Television hookup for FCP display

Hi all,
I've been looking to buy either a plama of lcd television so I can view all of my footage in fcp. I've always thought the way to go would be to buy a set with firewire ports so I may view my footage through the 'mirror out to firewire', however, not only is a set with firewire difficult, if not impossible to buy here in Canada (for some reason we are leap years behind and hundreds above in availability and cost), but I'm also wondering if the same feature is possible using the HDMI output for a second monitor (which I'm avoiding since I'll be using 2 monitors as it is). If I'm not mistaken this is a possible way to use 3 'monitors' with FCP on a single system without a breakout box, however, I'm also concerned with which is best and will this set-up allow for proper color correction ect. Please ring in on this. Thanks.
24"iMac, G4dual 1.8   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

That port will probably only display DV if it works at all for this... I'd want to confirm that it does indeed accept FW video signals and what ones it can deal with format wise.
HDV will require the Matrox box, or a Kona 3 card.
Decklink's HDMI card would allow to view externally, but I'd want to talk to them first about what signals it can process. HDV is an odd duck format and as far as I know, has to be converted to uncompressed HD for viewing externally, and no where on the Decklink site does it say it will convert HDV to uncompressed... it just takes the HDMI live signal from a camera, and turns it into something other than HDV.
HD will require a Kona card or Decklink card.
HDV or DVCPROHD will capature via FW, but HDV cannot be monitored externally via FireWire. Odd but true... it's a compressed signal that no monitor views directly I'm afraid. It has to be converted to something that a monitor can understand analog or digital (and the cameras don't accomplish this), and the HDMI card from Decklink assumes you're turning the HDV signal to another format, like uncompressed HD or DVCPROHD I'm pretty sure. Uncompressed HD would require some very beefy disk arrays to deal with it at all.
With that said... there's something else to consider. LCD's aren't showing you video that should be used for critical color correction. They just don't show correct black levels mostly. CRT's are still the standard in this arena. LCD's to date (including the pro LCD's) just aren't accurate enough. Plasmas are probably better, but still don't have as accurate a display as CRT's do.

  • FCP Display Gamma and brightness shiftsng a broadcast

I am well aware of the standard recommendations for using a video monitor for critical evaluation of color and density.
Having said that, however, I have been working on using a well calibrated Sony Trinitron computer monitor, and I have found a way, both with FCP and Color, to get visually fine results output to DVD via Compressor. My solution is to use the Trinitron calibrated with a Spyder 2 to a normal 6500K color temperature, and a gamma of 1.45. This yields very good matches using instrumentation, and visually between a calibrated HD Sony SXBR, Photoshop on the computer monitor, and FCP with monitor gamma of 1.45.
My question is why the monitor gamma needs to be tweaked this much to get good results with FCP. This seems to be the cause of what folks refer to as a "dark" shift when images are displayed by FCP.
I am hoping that some of those folks that have delved into the innards of FCP can enlighten me. I have detailed data as well, if anyone cares.

Not familiar with FCE. Did you try the other advice offered in this thread and go to the Apple Menu > System Preferences and click on the Displays Icon.
When that opens click on the Color Tab.
Verify that your setting is correct for your display.
Also, what are the properties of your source video?

  • Which Mac for FCP budget-minded

I'm really excited to join your group...being a current user of "other" brands of PC and editors and want to switch to FCP.
Heading to the Apple store today so I can start using FCP. Which Mac is recommended for FCP to edit small features, shorts, music vids, et al.
    Choices =
iMAC 24 fully config'd (great screen, but not really portable)
Macbook Pro 17 (portable but smaller screen)...and if so, the 100gb 7200 disk or is the 160gb 5400 disk ok for a boot drive.
    Can't afford a Mac Pro.

