Target Mode Won't Start

I am desperate for help, I just received my new 27 inch, i5, 3.1 GHz computer and am trying to use the Migration Assistant to get virtually my entire hard drive from my old Mac (2GHz Intel Core Duo, OSX 10.6.7) and no matter what I do, Target Mode will not start.  I have tried everything, unplugged all FireWire connections, restart pressing T key and continue to hold it until old computer boots, and it just boots in normal mode.  So, I reluctantly tried to use Migration Assistant via Ethernet cable, and it started, then ran for approximately 4 hrs, was probably 95% done judging by the status bar, and the new computer gave me a message that stated something like "Old Mac Ethernet Connection is not recognized press continue to try again." of course, after pressing continue it kept giving me the same error. I think if I could get target mode to work the Migration Assistant would work via firewire.  I have tried multiple firewires, both old, and a new $40 one, and NOTHING works.   HELP!!!!  I just want to get my files from my old computer without having to wait a zillion hours only to have it fail on me during the last 5 % of the transfer.  Is there another way I can get the files without having to pop open the computer and messing with the hard drive.  I read something about Firmware passwords, but my old Mac does not even have a firmware password utility, it just has something like a "firmware EFI" or something that states my firmware is up to date.  I don't know what the heck to do, if anybody could give some advice that does not require messing around with internal components that would be AWESOME.  Thanks for reading

I found an option that worked that I have not seen on countless forums and even on the Apple topics.  I went to System Preferences, hit on the Hard Drive icon, a screen is brought up that has a "Reboot in Target Mode" option.  It worked like a charm.  I guess there must have been an issue with the keyboard and my booting by holding down the T key.  Oh well, running it now, curious to see if it will freeze like my attempt thru Ethernet last did last night!

  • The dark mod won't start/question about rebuilding an AUR package.

Hi...just migrated from Debian so i would be forced to learn some new things (and to tweak my system to meet my needs:P), and till now everything has worked flawlessly..today i encountered my first opportunity.
Just installed The Dark Mod and it won't start.
    I got this error:
dlopen '/home/case/.doom3/darkmod/gamex86.so' failed: libjpeg.so.62: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory.
Surfed the forums and the solutions were to rebuild the package (wich i still have to learn) or make a symlink (wich was not recomended)...the solutions were appointed in similar cases, with the same error but to other software.
    I'm using libjpeg-turbo 1.1.0-1 and Doom3 runs like a charm...The mod won't...so i'm a litle confused.
The PKGBUILD of the mod does not mention this particular library since the only dependance that is written in the PKGBUILD is Doom 3...
So what i'm asking is how do i build it again to make it work with my libjpeg library?wich file do i have to modify?
Can someone point me in the right direction?
    Thanks.

From AUR: https://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=31788. i intalled it with that PKGBUILD...at first i thought that with a slight modification of it i could make the mod work..but the PKGBUILD does not refer to that particular library.
(...Doom3's engine also comes from the AUR)
Sorry..i mentioned AUR in the title and then forgot to write the mod came from there...
What is bothering me is that Doom3 runs with my lib and TDM won't, it tries to open  libjpeg.so.62 wich is an old library.

  • Firefox hangs on startup in normal mode and safe mode, won't start in reset mode

    using FF 26.0
using windows 7 home premium v 6.1 (latest)
My problems started after loading FF 26.0. If I start FF in regular mode it hangs. Same thing happens when I start in safe mode. I can shut FF down (while it is hung) by clicking the X in the top right corner.
When I start FF in safe mode and choose reset FF, it hangs without FF ever appearing; I have to shut it down using task manager. After shutting down in reset mode, I can start FF in regular mode and everything works fine. However, stopping FF does not shut it down. I have to use task manager to shut it down. Then I am back to square one when trying to start FF, i.e. reset firefox, hangs, task manager shut down, then start FF.
When FF is running, I can open a new FF window. All my addons are up to date. I have reinstalled FF 26.0, three or four times.
I have cleared cache and cookies.
I have scanned for viruses and rootkits etc. with microsoft security essentials and spybot.
I have been a happy user of FF for more than a decade and have never had a problem like this. Any help will be appreciated.
    Thanks!

  • XP Mode won't start. Gives Error Message; The requstd Op cannot b compltd becs the Terminal Connectn is currently busy processing a connect operation.

