Terminal not running commands.
I recently tried running a command to uninstall Xcode "sudo /Developer/Library/uninstall-devtools –mode=all" but it failed after asking me to enter a password. Now after I run the Terminal I get nothing for a response and the window is now named "Terminal-login-86x24". I looked for everything online and on Apple support. What should I do?

That command looks incomplete. From the readme:
++++++++
Uninstalling Xcode Developer Tools
To uninstall Xcode developer tools on the boot volume along with the <Xcode> directory, from a Terminal window type:
$ sudo <Xcode>/Library/uninstall-devtools --mode=all
To remove the underlying developer content on the boot volume, but leave the <Xcode> directory and supporting files untouched, from a Terminal window type:
$ sudo <Xcode>/Library/uninstall-devtools --mode=systemsupport
To just remove the UNIX development support on the boot volume, but leave the <Xcode> directory and supporting files untouched, from a Terminal window type:
$ sudo <Xcode>/Library/uninstall-devtools --mode=unixdev
Finally, to just uninstall the <Xcode> directory you can simply drag it to the trash, or from a Terminal window type:
$ sudo <Xcode>/Library/uninstall-devtools --mode=xcodedir
NOTE: The uninstaller that ships with previous versions of the Xcode developer tools will not clean everything off of your system properly. You should use the one installed with these Xcode developer tools.

Have terminal NOT run a script when it loads
I recently wrote a basic shell script and saved it as a .command file to run from the desktop. Since then, whenever I open the terminal it automatically runs the script then exits the terminal. If I hide the file (mv pt-noplugs.command .ptnoplugs.command) it simply opens the terminal and closes it immediately. I have tried changing the default shell from bash to something else but this doesn't seem to make a difference. I also don't seem to have a .bashrc file when it normally is /home/user/.bashrc (I'm used to linux). Any help would be appreciated. Below is the script:
# Shell Script to start Pro Tools HD with no waveshell Plug-In
echo "*"
echo "* Script: pt-noplugs.command"
echo "* Please Leave This Window Open Until ProTools Has Exited"
echo "*"
# Move waveshell Plug-In Files to Plug-Ins (Unused)
cd "/Library/Application Support/Digidesign/Plug-Ins/"
mv -v Waveshell-DAE_5.9.1.dpm "../Plug-Ins (Unused)"
# Start Pro-Tools
/Applications/Digidesign/Pro\ Tools/Pro\ Tools\ HD.app/Contents/MacOS/Pro\ Tools\ HD
# Restore Plug-Ins directory
cd "../Plug-Ins (Unused)"
mv Waveshell-DAE_5.9.1.dpm ../Plug-Ins
echo "*"
echo "* Thank You. This Window May Now Be Closed"
echo "*"
exitI forgot to add: when I login as a different user and load terminal is does NOT run the script mentioned before.

Command that Works in Terminal Not Running as Launch Agent
Trying to run the following command as a Launch Agent (OS X 10.7):
/usr/bin/find /Users/username/Documents/Dropbox/Public -type f -mtime +2 -print0 | xargs -0 rm -r
Created a plist file (reproduced below) and saved to ~/Library/Launch Agents, but the command isn't executed either at the specified time or when the agent is loaded via launchctl.
If I change the command to a simple Applescript test:
osascript -e 'tell Application "Finder" to display dialog "hello"'
It runs correctly as a launch agent when loaded and as the specified time
Which means there's something wrong with the first command (find). But the command runs as written when executed manually in the terminal.
Suggestions? Thanks.

[solved] script/keybinding to launch terminal and run command
the answer is probably simple. but here's the idea.
i use cmus as my music player. at the moment, i have to open a terminal and then type 'cmus'. i'd like to set up a keybinding to run cmus. (incidentally, i'm trying to do this in i3.)
the code
exec cmus
doesn't work, presumably because 'cmus' has to be loaded from within the terminal. (is that right?) what's the syntax for passing on the command 'cmus' to the terminal? what's the best way to do this?
Last edited by anti-destin (2012-03-15 23:52:40)bindsym mod+c exec urxvtc -name cmus -e cmus
urxvtc => Your terminal here if you use something else. Most support -name and -e. Please read their man pages.
-name => Useful for xprop. It assigns the WM_CLASS which can be used for tagging clients.
man urxvt
-e command [arguments]
Run the command with its command-line arguments in the urxvt
window; also sets the window title and icon name to be the basename
of the program being executed if neither -title (-T) nor -n are
given on the command line. If this option is used, it must be the
last on the command-line. If there is no -e option then the default
is to run the program specified by the SHELL environment variable
or, failing that, sh(1).