If, despite all advice to the contrary, you still go for the MacBook Pro then I'd recommend the base 17” MacBook Pro (MBP) configuration, with 160GB 5400 RPM hard disc option, and an additional 1 GB RAM (to make 3 GB total).
    Why the 17” model?
Because when editing you need as much screen space as possible. Yes, it is bigger and heavier than the 15”, but I think that it’s larger and higher resolution display is worth that sacrifice.
Why the bigger but slower 160GB 5400 RPM hard disc option?
Laptop drives already have a much smaller capacity than their desktop cousins and those little drives, inevitably, fill up quickly with all your stuff!
And of course, you're planning to get an external media drive too, right? If you don’t have one then your internal disc will be eaten up by clip media in no time (especially if you opted for the smaller faster internal disc).
    Why 3 GB RAM?
Well OK, thats an expensive option, but seriously, if you can afford it the money is well spent.
I'd also strongly recommend the extended AppleCare Protection Plan.

  • 720 x 480 preset for FCP?

What preset do I use to work on a movie captured at 720 x 480? When I import into FCP with DV NTSC preset, the aspect ratio is wrong. The movie appears squished into 4:3 format. The movie is for computer display, not TV. I captured the movie from a Google Earth tour, with Snapz Pro, using animation codec, with no audio.

Export works fine. I have a 720x480 movie. So it was just a display problem. No it was a pixel aspect-ratio problem. I must study how that affects my work. I've noticed this type of aspect ratio display problem with several movies on YouTube, for example. Another problem I've now noticed with the Snapz Pro movie is that it captured at 10 fps, which FCP multiplies to 28.78 fps. But that's another topic. Thanks everyone for your instant help!

  • Best screen capture resolution for FCP

I'm making some tutorials of various computer software.
I'm going to edit them with FCP.
    I'm using the MAC built in SHIFT-COMMAND - 3 or 4
in order to snap stills off my screen, and then
import into Final Cut Pro to edit the tutorials with.
The stills, once in the timeline, look pretty fuzzy and
    unuseable.
What have others used in terms of resolution, format and such in order to end up with captures off your screen that you'll bring into FCP that end up looking good if you're
going to end up going to video or DVD?
I also have SNAP PRO X to work with, but I still haven't
found the right format or resolution to get around this problem.
    Any input would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

Without going into DPI (which is really meaningless in FCP land...as has been argued again and again and again...although if you MUST apply a value just stick in 72, but really it has no effect) the pixel dimensions of stills to import for FCP FULL FRAME are 720x534. Because stills have square pixels and FCP uses rectangular ones. If you want to do any movement on the stills, just increase the dimensions PROPORTIONALLY. 2x would be 1440 x 1064.
Oh, and as for the blurry issue:
    #2 Playback is blurry
    Shane's Stock Answer #2:
ONLY JUDGE THE QUALITY OF YOUR MATERIAL ON AN EXTERNAL NTSC MONITOR, OR AT LEAST A TV.
    1. Disable overlays on the canvas
    2. Make sure you've rendered everything (no green bars at the top of the timeline
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=24787
DV footage requires large amounts of data and many computations. In order to maintain frame rate and be viewable at a normal size, only about one-fourth of the DV data is used in displaying the movie to the screen. However, the DV footage is still at full quality, and is best viewed thru a TV or NTSC monitor routed thru your camera or deck.

  • FCP Display Gamma Problem (Everything Dark)

I recently let system update do it's thing and went from 10.6.4 to 10.6.6 including updating pro-apps (FCS 3).
Suddenly FCP, DVDSP, & Motion show all of my video files extremely dark (STP & Color are show them fine).
It's as if the gamma those programs are using to display the image has changed. (Quicktime & other non-Apple apps show it fine).
I've messed with FCS Maintenance Pack, and also used FCS Remover to remove and re-install, but that hasn't fixed the issue.
I'm sure there is a setting, or corrupted file somewhere that's causing video to be displayed wrong, but I'm not sure where to look, what to change at this point.
Any help, thoughts, ideas? Thanks in advance.