Hi Bob. I found this thread from quite a while ago. I attempted to delete the .vsv file but it was in use by vpc.exe. Once I killed that process I was able to delete the .vsv file (Almost 600Mb). But when I launch the Virtual Machine after deleting the .vsv,
I still get the error and that .vsv file (same size) is back where it was. Am I doing something wrong? Its almost like it is pulling that file back from somewhere. Thank you in advance for your time.
    John Woelz

    Hello,
deleting the .vsv file is just a temporary fix for a virtual machine that's
stuck in an indeterminate state.  It's basically like pulling the power
    plug on a real PC.
The .vsv gets created again anytime you start XP Mode.
It sounds like your problem may be more that something is blocking the
communications with XP Mode.  Perhaps a firewall or antivirus product.  You
could try disabling those temporarily to see if it makes any difference.
There's also a couple RDP updates that don't play nice with XP Mode, but it
doesn't sounds like that's the exact same problem.  It's KB2592687, and you
can try uninstalling that to see if it helps.

  • IMac won't start in Target Mode

I'd like to retrieve some large files from my older Intel iMac, but it won't start in Target Mode. It ignores the key and starts normally. Any thoughts appreciated.

Zap the PRAM and Reset the SMC, then try getting into TDM. Otherwise, see transfer files for other connection options.

  • I put my macbook into target disk mode and now it won't start up in regular mode

I put my macbook into target disk mode and now it won't start up in OSX. I have used my install disk and repaired the drive. I have held down the option key to choose the system. I have tried to start in safe mode with same result. The apple screen appears, but the gear just keeps turning. I can get it back into target disk mode by connecting it by firewaire to my macbook pro. It will start up in Windows when I choose that system. What can I do to get it to start up with OSX?
    Thanks for your help.

Try this from MacFixIt as well:
In the case of drive directory damage or problems with permissions, the solution is usually to use Apple's Disk Utility to repair the disk. Of course, you won't be able to perform this operation normally (simply launching the Disk Utility application, located in Applications/Utilities, and initiating a disk repair) if your system will not startup. So two options exist:
    * Insert your Mac OS X 10.4.x (Tiger) media (DVD or CD) and restart the computer while holding down the "C" key. Once the computer has booted from the installation disc, select "Utilities" from the menubar and open Disk Utility. Repair the disk, then quit Disk Utility and restart your system.
    * Alternatively, you can repair the disk while booted in single user mode if you do not have access to a retail Mac OS X 10.4.x (Tiger) DVD/CD. To startup in single user mode, hold down the "Command" and "S" keys simultaneously at startup. Once properly booted, type the command fsck at the prompt. Repeat these process until no errors appear.

  • IMac G4 won't boot, go into target mode, or verbose, or single-user.

    Hi, I am completely flummoxed.
Yesterday I had my iMac G4 networked (via FireWire cable) to my MacBook Pro. I was copying about 14 GB of data from the MBP to the G4. The MBP indicated the copy operation was finished, but the G4 went into a spinning beachball, from which I could not escape -- couldn't force-quit, change applications, open terminal, or anything. So I (reluctantly) did a hard power-down.
When I went to restart the G4, I got a grey screen of death -- for about 2 minutes. Then the screen goes black for a second, then goes grey again, this time with the alternating folder-and-question-mark icon. Bad news.
Here is what I have tried so far:
    * Won't boot into target mode -- if I hold down T at startup, the screen stays black (never gets to the grey screen, or to the FireWire icon).
    * Won't boot into single-user or verbose mode -- if I hold down cmd-S or cmd-V, computer stays grey.
    * Won't boot in safe mode -- ditto.
So my next idea was to try booting from a startup disk. But how to open the optical drive tray? (This is a tray-loader, not a slot-loader.) I pulled down the white external door manually, but do not see an emergency open pinhole inside. But there must be one, right?
Does anybody have any other ideas on how I can break into this thing, or what might have gone wrong with it?

I'm not at a G4 iMac right now, but other tray-load drives of that generation had a hole but ti's very low in the opening. Probably need a good light to see it.
Try starting the computer and holding the mouse button down while it's trying to boot. This is a startup shortcut to open the drive but may require that the system start to load, something with which yours is obviously struggling.
Does the iMac have the original Apple keyboard? Some third-party keyboards may not support the startup combos for safe mode, single-user, etc.

  • Won't start up after using as host for target firewire...help?!

