Terminal command to show ...

Is there a simple command to print the number of processors and the graphic card type in the terminal? Any ideas?

Number of CPUs:
echo ${${${(f)"$( system_profiler SPHardwareDataType
)"}[6]}# Number Of CPUs: }
There should be six spaces between the sharp sign and 'Number'.
Graphic Card Type:
echo ${${${${(f)"$( system_profiler
SPDisplaysDataType )"}[2]}%:}# }
Similarly, there should be four spaces between the sharp sign and the last parenthesis.
For some reason, in the process of copying and pasting these commands from Safari to the terminal, I lose those spaces.

I used a terminal command in Lion to show the LIbrary in the Users folder, and now the Finder is behaving erratically, hanging up and becoming almost paralyzed.  Can anyone tell me how to reverse the terminal command for show Library.  The command I used was:
    chflags nohidden ~/Library/

Showing the Library folder will not cause the problem you've described. Nevertheless:
    chflags hidden ~/Library
will hide the folder. To reveal the folder:
    chflags nohidden ~/Library
Note, there is no "/" after Library.

  • Terminal command for showing bandwidth

    Hallo,
is there a way to show my current internet or LAN bandwith in the terminal?
    Thank you. Hannes

If you have another Mac, like at your work, and you can get through your work's firewalls and ssh to it, you could, from the keyboard,
    scp localSourcefile ${Work}:destinationDirectory
to get an indication of your upload speed and
    scp ${Work}:sourcefile localDestinationDirectory
to get an indication of your download speed (assuming your work's effective bandwidth was always going to be much greater than your home's bandwidth). Those commands will provide you an indication of actual throughput ("goodput") of your file transfer. Your file should be a "respectable" size, though, so as to get a decent average value.
I am not aware of any single command that will just tell you throughput. Seems like you'd have to be transferring a file to obtain that information, e.g., with scp.
For use in a bash shell script, I played around with trying to do an scp and piping it to awk (e.g.,
thruput=`scp localSourcefile ${Work}:destinationDirectory | awk '{ print $4 }'` && echo $thruput but I couldn't get it to work. That is something that you might try experimenting with on your own, though. Plus, you would have had to set up passwordless ssh with DSA public key exchange in order to make it a "hands-off" shell script.

Thank you for this article about show/hide terminal commands. In Yosemite 10.10 Terminal Can you also please tell me how to hide with a password then show again already existing folder created on a system drive and also an external drive. Please include the path to folder name "wbfiles". Thank you Winwoodb

Thanks for both positive, useful and sarcastic responses. The main reason is why I want to do this is becasuse I use different browsers, and all the cache they make is 2-3GB/day, as I use the web the most.
I see the reason why NOT TO clear it and I do understand it, but after a week it is 10-15GB for me.
And no, there isnt anyone else using my Mac, and the logs which I would nuke at every start and only keep the last and updated logs. I only need the startup and boot log.
@barney-15E yes it would be fun though
So then, I wont do anythings, as it cannot be done the way I wanted. I'll keep using Onyx.

  • What are the terminal commands to list all plugins, extensions, etc?

I remember a while ago reading a thread on diagnosing kernel panics and such, where someone listed a number of commands (I think there were four separate terminal commands) which produced lists of plugins, daemons, background enhancers, extensions etc which could sap resources or drive up temperature without necessarily showing up in activity monitor or anything like that.
Anyone know what these commands are? I'm having some serious overheating problems at the moment when doing nothing but for instance watching a youtube video with no other processes running so I'd like to get these dumps and see if there's anything installed which could be causing trouble.

  • Terminal Commands for Internet Connect VPN?

