TC and Fios

After a couple weeks of trying to create a robust network throughout my house, I am about to try a new approach and would greatly appreciate any feedback.
I would like to set up my MI424WR-GEN2 (802.11N) JUST for the purposes of supporting my set top boxes (STB). I would turn off the radio so the N wouldn't create a WIFI network.
I would like to connect a first generation Time Capsule (TC) to a Actiontec ECB2200V (an Ethernet over Coax MoCA Network Adapter) .  In my opinion, the TC has a number of advantages over the Actiontec which I won't elaborate on here.
My goal is to have the TC which has an 802.11N radio provide the wifi for the network along with routing, e.g., IP addressing, DHCP, DNS, etc.
Furthermore, I'd like to add Airport Extremes AEX to the network to extend the TC wifi range. I would like to connect the AEX to the MoCA adapters.
Any thoughts on if this scenario is feasible?
As you can probably tell, I know just enough about networking to totally screw up my network (reset is my favorite word) but not enough to create a robust house-wide network.
Thanks in advance!
JB

I use the ActionTec as the DHCP server. All others get their IPs from the ActionTec.
Unless you are building a complicated network this might be a simpler solution.
There are known issues with the Rev D AT ( even though VZ will not admit them - you can check dslreports.com).
BTW, the AT can only do 100Mbps, while the TC LAN is GigE. AT has a lot more bells/whistles. (DDNS, Parental Control, etc.)

  • Canon PIXMA MX850 fax and FiOS - "No Dial Tone"

I have a new multi-function printer and FiOS Internet, Phone and TV. My old analog phones work just fine and get a dial tone through all the phone jacks, but the fax doesn't recognize the dial tone. I've read about micro-filter and splitting devices for DSL connections; will they help with my problem?
    Hope someone has advice!
    Thanks!

On your vioce phones, do you get a dial tone the exact second you pick up the phone, or is there a delay, like a incoming voicemail msg that needs to be listened to?  I'm willing to bet that your phone system tells you you have unheard voicemail messages by adding a delay before voicemail, and that will affect your fax machine.  Clear your voicemail and try again.

  • I have been a Verizon Wireless and FIOS customer for as long as I can remember

I have been a Verizon Wireless and FIOS customer for as long as I can remember.  The last 2 months has been the worst customer service experience I have ever had.  I own a Samsung Galaxy S4 that I purchased through the Verizon trade-up program. Initially I thought this program was a great idea for folks into technical gadgets to trade-up to the next best phone on the market.  Over the last month I have called customer service numerous times regarding dropped calls, no service, and most recently my Samsung S4 will not send or receive texts within 20minutes, it will not operate effectively with the limited apps I have on the phone and I must reset the phone 5-8 times per day to make a call. I called Verizon Wireless customer service multiple times. The last call revealed an error within the software that is not yet fixable for weeks or maybe months according to the technical advisor.  Like many other customers my phone is the lifeline to my world outside of work and paying a premium for a service is more than affordable as my lifeline.  To date Verizon will not honor a warranty on this phone (which is within warranty) and it took a similar act of congress to get the truth from a willing tech.  This is terrible and beyond disappointment.  I just ordered new service from the **** pile called AT&T and I hope that in the smallest regard I receive better service from them than I have experienced from Verizon in the last 2 months.  I purchased a phone, I expect it to work and if it doesn’t I expect you to honor your promise of service.  You failed.  Want to make it right? Give me a call!

  • New DVR and FiOS remote tablet access

I had to get a replacement DVR recently (bad hard drive). All works well except I can't access the DVR details or program the box through the fios remote app on my tablet. It worked fine for the old box. Also, on the app, the old box still shows up.
I can log onto my account at Verizon. Com and I can program, see what's recorded on the new DVR  etc.., but again the old box shows up as the default DVR and I need to always choose the new one on a drop down box for things to work. Again, this is on the Verizon. Com website through the DVR manager.
How do I get rid of the old box on the app. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the app bit to no avail. Again, the problem is the app, which I would like to get to work with the new DVR.

