[TEMP-WORKAROUND] 290 NVIdia/3.2 kernel tests I've done

It's not fixed as it is a kernel issue. Link to article in post #5.
But there is a workaround in the meantime to at least get you back up and running.
I have an up to date Arch x86_64 machine. And an NVidia GTX-560TI. Like others, today's updates broke "X" fatally, when both the new 3.2 kernel came down with the new NVidia driver family (290).
I've done some tests that may help folks smarter than me figure out what is going wrong.
Test:
a)  Removed nvidia, nvidia-utils, and all related NVidia packages. Handled the libgl dep issue.
b)  Killed the xorg.conf file, removed the nvidia module from memory, and installed the xf86-video-vesa package.
A subsequent call to startx had the DE come right up (just in a lower resolution than a native driver @ 1920x1200).
c)  Went to the NVidia site and downloaded the 285.05.09 drivers and installed the same from a true cli (I personally don't use GDM's). Allowed the NVidia drivers to create it's own xorg.conf. Dealt with the libgl issue. I know this is not Arch orthodoxy, but remember I'm trying to restore my main work system to operational status until the nvidia driver/packages/whatever get sorted out..
d)  Used the nvidia-xconfig to create a new xorg.conf, modprobe'd the new nvidia module, then tried startx. (It's how I choose to start my DE's)
Same issue as with the 290.10 driver. The error of "screen found but no valid configuration found..." that's well documented elsewhere in the forums.
While I am a veteran Arch user, and with other distro's have built hundreds of custom kernels (and a few for Arch), that does not make me a dev. In my humble experience, this test limited the variables down to one. Now the only difference was the kernel rev of 3.2.
At issue is:
a)  Is the nvidia module needing to do something different with the way it interacts with the new 3.2 kernel, meaning that NVIdia itself is doing something that the 3.2 kernel doesn't appreciate?
or
b)  Does the kernel need an adjusted .config file before being rebuilt?
I am not smart enough to know the answer.
Right now, I've of course removed all traces of nvidia, installed libgl, and am using the vesa driver so I could at least access my DE of choice and operate (somewhat). I cannot work until the NVidia things gets sorted out as I use video editing software that requires the use if the cuda toolset.
I post this test only as a source of information that hopefully may point the dev(s) in perhaps more directions than just nvidia. In the end, it may be totally NVidia's issue (like the last time)....But when I plug in the old working drivers in, and still cannot get "X" to function.....Then I start thinking about kernel configuration/compatibility issues.
If anyone wants me to do some other tests I haven't thought of...I'm totally game for it, anything to be of help.....Just let me know what you want done and I'll do it and post the results.
Sincerely and respectfully,
Dave

For Jack450,
I'll be happy to work with you through this....
I need: What flavor of Arch x32 or x64?
How current?
If you are using the lts kernel, then you need to use the nvidia-lts package with it or no love between the kernel and nvidia module.
a)  Ensure you do not have anything but the lts's api's, headers, and kernel installed. If you're missing a piece, I'd recommend installing it. If you've still got 3.2.1 stuff in your system, get rid of it.
b)  Kill your '/etc/X11/xorg.conf' file. (hint : sudo)
c)  Remove your existing nvidia kernel mod from memory
sudo modprobe -r nvidia
d)  pacman in the nvidia-lts stuff.
e)  Modprobe in the new module
sudo modprobe nvidia (check my spelling, I don't know if the lts nvidia modules goes by 'nvidia' or 'nvidia-lts')
f)  From a cli do:
sudo nvidia-xconfig
g) startx, or reboot, whichever you prefer........
h)  And see if that doesn't give you back your GDM/DE.
And no this is not the only way to do things.....There may be easier ways, but being an old retired engineer...I do tend to be a bit retentive.....Others may have different suggestions just as worthy and perhaps easier. All I know is that, if your system was sitting on my desk, this is what I would do for starters.
Dave
PS: if this doesn't do it, as this is a laptop....then I need more info on your hardware. Please do an
lspci -v > HardwareInfo.txt
and PM me with that file, to conserve forum space and I'll then come up with a round two attempt if round one for some wierd reason doesn't solve your problem.
It was first x64 and I switched to x32 to see if it made any difference but it still kills the Xorg so I gave up. I tried LTS, different nvidia drivers plus nvidia-lts drives, intel_iommu=off didn't work. So I'm guessing I'm just out of luck and have to wait for an update.

