TC stuck preparing - confusing log msgs

I've used TC for a couple of years with no problems until two weeks ago. Now, the backup never gets past Preparing, even if I let it go for days. The log file contains many messages that aren't clear to me. I don't know if it's related, but this all started the day after I installed the last OS security patch from Apple (March 25). I'd appreciate any tips. Thank you.

I've had this problem and read about it in discussion groups here... When TC gets interrupted from normal backups, the next time it tries to backup it can go into the "Preparing" mode for several hours. I suggest just let it run all night, and in the morning (hopefully) your back up will be done. After that, all will be back to normal. I think it's going thru some massive reindexing of some kind. Good luck!

  • Stuck preparing to download from itunes

My iPhone 4S is stuck "preparing to download" from iTunes.  I cannot delete the downloads.  I cannot pause the downloads, I cannot restart the downloads.  I have tried a cold reboot, I have tried to log out of my iTunes account, my iCloud account and my iTunes match account.  Nothing stops the phone from continuing to try to download songs from iTunes.
Any suggestions on how to stop it?

i've had 11 songs stuck "preparing to download" on my iPad 2 for a couple of days.
unlike others (in other threads) who removed and re-added songs from their (computer iTunes) libraries, forcing iTunes to redownload the songs on their iOS devices, the 11 songs in question on my iPad were songs that are NOT available in iTunes' own database. they were either (a) my original material or (b) obscure songs i imported from CDs or LPs. that fact seemed to make the issue more difficult for me to correct.
finally, after a few hours of searching and failed attempts, i managed to solve it:
    - in the iTunes app, i went to the Purchased tab.
    - i selected "Not on this iPad."
    - i went to "Recent Purchases" (though i suspect the particular category probably isn't critical).
    - then i downloaded a couple of items that were NOT present on my device.
while the 2nd item was downloading, i suddenly got a pop-up that said "11 items could not be downloaded at this time. Please try again later" (or something like that). and at the same time, that annoying red badge with the numeral 11 disappeared from the Downloads icon.
in short, forcing itunes match to download other material cleared the previously stuck downloads.
i hope this works for someone else.

I have a new mac book pro (sept 2014) and am suddenly stuck on the log-in screen. Keyboard input is not working to enter my password. Seems to be a log in issue as keyboard works for forced troubleshooting. (And b/c when I first noticed the problem, I was able to enter my log in password but then everything sort of froze. Now, no ability to enter the password.) Already tried a basic restart and a cmmnd/ cntrl/ pwr troubleshoot to no effect.

Hi i uppdate my I phone 4 to iso6 via laptop ,during the operation the laptop restart it's self then I connect my iPhone 4 to iTunes again to finish the uppdating but its stuck to Apple log tried to restore it again via iTunes i get the same problem its stuck to Apple logo i tried to restor it from another pc i get the same problem anyone can help please

Hi, did you ever solve this problem?
My 1 year old -- ha! one month out of warranty -- iPhone 4 has been having a nearly identical problem over the past few days.
It started by dying completely so I had the battery replaced, thinking it was simply battery issue.
It then worked again for a moment but started doing exactly what you describe, going through a reset cycle (longer than 30 seconds but who's counting). And it felt quite warm.
Did hard reset, plugged into wall charger and MBP USB but the new battery wouldn't even get a full charge (a whopping 92% after nearly two days). It would even lose battery when plugged in if I opened an app. And all the while plugged in, if I left the phone on, it would cycle through these resets. So I turned it off to try to charge it.
Now suddenly, it's dead again. Totally black, and hard reset does nothing. Up until two days ago there was nothing wrong whatsoever with this phone! And I hadn't even installed a new app that could be the root of the issue. No idea whatsoever what caused this.
Any help would be much appreciated!!

  • How to interpret rmi log msgs when setting -Djava.rmi.server.logCalls=true

i have set this property: -Djava.rmi.server.logCalls=true

can some one pls tell me know to interpret the messages, what does the number 4853 in TCP Connection(4853) mean ? thanks a lot

    Basically it is:
date:subsystem:threadid:[remote object[object-id]:method]The 4853 is part of the thread-id and it is something like an instance number of the thread class.

  • Software stuck in capslock but the key is not stuck, can't log in now due to the caps lock. what should I do?

I was doing homework and the software started lagging, followed by all the font being stuck in caps lock. My keys are find and I could still turn the caps on/off. This had no effect; still caps. I used shift, still the caps stayed on. I restarted it and it pops up with "OS x safeboot" and asks for my password. I type it in accordingly and it's wrong because the caps are still on. I don't know what to do and I have an online test due soon ;( help?

I would first try compressed air to blow anything from under the key.  More knowledgeable people will hopefully chime in, but a problem starting at a level as low as logging in would make me think that the contacts under the keys might be dirty.  Do you have another keyboard that you can plug in?