Ok, I found the problem on the FiOS app. There is a button that can switch which box doors the recording. So I now can see what I'd on the new DVR. But still, not sure how to delete the old box from the list

  • NETGEAR WNDR3700 and FIOS Victory and a cautionary tale of security with a FIOS Router

I added FIOS as our IP in January.  We recieved a good deal for superior speed 25/25 Mbs.
What I learned after testing the Westell 9100 router provided by Verizon was that port 4567 was continutally open.  And that after serveral calls to Verizon techsupport, and yes hours waiting for a live person (Cummulative waiting time) I was met with silence on the question of the open port and given a canned answer that Verizon does not provide support for that issue.      I tested this at norton, grc.com and auditmypc.  All have the same result,  Port 4567 is open.
I found some helpful hints via google search and via this forum.   What I have learned to my dismay is that anyone, who knows our IP address eventhough it is dynamic every few days,  could telnet the port and if they knew our password, or if a user didnot change the default, could enter our setup and network.  This should send shivers down your spine.
Verizon as I understand it, leaves the port open for firmware updates.  And that its impossible to stealth the port given their software.  Also, Verizon has their own DNS that they list as primary and secondary.  This means, that everything you do online passes through their DNS servers and is recorded.  how do you know? ever get that sudden switch to Verizon search after a google search.
I purchased a router  Actually 2, took one back and upgraded to the Netgear WNDR3700.  What a nightmare in trying to figure out why the connection kept dropping.  After hit and miss in configuring 2 settings that are  must. Dynamically assigned DNS.
MTU must be set to 1492 in the router WAN setup
your routers mac address must be set to use computer mac address.  in the Basic settings.
I also registered at OpenDNS and use their DNS servers with no issue.  Im trusting one over the other.
FIOS has changed my IP twice since and my home network runs without a hitch.  I have a HUB set up, PS3. Non fios tv, IP phone  etc etc etc

My Verizon router is not a router. Bridge only. No WAN ports used on my Actiontec. Who needs support? The only reason I would call is if my service stopped working, or slowed down to a problem. I am not most people. My router is a Linux box with a single core CPU, 512meg of RAM, 80 gig drive, and two network cards. Logs everything for 90 days.

  • Recording a DVD with LG DVD Recorder and FIOS Standard Set Top Box

I have FIOS Standard Set Top Box, a Sony TV, and an LG DVD Recorder. I cannot figure out how to record a TV program on my LG DVD Recorder. I have 3 remotes: a FIOS Remote, an LG DVD Recorder Remote and a Sony TV Remote. What remote/s should I use, and in what order?  Thanks.

    1) Connect coax (cable) wire from the wall to the RF input on the back of the STB.
    2) Connect coax (cable) from the cable out (might say "to TV/VCR") on the back to the STB to the cable in on the back of the TV.
    3) Connect composite (red, yellow, white) wires from the back of the STB to the input of the DVD player.
    4) Connect composite (red, yellow, white) wires from the back of the DVD player to the back of the TV.
Let me know if any of those aren't possible based on your equipment. The SD STB (QIP 2500) has very few outputs so there are not a lot of options for a setup like this).
In order to record a program, you will have to do the following:
-Set the STB to whatever channel you want to record and keep it on. You will not be able to change the channel, because the DVD player will be recording whatever the STB outputs (the same feed the TV gets). With FiOS, it is not possible to have a DVD do the tuning for you, because it is an all-digital signal and most DVD players can only tune to analog chs 1-99.
-Set the DVD player channel to "input" or something of the like. This will get your DVD player to show the signal from the STB.
-Set your TV channel to composite input. This will show you whatever the DVD player is getting from the STB.
-If you want to watch normal TV without the DVD player, you can turn your TV to Ch. 3 or 4 and get the feed from the STB without having to turn on your DVD player.