    You could try to install the nouveau driver until nvidia comes with a new version of the 173 branch that supports xorg-server 1.10, see: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Nouveau for information. As lower-grade options, you might also consider xf86-video-nv and xf86-video-vesa.
    Should i uninstall nvidia driver, then install it?
    I think thats the easy way yes, else you have to blacklist the nvidia kernel module.. check the wiki link of nouveau for details.

  • Nvidia drivers causing Kernel Panics

    Here's a thread about users of Modo experiencing kernel panics:
    http://forums.luxology.com/discussion/topic.aspx?id=4137&show
    Users with nvidia cards report kernel panics after updating to 10.4.3. I'm using 10.4.5 and still getting them. Crash report states:
    Kernel loadable modules in backtrace (with dependencies):
    com.apple.GeForce(4.1.8)@0x61099000
    Apple has to address this. It's frustrating having the nvidia drivers tied to OS updates. Sounds great, but now I can't reinstall the old driver.

    I sent a report here:
    http://www.apple.com/macosx/feedback/
    Is this the right place?

  • 2014 Macbook Pro Nvidia 750m GPU Kernel Panics

    Hello everyone,
    After a long battle w a Mac Pro and Davinci Resolve, I moved to a 2014 15.4 Macbook Pro Retina i7 2.7ghz with Nvidia 750m and Intel Iris (dual gfx). Any time I do anything strenuous, such as video editing or color correction, the laptop heats up to between 80 and 100c, the case becomes almost too hot to touch and it eventually kernel panics with the following, along always a GPU based panic. I just performed a PRAM reset w Apple Tech support, but that isnt helping the heat \ kernel panic issue. It occurs after mere minutes in Adobe Premiere Pro, Davinci Resolve, or anything else GPU accelerated. I already confirmed that auto switching was enabled, but I also disabled it to try without success.
    Any suggestions? This laptop is 14 days old, so I now need to deal w repairs :/ Does this kernel panic indicate a GPU or GPU VRAM issue? I tested my system RAM with Rember and it passed, also passed Apple's basic HW test.
    Huge thanks!

  • Nvidia problem after kernel update

    I moved from 2.6.15 to 2.6.16 with ABS and now my nvidia isn't working.
    When I run pacman -S nvidia, I see:
    INSTALLATION FAILED
    => You have to shutdown X-server to finish installation! You have to rerun pacman -s nvidia
    And I am sure that I've shutdown my X, I even removed /tmp/.X0-lock
    Can anyone help me

    :? I don't understand, I have my kernel sources at /usr/src/linux-2.6.16-ARCH and I have /lib/modules/linux-2.6.16-ARCH but the ABS is /var/abs/testing/kernels/kernel26/pkg/lib/modules/2.6.16-ARCH
    The logfile talks about /opt/nvidia but I dont have that

  • Is it possible to compile NVIDIA for multiple kernels simultaneously?

    Hi all,
    First, the reference is http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/NVI … tom_kernel, as well as a small discussion I started at http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=20410.
    Basically, currently the nvidia-beta (and I'm sure the rest of the nvidia scripts) use `uname -r` to obtain the current kernel name, which is then used for the rest of the PKGBUILD. Its relatively trivial to alter that to the name of whichever kernel, meaning there's no problem compiling nvidia.ko for kernel26-ice from within kernel26 itself, and to alter the name of the package so that your nvidia-beta package does not need to be over-written (you then have two nvidia.ko, each for their own kernel.
    My question is, is it possible for a single PKGBUILD to compile nvidia.ko for all kernels currently installed (probably through looking at either /lib/modules or /usr/src)? This would mean only one maintainer is needed for nvidia-beta or nvidia-17xx or whichever series, and the same PKGBUILD could be used on any system, even those with multiple kernels.
    I'm not very familiar with the limitations of PKGBUILDs, or the rules governing what they may or may not do (for example, accessing and checking the machine itself outside the fakeroot?), so this may be nonsense, if so feel free to point it out. Another idea would be for a simple bash script to create as many PKGBUILDs as required, based on the most recent nvidia-beta PKGBUILD, simply sed-replacing uname -r with the appropriate kernel names and modifying the PKG name.

