Temperature measurement usb 6008 with Thermocouple

Hi,
I am trying to measure temperature with type k thermocouple on USB 6008. I set max for measuring voltage, and got 0 voltage with noise. It would be appreciated if you can help me to wire up properly.
Cheers,

Hi,
You are doing the right thing by acquiring your thermocouple data as a voltage. From there, you can convert it to temperature data after the acquisition.
There are two configurations that you can use to connect your thermocouple to the USB device: Differential and Reference Single Ended (RSE). If you use differential, then you would connect one wire to the + channel and the other wire to the - channel. For example, to use AI 0, you would make connections to AI0 (+) and AI4 (-). If you use RSE mode, then you would connect one wire to an analog input channel and the other wire to ground. So for AI0, you would connect the + to AI0 and the - to ground.
More information about these connections is available in the USB 6008/6009 User Guide. Also, here are two links about the different types of configurations you can use as well as thermocouple polarity:

  • Can I use USB 6008 with LabVIEW 6.1 RT?

    Hi there,
I've been using LabVIEW 6.1 RT for my applications and so far I haven't felt the need to upgrade.
However, I decided to try the USB 6008 and I'm learning the hard way that this device will only work with NI-DAQmx and apparently not with the latest NI-DAQ 7.4.2 (legacy)  In fact, I can't see the device in MAX 4.1
Is there any way I can use the USB 6008 with my 6.1 RT version of LabVIEW ?  or should I send the thing back to NI ?
I will appreciate your guidance on this issue.
    Thanks a lot,
    at

    Hi at -
Allisso is right.  There is no way to use the USB-6008 with LV 6.1, because neither of its drivers (DAQmx and DAQmxBase) support that version of LV.  You'll have to either upgrade to a current version of LV or work with another device.  I recommend contacting your sales rep at NI for help.

  • K-Thermocouple, temperature range, usb 6008...

    Hi,
I seem to have a problem with the temperature range with my USB 6008 board. When I connect a calibrator to it (to simulate a K-thermocouple), I can only measure temperatures between 0 and 100°C. What I would need to measure are temperatures around 500°C...
Do you know how I could overcome this problem ?
I understand the USB 6008 it is not the best board for thermocouple measuring, especially with a K type one, but it is the only one I've got...
    Thanks a lot !

The voltage is 5V, and the thermocouple is already grounded.
Enclosed is the VI I created. Now regarding the measurements, the values between 0 and 100°C are not correct, but I believe a "formula task" in the VI will take care of that. In fact, I have a range of approximately 7.5°C (ie 0°C on the
calibrator give me 0°C on LabView, and 100°C on the calibrator give me
7.5°C on LabView). When I reach 100°C, the values hit a ceiling and stay constant, whatever higher temperature I set with the calibrator.
Concerning the CJC, I basically use the default value (25). I tried changing it, but the consequences were minimal.
Is there a potentiometer on the board that could change this faulty range ? I didn't dare open the box yet...
    Cheers,
    K

  • Reading an encoder with a USB 6008

    Hello DAQmx users,
I have a USB 6008 and it doesn't work the way I want it to.  I have done no troubleshooting or research and I refuse to give you any more information.  You have 30 seconds to answer my question.   i kid, i kid...
So here is my real question:
I have a USB 6008 that we use to do simple analog output.  I'm looking for a way to use the USB 6008 to also get encoder information.  I know that the USB 6008 cannot read an encoder directly, but I was wondering if anyone knew of or had any ideas of external hardware that could be used inbetween the 6008 and the encoder.  I think it would be something like 1) the encoder generates pulses 2) external hardware takes encoder pulses, translates them into a digital value representing the angle and outputs this digital value 3) use the digital lines on the 6008 to read in the digital angle value from the external hardware 4) I don't lose my job.
I realize that this isn't an easy, optimal, or preferred solution, but I want to look into it before being forced to replace the USB 6008 with another piece of hardware.

  • I have LabView Student Edition, how can I make work a USB 6008?

