Terminal Behavior

I'm not sure this is the right place to ask this question, but trust someone will direct me to the proper forum if not.  I have a terminal program called MacWise that I use to connect to a remote Unix machine.  I'm getting strange keyboard behavior, when I log in and type the password.  I see the Edit tab flash and that messes up what I'm typing, I can backspace deleting what I've typed and reenter which usually works.  When I'm logged into the remote machine, sometimes lower case characters are changed to uppercase.
I thought perhaps it was just the application, but today I tried to ping a site using Apple's terminal program and when I typed ping it automatically changed the p to uppercase.
Does anyone have any idea what is going on here?

Gordon, it looks like its been a while since you made this post.  Not sure how valid it is now...   I am particularly interested in the LigatureLevel.NONE value.  It seems that it is no longer supported.
How do I turn of ligatures in the font rendering?
My flex project involves trying to match the font rendering of Apache's Batik rendering of SVG and ligatures have been turned off in that codebase.  Is there any way (even roundabout) to turn ligatures off in flash?
    Thanks,
    Om

  • Odd terminal behavior

I use the Homebrew preference in terminal.
If I click the red button in the terminal to close it, it is still running since the dock icon has the dot under it. However, unlike other apps whose windows I close using the red button, when I click the terminal icon in the dock it starts a new instance of the terminal in the default mode rather than reopening the previous window. If I was using tabs, I lose all those instances of the terminal.
Is there a way to do this other than simply minimizing the terminal rather than closing the window?

I'm confused by this statement - no application that I'm aware of will 'reopen the previous window' when re-activated. If you've closed a window it's gone. Kaput. Why would you expect it to?
You are correct. I never noticed it. However, in the mail app, clicking the red dot closes the window, but when I click the dock icon, mail reopens exactly where I left it. Perhaps mail is the exception?? I incorrectly surmised that all the dock apps acted that way.

  • Change in Terminal Behavior

I upgraded computers and OSs - was using Terminal 1.4.6 on my G4. Now have a G5 with Terminal 1.5.
On the G4, when I entered "bbedit /file/location/" in Terminal, BBedit would automatically start up and open the file.
When I try this on the G5 I get a Command not found error.
I can't figure out why this would have changed (though I am at about the kindergarten level when it comes to Unix, etc.)
Is there a command I can use in the G5 that would do the same thing?
    iMac G5 2.1GHz PowerPC Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Not the Unix scripting tools checkbox. When you install BBEdit it asks you if you want to install the command line tools. I'm guessing your path to the tools is messed or the tools are missing.
You can reinstall the command line tools by clicking on the 'Install Command Line Tools' button in the Tools section of the BBEdit preferences.

  • Terminal behavior when exiting screen apps like "Top"

    Hello.
I have a problem I had with my older PowerBook that I cannot remember how I fixed. How do you stop the screen from clearing when you exit a text based app like Top or Vi. I remember some sort of setting that can be changed but...
I have done some searching but can't find an answer, I think that the terms are a little too common, like screen, clear, whatever.
Anyway, thanks in advance if this one comes up a lot.

I don't know what else to tell you, except to ensure that you have the bottom three options enabled. It works here. This is the output from two consecutive runs of top with the window set to display 41 lines.:

  • How do I increase the width of the first column in the Terminal ls -l command?