    Hi,
    it's not difficult to do but I DO NOT recommend to do it (see my notes below the code).
    PKGBUILD
    pkgname=nvidia-beta
    pkgver=185.18.04
    pkgrel=1
    pkgdesc="NVIDIA beta drivers for kernel26."
    arch=('i686' 'x86_64')
    [ "$CARCH" = "i686" ] && ARCH=x86 && NV=0
    [ "$CARCH" = "x86_64" ] && ARCH=x86_64 && NV=0
    provides=(nvidia=${pkgver})
    url="http://www.nvidia.com/"
    depends=(kernel26 nvidia-utils-beta)
    conflicts=('nvidia-96xx' 'nvidia-71xx' 'nvidia-legacy')
    license=('custom')
    install=('nvidia.install')
    source=(ftp://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-$ARCH/${pkgver}/NVIDIA-Linux-$ARCH-${pkgver}-pkg${NV}.run)
    md5sums=('95b67e6f17cc54d36ae2743df76c9f6d')
    [ "$CARCH" = "x86_64" ] && md5sums=('33967a6d452c562bb8af02b0734ebf22')
    build()
    # Read list of installed kernels
    KERNELS=`ls -1 /lib/modules`
    # Extract the nvidia drivers
    cd $startdir/src/
    sh NVIDIA-Linux-${ARCH}-${pkgver}-pkg${NV}.run --extract-only
    cd NVIDIA-Linux-${ARCH}-${pkgver}-pkg${NV}
    cd usr/src/nv
    ln -s Makefile.kbuild Makefile
    # Now build modules for each kernel
    for KERNEL in $KERNELS; do
    echo "Building for ${KERNEL}"
    # Compile the module
    make SYSSRC=/lib/modules/${KERNEL}/build module || return 1
    # Install kernel module
    mkdir -p $startdir/pkg/lib/modules/${KERNEL}/kernel/drivers/video/
    install -m644 nvidia.ko $startdir/pkg/lib/modules/${KERNEL}/kernel/drivers/video/ || return 1
    # Clean
    make clean || return 1
    done;
    nvidia.install
    # arg 1: the new package version
    post_install() {
    KERNELS=`ls -1 /lib/modules`
    for KERNEL in $KERNELS; do
    depmod -v $KERNEL > /dev/null 2>&1
    done;
    # arg 1: the new package version
    # arg 2: the old package version
    post_upgrade() {
    post_install $1
    rmmod nvidia || echo 'In order to use the new nvidia module, exit Xserver and unload it manually.'
    # arg 1: the old package version
    post_remove() {
    KERNELS=`ls -1 /lib/modules`
    for KERNEL in $KERNELS; do
    depmod -v $KERNEL > /dev/null 2>&1
    done;
    op=$1
    shift
    $op $*
    PS: I haven't test it because I don't use multiple kernels
    But be aware of possible problems. Some modifications may influence kernel functionalities, so once you compile a driver for kernel26-xyz on kernel26-zyx the module may not work on kernel26-xyz or may cause unexpected issues.
    You also should not (you possibly even won't be able to) build module for different release version (eg. build for 2.6.28 on 2.6.29) due changes in kernel headers.
    I'm also not sure if it is safe to generate module dependencies for another kernel then you are currently running.
    As you can see above, it is not problem to make such a PKGBUILD, but it also brings too many problems and it's too dangerous that it is better to stay at current model "module package for each kernel". So if you want to you may try to use this PKGBUILD, but I strictly warn everyone else that it may cause more harm then use so don't blame me if something goes wrong. You were warned .

