Testing of applications / updates before deployment or within an OSD image
Hi
I know this might not be the best place to ask for this, but since this is also related to Sccm, here i go...
I guess Windows Updates and new applications are the two most common examples where an issue might break critical applications and you would have to deal with it, even if it's not really an issue caused by Sccm.
While I understand, doing it myself, that a few manual checks are usually ok, are some of you automating the test process so that you positively know that the updates won't prevent your critical apps to work fine, or that the new application or
image bundle is working as expected?
Since I know the price and complexity of Enterprise test tools, can someone recommend some admin friendly tool that would do the trick without being too expensive ?

I think that you can't really automate that; there are too many different (custom) applications out there.

Does this require the application be deployed in a "Expanded Directory Format"

Steps to be followed !!!
1. Take a Copy of the .Ear to test.EAR
2. Rename test.Ear to test.Zip
3. Extract the Files present in the test.zip into a Folder 'test' (this folder has the .War file)
4. Rename .war to .Zip
5. Extract the Contents from .zip to a Folder(myRoot Folder should contain the JSP, WEB-INF, Filters, WebContent etc)
6. Open NWDS --> create a Web Container Project(myContainerWar) in J2EE perspective
7. Select myContainerWar --> right Click --> Choose IMPORT File --> Browse --> Select MYROOT folder created by us. FINISH
WAR holds the total Structure of the Web Component based application.
Meaning WAR structure will get created in the NWDS !!!!
Once you are finished with the Changes, you have to create a EA project in NWDS and add the new WAR to it. Build the .EAR and deploy it !!!

I have just re-installed CS6 Master and it would only doewnload 1gb of the 3gb of updates before it refused to download the remaing 2.2gb because it couldn't update the Application Manager. WHY? It was updating okay before I re-installed it.
Further, it sends you top the Analyser which is no longer supported and it sends you to a page for CS6 which refers you back to it at the bottom. THere was no reference to Application Manager in the log file, only Extension, Restart and Font managers.Eventually found the patch on Google Search. Its in CC and includes the CS versions.ApplicationManager8.0_all.exe

VS2013, SQL Server 2012 Express LocalDB, EF 6.0, VB, desktop application with an end user database
What is a reliable method to follow when there is a schema change for an end user database used by a deployed application? In other words, each end user has their own private data, but the database needs to be expanded for additional features, etc.
I list here the steps it seems I must consider. If I've missed any, please also inform:
(1) From the first time the application is installed, it should have already moved all downloaded database files to a separate known location, most likely some sub-folder in <user>\App Data.
(2) When there's a schema change, the new database file(s) must also be moved into the location in item (1) above.
(3) The application must check to see if the new database file(s) have been loaded, and if not, transfer the data from the old database file(s) to the new database file(s).
(4) Then the application can operate using the new schema.
This may seem basic, but for those of us who haven't done it, it seems pretty complicated. Item (3) seems to be the operative issue for database schema changes. Existing user data needs to be preserved, but using the new schema. I'd like
to understand the various ways it can be done, if there are specific tools created to handle this process, and which method is considered best practice.
(1) Should we handle the transfer in a 'one-time use' application method, i.e. do it in application code.
(2) Should we handle the transfer using some type of 'one-time use' SQL query. If this is the best way, can you provide some guidance if there are different alternatives for how to perform this in SQL, and where to learn/see examples?
(3) Some other method?

To clarify the scenario, I did not mean to imply the end user 'owns' the schema. I was trying to communicate that in my scenario, an end user will have loaded their own private data into the database file originally delivered with the application.
If the schema needs to be updated for new application features, the end user's data will of course need to be preserved during the application upgrade if that upgrade includes a database schema change.
Although I listed step 3 as transferring the data, I should have made more clear I was trying to express my limited understanding of how this process "might work", since at the present time I am not an expert with this. I suspected my thinking
is limited and someone would correct me.
This is basically the reason for my post; I am hoping an expert can point me to what I need to learn about to handle database schema changes when application upgrades are deployed. For example, if an SQL script needs to be created and deployed
then I need to learn how to do that. What's the best practice, or most reliable/efficient way to make sure the end user's database is changed to the new schema after the upgraded application is deployed? Correct me if I'm wrong on this,
but updating the end user database will have to be handled totally within the deployment tool or the upgraded application when it first starts up.
If it makes a difference, I'll be deploying application upgrades initially using Click Once from Visual Studio, and eventually I may also use Windows Installer or Wix.

existing component(z component which was created by me) and i selected the application of that component and right clicked and selected START ECATT RECORDING and i have given the test cript name at that i have got one error USER ECATT_HTTPDoesnot exist. How to resolve this problem.