I am now running 10.9.x, but I've experienced the problem described in the question over the last several iterations of OS X.
I use bash as my interactive shell. When I display the "ls -l" command in Terminal the output is often very difficult for me to scan, because the columns in which are displayed the several fields of the records for the listed files are misaligned (different left-hand first-letter starting points for left-aligned text-valued fields; different right-hand low-digit alignment of numerical fields).
When I look more closely at the mess displayed in my Terminal window, it appears that the cause of the problem may be that no minimum width, or an inadequate minimum width, has somewhere been set or defined for the first column of each record, containing the file's "mode" string (permissions, etc.); for all records in which this string is of equal length, the succeeding columns for all fields in those records are themselves aligned.
It has not always been thus for me in the Terminal with OS X, or else I might not dream that the world could be a better place in this one respect. But if I launch an interactive csh-shell instead of bash in Mavericks today, the columns of the ls -l command there align no better.
I've found no help in the Unix man pages for the ls command. There is a COLUMNS environment  variable whose value is supposed to be used by the ls command to set the width of every column displayed, but this is not what I want to do, and in my shell "ls -l" seems to ignore the exported variable anyway.
There is also an LS_COLWIDTHS environment variable that is described as setting column widths on a field-by-field basis, at least for some fields, but the the mode column is not included among those whose width is supposed to be adjustable, and my shell seems to ignore the value of this variable as well.
I've looked in my rather simple ~/.profile and ~/.bashrc files for anything that I might plausibly suspect of producing or perpetuating this behavior, but there is nothing there. Any suggestions about how to remedy this problem?

    John,
I would like you to perform a safe boot. On reboot, press and hold the shift key at the chime, until the grey horizontal bar appears. After you type in your password, press and hold the shift key again, then click the right arrow to login, and release the shift key when your desktop appears. • Russian fonts in terminal application

I cannot get terminal to print Russian fonts when I switch to the Russian language. I get the UTF-8 codes instead of the cyrillic characters. If I hit enter after typing a string of codes the terminal then prints the codes in cyrillic and displays an unrecognized command message. I'm using SWI-Prolog and I need to have the terminal display Russian characters. There is no choice for Russian in the terminal settings -- there are Chinese and Korean setttings. Help would be invaluable, since I now have to run Linux to get the terminal behavior I need. If Linux can do it, Mac must also be able to!

  • [SOLVED] Open new Screen windows in current directory?

GNOME Terminal has been my preferred terminal application for quite some time; lately, however, I have been using xterm and screen.
In gnome-terminal (and probably in other tabbed terminal apps), opening a new tab (by default) presents the user with a shell (BASH, in my case) opened to the old tab's PWD. If possible, I'd like to have Screen re-create this functionality....
I've found this page on the subject, but my experimentation with Screen windows (which has shown me that new windows are not started as subshells of the window from which they are created) suggests that the described method will not work.
Does anyone know of a way to make Screen emulate this bit of gnome-terminal behavior?
    Thanks!
    Edit:
I just found this information. It seems that issuing the screen command itself (from within Screen) will open a new window in the current directory. As I almost always use the C-a c keybinding to open new windows, I hadn't realized that this works.
I'm going to attempt to create a keybinding to do what I want. I'll post an update with the results.
Last edited by ssjlegendx (2008-08-03 01:38:29)

After looking further into the issue, it seems that the aforementioned keybinding might not be possible. (Explicitly binding C-a c to screen does not alter the normal functioning of that key combination.) Thinking about the situation, it makes sense that Screen cannot know the PWD without getting information from inside the shell (i.e., without being invoked from within the shell).
To overcome this issue, I added the following to my ~/.bashrc:
    if [ $TERM == "screen" ]; then
    alias s='screen'
    fi
Though this leaves the behavior of C-a c unaltered, using the alias s seems to be a simple way to achieve the functionality I wanted. (It might even prove useful to have the "option" of creating a window in the original directory via C-a c.)
    Edit:
I have since modified the above as follows:
    if [[ $TERM =~ screen(.linux)? ]]; then
    alias s='screen'
    fi
This causes the alias to be set even when running screen from a regular tty (where $TERM is screen.linux).