  • My FIOS App for iOS and FIOS Quantum Gateway

I have a new FIOS Quantum Gateway G1100 with a new firmware update including guest Wi-Fi.  When I try to use the My FIOS App on my iPad Air 2 and then access the Router and Wi-Fi information I get an error message unable to retrieve Wi-Fi Details.  When I try to manage the FIOS Quantum Gateway I get an error message IPAddress Missing for VZID.  I'm also unable to access any of the router settings from this app and nothing happens when tap the > symbol.

Make sure you have the latest version of the MyFios app.  It's version 3.9.2.10, which you can find on the "App Settings" menu or in the App Store's update page.  Updates are handled through the App Store.
    Enjoy.

  • Time Capsule and FiOS wireless router

Can I connect the Time Capsule to my FiOS router and then disable the wifi feature on the FiOS router?

Are there any known issues with the TC in general, particularly from the wifi perspective?
TC is much better than it was.. make sure you keep it cool.. place it up from the bench on a couple of pencils.. that stuff about conductive rubber.. ignore it.. rubber in all its forms is an insulator and holds in heat. If it does start running really hot.. it has a fault and you should take it back.. Same with hard disk.. they occasionally go bad.. so backup to it.. fine.. storing files on it.. no don't do it.
Remember it is covered under your computer applecare.. so if you have any computer with extended applecare it will cover TC with certain conditions.. but that gives the TC effectively 3years warranty.. after that.. dispose of it and buy a new one.. the TC is not going to be reliable as the hard disk has been starting and stopping multiple times every day for 3years.. just don't trust them.
Wireless is ok.. I don't think it is particularly good range wise. Although Apple said how much better it was than previous Generations.. I have had all 4 now.. and performance in my experience was line ball between all of them. Apple design their routers to work very well with AEBS or AEx so if you want to extend wireless it is simple.. just it doesn't work with any other brand.. apple now reflecting a rather dark empire tendency.. they used to critize in others.
Clarification question...how do I backup my current files on the Lacie to the TC? Would that simply be connecting the two devices via USB and copying over?
Backing up TM files?? Not a good idea.. TM works differently on local disks and network disks.. and TC is best left to do its own stuff. If you mean moving actual file storage.. don't. The TC is not a file store.. it is a backup target.. TC has no way to back itself up.. and TM cannot backup a network drive .. so you would have to buy 3rd party software anyway.
Also USB on the TC is purely for printer and USB connected disk.. but you cannot directly copy from one to the other.. it would have to copy over network to the computer and then back to the TC.. it will be 2x to 4x faster if you do want to copy files to use Lacie plugged into the computer.. and copy to the TC. At least files are only going one way.

  • Airport Express and Fios Actiontec router compatible?

I have multiple Airport Expresses and an Airport Extreme.  Verion FIOS supplied it own Actiontec router which hooks into their Optical Network Terminal.  Since the Actiontec router took over, I've removed the Airport Extreme and the Airport Expresses work only to receive iTunes music from my computers. The Expresses do not extend the WiFi signal anymore.  The Actontec router is powerful but at the far end of the house, I no longer get a WiFi signal.  Previously with my Extreme and Expresses, I could extend the signal wherever I needed it.
I wonder if I can plug my Extreme into a hardwired LAN terminal from the router and use it to create its own WiFi network in the areas of the house where there is no signal?

I wonder if I can plug my Extreme into a hardwired LAN terminal from the router and use it to create its own WiFi network in the areas of the house where there is no signal?
Yes, this is possible if the AirPort Extreme stays permanently connected using an Ethernet cable.
If you want to create one "big" network, use the same wireless network name and password on the AirPort Extreme that you use on the Actiontec router. Setup the AirPort Extreme to "create a wireless network". The Extreme must be in Bridge Mode to do this.
If you configure the AirPort Extreme with a different wireless network name, then you will need to log on to that network separately each time that you move your computer close to the AirPort Extreme.....then log back on again to the Actiontec when the computer moves back near that router.
If the AirPort Express devices are located where they can receive a good wireless signal from the AirPort Extreme....and you need even more wireless coverage.....,the Expresses could be reconfigured to "extend" the wireless signal from the AirPort Extreme like you were doing before.