  • Nvidia 173 and kernel 2.6.28 compile failure & nvidia 180 crashes

    **please if this the wrong place to post this tell me or transfer so i can know**
    Hey , im having troubles with my Nvidia driver for long time now i hope you can help me solve it out so theres the deal :
    my computer is : NVidia Geforce 9600 GT , intel E8400 core duo , rest aint important i think
    I used ubuntu with this computer on drivers 173 and 177 (nvidia) and its worked just fine. someday ubuntu upgrades it to the 180 series and from then X never started. so i used my Windows XP some where the 180 drivers wasnt so well functional and crashed pretty much alot. then i downloaded opensuse 11 where i hoped my problems will be solved but instead all i got is :
    [images]
    http://img18.imageshack.us/img18/9379/dsaf.png
    http://img516.imageshack.us/img516/9462/dsaa.png
    [images]
    **this problem occur randomly after X amount of time**
    **when this happen on gnome in arch its or im realy lucky to hit the "alt + F2" and execute "metacity --replace" in time so i will have approx 40 seconds before its happen again to save all my things and restart X , if im not lucky X freeze and computer freeze and i must hard reset**
    i moved from opensuse because its was very slow boot time and because of the graphic drivers in this stage i got myself Arch x86_64 CD , followed the wiki configured network and xorg and everything also installed the "nvidia" package via packman its worked for some time (1 day ?) and then very same problem of opensuse occur . so i tried every driver after the 180.22 , EVERY of them up to the latest beta 185 . ALL of them result the same thing , (expect 185 which there the GPU wont produce red singals).
    for the record : my opensuse was x86_64 , my ubuntu was x86 , and with arch i used x86_64 first and now im using x86. same problem occur in both x86 and x86_64
    i wrote all this to give you a better idea of my problem so maybe anyone will have a soulation. and maybe someone else will find it usefull will help anyone in the future.
    all i want to do is to downgrage back to 173 drivers where i know its worked with ubuntu without any problems at all but i cant theres the actual problem :
    when trying to install from the package itsself (sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-173.14.12-pkg0.run ) i get this :
    ERROR: If you are using a Linux 2.4 kernel, please make sure
    you either have configured kernel sources matching your
    kernel or the correct set of kernel headers installed
    on your system.
    If you are using a Linux 2.6 kernel, please make sure
    you have configured kernel sources matching your kernel
    installed on your system. If you specified a separate
    output directory using either the "KBUILD_OUTPUT" or
    the "O" KBUILD parameter, make sure to specify this
    directory with the SYSOUT environment variable or with
    the equivalent nvidia-installer command line option.
    Depending on where and how the kernel sources (or the
    kernel headers) were installed, you may need to specify
    their location with the SYSSRC environment variable or
    the equivalent nvidia-installer command line option.
    so i went and tried to use the package build i fetch the PKGBUILD and nvidia.install files from here :
    http://repos.archlinux.org/viewvc.cgi/n … iew=markup
    http://repos.archlinux.org/viewvc.cgi/n … iew=markup
    and then i changed the kernel requirement (my kernel : 2.6.28-ARCH)
    so both of my files looks like this :
    PKGBUILD :

    after a little search on google i understood that my kernel sources are missing (using the -e (expert) on nvidia installer let you set location but its no success on normal /lib/modules/2.6.28-ARCH/build)
    so how can i solve this and compile & install the 173 drivers on my i686 , arch , 2.6.28 ?
    thanks in advance for reading.

    After posting this message to the IRC channel , i was told that i can install the nvidia-173xx drivers , its seems to work but i can assure the problem would not occur again so ill just have to watch out, if you have any other fix for this please post.

  • The temp of my Nvidia g105m when using firefox too high

    i have a seriusly problem with firefox. The temp of my grafic card (nvidia geforce g105m), it very high (about 95C) event when firefox load new website, i only see this problem when using firefox, i not coming when i use anyother brower! i think i discover newproblem firefox and i must tell you to fix this problem!

    Check for updated Nvidia drivers for that video card.

  • Can't load nvidia module after kernel and nvidia update

    After latest kernel (3.6.36.2) and nvidia (260.19.29) upgrade xorg doesn't work. I investigated a little, and that's what I found:
    # modprobe nvidia
    FATAL: Error inserting nvidia (/lib/modules/2.6.36-ARCH/kernel/drivers/video/nvidia.ko): No such device
    I blacklisted nouveau module:
    # cat /etc/rc.conf | grep nouveau

    but it didn't help.