The Student edition it doesnot have many Vi's that there are necesary to work with a USB 6008, I would like to know how can I make work the Usb 6008 with LabView Student Edition

    Hello Jorge,
When you say "NI-DAQmx configuration" do you mean the NI-DAQmx Base Configuration Utility?  Are you using NI-DAQmx or NI-DAQmx Base to communicate with the 6008?
NI-DAQmx 7.5 added support for the USB-6008.  Therefore, you can use either NI-DAQmx or NI-DAQmx Base to control this device.  Make sure that you are setting the USB-6008 to NI-DAQmx before trying to use the NI-DAQmx VIs in LabVIEW.  To do this, Open Measurement and Automation Explorer (MAX) and select Tools >> NI-DAQmx Configuration >> NI-DAQmx USB Driver Selector.  Your USB-6008 should appear in this window, indicating which driver your device is configured for.  Make sure it is set to NI-DAQmx before trying to use the NI-DAQmx VIs.
When your 6008 is set to NI-DAQmx, you cannot use NI-DAQmx Base or any of the DAQmx Base examples.  Likewise, when the 6008 is set to NI-DAQmx Base, you cannot use any NI-DAQmx VIs.
If you would like to use NI-DAQmx with your USB-6008, please set the driver by following the steps above and verify that "USB-6008" is listed under "Devices and Interfaces >> NI-DAQmx Devices" in MAX.
I hope this helps.  Please let me know if you continue having trouble with your USB-6008.
    Regards,
    Sean C.

  • Questions about USB-6008

I need a simple (low cost) USB DAQ
so I was thinking to get the model
    NI-6008.
Can I use VB6 to program it?
NI provides (on the bundled CD), dll,
    library, samples on how to
    program it (with VB6)?
    Thanks in advance,
    Frank

The USB-6008 is supported by both DAQmx and DAQmx Base, so you can
definately use a USB-6008 with Visual Basic 6 through the DAQmx
API.  Information on how to get started can be found at this link:
    http://digital.ni.com/public.nsf/websearch/B22FE2B0F9C8935286256E920073DA07?OpenDocument
While the DAQmx driver is the preferred API under Windows, you may also
use the DAQmx Base driver with VB 6 if you prefer.  It is slightly
more work to set up however.  Instructions on how to do that can
be found at the following link:

  • DC motor closed loop control through labview using usb 6008

    Hello
i am doing a project in which i want to control the speed of a DC motor (PID control) through labVIEW 2010. I am having a DC motor, a drive unit that regulates the voltage to the motor by getting analog voltage from 0 to 3.3V ( it can be used for both directions) and i also have a NI usb 6008 board. The problem is that i can't feed the usb 6008 with the digital signal from my hall effect speed sensor. Is it posible with this setup to control the motor?? I can also try to use the pulse as analog input and trasform the frequency into rpm's. Then i am thinking of generating an analog signal to feed the motor drive. If you have any further suggestion of a probably better hardware setup would be more than helpfull to me.
    Sincerely
    Jason Chaloulos

    Hello Michael
Thanks for the reply. I came across those topics before and all of them are trying to generate a PWM signal as output i want to use just an analog signal output so timing on the output is not that important i guess. i am struggling on getting the frequency from the digital input signal that my hall effect sensor generates. Since the maximum speed of the motor is 3000 rpm and with my tooth wheel the maximum  output frequency of the sensor will be 300Hz which i see its way less than the limitation of my ni board. Is there any tutorial documentation that might help me with this one ? Thank you in advance.
    Kind regards
    Jason

  • Amplifying Type K Thermocouple for high temp reading with USB 6008

I am attempting to amplify a type K thermocouple so that the signal can be read somewhat accurately by a USB-6008. I have looked at the AD595 chip but it states a maximum useful temperature of 100 C and I am going to need to be reading up to 700 C.
Is there another amplifier chip that would work up to this temperature, or should I resign myself to using the signal unamplified and getting a very inaccurate (~30 C/division) reading for temperature?

  • Can NI myDAQ ai0 and ai1 be connected directly with thermocouples to measure temperature???

    Hi,
I am trying to use myDAQ to realize both temperature measurement and digital output.
By reading this page I have learned that how I can create a task for temperature measurement using thermocouple with a certain NI device.
    http://www.ni.com/white-paper/14338/en/
What I found to be really interesting is that when I create a task for myDAQ temperature measurement using a thermocouple when my NI myDAQ is connected with my PC, two AI ports ai0 and ai1 both appears in the create task window!!
I never found any information from NI myDAQ manual that "AI0 and AI1" can be connected directly with a thermocouple to measure temperature without using additional conditioning system. But this window suggests that myDAQ can be used in this way, is it?
I am still trying to do it this way, and I'll post some results here again.
I would be really appreciate if anyone could confirm or disprove my guess. Thank  you.