  • Preparing Premiere HDV MPEG files for FCP 5

I have three one hour MPEG video clips that were captured in Adobe Premiere Pro CS3 using HDV settings (1440x1080i/60 16:9) that need to move to my colleague's mac. We no longer have the camera or tapes to recapture the footage directly to the mac, thus requiring us to use the HDV footage captured by Premiere.
FCP 5 didn't like the footage when directly imported (not a shock). We checked out Streamclip as a way to demux the files into separated video (M2V) and audio (AIFF), but that doesn't seem to be correct either as FCP wants to render all the footage on the timeline.
Looking for the correct solution without recompressing or altering the footage to the point that the HDV video isn't worth watching anymore. Apple Intermediate Codec seems like a necessary step in FCP, but we don't want to expend the hard drive resources (and compute time) without knowing if the streamclip settings are adequate for FCP's conversion.
    Any help is welcome!
    Spires Video

choose make quicktime movie and select apple intermediate codec move slider to best, size to 1440 x 1080 being that streamclip will see it at display size. set an in and out to do a short section to test. you don't want m2v for FCP. can't remember if FCP5 allows AIC or not

  • Trade iMac G5 for Dual 1.25 MDD PowerMac for FCP??

Hey guys, I've gotten an offer to trade my iMac G5 for a MDD PowerMac G4. I'll show you the specs comparing the 2.
    iMac G5
    1.8 ghz
    17'' Screen
    1 gig of ram
    Tiger
    SuperDrive
    80 Gig Drive
    for
    PowerMac G4 (MDD) (WIND TUNNEL)
    Dual 1.25
    1 gig of ram
    Panther (I think)
    SuperDrive
    100 gig drive
    Geforce4 Graphics Card
Not sure if he will include a display..
Is this a downgrade? I have a problem with the expandability of the iMac, I've grown weary of it. I like the all-in-one design, room for it, but no room to put stuff in it. For FCP, the iMac's been doing a pretty good job, but I want to be able to put extra internal drives in, etc. Either direction I go, I'll end up replacing the computer in a year or 2.

    iMac:
    Bigger screen
    Fast processor
    Newer machine
    Newer, faster SuperDrive
    Self contained
    Better video card
Cons: no way to add a second internal hard drive or second firewire bus
    G4:
    Internal expansion for hard drives
    Can upgrade the video card
Can add a second firewire bus
    Large hard drive
    Can add more RAM
    Cons: older, slower, getting older.
It's your call. It depends on what you intend to do with the iMac or the G4.
Unlike everybody else, for video editing, I prefer an expandable cpu

  • Best Settings for two displays

Final Cut has layout settings for Dual Displays --- I have two displays but prefer to learn Motion first and FCP later --- any recommendations?

I've created and saved ten or more different 2-display layouts. I keep changing them around. Just pull off the tabs and build them the way you want, save the layout. Give yourself a few projects to see how you like it, move 'em around, save the layout to a new name.
I have found placing the 4-port display on the larger display is convenient if it's on the right. Everything else is arranged on the smaller monitor, on the left side of the desk, with the windows I use less in the upper left corner, timeline along the bottom, inspector along the right side, and layers/media in the middle. I use the inspector more often than anything else so it's closer to the viewports.
Warning...when you move Motion's panes around, Motion sometimes loses track of which windows have the focus and you can lose many functions, especially keyboard shortcuts.

  • DVD Footage for FCP Edit - how to tell if NTSC or PAL?!

Hi all, apologies if this seems like a stupid request but I have a job at the moment calling for me to extract footage from a DVD, edit in FCP, add a few bits from Motion etc., but I can't work out if the DVD is NTSC or PAL!
I intend to extract the video (no issues with copyright) via DVDxDVPro but am unsure if the DVD has been encoded in NTSC or PAL. The footage it contains is from both the States (NTSC) and South Africa (PAL) so how do I tell? I don't want to go through a standards conversion if I can help it.
I am keen to try to retain as much quality as possible (client can't provide tape) so also any thougts on the best output from DVDxDVPRo for FCP editing?
    Thanks all,
    Best wishes
    Michael

    Hi Thomas, that's it!
Thanks for this - it clearly shows the TV standard and the resolution plus 4:3 etc., so everything I needed for confirmation.
Glad I cheked because it was in Pal - thought the conversion in DVDxDVPro looked a bit ropey.
This realy baffled me - seemed so simple but couldn't find a way to tell the standard. Learn something everyday...
I am using DVCPro for export from DVDxDVPro - anyone thoughts on a better option?
Thanks again for the answer - and so quick on a Sunday too!
    Kind regards
    Michael

I have redemption codes for FCP from my university - how many machines can I install on?

Do you have these codes because this will be your app? Or is this a "loan" from the school to install on your machine? Do you use your own Apple ID to redeem the code and install the app?
If it is your app, then you may install it on as many Macs as you own or have in your control.