I could maybe do this as an applescript but I'm hoping there are terminal commands which I can incorporate into an rsync script...
I need to open a PPTP VPN connection on a computer (Internet Connect VPN client, 10.4.8) , to connect to VPN services on OS X Server (10.4.8). The configuration works fine but really needs manual intervention at times. I would like to just script the equivalent of hitting the 'connect' button, so this can be run by cron.
    Any ideas or links?
    Ta.
    -david

I did repair permissions with disk Utility and I used Onyx to delete the various caches, but that didn't work.
Everything is functioning. The problem isn't on the VPN server side, because I can log into the VPN on my Powerbook and the status shows correctly. There's definitely something going on with my G5.
This isn't a really huge deal, but it would be nice if the status indicated that I'm connected when I'm connected.

    Hi,
The APs image is LWAPP and to access the config t command we need to convert the IOS to Autonomous.. here is the step by step procedure that we need to follow to get the issue resolved..
    C1130 Software (C1130-RCVK9W8-M)
I request you to do download any image from the below link and perform the conversion from LWAPP image to autonomous..
    http://www.cisco.com/cisco/software/release.html?mdfid=279537722&flowid=6775&softwareid=280805680&release=12.4.25d-JA&rellifecycle=ED&relind=AVAILABLE&reltype=latest
    the method to convert is..
download TFTPd32 from google and install it on ur PC.. point the image that you have downloaded in the TFTP server..
connect  a ethernet cable between ur laptop and AP.. both should be in the same  subnet.. and connect a console cable and get the hyperterminal console  access and issue the command..
    AP>en
AP#debug lwapp console cli or debug capwap console cli
    AP#config t
    AP(confg)int fa 0
AP(confg-if)ip addr (same subnet as that of the laptop)
    AP(confg-if)end
    AP#archieve download-sw /force-reload /overwrite tftp:///
    eg-
Assuming tftp ip address is 10.0.0.1 and the image is c1130-k9w7-tar.124-25d.JA.tar, then..
    AP#archieve download-sw /force-reload /overwrite tftp://10.0.0.1/c1130-k9w7-tar.124-25d.JA.tar
The AP will reload and it will come up with IOS image and you will be able to enter the config mode
lemme know if this answered your question..
    Regards

Hi, Thanks for the reply, I appreciate it.
What do you mean by "pick up"?
I mean to show what the DNS numbers are that the router is using.
They are not entered in the DNS server field in Networks, TCP/IP tab.
If you mean refresh the client settings, the DNS settings are obtained as part of the DHCP lease (or PPP connection in the case of PPP).
The user/ OP is actually using PPPoA, when i googled PPPoA.. seems he is using Cisco perhaps.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Point-to-PointProtocol_overATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode)
"PPPOA or PPPoA, Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) over ATM, is a network protocol for encapsulating PPP frames in ATM AAL5. It is used mainly with cable modem, DSL and ADSL services.
It offers standard PPP features such as authentication, encryption, and compression. If it is used as the connection encapsulation method on an ATM based network it can reduce overhead slightly (around 0.58%) in comparison to PPPoE".
Essentially the original poster removed the OpenDNS #s from his DNS server field in the TCP/IP tab (b/c they seem to make Adobe.com inaccessible to him)
removing them & allowing his router to "pick them up from the ISP" seems to solved his problem.
However he can not, find what the numbers are that are being utilized,
b/c they are not entered as usual in the Network, & part of the DHCP lease,
    or in Airport admin Utility.
I/ we wondered, if there was a Terminal command that will show what the
numbers are that are being used .
Does that help clarify what I mean? Sorry to be so long winded.

  • Terminal doesn't show changes immediately

    Hi,
since some days I have an annoying problem: When I type something, for example 10 x [Return], my xterm doesn't "react" immediately. Nothing happens for at least several seconds. When I switch the window and switch back the input / command is showed / executed as expected..
    Any ideas?
    xterm
    Version        : 266-1
    dwm
    Version        : 5.8.2
    bash
    Version        : 4.1.009-1

"Monaco" font should work, but try using "Osaka-regular-Mono".
There was a similar report a few weeks ago:
    [10.6 Terminal.app doesn't show complex characters|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10107040&#1010704 0]
So it's not only you having the problem, but my Terminal.app (iMac, 10.6.1) displays Japanese characters without problem, and I have no idea what is wrong with your Terminal. If "Monaco" font is used then "Hiragino Kaku Gothic" (HiraKakuProN-W3) is substituted for Japanese characters.
I did clean install of 10.6. Did you upgrade from 10.5.x? I think you may send a bug report/feedback to Apple.