  • IWork '08 applications won't start on my Mac Pro, 10.5.1

I installed iWork '08 (5-person family license); install seemed to go well. None of the three iWork '08 applications opens. I don't even get to the "please enter your license number" screen: a few bounces and then immediate premature termination. None of my other applications appears to be affected. I'm quite confident my disk drive directory is uncorrupted.
I tried all of the following without benefit:
    1. Restarting computer
    2. Restarting in Safe mode
    3. Reinstalling iWork '08
    4. Updating through Software Update
Curiously, I also have a demo copy of iWork '06. Keynote shows the same immediate termination behavior, but Pages opens normally and shows me the appropriate "do you want to use this in demo mode" startup screen.
I installed iWork '08 and ran it successfully on my wife's Power PC (dual 2 GHz) running 10.4.11, using the same source disk. It also works without a hitch on my 24" white Intel iMac running 10.5.1.
Here's a dump from system.log on the Mac Pro:
    Dec 25 16:01:14 Macintosh Keynote754: * Assertion failure in -NSMenu itemAtIndex:, /SourceCache/AppKit/AppKit-949/Menus.subproj/NSMenu.m:819

Additional debugging information: creating a dummy new account on the Mac Pro allows me to use iWork. So there's something specific to my main user account -- that DOESN'T turn off in Safe mode -- that's interfering with starting iWork but doesn't mess up other programs. Man, I REALLY don't want to have to dump my main user Library and put it back piece by piece until I find the offending code. Any suggestions?

  • IWork 08 apps won't launch

Last night I installed iWork '08 on my Intel iMac 10.5.1. Now none of the applications will launch they just bounce a bit and then quit. I have narrowed down the culprit to a process in the activity monitor
PID 167 pboard. When I force quit this iWork will launch correctly. However on restart the process pboard has recommenced and once more the iWork apps will not launch.
I am not sure what the process is and neither am I sure why it is interfering with iWork. Its parent process is launchd (105). I have an identical iMac on which iWork launches correctly. The only difference I can see is that the culprit Mac is running PTH Pasteboard and the other is not. However removing the PTH preference pane does not solve the problem and the process pboard is still running.

I have the same problem. Installed iWork '08 (5-person family license); install seemed to go well. None of the three iWork '08 applications opens. • MDB (2-phase commit) behavior during abnormal JMS termination

    Hello to everyone!
I plan to test the following scenario tomorrow (sort of a bug replication in our system).
Anyway, wanted to know in advance the expected behavior (just in case one of you already know
or have an experience related to this test). Thank you in advance.
    Scenario:
I want to test/know the behavior of a 2-phase commit (2PC) MDB when JMS server abnormally exits
    (say the process was killed).
    Test flow:
start app server --> deploy 2pc-mdb --> send dummy data --> kill jms process --> restart jms process
    1. will the connection be closed properly?
    2. when jms server restarts, will the value of active consumer(count) doubled?
note: i think after mdb deployment, corresponding destination consumer count is 1.
the problem that occurred in our system was that the consumer count doubled after server restarted.
it seem like the previous connection was not closed when the jms server abnormally terminated.
any inputs will be greatly appreciated.
    thanks and best regards.

You have to use TxDataSource for container managed tx or if you are using JTA (in
    addition to ofcourse doing 2PC).

I have a simple container managed Message Driven Bean. Using a destination
    type
    javax.jms.Queue.
When the onMessage method finishes the Message is still Pending on the
    queue.
    see the ejb-jar.xml below
    <ejb-jar>
    <enterprise-beans>
    <message-driven>
    <display-name>IvrMessageBean</display-name>
    <ejb-name>IvrMsgBean</ejb-name>
    <ejb-class>com.edocs.ps.ivr.IvrMsgBean</ejb-class>
    <transaction-type>Container</transaction-type>
    <acknowledge-mode>Auto-acknowledge</acknowledge-mode>
    <message-driven-destination>
    <destination-type>javax.jms.Queue</destination-type>
    </message-driven-destination>
    </message-driven>
    </enterprise-beans>
    </ejb-jar>
I noticed when I set a JDBC TX DataSource to 2 Phase Commit, the JMS
    transaction
started commitig and nothing was left pending in the Queue.
Does 2PC have to be set in a DataSource for Container Managed MDB's to
    work?