Open Terminal and Run Commands
Hi I have to ping several IP adresses on a regular basis. Therefore I would like to create an Applescript application that will run terminal and ping the specified IPs so that I can see the results. Any ideas on how to best complete this?
This script will prompt you to enter the number of times you want to ping each server. You'll need to specify the servers to ping in the "set serverAddresses..." line. It writes the results of each ping to a text file on your desktop and opens the file when finished. The next time you run the script if the text file exists it deletes it first.
set theDesktop to (path to desktop)
set serverAddresses to {"www.microsoft.com", "www.apple.com", "www.cnet.com"}
set pingTimes to text returned of (display dialog "Ping each server how many times?" default answer "1" giving up after 10)
tell application "Finder"
if exists file (theDesktop & "ping replies.txt" as string) then
delete file (theDesktop & "ping replies.txt" as string)
end if
set fileID to (open for access file (theDesktop & "ping replies.txt" as string) with write permission)
repeat with aServer in serverAddresses
try
set pingReply to (do shell script "ping -c " & pingTimes & " " & aServer)
on error
set pingReply to "No reply from server " & aServer
end try
write (pingReply & return & return & "########################" & return & return) to fileID
end repeat
close access fileID
open file (theDesktop & "ping replies.txt" as string)
end tell

Run commands in new tab in Terminal.app
hello, i want to know is there a way to run commands and these opens a new tab in terminal.app.
i know i can open a new tab with cmd+t , but i have a folder with hundreds of files with the name [email protected] and each file has the string ssh://username@server...
i use these folder in the dock like a bookmark of servers that i administrate, if i set that ssh default is the app iTerm.app then every of these file i execute opens in a new tab of iTerm, but if i set ssh default to Terminal.app for every file open a new windows of Terminal.
I would like to use Terminal.app if somebody help to find a way to open these conections in a new tab.
You can try to open the terminal.app, them in safari type ssh://localhost... and you see a new window of terminal.
Sorry for my bad english
Regards
Diego.I wonder if you're too tied to one solution. I do a very, very similar thing to what you're doing, except that I support 900 or so machines (I work for a hosting provider -- so, I'm not kidding.. promise!).
The basics of my setup are as such:
I have the host names of all the servers in a text file. In my .bash_profile I have a routine that loops through each server name and, if needed, generates a bash script named for the server in a directory I've set up in my path (~/bin/hosts). That file has the command string for ssh that I use to connect to the server in it. For example, for a server named 'foo', I'd have a file named '~/bin/hosts/foo', and the contents would look something like this:
ssh -X username@foo
This is the part I really like. I create each one as it's own bash script so that it can be found and indexed by spotlight, which I use as my app launcher. So, once each script has been created, all I have to do is cmd-space (to open spotlight) then type in the server name to continue. This works great except that it opens a new window every time. So annoying. As of today, though, I now have a new bash script:
tab ssh -x username@foo
A very small change, but with a huge effect. The other change is that I put the "tab" subroutine in a bash script in my path as well. So, now when it launches the ssh command it's in a new tab. Exactly as I wanted.
I'm hoping this will help you. Even if not, though, try to remember to keep an open mind. I know the "url" scheme you're using works well, but I actually prefer my way (of course.. I made it up ). Whichever way you go, I wish you the best of luck.
Cheers,

C program not running from terminal as expected
Hi everyone
I am starting C programming as part of my university degree, I understand most of the content so far. I am compiling and running my program in Terminal and I am having a small amount of trouble with running it. Here is how I have set my program up:
• Created folder named "C" on the desktop
• Opened terminal and changed the directory by using the following command: cd /Users/jc/Desktop/C, the directory is changed as the terminal output reads:
JCs-MacBook-Pro:C jc$
• Created main.c file
• Compiled fine in terminal by using: cc main.c
Here is where it breaks down, typing a.out does not run the program (as I expected) but returns the error: "-bash: a.out: command not found", if I drag the file to terminal or type out the absolute path and execute the program runs fine. What is happening and how do I fix it so typing just a.out runs the program?
Thanks in Advance
J.CThe commands to add a folder to your search path (if you haven't changed your shell from the default bash) are:
PATH=$PATH:<absolute path to parent folder>/MyProjectFolder
export PATH
Typing the above at your terminal prompt should allow you to execute your programs without typing ./a.out, but only for the life of the current terminal session (You can type 'printenv' or 'echo $PATH' to verify that your folder was added correctly).
If you wish to add your folder automatically to any terminal session, the above should be saved in a text file named '.profile' in your home folder (the folder you're in when you start Terminal, e.g. /users/raynewbie).
If you wish to add whatever folder is current (wherever I am right now) to your permanent search path, insert the following into .profile:
PATH=$PATH:.
export PATH
The above has the disadvantage of being less secure on multiuser systems. The current, "dot", directory used to be first in the default Unix search path. But when I was in school (during the Lincoln administration) our favorite sport was trying to hack root perms by placing our own version of 'ls' in directories frequented by superusers. Higher powers caught on to this after only a few years and newer systems required you to type the dot. -

The Run command, however, does not.