  • [solved] Nvidia with custom kernel

    Hello,
    I just compiled a new custom kernel and the custom kernel headers and then went on to create a custom nvidia kernel module. Somehow that doesn't seem to work. Nvidia is complaining that there is something Xen-ish in my kernel:
    Creating directory NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-260.19.36-no-compat32
    Verifying archive integrity... OK
    Uncompressing NVIDIA Accelerated Graphics Driver for Linux-x86_64 260.19.36.....................................................................................................................
    The kernel you are installing for is a Xen kernel!
    The NVIDIA driver does not currently work on Xen kernels. If
    you are using a stock distribution kernel, please install
    a variant of this kernel without Xen support; if this is a
    custom kernel, please install a standard Linux kernel. Then
    try installing the NVIDIA kernel module again.
    *** Failed Xen sanity check. Bailing out! ***
    make[1]: *** [build-sanity-checks] Error 1
    make: *** [module] Error 2
    Aborting...
    As far as I know there is no xen or other vm stuff in the kernel. To verify this I tried to make a new nvidia package for the standard kernel. Again the same error.
    Also this makes me wonder how the PKGBUILD works since it the build function just runs:
    make SYSSRC=/path/to/current/kernelmodules/build module
    and there are no xen sanity checks in that script, that happens in nvidia-installer - which isn't called from the PKGBUILD....
    Secondly, when doing a "make module" from the nvidia/kernel dir with the standard kernel there is a difference between the abs package and the extra package. Anyone a clue what is going on in the PKGBUILD and why the difference between the two kernel modules?
    Thanks.

    sh ${_pkg}.run --extract-only
    Note the '--extract-only'

    Different cflags? Different compiler version?
    Ulf wrote:and why nvidia thinks there is a kernel with Xen (it seems that it is some sort of common bug, not specific to arch but nvidia-ish).
    Quite likely false detection. The installer sees something activated in the kernel and thinks it's xen related. Or something.

  • NVIDIA Quadro K2000M Stress Test Warning

    Anyone with the NVIDIA Quadro K2000M card:  Has anyone received a stress test warning after running a hardware scan?
    I am currently connected to only two monitors (through the dock). And during the scan, I only had a couple of browsers open. I was not streaming or watching videos;  simply reading a couple of articles  (nothing "stressfull" taking place).
    This is the first time this has come up; I will be checking settings and running the test later.
    I couldn't find anything on the result code I received:  WVC00V000-WJSWSM
    Just thought I would check if anyone else had received the same result (stress test warning if not same code) and  what the final outcome was.

    Similar result on a T530 with i7, 8GB, and NVidia 5400: installed new version of Lenovo Solutions (prompted by Lenovo when I opened my existing version), ran full hardware check, everything passed except stress test on video card, which gave warning with result code WVC00V000-UJ8XWD.  Am also running in a dock (Mini Series 3+, not the USB 3.0 version) with a single external monitor attached to a DVI port.
    Interestingly, the log section for the NVidia 5400 says "Displays: 4", as if it thinks that I have 4 displays attached (whereas the log section for Intel 4000 video card says "Displays: 1").  Since the dock could output three displays (two outputs that can be either DisplayPort or DVI, plus one VGA) and the laptop screen is active, perhaps the program is assuming that it's actually running four screens.
    The fan exhaust put out some serious heat during that part of the test.  A couple of programs were open but not in use during the hardware test.  I had not run the hardware test under the previous version of Lenovo Solutions, so I don't know whether it would have shown the same thing, or whether it's new to the new version of Lenovo Solutions.
    Would appreciate any insights the community has to offer.
    Thanks.

  • Lightroom 5 Spot Removal Tool Lags and is not usable (Temp Workaround?)

    Lightroom 5 Spot Removal Tool Lags and is not usable.  The Spot Removal Tool really is pretty essential to the usability and workflow of Lightroom 5.  Checking the other tools alongside the Spot Removal Tool, it appears that the Red Eye Correction Tool is also affected.  Might it have something to do with the Process Version?  I noticed when working with some older image files (using the 2010 Process Version), the Spot Removal Tool worked as previously experienced. Current images that have been "upgraded" to the New Process Version (2012) are now incapable of utilizing the Spot Removal Tool due to its very laggy and sporadic response.  I've never experienced an issue like this with Lightroom (LR user since LR2).  Mac OSX 10.7.5, 3.4GHz i7, 8GB 1333MHz DDR3
    I've also noticed that reprocessing an image can revert the Spot Removal Tool to "useful" again (reverting from 2012 to 2010, then back to 2012).  Doesn't always work and doesn't always "stick", as closing and reopenling LR usually reinitiates the laggy Spot Removal Tool.
    I haven't seen anyone mention the Process Version as a potential culprit, nor have I seen any reliable workarounds.  Reprocessing an image (or set of images) at least works for me for a while, though it would sure be nice to not have continue reprocessing images every time I open/use Lightroom 5.
    LR5 is great and is all I need for the majority of my images.  Unfortunately for me, though, that usability also necessitates the Spot Removal Tool's unhindered functionality.

