Terminal home screen/computer name

Correct me if I'm wrong, but when you start Terminal shouldn't it show:
Last login: <login date> on ttyp1
Welcome to Darwin!
<computer name>:~<shortname>$
Mine does not show my computer name, instead it lists a string: "n2-213-113"
What does this mean? (forgive me if it's nothing, but if I see something change from 'default', I flip out)

That's the host name your ISP has given your computer. You should be able to change it by going to the /etc/hostconfig file and look for a line with HOSTNAME in it (might not exist by default}. Just change or add it and set it to your desired host name:
HOSTNAME=newHostName
You might have to reboot for it to see the change (or just use the hostname command until you do reboot).

  • Terminal shows old computer name (after migration)

After using migration assistant (over Ethernet) from a 2007 mini to a mid-2011 mini:    the Terminal shows the old computer name in the prompt.
(Many other oddities -- every file action brings up "Finder wants to make changes" and requires a password, to move or copy or delete any file).    I see this problem has been reported before over the  years but I did not find any answer that didn't have further questions

Aha, changing it in "Sharing" seems to have worked for me (suggestion from 'Kappy' in the 2008 "Re: Migration: (UNIX) thread, although it did not work for others in that thread at the time):

  • Terminal shows wrong computer name

When I launch Terminal the name before the prompt is MacMini, which is the name of another computer on the network. How do I fix it?

Pedantically and FWIW, IP routers are entirely unrelated to DNS. Your router is probably a gateway of some sort, and probably includes other functions beyond routing; probably a firewall and a DHCP server. (There are pure routers around.)
I'd expect you are running NAT and DHCP here.
And if that is the case, then I'd expect to see a domain name (one that is purely and carefully bogus, or preferably one that you have registered) set on the DHCP server, and provided to the clients via DHCP. I'd also expect to see two DNS servers referenced within the DHCP server configuration, your existing 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4.
Picking a bogus domain is far harder than many folks realize; best to have a real and registered one, or a subdomain of a real and registered one.

  • Terminal using wrong computer name

I'm using a MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2012), running Yosemite 10.10.1, and having a really strange issue with terminal. Occasionally when I open Terminal, it tells me I'm logged into bash on a different device. For example, I'm looking at my terminal now, and instead of saying:
    Nathan's-Macbook-Pro:~ Nathan$
    it says
    davids-iPhone:~ Nathan$
I have no idea who david is or where his iPhone is. My only guess is it has something to do with being on open university wifi, but I still don't see why bash would display anything but my own device. Help?

  • Terminal-IP address instead of computer name is showing

Hi, my computer is behaving strangely lately and I noticed that in terminal the host name is displayed like this:
    c-XX-XXX-XX-XX-XXX:~ myusername%
with XX numbers corresponding to my actual IP address
When I looked in my 1 month old backup, it is displayed correctly there with an actual drive name.
In addition, the current shell is tsch, despite the fact that I am running OSX10.4.11 where it is supposed to be bash as far as I understand.
Is displaying IP address in terminal instead of computer name normal? If not, how to reset this?
Any help would be much appreciated.

    BDAqua,
    My report:
    1. Moved preferences.plist from /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/preferences.plist into trash.
    2. rebooted.
    3. Computer now shows [localhost] in terminal as a host name-success. However, now Internet does not work.
    4. Went to System preferences>Network>Built-in-Ethernet. There was a blank page (all settings gone).
    5. No matter. Inputed comcast.net in Search domains field (Comcast is my provider). Clicked on Apply now. All settings came back, internet works.
    6. Now Terminal again shows my IP as a host name, but at least I know that this change came from Comcast.
Unexpected benefit: Apparently this procedure got rid of annoying "Your settings are being modified by another application" bug-Good to know, thanks.
Conclusion: For some reason Comcast sees fit to modify Terminal settings.
Big thanks for making the problem clearer.

Hello all..   I hope someone here can help.  I recently downloaded some updates to my imac.  Since then the computer starts but I get the home screen opening without the logon box.    I can't open any programs or files and if I click on the Safari tab it disappears from the dock.  I've tried rebooting with no joy.
I contacted technical help at Apple and was told to hold down the ctrl and alt keys with two other keys, I think the S or P keys when powering up. This worked
and the computer seemed fine but now the problem has reappeared.  Is there a way to removed downloaded updates from the computer or revert it to an earlier state?   Sorry for the long question. Hopefully one of you clever people can help.   Simon

  • Changing the screen name or computer name.

when i installed leopard and it asked for information on the computer name i put the wrong information. how do i change the computer name. i looked in accounts under system prefences and i changed the name there but in finder under places where there is the home button it is the old one. how do i completely change all of it to the new one.
    thanks

Open the Accounts pane of System Preferences, unlock the padlock, control-click your account, choose Advanced Options, and change it. If you change the home directory's path, you also need to move its contents in the Finder.

  • Artist Name Cut Off on iTunes Home Screen

I have WinXP, 1280x1024 resolution. No other problems with resolution. In iTunes, the artist's names are cut off under the album image and title in the center area of the home screen (New Releases, Just for You etc.). There is no way to expand these window areas. It's difficult if not impossible to see the artist associated with the album. Any ideas?

The title and action safe should also be applied when dealing with video to be 100% sure about what you want to see, usually the widescreens are a bit more forgiving..but
Needs to be done in FCP if this is part of the video

  • Computer Name and Flurry only available Screen Savers

I've lost all the built in Apple Screen Savers except for Computer Name and Flurry. Has anyone else had this problem? How do I fix it? I looked in Computer > System > Library > Screen Savers and saw all of them there, but when I open up my System Prefs, they aren't listed. I tried repairing permissions but that didn't work. Any ideas?
Also, I have an iSight camera, and PhotoBooth is telling me my card isn't compatible, even though I used it one time when I first installed Leopard. Any clues on that one? I'm thinking this has something to do with one of the recent updates.

OK, so after not getting anywhere (not to mention growing tired of too much desktop) I disconnected my secondary monitor that was hooked via a VGA to DVI connector to my ATI X1900 XT card, and now all the screen savers are back. Looks like it just didn't like having the connector.

  • Is there a way to control the computer name that an application sees in 2012 Server (i.e. Terminal Server Compatibility flags)

I’m looking for the proper location to set the TS Program Compatibility Flags (for controlling application execution in execute mode) under 2012 server.
On Server 2003, we can use:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Terminal Server\Compatibility\Application\MYAPP
On Server 2008, we can use:
    HKLM\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Terminal Server\Compatibility\Applications\MYAPP
Is there a similar setting in 2012 Server?

I have an open question about this issue on the partner site, with no fix yet. Did any of you find the answer? I have a client who needs to have Server 2012 R2 report user name or the name of the computer accessing the RDS server.
They currently have a 2000 Terminal Server, and I always thought it was reporting user name to MAS 90, but when I looked recently, I found that it actually reports the name of the computer that is connecting to the terminal server, which also works fine.
MAS 90 just needs to see a different name for each connection.
These are the current entries on the 2000 terminal server, and they cause it to show remote computer name in MAS 90 fid0map.ini file:
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Terminal Server\Compatibility\Applications\PVXWIN]
    "Flags"=dword:0000001f
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Terminal Server\Compatibility\Applications\PVXWIN32]