  • Multiple entries in 'Open Width'using the above terminal command

/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Frameworks/LaunchServices.fram ework/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user
I tried using the above terminal command to reset launch services but it does not seem to work. I still have multiple entries. What am I doing wrong?

You may have to clarify. Multiple entries in Open With can be normal. For example if you have multiple versions of an application for whatever reason, they will all show. Plus, any applications that report being able to open a file type will show (had an annoyingly long list for text files on my old machine as some apps that didn't even handle documents such as games reported being able to open them).

  • Need a Terminal Command

Hi, I have no idea how to use terminal so I need code I can copy and paste. I am running iFreeMem and its crashed. These type of apps do not show up in the force quit box so I have no idea how to force quit it. My only idea was Terminal but I don't know how to do it.
Can someone please help? Has this ever happened to anyone? I just read some articles that made me decide to trash the app altogether, but I need to get it closed first. :o)
I have to many things going on to shut the computer down at the moment and the iFreeMem screen is in the way of everything (floats on top). Thanks in advance!

You must know either the correct case sensitive name of the application, such as iFreeMem. If you do then the Terminal command is:
    killall iFreeMem
    Press RETURN.
However, even though iFreeMem is an application it may fork a process with a different identifier. If so the above command will fail. In this case you need to find the PID - Process IDentifier. In the Terminal enter, top, and press RETURN. If the process is in the listing then you get the PID from the lefthand column. Use the same killall command but with the PID instead of the application name.
If you cannot find a PID, then you need to restart the computer. If the application runs automatically then you need to uninstall its components. See the following:
    Uninstalling Software: The Basics
Most OS X applications are completely self-contained "packages" that can be uninstalled by simply dragging the application to the Trash. Applications may create preference files that are stored in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder. Although they do nothing once you delete the associated application, they do take up some disk space. If you want you can look for them in the above location and delete them, too.
Some applications may install an uninstaller program that can be used to remove the application. In some cases the uninstaller may be part of the application's installer, and is invoked by clicking on a Customize button that will appear during the install process.
Some applications may install components in the /Home/Library/Applications Support/ folder. You can also check there to see if the application has created a folder. You can also delete the folder that's in the Applications Support folder. Again, they don't do anything but take up disk space once the application is trashed.
Some applications may install a startupitem or a Log In item. Startupitems are usually installed in the /Library/StartupItems/ folder and less often in the /Home/Library/StartupItems/ folder. Log In Items are set in the Accounts preferences. Open System Preferences, click on the Accounts icon, then click on the LogIn Items tab. Locate the item in the list for the application you want to remove and click on the "-" button to delete it from the list.
Some software use startup daemons or agents that are a new feature of the OS. Look for them in /Library/LaunchAgents/ and /Library/LaunchDaemons/ or in /Home/Library/LaunchAgents/.
If an application installs any other files the best way to track them down is to do a Finder search using the application name or the developer name as the search term. Unfortunately Spotlight will not look in certain folders by default. You can modify Spotlight's behavior or use a third-party search utility, Easy Find, instead. Download Easy Find at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.
Some applications install a receipt in the /Library/Receipts/ folder. Usually with the same name as the program or the developer. The item generally has a ".pkg" extension. Be sure you also delete this item as some programs use it to determine if it's already installed.
There are also several shareware utilities that can uninstall applications:
    AppZapper
    Automaton
    Hazel
    CleanApp
    Yank
    SuperPop
    Uninstaller
    Spring Cleaning
Look for them at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.