Mdt 2012 sp1 command line does not run from task sequence
Hi,
I am hoping I can explain this correctly. I am using MDT 2012 and having an issue with running command lines, powershell and batch files that I setup.
The task sequence is set to use an account called "MDTService". it has rights to join the domain but is not in the local admin group of the reference image. a domain GPO renames the local admin account CoAdmin.
when running a command line to, for example, run xcopy a folder and subdirectories to the "program Files x86" directory, it does not copy.
When I log on to the system and use an admin account to manually run the command I do not have an issue. if I log onto the system with the MDTService user and run it, it fails.
How do I get the commands to run from the MDT task sequence? I do not want to make the MDTService user an admin. I have tried the run as option in the task sequence but that did not work. maybe is set it wrong. I used a domain\Admin
account which did not work.
what can I clarify or logs can I post to provide more details.
Thanks in advance.Any account that needs to add files under %ProgramFilesx86% must be granted administrative privileges.

Could not run the script. This command requires an active document.
Hi,
I'm receiving a confusing glitch running a batch process in
FW MX 2004.
I want to resize images in one folder and export them to
another. I step through the batch wizard and on commencement of the
batch receive an error:
quote:
Could not run the script. This command requires an active
document.
FW is telling me it can't run the commands on empty
documents, yet the batch is running on all images selected using
Add All during the batch wizard. Confusing. Similar batches have
worked fine in recent days.
Any ideas?

Terminal Runs Command Automatically
Hello,
I was working on an AppleScripts that would open the terminal and connect to a server via ssh to use as a shortcut. I just realized that I could just create and save a new command in the terminal to get the same result.
Anyway, I somehow made it so now anytime I open a window in the terminal it runs the ssh command to connect to my server. How do I change it back to the default settings?
Thank you.
-Matt
p.s. Let me know if there is a better site or forum to post these types of questions to.Just go to Macintosh HD > Users > +your home folder+ > Library > Preferences and delete the file com.apple.terminal.plist and everything should be fine. Make a .command or .term file to run your SSH session, or use an SSH client like JellyfiSSH.

GUI that open a Linux terminal, run commands and retrieve results
Hi
I am currently designing a GUI that should make it easier for users to execute a command line statement and read the information that is returned.
I should not have any issues with the actual GUI, but I have not been able to find any examples to help with how to open a command terminal, enter a command and retrieve the results. I am aware that using a screen scraper is a possibility, but if anyone is aware of any examples to achieve this, that would be great.
Thanks
MattIs the command line app a simple, straightforward one
that just prints its output? (Eg. ls, dmesg, or any application
that simply print results without reading input)
If so, try this tutorial on calling a program
and reading its output:
http://www.javaworld.com/javaworld/jw-12-2000/jw-1229-traps.html
But if your commandline app is a rich-interactive one
(eg. a full screen menu program or full screen text editor
or something), then it's much much more complicated. -

VivekHi Vivek,
FYI :
JStartupICheckFrameworkPackage: can't find framework package D:\usr\sap\NW2\JC02\exe\jvmx.jar
The above message can be ignored. You will see that message often in perfectly up/running systems as well.
Also, the dev_jcontrol file shows that the server process was terminating !
You need to check std_server0.out file for the errors/exceptions as to why server0 was terminating abruptly. The reason should be apparent from dev_server0 and std_server0 most of the times unless its a startup framework bug where the error messages are not written to the log files.
So, whenever the server process or dispatcher process fails to start, you should check the corresponding dev_server<n> or dev_dispatcher and std_server<n> / std_dispatcher files. Also, usually, there will be some exception (if its application related) in the defaultrace file as well under server<n>\log or dispatcher\log depending on which one is failing to start.
e.g. if server0 is failing to start due to some UME issues, you will see the mention of it in std_server0.out (definitely) and more ellaborate info/exceptions in deafultrace under server0\log as well.
Hope the above helps.
