Taking Physical backup

Hi,
I am using oracle 10g database. using oracle 10g database and .net technology i build an application.my application is working well and huge amount of data is stored in my database.now i am facing the the problem that how to take physical backup of the database in which already two years of data is stored.before i never take any physical backup of this database, i am just taking logical backup of it.

There are three ways of backing up an Oracle database.
1. User-managed backups: These are the traditional "hots" and "colds". In a "hot" backup, you place the tablespaces into backup mode and then copy the data files using cp on *nix operating systems or cntl-c/cntl-v on windows systems. Once the data files are copied, you take the tablespaces out of backup mode. In a "cold" backup, you take the database down completely and then copy the files. When the datafiles are copied, you can bring the database back online.
2. RMAN backups: This is Oracle's recommended backup strategy. The benefit of this type of backup is that RMAN is kernelized or part of the database itself. This means that you no longer need to worry about placing tablespaces into backup mode or bringing down the database. Backing up a database is as easy as the following:
RMAN target /
backup database;
3. The final way you can back up a database is using some type of storage backup such as tape backups of the entire filesystem or mirroring the array offsite.

Why not physical backup be able to restore logical tables ?

DBA's are used to the perspective of physical & logical backups for a long time .
I wonder why should it not be able to do a logical restore a single table from a physical backup ? It will be great to have this possibility.
Is this is design constraint that can be changed by Oracle ?

This is not a design constraint.
The physical backup is of all the physical components of a database which are interpreted by the server software to create the logical representation.
A physical backup is meant to be restored completely whereas a logical backup can be restored as of requirement.
It is not desirable to be able to restore a single table from physical backup as table is a logical representation of data. Till such time that the physical data is not interpreted by Server software it is just bytes on the disk.
So, if we want to restore a table from physical backup we will need a running instance to interpret the data and this will be more time consuming than having it extracted from a logical set.
If our system has not gone down and we want to restore the table just to a previous state, then (Oracle 10g) we can do it easily without taking the help of physical backups, through flashbacks.
These are my views, perhaps others can join in and we can discuss this out.

How to schedule SQL Agent job for XMLA script file of SSAS database instead of taking a backup.

I want to script XMLA file instead of backup of database and also want to schedule a job for the process in SQL Agent.
Is there any pros and cons when I script the XMLA file of the SSAS db instead of taking a backup ?

Hi Amir,
You can take the Create SSAS database XMLA script and run the job to create the cube. The script contains the Metadata definition of the Database and it does not contain the actual data.
Pros: Since you are only creating an empty cube the script will run faster
Cons: You still need to process the created cube to use it for reports.
Fastest option is to take the backup of the cube and restore wherever necessary.
And you can also use TFS source control to deploy the cube and process it later.

The issue is related with a lock while trying to backup the controlfile.
The lock is more likely caused by the autobackup controlfile process started just before RMAN process was also trying the backup controlfile as shown in the following alert.log excerpt.

i have recoverd to another location physical backups of oracle files. i have all data but data in one table patient can not be viewed. however, if i execute count(*) query it retruns total number of rows. can any one help me.
i am using 11g database and i am executing this query from sql*plus
" select * from patients;". messegae received "no data found".

You mean that the table has data in the first database, and you lose the data while copying and recovering the db?

Which job is taking log Backup of specific database using command?

In my SQL Server there are around 200 jobs of different databases for backup.

Its generally a bad design to create different jobs for different databases expecially backup and restore if you create you give specific names to the jobs otherwise it would be difficult for you to track. below query will give you littlt help but if you
are running a proc to backup log files and that proc is situated in master database it wont help. If you are running SSIS package it wont help
The column database name will help you in locating the DB name for which job is running

Some unix can fix the directory entry if you do it before the last process closes the file and you have the appropriate tools and expertise. Google for your OS. Here's one that just happened to be the first that came up for me: http://linuxshellaccount.blogspot.com/2008/08/recovering-deleted-files-by-inode.html
If you can't do that (and it surely isn't something to depend on if it even works), you need to restore the previous one that you do have, all intervening archived logs, and recover. You probably want to export anything that might be in that file if you can, before you do anything else. As soon as Oracle closes it, it will be gone.