  • Please help me configure a new 8core for FCP

PLEASE HELP A PC GUY MOVE OVER...
I need to configure a new 8-core for FCP mainly. I need to keep the expense reasonable so dont want to spend extra $$$ if i dont have to.
I edit files from many different camera's these days. Mostly weddings & demos.
I want to go with an 8 core either Two 2.26GHz, OR 2.66GHz? Is the 2.2 fast enough with FCP?
How much ram do i need?
Do I need to stripe 2 sata drives together for the video?
    Which video card?
Can you recommend any other software/hardware that will help me?

    Either will work fine.

As much as you want but 8G will be adequate. More might not help significantly.
    sarecco wrote:

Depends on the video you're trying to use or if you want to do 9 camera multiclips. Maybe.
    sarecco wrote:

The stock 4870 is the gold standard for Motion; the current rev of FCP does not care much about the GPU but we are hoping future revs will use the card directly.

  • Photoshop Resolution for Retina Display

    Hi,
I am a iPhone/iPad UI designer. I have a question that I wanted to solve for a long time. I have created a graphics for native apps,i.e. 300x180 px with 72 ppi resolutions. Also created the same graphics 300x180 px dimension with 326ppi. For retina display will the both images be treated same? Is there will be any blurryness when zoom?
I mean to say when I suppose to send the assets of the apps to developers 326ppi resulution is necessary? or 72ppi will create same effects with the same pixel dimension?
    Please find the attachments.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Registering for Caller Display. Do I need to?

    Quick history:
Mod on this forum arranges new deal for me for combined Infinity/Call package.
I agree to new deal on condition that I get everything on my account as it was.
New contract starts (Broadband/Calls/Line Rental) on 10th of September 2013.
My Call Package includes BT Privacy, etc. at no extra cost. See pic below...
A few days later news breaks that BT intend to start charging for the same calling features.
I write to the Mod asking if I will have to start paying the fee for these services. He doesn't reply. Eventually I get a reply (obviously automated) telling me the info is on the website, and links to same.
I write back asking for a proper reply to my question; this time I get a reply from 'Yunus', but it doesn't answer the question, (he only confirms that line rental will go up 6.4%), so I try other means.
I use the price increase checker linked to on the other thread here; it tells me the Infinity/Calls Package will go up, but there is no mention of any changes to my Calling Features prices.
I try Live Chat; holy sh!t, these people are useless! Are they paid to just tell you want to hear?
    First guy tells me 'no increase' in any of my prices';
second guy says line rental going up, Infinity going up, but caller features package will not go up as they were included free in the package I signed up for with the Mod here
third, it's a girl; she says everything will go up, and if I choose to leave I need to pay a full year's charges for cancelling.
Plainly, they are not all correct.
All I want to know is, what is going up? When? Do I have to sign up/pre-register for this free year's Caller Display thing? Won't that mean my contracts for BB/Calls, and Line Rental will have different end dates?
I have read the big long thread about the rises, so do not require a repeat of the answers given there as most of them contradict each other anyway, just like Live Chat.
It would be helpful to get a reply from a Mod (preferably the one who signed me up to this new contract in the first place) and not from any of the BT 'groupies'.
    Thanks.
Incidentally, I've not had any letter or e-mail informing me of the price rises at all.

    Been there, done that!
Also spoke to Live Chat - pretty useless!
    My questions were:
    What else will go up?
Will I start being charged for caller display, etc. when they are clearly included free as part of the package I agreed to sign up for with your colleague?
Do I have to sign up/pre-register to get it for free when BT do start charging?
Will this mean my Line Rental and BB/Calls contracts will have different end dates?
I only want a straight answer to my questions; Customer Service have so far given me 5 different answers.

  • Is there a good motion tracking plug-in for FCP-X?

The question is in the headline:  Is there a good motion tracking plug-in for FCP-X?
You know, like when I want to blur out, say, a license plate number on a moving car.
I know of no plug-ins for FCP-X that will do this.  Surely there's one out there.
And since you can't just export a sequence to Motion (like you could in FCP 7), how would one achieve this in FCP-X?