  • Running a system restore and FIOS settings

I need to run a system restore on my PC.  I just recently had FIOS installed.  Will running a restore mess up those settings?  If it will screw those up, what do I need to do to get FIOS back up and running?

You don't need any of the FiOS branded software for your internet service to work.  As long as the networking drivers on your computer are working correctly, you will be good.  It might be good to install connection wizard though after you are done restoring windows.

  • Express in Client Mode and Fios Router

I am having Fios internet, TV, and telephone installed in my home this weekend. I want to know if anyone has been able to get their Express to hook up to the Verizon Actiontek wireless router. I want to use the Express to stream music to my stereo--not extend the network. It works great on my current Dlink router, but Verizon is forcing me to use their router. I have read conflicting information about the compatibility of the Actiontek and the Express. Has anyone actually gotten this to work?

I managed to get this to work using WPA. It appears WEP was the problem. Here is how to make it work.
    1) Perform a hard reset on the Express
    2) Use an ethernet cable to connect the Express directly to the Actiontec router.
    3) Use the Express assistant to setup the Express as a wireless router--let the software walk you through it.
    4) After finishing the setup, open the Airport utility program--not the assistant.
    5) Click on the Express airbase and click configure.
    6) Click on the tab that will get you to settings. There is a pulldown option that will allow you to choose to set the Express as a client rather than a router.
    7) Click on the security button and select WPA and enter your key.
    8) Click update and the Express will reset itself
    9) When it is done resetting, disconnect the ethernet cable from the Express.
    10) The light on the Express should eventually turn green and you're good to go.

  • Airport Express and FIOS

Tried to add airport express to an existing network with a FIOS router. This does not seem possible. Does anybody have a solution for this problem?
    Thanks

I tried some additional troubleshooting, the usual suspects like rebooting FiOS router, my Mac and so on and that had no impact. I was still seeing my AX drop from AirPort Utility and iTunes within just a few minutes of restarting although it never dropped off the network and was always reachable at it's IP address.
What has seemed to address the AirPort visibility issue is grabbing the just released software update to 10.5.7 and restarting my Mac. My AX has been visible in the AirPort Utility and iTunes for the entire day now.

  • Verizon Internet Security Suite/ 3 and Fios Inside Wire Maintenance Plans

I just noticed yesterday that I had been charged $6.99 a month for the "FIOS inside Maintenance Plan" and $5.95 a month for the Verizon Internet Security Suite/3 for the past 4 years. After calling customer service to inquire about these plans, I now understand that these plans are optional and automatically added to your bill unless you personally call and have Verizon remove them from your service.
Wanted to share some thoughts and see if people out there feel the same way I do.
I understand the Inside Maintenance Plan but I question the economical value to the customer, especially if it does not know it is paying for the plan.
I do not understand the Internet Security Suite/3. Here I feel it is a total rip off. Nobody has been able to convey what the plan is all about and what value it adds to the customer.
I feel that have been deceived and misled into paying for two plans I did not know I had because nobody presented the optional plans to me when I placed my order. Verizon provides these plans to you for free for 30 days, and if you don't call to cancel, the service continues automatically.
Granted, if you carefully read your bill, as the Customer Service Representative so judiciously told me, you will notice that these plans are added to your bill as separate line items and up to you to question them. I personally think that these practices are unethical, benefit the company, and at the end, it is always the customer that loses. Whether these plans have merit or not, Verizon should be clear and transparent with its customers when they place their orders. The customers must be given all the information they need about these plans so they can make rational decisions on whether they will really benefit from these plans and be given the opportunity to decline these plans when they configure the order of their new service. Furthermore, I really see no value for Verizon to throw these plans in for free for one month as there is no measurable way for the customer to determine whether these plans provide any kind or value to them. Whether deliberate or not, what ends up happening is that hundreds of thousands of customers fail to follow up after one month to cancel the plans and they ended paying for them until they realize just like me that they had been paying for something they did not want at the first place. If Verizon offers the plans for free trial to its customers, the burden should be on Verizon to follow up with the customers to determine if they want to continue the plan or not. That seems to me like a fair compromise.