IPhone physical backup on different PC

I usually back my iPhone up to my Macbook Pro. That laptop is currently in another state ATM and it might be a couple months before I get to it. I have my windows gaming rig that I want to do 3 things with.
1 - make a physical backup of everything on my 4s
2 - use that backup to transfer everything onto an upgrade (a new 5c)
3 - factory restore my 4s
Can I do this and then when I get my laptop back continue to use it as my main? Thanks!

Hi everyone,
Is it possible to restore an Oracle instance with only theses files:
- The SYSTEM tablespace's datafiles.
- The SYSAUX tablespace's datafiles.
- The CONTROL files.
- The PARAMETER file.
And the data being in many dumpfiles (generated with exp.exe or expdp.exe)?

CarlYes. Please remember that a backup is a physical copy of the data files. An export is a logical copy of the and data and the ddl needed to recreate the data. In essence, the .dmp created by exp is just a bunch of CREATE and INSERT statements, albeit in a binary file. Of course you can't issue these statements (even within the context of imp) if the database itself is not up and running.

Approximate time for Taking Oracle Backup

Can you guys tell me how can I guess
1.what time should be taken for a Oracle database's full export backup ?
2.what time for a full online Physical backup ?
3.what time for a full offline Physical backup ?
We can see the size of the associated datafiles of the database from dba_datafiles. We have only that clue and the database is residing on an AIX box.
Any good idea will be appretiated.
Also please give me the idea on which factors the time for backup depends. And how it can be done in good speed.

I recently joined a new organisation where the database size are huge. But I would have to create some emergency 'Change Requests' on Oracle backups. Discussing with Old DBAs and prior testing in test environments with same volume of data as in production is not possible at this point of time.

and after that incremental backup, will incremental
backup use last full backup automatically provided
that in full backup I check the option to use the full backup
as the base of incremental backup strategy?
When I am using 'Oracle suggested backup strategy' which uses image
copies instead of backup set can not newly set incremental
backups use it as its base instead of newly created full backup?
2.When there is recovery window for say 7 days set and
every day are created incremental backups after full backup and
full backup is just taken, next days from that I need previous

I see default blocking session monitoring, but was looking for something that monitored the length of time locks are held.
Haven't seen anything, and wondering if we'll need a user defined metric for catching this.

what wil be the problem dude....]you can take logical backup using datapump but you want to move the data from oracle 9i to oracle 10g ,you can use exp/imp utility or transport tablespace methos because datapump couldnot support Oracle 9i.
you can take physical backups either consistent or inconsistent backup using RMAN(Recommanded).

Need the rman backup sequence in taking the backup

I just need the sequence in taking the backup of full database through rman.
Current method
1. Datafiles
2. Archivelog files
3. Control file.
But I am noticing missing of some archive log when i am doing the recovery files. So, i just want to change my nightly backup to the below procedure
1. datafiles
2. control files
3. archivelog files.
Correct me, the suitable procedure for scheduling.

Let me explain my question once again..
I didn't get my requirements..
Recently, faced a scenario while recovery my database...
I am having nightly scheduled backup in the below manner...
1. database backup.
2. archive log files backup
3. control file backup.
My archive log files backup completed by 22:10. and my control file backup completed by 22:29. In between there was an archive generated at around 22:15.
i want to restore and recover the database with this backup. Followed the below scenario
1. restored the controlfile
2. restore database
3. recover database
Finally, it is asking for the archive generated at 22:15 and at 22:49.
So, by this i came to know that my database backed up with missing of archives. if i go with the below scenario of taking the backup
1. datafiles
2. control files
3. archive log files
Thinking that the archive log files backup pieces infomation will not be available in the controlfile..
Which one will be the best option in scheduling our backups.
Taking controlfile backup before archivelog or taking archivelog backup and then the controlfile.