  • Inconsistent aggregation behavior - activation will be terminated

    Hi BW Gurus
DSO activation is failing with the error message : "Inconsistent aggregation behavior - activation will be terminated"
Can any one please suggest on the above issue like how it will be caused and resolved
    Thanks in advance
    Venkat

    Hi....
If u r getting error in data activation, try the below procedure
If u want to activate the DSO the status of all the requests must be green.
If all requests are not in green then this eeror will come.
Right click on the DSO-> Administrator data target.
Thaere check whrther the status of any request is yellow or red.
May be that load going on in some other chain......just click on the Monitor icon.
Then in the IP monitor .
    Go to the Details tab.
Expand the Process chain node->right click ->Display messages.
If you are loading through DTP.
Then it will take u to the DTP monitor.......
If PC node is not there, then go to the header tab->click on the IP->it will take u to the IP scheduler
->there in the Schedule tab->a Where used list icon is there,it will show u all the chains.
If that is also not there...then that IP is not a part of any chain, may be it is an Adhoc run,
wait until the load get completed, then repeat the DSO activation.
If there is any red request, then first check why it failed, try to rectify the error and repeating the load.if it is not required just delete the request
    then repeat the DSO activation
    Hope this helps.......

  • Ugh!  Please restore old Terminal.app focus-follows-mouse behavior!

The 10.4 and prior Terminal.app's focus-follows-mouse feature allowed one to type into the terminal by mousing over it even if the Terminal wasn't the currently focussed application. It didn't focus Terminal when you did this, but did direct keyboard input to it.
10.5's Terminal.app only allows focus follows mouse to work when it's the focussed application, which destroys about 80% of this feature's usability for me. I like to keep things like finder and browser windows overlapping most of a terminal window and then just slide the mouse over to the terminal to type there, and I can no longer do that in 10.5. Now I have to click on the Terminal window, bringing all my terminal windows forward and obscuring the windows I wanted on top. Very annoying.
Is there any way to restore the old behaviour? If not, can we please have it back?
Luckily, 10.4's Terminal.app still behaves properly in 10.5, so I'm using it, but I'd like to have some of the new features of 10.5's Terminal.app. Unfortunately, "broken" focus-follows-mouse is a deal-breaker for me.

    The command I know,
defaults write com.apple.Terminal FocusFollowsMouse -string Yes
seems to work about the same in Leopard as in Tiger for me. I don't remember ever being able to get focus-follows-mouse behaviour to work in a non-active application from an active non-focus-follows-mouse application. In other words one can focus follows mouse from one Terminal to another, but not from Finder to Terminal.
The X11 equivalent (why the inconsistent key and value?) is
defaults write com.apple.X11 wm_ffm -bool true
I remember being able to focus-follows-mouse between Terminal and X11, but cannot in Leopard. However, I also cannot in Tiger 10.4.11 either, so maybe it is my memory that is faulty.
What I don't seem to be able to do, but could do in Tiger, is
defaults write com.apple.X11 swapaltmeta -int 1
On Tiger, that would make the option key the meta key, so that e.g. alt-d would delete forward one word, etc. On Leopard, this seems to be a NOP which means that cmd is the only possible meta key, which I personally find rather confusing.

  • Terminal:  strange behavior

First, sorry for my english, it’s not good enough, but I hope you understand me
I’ve got problem with Terminal: commands are not working as they have to.
For example I want to get power management settings with this command: sudo pmset -g
That’s what I see after typing the password:
    Gex-Mac:~ evgeny$ sudo pmset -g
    Password:
    Active Profiles:
    Battery Power -1
    AC Power -1*
    Currently in use:
    Gex-Mac:~ evgeny$
It’s clear that information displayed is insufficient.
Also I can’t do some other things, such as: change hibernation mode, disable sudden motion sensor, etc.
When computer is booted from MAC OS X DVD Terminal works correctly.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance

You know that one way to resolve this issue would be to reinstall and then bring the system back to 10.6.6 or 10.6.7 using the Combo updater. Reinstall gives you new system files while leaving everything else in place. But, as always, you should have a reliable backup, just in case.
You might also want to post in the Unix forum, as suggested earlier.
