessarily support other models.  If you used the retail/universal OS 8 installer disk, did you use the included version of Drive Setup 1.3 to format the hard drive?  If you did, that's the first thing that you should correct.  That version of Drive Setup had a bug in it, and many years ago, Apple sent out "Drive Setup 1.3.1" CDs to customers upon request.  You should download Drive Setup 1.6.1 and copy it to a floppy disk.  It is a compressed file, so you'll need Stuffit Expander to expand it.  Once expanded, you'll have a self-mounting image file that you can double-click.  Drag the disk image icon to your floppy disk to copy Drive Setup to it.  When the Performa is booted to the installer CD, insert the floppy disk and run Drive Setup.  Do not choose to format the hard drive, but choose the "Update Disk Driver" option (I think it's listed under the "Functions" drop-down menu at the top of the screen).  After updating the disk driver, try rebooting the Performa from the internal HDD.  If you still have problems, you may need to reinstall the OS 8.  If you do, you should uncheck the "Update Disk Driver" option, so that the newer disk driver isn't replaced with the older version.

  • Portege R200 - HDD performance very poor

    Hello,
    i have a problem with the HDD (Toshiba MK6006GAH 60 GB) performance, because HD Tune Pro reports me:
    Tranfer Rate: Minimum: 1.6 MB/s Maximum: 2.2 MB/s Average: 2.2 MB/s
    Access Time: 20.7 ms Burst Rate: 2.2 MB/s
    I have checked the power options, but the HDD is running all the time.
    An error scan shows everything in green, so no problem on the disk. S.M.A.R.T. shows all counters are ok, the health status is reported overall as ok.
    HD Tune reports UDMA Mode 5 is active.
    Operating system is Windows XP SP3 all patches installed, 1.24 GB of RAM.
    Any idea what is wrong?

    Hi
    Its a 1,8 IDE (Ultra ATA/DMA-100) 60 GB; 4200 rpm with 2MB cache HDD.
    The Ultra DMA/100 (also called Ultra DMA mode 5 or Ultra-ATA100) allows drives to theoretically reach throughputs of 100 Mb/s.
    But this is only a theoretical value!
    However, if you want you can check the HDD using software called HDD Drive Fitness Test.
    You can also buy another HDD in order to test the performance.

  • A1283 Mac Mini second HDD performance poor?

    Hi,
    I'm using a A1283 Mac Mini (the last type before the unibody model) to play audio in a theatre show. I've replaced the internal optical drive with a 500GB 7200RPM SATA drive on which all the audio files are located. I'm hearing audio breakup which suggests that audio is not being provided from disk fast enough, although there are no console errors to suggest problems. At most of there are around 14 stereo audio files (24bit, 44.1k) in use; not a particularly heavy load.
    Is there a difference in performance between the 'upper' (ex-optical drive bay) and 'lower' (factory HDD) drive bays in the Mac Mini? Do I need to make any OS changes to make full performance use of the second HDD?
    Some additional details: 8GB RAM, OS X 10.6.2. The audio app is QLab v2.3.5, and audio is routed through an RME FireFace800 (firmware v2.77) using v2.9.3 driver.
    Many thanks,
    Matt

    Hi dschnepp,
    Thanks for the pointer. I looked at the negotiated link speed on System Profiler. However even allowing for slow interface speeds I'm still confused:
    SATA I rates at 1.5Gbit/s, which is (very) roughly 187MByte/s transfer rate. I'm playing a maximum of 14 audio files which are all stereo 24bit 44.1k. I calculate that to need about 3.7MByte/s transfer, ie a factor of 50 less than SATA I's transfer rate!

  • Extremely slow HDD performance on Acer 7551

    Has anyone else experienced slow performance on their laptop (I wouldn't think this is specific to the Acer but I suppose its possible) where it takes at least 2 seconds or more for the command to seem to be executed? The login prompt is an obvious first example for me (via the command prompt not a DM) where after I enter my username the Password prompt wont appear for about 2-3 seconds and then even after the password being entered the bash prompt wont appear for another 2-3 seconds.  The HDD light is active/blinking during these pauses too so its like its seeking for something on the other end of the drive.
    Its a standard laptop HDD speed (5400 RPM) but I wouldn't think this would make the hiccups occur.  I never noticed this before in other installations such as Fedora and Ubuntu.
    Is it possible that its my partition schema? It is as follows:
    sda1 --> /boot
    sda2 --> /
    sda3 --> /var
    sda5 --> /swap (logical)
    sda6 --> /home (logical)
    sda7 --> /tmp (logical)
    I have also tried the standard recommended:
    sda1 --> /root
    sda2 --> /var
    sda3 --> /swap
    sda5 --> /home (logical)
    and still the issue remains.  Is it really just my HDD?

    t3kka wrote:Reading around on some other threads I found regarding a slow login to tty I noticed some folks state that a large root partition could be the problem.  My HDD is 500GB with the root, var, swap, and home partitions being ~80GB, ~20GB, ~6GB, and then the remainder as in home (respectively).  Maybe having a large root partition along with the location of the home partition makes the HDD head travel a much further distance which is physically equated to a delay in login and other actions.  With such a large HDD, what would you recommend for partition schemes?
    I have a 640 gb 5400rpm drive, and I've installed arch with only a huge root partition on it in the past, and had no speed issues (currently I have a 40gb root and a ~595gb home and a 5 gig swap).