I used my iMac G4 1.25ghz flatpanel to install Tiger to my G3 iMac via Firewire Target mode, and now the G4 won't start up/has no power.
Because the G4 wouldn't start up in Target Firewire for some reason, i used the G4 as the host and started up the G3 in Target, restarted the G4 from the DVD, and installed Tiger to the G3 (i am positive i used the correct destination disk, adn the G3 is now showing the Welcome screen so it was sucessful).
Afer installing, the G4 automatically restarted on the Welcome screen- apparently normal in this situation, from what i read- and i turned it off via its power button because i want to do the Welcome stuff from the G3 itself (was that a mistake?). I'm thinking i might have only put it to sleep, tho, before i pulled the Firewire cable.. i didn't hold the button down long.
Afer i pulled the Firewire cable, the G4 wouldn't start up again via the Power button. I pulled the power cable and plugged it in again, but still absolutely nothing- obviously no power. No response to trying to reset PRAM, start it up from an external drive, via firewire, or CD- it's like it's unplugged.
What could have happened? Would pulling the Firewire cable have messed up PMU if it was only asleep, not shut down? Could i have damaged the power cable when i pulled it?
Could having used it to install to another drive in Target mode have screwed it up (i've read of many people doing this without problem).?
Should i try pushing the PMU button, or are there other things i can try first? (i can borrow a power cable from my son's G4 iMac)
I'd sure like to get it booted in some way or other ASAP to make sure i didn't mess up the G4's hard drive somehow...

thanks, i'm going to read and bookmark that for future ref... i had a post not post, tho, that said: tempest in a tea-pot, it was just something with the power supply. As soon as i tried a cord from a friend's a few hours later, it powered up. Oddly enuf, when i then reattached the original power cord, it powered up from that, too.
I wonder if these have some kind of time-delayed automatic reset on the firewire or power supply or pmu, because NOTHING i did worked right after it happened.

  • Imac won't start up n issues in single user mode

Imac won't start up after long time 'frazing' of Firefox. Manual start up ended up in the grey screen forever'processing' icon.
Had a look at other solutions, unable to enter safe mode. Someone mentioned to try single user mode and it went through half way  with error messages on the screen which has no command line available for me to key in any letter.
My Imac has been out of warranty coverage for a while, how do I know if it's hard ware problems before paying for service?
    Any help would be appreciated!
    Alice

Yes, I have backed up and deleted old files using target disk mode with an old macbook.  It's just the larger files I didn't have enough space and disks for.  I really appreciate your help on this as I've never had any mac issues before this so am not really sure what to look for.

  • Have G4 start up in Target Mode all the time?

    Hi again,
I now have OSX 10.3.9 on the Power Mac (see more on that in this thread: (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=668359&tstart=0)
I found out it has 512mb RAM, had OS 9.0.4 on it so I went through several upgrades of software and firmware to get OSX 10.3.9 on it, it is the AGP model, machine ID 406... The discs I have for 10.4 won't install on it so I will have to leave it with 10.3.9 which should be fine.
Is it possible to set it up so that it always starts up in Target Mode? I would like to get rid of the monitor and I have to give the keyboard back to the original owner.
I've looked on Versiontracker and will look more but haven't found an app or script that will start it up in Target Mode without my having to use the keyboard. I see that Tiger allows me to do that (on a one time basis?) but Panther does not. Is there any way to get it to start in Target Mode without my having to use the keyboard and have it reliably stay starting up in that mode?
Once I get rid of the monitor I'm going to have to rely on it doing what I think it is doing.
I suppose I could use ethernet... I may also get an enclosure for it but this is my current inquiry.
    Many thanks.
    John L

After some searching, I seem to have found a way. From this link at Mac Geekery (http://www.macgeekery.com/node/102) I tried it out and it seems to work fine. If I want to return to full computer mode, I zap the PRAM twice.
Is there any downside to doing that? I see that it resets the clock which might be a problem in keeping files properly filed (having to reset the clock - won't be able to use the online timer server, will I?) but I won't be needing to use it in computer mode very often. (Probably never since I won't have a keyboard for it.)
    Anything else I should know?
    Thanks.
    John L
PS I also saw on the Apple E-mail lists, in the Firewire section, that someone (Eric Anderson) had created a utility that would accomplish the same thing. I signed up (with dificulty, they don't make it easy) to that list and then cancelled that since after signing up I still couldn't see the e-mail address of Eric, which I had hoped would be visible once I signed up.