Verizon Internet Security Suite is nothing more than money down the drain.  It's a throw away.  Get rid of it and use avast.com and malwarebytes.com, free virus programs that can do the job a lot better.  VISS kept saying for the longest time that my computer had no viruses until one day it slowed down to the point where I could no longer get onto the Internet, all because of viruses that VISS never detected!  What Verizon doesn't tell you is that it's the cheapest program on which Verizon can get the lowest bid and don't be fooled just because it's "powered" by McAfee.  I had to pay a computer expert from the phone book 165 bucks to learn this and at least now I am saving money.

  • VIZIO P502ui-B1E and Fios Remote Codes?

I have a VIZIO P502ui-B1E and I''m having trouble getting the Fios remote programmed to work all the functions. I've used all the codes listed in the programming guide, no joy. I finally just used code 922, and cycled through until the TV went off.
The problem is that all of the remote functions don't work. i.e. the "input" button now make the TV mute instead of changing the input. The "mute" button does nothing at all.
Does anyone have the actual code that will enable all functions on the remote for this model TV?
The remote model is  the Philips RC 1445301
    Thanks!!

Not every TV is going to have a code that makes it fully functional.
Only way to do that is to buy a true universal remote (like the Logitech Harmony) that can be programmed as well as updated.

  • Need help. VERY low audio with Tivo series 2 and Fios

I just had Fios installed and want to use my Tivo Series 2 DVR.  However, the audio can barely be heard.  Any advice?
    Here is my setup
    1.  Motorola set top digital box with HDMI output to Television.  Everything is Excellent
    2.  Motorola set top box S video output to Tivo.  Red and white AV to Tivo audio input.
In this setup, my standard def channels have excellent picture, but the volume is just way to low.
I have run the Tivo setup procedures.
When I try running Coax from the set top box to Tivo, I get NOTHING.  No audio or video.
Is the motorola incapable of putting out enough audio via AV when HDMI is also connected?
    Help
    (please)

    Keyboards:
The motorola is connected simultaneously to TV via the HDMI output, and to my TIVO, via S Video and AV outputs.
When the TV source is set to HDMI, all is perfect (in fact, stunning).  Great sound.
When I change the TV to receive S Video from the Tivo, I receive an excellent standard def picture, but audio that I have to crank up to full scale.
I have not tried Motorola to Tivo alone, with no HDMI connection to the TV.
I do think your idea to use a second box (a simple SD digital converter) to hook up to the Tivo makes great sense.  If I split the feed, sending one to the HD settop box, and another to Tivo, then I get the best of both worlds.   I will get HD from the motorola, and can separately record on the Tivo.
I am still a bit concerned about audio volume, although the Tivo boards seem to say that Tivo works well with Fios.

  • MLB Extra Innings and FiOS

If you are a fan of the MLB Extra Innings package, the only place you will find complete satisfaction is with DirecTV.  After several hours of talking and chatting with Verizon reps, the company line is: the package they buy is from "In Demand", just like most other providers.  So, if you subscribe to the package (with FiOS) it is what it is ... pathetic.  Apparently only DirecTV deals directly with MLB.  So if you want 30 channels of games that include "home" and "away" feeds for most games as well as nearly all of them in HD, and be able to see the schedule on both your on-screen guide as well as their web site, then switch to DirecTV.  Me ... I have to wait 23 more months until my agreement expires.

I spent two hours with customer service and technical support.   Customer service also spoke directly with technical support to find out that the package STARTS tomorrow - and does not include spring training games.   Customer service says the contract terms with OnDemand changed since last year - but were unable to articulate the terms to me.
I don't understand how a service provider's customer service and sales folks are unable to explain the precise terms for the services they offer and that it required a technician to explain when the MLB programming airs.
Go here to find the schedule of games (No - verizon did not provide this for me - I had to find it myself)