    Hi Rocket 154,
    You’ve already had some
great responses, but I just wanted to add a little bit. A great starting point
to writing good code would be the Getting Started with NI-DAQmx: Main Page,
as well as the shipping examples (In LabVIEW, Help » Find Examples) already
    mentioned.
    If you navigate a bit
through the links (Basic Programming with NI-DAQmx » Getting Started with NI-DAQmx
Programming in LabVIEW) you’ll end up with some great resources. I recommend Learn
10 Functions in NI-DAQmx and Handle 80% of your Data Acquisition Applications.
It will detail many of the functions you can use and give you a feel for proper
    code style in LabVIEW.
    I hope that helps.

  • Laser operation with a USB 6008 DAQ

I'm wondering how I go about using the USB 6008 DAQ in conjuction with labView to turn on and off ths laser:
    http://www.maplin.co.uk/p/1mw-3v-red-laser-module-le07h
The laser must be turned on using 3V which isn't possible with this DAQ. I was thinking of usinga BC 109 transistor, then have the laser connected to an external power supply which is supplying 3V to the laser. then have the laser connected to the collector of the transistor.
I set this up and it didn't exactly work out as the laser was drawing to high a current and not working correctly.
    Can anyone help me?

OK. The problem is that you need to supply about 30 mA to the laser to get it to work. The digital outputs of the USB-9008 are limited to 8.5 mA or less. Furthermore, a laser diode is a current operated device. If you apply a fixed voltage the current will vary depending on the exact doping used when the device was manufactured and on it instantaneous temperature. The curretn rises exponentially with voltage as in any diode. The link you posted does not have any real data about the electrical characteristics of that diode.
Typically a current regulating circuit is used to drive laser diodes.  The simplest circuit is a resistor in series with the diode connected to a power supply with a voltage higher than 3 V. The value of the resistor depends on the power supply voltage, the voltage drop across thes witching transistor, and how much current you want to run through the diode. If you have applied 12 V to that laser from a source which can provide substantial current (>50 mA), you have probably destroyed it.

  • Has anyone any experience with a USB-6008 and reading a thermistor value

    Labview 8.0 connected to a USB-6008
I am using 'BC Components' NTC Thermistor. I used the express VI to create a Vex input and entered the A,B,& C values from the datasheet. The thermistor is the 10K version and I placed a 10K resistor in series with it. I wired it as is shown in the connection diagram, and applied 2.5 volts to it.
I get completly the wrong temperature readings out of it! I called the NI help line in the UK and the engineer confirmed that I had done everything correctly but couldn't understand why it didn't work.
    Any thoughts?

  • Erratic Temperature measurements with FP-TC-120

I have two FP-TC-120 modules on a furnace system. When the temperature
reaches a certain level (930°C) my readings become very erratic. I have
shielded all of the tc's and everything else that is connected to the
FP bank to eliminate EMI noise. The interesting thing is that when I
hook another temperature reader in Parallel with the Fieldpoint module,
my readings are normal on both the new reader and Fieldpoint. Without
the parallel reader, the readings will jump all over and abort my
crystal growth runs due to a false high temp alarm. The problem affects
one or more tc's at a time, and is not specific to only one of them.
One time Tc #2 may fail, then next time may be #4. There is no rhyme or
reason. I have been chasing this problem for three weeks to no avail.
Please advise what could be causing this. I have several FP-TC-120
modules on other furnaces that operate with no problems. This is the
first time I have had trouble.

I apologize for the delay. I haven't been working on this system today.
I'm not sure if it is an Omega unit or some other unit, but it is
powered by the computer's USB port. I also have the same effect with
the old mux board that the fieldpoint is replacing. If the Mux board is
attached in parallel with the Fieldpoint, the readings are fine. I
should note that the mux board is not even hooked up to anything other
than the TC's (meaning nothing at all, no power, no PC, just sitting
there with only TC's on it). The C or COM terminals on the Fieldpoint
are not hooked to the power supply common. The erratic readings are
intermittent, and when the power to the heaters is off, the problem
goes away. Meaning, if I heat the oven up manually to 1000°C, and turn
off the heaters, the TC's will read fine. It is only when I am trying
to control the heat that the problem arises. This definitley points to
noise, but as I said, I taken great measures to eliminate the noise. My
next step tomorrow is to ground every thing that can can be grounded
and even replace all TC's with shielded versions (currently I have a
home-made shield set-up with standard TC's). If these do not work, I
may have to look into purchasing, or developing a low pass filter to
    eliminate the noise.
Thanks for your help. If you think of anything else, let me know. I
will post the solution when I find it so you know and others may
    benefit.