    For some reason, it's clear that not everyone is experiencing such a massive slowdown / bottleneck when it comes to the Spot Removal Tool.  If all users experienced this issue to this degree, they would have been clamoring for Adobe to address and rectify it immediately.
    With all due respect, Sean, to make a suggestion like that proves you do not experience / have not experienced this issue / don't understand the severity to which this issue can affect workflow; simply "turning off noise reduction and lens correction" is definitely not a fix.  If 16GB of RAM doesn't fix the issue, do you really think simply turning off noise reduction will?  And as Bert Nase points out, to do that to large volumes of images increases workflow in a program designed to streamline workflow for large volumes of images.
    1- One option is to change the process version in your first photo (2003/2010), then copy-paste that develop setting to the rest of your images.  This will get all of your images to the point in your workflow where you can use the Spot Removal Tool on each image.  Once spot removal is done, reconvert each image back to the current process version (2012) then re-accomplish the spots that reconverting lost.
    2- Configuring presets is one work-around option, though you will need at least couple of them tailored to your workflow.
    3- Changing your import settings to an earlier Process Version is an option, then accomplishing Spot Removal on each photo, then updating the Process Version on one and copy/paste to the rest, then re-accomplishing for each photo the spots lost in the conversion and continuing your workflow from there.
    Readers of this thread can use the link above, but it can introduce its own issues, too.  As noted, switching back-and-forth between Process Versions can delete some of your already-corrected spots and you'll have to re-correct them.  Worse, a window prompt asking to create a virtual copy or proof will occasionally begin popping up.. closing the window, clicking "cancel", or choosing any other option in that pop-up window won't be "remembered" and the window pops back up with any further "click" on the image.  Lightroom has to be shut down and the computer restarted for the issue to reset.
    Yes, it's very frustrating and time consuming to say the least.  So, unfortunately there is no fix, still only work-arounds.  Hopefully this issue will be addressed and remedied in either the coming release of 5.2 (doubtful) or the Cloud version of Photoshop + Lightroom.

  • Temp Workaround for Bug CSCun19415 - SPA 504G Transfer stopped by incoming calls

    We have found that if you turn the CW Setting (User, Supplementary Services, CW Setting) to "No", then this provides a workaround for this issue. Obviously, there is a loss of functionality of the Call Waiting feature on all lines since this is a macro setting for the phone. However, until a bug fix for this issue (it is NOT an enhancement) comes out this does provide a good workaround. This also provides a workaround for the discussion on this support forum labeled "SPA 504G Transfer stopped by incoming calls".
    Bob Conner

    At least in our case this is not a valid workaround, for we need our operator (only one person) to know how many calls are waiting.
    I agree completely: it is a bug, and not an enhancement. The second incoming call interrupts and aborts the transfer process associated to the previous call. It is amazing that so many firmware upgrades has been released since this behaviour was detected, and it is still here unresolved.
    My only workaround is using an old Linksys SPA942 (which works as expected) or another brand's model.
    My need: A multi-line SIP terminal for an operator to distribute the calls. And, as bizarre as it may sound, this cannot be addressed with CISCO (at least with 50x series).

  • IOS 5 workaround?? Neebie needs help testing a theory

    Hello, please excuse my ignorance in advance, but I need help with the installation of iOS 5. I know coutless users have been having issues downloading iOS 5 since it's release however I'm glad to say that the download wasn't an issue with me. My problem is that the back up process was taking an insanely long time. So I saw a tweet this evening that suggested doing a restore on my iPhone 4 back to factory settings and then restoring it from a back up. Well I figured this could possibly work since I just backed up my phone a few days ago. When I did the restore back to factory settings iOS 5 was installed however my question is when I restore using the backup that I did a few days ago (which I am doing now) will my phone be rolled back to the iOS that I had installed previously or will iOS 5 remain?
    Thanks,
    Lee