  • IMac in Target Disk mode won't mount on Mac Pro via Firewire

My iMac (intel Core 2 Duo) won't start up - it has the question mark in a folder icon.
I can't find the Apple Snow Leopard disk, so I've started it in Target Disk mode, connected it to my Mac Pro, but it doesn't mount on the Mac Pro even though it appears in System Profiler on the Mac Pro.
    Both running 10.6.8
Can I force it to mount? I have tried front & back firewire ports and restarted several times to no avail.
I'm hoping to repair the iMac disk using Disk Utility or Diskwarrior on the Mac Pro, but need it to mount first.
    Any ideas? Thanks.

I want to copy everything off the iMac before re-installing Snow Leopard & starting again.
I do not have a backup of the computer (I've had a backup hard drive on order for 7 weeks that has been delayed due to the shortages...) I am aware that this is very stupid of me.
The disk is obviously in very bad shape as Disk Utility can't do anything with it.
Diskwarrior v4.2 on a DVD will make a 'Preview' of a directory of it, but will not 'Replace' the directory as the disk is damaged.
    1. Does anyone know how to make a startup DVD of Diskwarrior v4.4 (I have the v4.4 update but can't find out how to make a new startup DVD using the old v4.2 DVD and the software v4.4 update) and I think Alsoft must now be on holiday as they're not answering... (I would like to use v4.4 as it should be more capable).
    2. Assuming I can get Diskwarrior (hopefully on a new v4.4 DVD) to make a 'Preview' again of the iMac directory, how do I copy everying off the computer? My only guess is to connect my Mac Pro in target mode to the iMac. Will the Mac Pro disk show up in the 'Preview' directory & therefore allow me to copy all of it's contents across to the target mode disk?
    3. Assuming all the above works, is there a best way to copy all of the iMac contents to a folder in the Mac Pro? i.e. is there a way of Carbon Copying it so that after wiping the disk I can simply copy it all back? Or is it all too late for that
THANK YOU very much for any help.

  • PMG4 won't boot from DVD or FW Target Mode

I have a 350mhz PMG4 (AGP) that has a DVD/CDRW drive that works fine under 10.4, but won't boot (have tried from prefs panel and by holding C).
Also, it comes up with open firmware and gives an error when I try to start firewire target mode from the prefs panel, and does nothing if I hold up T on start.
    Any help is greatly appreciated!

    Hi, Brian -
This sequence may do a full reset of Open Firmware -
    - Start the computer and immediately hold down Command-Option-O-F
    - When the computer starts it should open into a prompt screen (Open Firmware).
    - Press Return, you will see OK.
    - Type reset-nvram include the dash, here and below.
    - Press Return
    - Type set-defaults
    - Press Return
    - Type reset-all
    - Press Return
The system should restart. If not, try typing exit or shutdown, or you can manually restart the system.
Note - some machines may return "unknown word" in response to the reset-nvram instruction; if that happens, try init-nvram instead.

  • After reboot firefox won't start. runs in task manager, but won't pop up. reset, safe mode and uninstall/re-install won't help. ok if no reboot.

  • Firefox won't start (not even in Safe Mode) on Windows 7 x64

    I am Running Windows 7 x64 and Firefox 3.6.15.
Since the day before yesterday I am unable to start Firefox. Even in Safe Mode it just won't start.
I click the Firefox icon, the mouse cursor changes to indicate the computer is doing something. After 3 seconds or so the mouse cursor again changes back to its default state. Nothing else happens.
The Task Manager in Windows shows me that an instance of firefox.exe is running, but I see no Firefox window.
Then if I again click to open Firefox, another firefox.exe instance starts, but again I see no Firefox window.
There isn't even a warning about one instance of Firefox already running.
    What I have tried:
I have uninstalled Firefox, removed all the Firefox files and folders from c:\users\username\AppData\Local and Roamning. I re-downloaded the 3.6.15 installation package and re-installed.
    No change.

    I have the same problem.
The only Firefox version working is the 64bit nightly build 6.0a1. No 32Bit version of Firefox works!. Chrome, Safari and Internet Explorer all work well.
Another Problem I have in this context is, that the Firefox Installer hangs in the tidy up step - even for the nightly 64Bit version. I have to kill the setup.exe process but the Installation seems to be completed.
Before my change to Win7 64Bit I had OpenText NFS Solo 14 installed on a 32Bit Windows7 and no Problems.
Is there a solution for this problem without uninstalling OpenText NFS Solo 14?
I need the NFS Server at work.