  • Timemachine stuck preparing in 10.5.2

I had been doing backups using Timemachine just fine before the update to 10.5.2. I had tried to repartition my external drive to limit the amount of space time machine would take up. Trying it on 10.5.1 didn't work, gave an error "no space left on device", even though there's 90 gig free. I then updated to 10.5.2. I get the same error. I tried splitting the free space, this time I got a kernel panic. Argh!
I had to use disk util to repair the external drive. It says everything is ok now.
I've never run Timemachine with 10.5.2. Now when I try, it gets stuck and says "Preparing". Forever. backupd stops doing anything.
    In the console I get
    2/12/08 12:23:05 PM /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[295] Waiting for index to be ready (915 > 0)
I check with spotlight, "mdutil -as". It says indexing it turned off for my external drive, but on for the time machine backup directory. I can't turn it on for the drive overall. When I try to turn it on, it comes back and says its off.
Any ideas whats wrong or how to get around it? I don't know if Timemachine just isn't working in 10.5.2 anymore or if the partition is somehow messed up.
    Ideas?

i used the /.metadataneverindex trick to disable spotlight on my time machine drive.
removed that file, reindexed the drive, time machine picked up and backupd started backing up.
can someone file a bug? i don’t have a rdar account.
(i added the time machine drive to my spotlight privacy preferences so it wouldn’t be indexed. probably not necessary for the fix to work.)

  • Utterly Stuck enabling network log-in

    Hi,
Having real problems setting up a new 1.5.3 server running on a Mac pro.
Basically my network is the Mac Pro, a macbook pro, and time capsule router.
I have created a new account "office" on the server, connected to the Open Directory via Directory Utility on the Mac Book Pro, created an AFP sharepoint and set it to automount, and then set the home folder for office to reside in this sharepoint.
Once the Directory Utility is run, I get an extra login option in login items on the mac book pro, but i cannot log in with supplied username and password. Everything i try get's rejected.
I also cannot log-in from the Server into this account.
Any advice would be appreciated, just spent the last 8 hours trying to resolve this and I am tearing my hair out at the moment!
    thx

    Hi
Which directory node was the account created in? Can you connect to the created home folder using the Go Menu > Connect to Server > Server IP Address from the client?
Generally you get the "Logging into the account failed because an error occurred" message because (a) DNS is poorly configured or confused in some way. You'll see the error message almost immediately if that is the case or (b) It's either an authentication method or user account problem or both. There is a usually a delay before the error message is displayed or (c) Time sync issue. Usually quite a long delay before you see the error message.
On the client side log back in with local Admin account and inspect the system.log as well as the Directory Service.log in Console. It might give a clue as to what is going on?
On the Server inspect the same logs in Server Admin (or Console) to see what is being logged there. In addition you could launch terminal and issue:
    sudo kadmin.local -q list_principals
You should see an entry for [email protected] amongst others.
If its not there then something has 'kiboshed' slapd. Effectively you don't really have an OD Master and its ability to provide auto-mounting networked home folders as well as anything else will be 'hamstrung'.
The above suggestions are for a Server configured in Advanced as I don't do Standard or Workgroup, sorry.

  • Time Capsule stuck preparing

    Hi
My TC keeps preparing (right now for 20 hours), while it's not the first time I let it back stuff up. I don't know what to do because apple says it can take long (the first time!) and I shouldn't interrupt the preparing, but I think 20 hours is a bit long.
    Thanks

Sometimes it decides it isn't happy and has to do a `deep traverse'. Have a look at the Console in the system.log and search for backupd and it will probaly say something.
When it does a deep traverse it can take a long time.

  • Stuck at user log-in page even with the right password.

After pressing the "on" button and it is showing the log in page.
I typed my password. The password is correct.
It runs for awhile, the background of the screen turns from grey to blue with the same design, then back to the log in page again.
    Temporary solution:
Hold on to the "Enter" button after typing the password till it shows your desktop screen.
    Question:
What is the issue that cause to be unable to log in with a simple pressing of the "Enter" button and have to hold on to it?

    Welcome to Apple Communities
If you have Mountain Lion or Lion, press Command and R keys in boot, go to Utilities > Terminal and type:
    resetpassword

  • Stuck Preparing Library

I have been trying to launch the new Photos app with my aperture library but it just says on the 'Preparing Library' screen at 13% complete and not sure what to the issue is?
Initially it didn't find my library as it isn't in the Pictures folder, but another folder in my home directory. I have removed the one it created and re-launched Photos while holding down the Option key and selecting my Aperture library.
I have also restarted and used Disk Utilities to repair my HD and the permissions as apparently there were issues there when I verified disk and verified permissions.
It shouldn't be an iCloud library issue as I am just trying to open it for the first time. Lastly Photos is only using about 0.2% cpu. Library is about 118GB.
The library works fine in Aperture so not sure what else to try to get in to open in Photos... Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance.

I have also restarted and used Disk Utilities to repair my HD and the permissions as apparently there were issues there when I verified disk and verified permissions.
try to repair and rebuild the Aperture library and the permissions of the library before upgrading it to Photos.
Firmly hold down the key combination ⌥⌘, while double clicking your Aperture Library in the "Pictures" folder to launch into the Aperture Library First Aid Tools. Select "Repair Permissions".
See: Aperture 3 User Manual: Repairing and Rebuilding Your Aperture Library
If permissions repair does not fix it, try the other first aid options, but make sure, you have a backup copy of your Aperture Library.