Before you can start recording any webdynpro application make sure that the below settings are done in the ecatt system and the target system , for further information refer ecatt documentation.
Create User ECATT_HTTP in the eCATT System
The administrator in the eCATT system must create a user called ECATT_HTTP(with a password). The user requires no special authorization but must be a system user (in transaction SU01, display the user and choose the Logon data tab. Under User Type, select System).
Activate the Service ecatt_recorder in the eCATT System
1. In the eCATT System, start transaction SICF and navigate to the service ecatt_recorder.
2. Double-click on ecatt_recorder.
3. On the Logon Data tab, enter the user ECATT_HTTPand the password.
4. Choose Save.
5. Select ecatt_recorder and choose Service/Virtual Host -> Activate.
Activate the Service ecattping in the Target Systems
Java System
1. In the Visual Administrator, choose Server ->Services -> Deploy.
2. On the Runtime tab, select Application.
3. Select ecattping.
4. Choose Start Application.
ABAP System
1. In the target system, start transaction SICF and navigate to the service ecattping.
2. Select ecattping and choose Service/Virtual Host -> Activate.

Pro Applications Update 2010-02 installed, but not installed.
I downloaded and installed the latest software update and it said it was successfully installed, but when I look at the applications, they are not updated (e.g. Compressor is version 3.5.2 when it should be 3.5.3). I have opened the applications just to check for the new features, but they are not there.
Is there something I'm not doing? Would reinstalling the apps do anything?I was having the same problem on two of my older systems. It seemed like every week (automatically) or anytime I manually ran software update, it would recommend "Pro Applications Update 2008-05 1.0 3.1 MB". This seem to be a looping problem and it continued even after applying the update. I replaced one of my computers and being a new computer I was not having any problems. Later I upgraded my hard drive and chose "Mac OS Extended (Journaled) Case Sensitive" as the format for my new drive. About a week later the problem started happening on my new computer with a new drive. I also noticed some applications that I migrated over were acting strange. So I re-formatted my drive "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" and the problem has seemed to have gone away. I think some applications and utilities including "software update" (in some instances) may not like a case sensitive file system. Also note that Apple ships their computers Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and I wonder how many companies including Apple beta test both "Mac OS Extended (Journaled) Case Sensitive" and "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)". Any application that writes to a intermediate file on the filesystem or relies on reading and writing to files on the file system could potentially be affected if it were developed on a non case sensitive systems and later deployed on a system that was case sensitive.

I've setup a deployment profile in JDeveloper (10.1.3.0) to deploy a java project to a .jar.
I can right-click on the project and select deploy to jar file. This creates the jar file in
\mywork\myApplication\myProject\deploy\mySource.jar
I then wanted to deploy this using java web start and have successfully created a jnlp file using the deployment descriptor wizard in JDeveloper.
After running the html page and clicking on the link it runs the jar that is in the following location:
\mywork\myApplication\myProject\public_html\apps\mySource.jar
(I'm just deploying this locally on my machine at the moment but will deploy this on an application server).
This all works fine. I then made a change to the original java application in JDeveloper.
I can again right-click on the java project and choose deploy to jar file. This updates the file in
\mywork\myApplication\myProject\deploy\mySource.jar
However, when I run the html page from JDeveloper, the deployed copy of the jar file is not updated.
To workaround this I can deploy the file manually by copying the updated mySource.jar from \mywork\myApplication\myProject\deploy\mySource.jar
into \mywork\myApplication\myProject\public_html\apps\mySource.jar.
At the moment I'm doing this outside the JDeveloper IDE. Is there away to update the deployed version (\mywork\myApplication\myProject\public_html\apps\mySource.jar) within the JDeveloper IDE.

You can point the deployment profile to directly create the jar file in the target directory on your serevr. Just go to the deployment profile and use the context menu to edit its settings.
The "deploy" directory is just the default setting configured in the project properties

Can't Download Application Updates in iTunes
Ever since the last update (before 8.2) I cannot download updates to my purchased apps in iTunes... whenever I sign into the login box... it just re-prompts me to sign in again!! If I enter a wrong password, it flags the error, but will not accept my valid Apple Id password! I have tried changing the password to no avail... I can sign into the iTunes Store and Apple web site just fine (including this forum) just cannot do software updates from within iTunes.... btw I can download those to my iPhone 3g and sync the Apps that way but I want to be able to update on my Mac vs always having to use the phone... any ideas? tia.
Think I found the problem... My Intego NetBarrierX5 firewall has a setting in it's default configuration when 'Information Hiding' is turned on.... I found this by selectively disabling each drop down menu feature... I think the offending parameter is called 'Hide my Apple Id when using iTunes MiniStore' ... this is checked by default along with 'Hide information about my computer and Web Browser' and 'Hide information on the last Web site visited'. I will test this again with just this param turned off the next time I have an app download waiting.

Outdated application revision being deployed?

Hoping someone could let me know if my assumption below is correct!
I was deploying an application which had a deployment to a test collection. I had to make a tweak to it and it went from revision 4 to revision 5. I updated content on the deployment type and waited for the content to go out to the DPs.
I then added a new PC to the test collection and watched the deployment through appenforce.log and noticed that revision 4 was deployed and not revision 5 as I had assumed.
So my question is, when you make a change to an application which has an existing deployment. Does that deployment continue to use the revision it was originally set up with and NOT the most recent revision?
I'm beginning to think that may be the case that to get the latest revision to go out, a new deployment would be required?

Jonathanit always use the latest version which is 5 in this scenario.You need to troubleshoot by looking client logs . did the client receive updated policies ,you can check via policy agent,policyevalutor logs.is this happening across all clients with version
4 or just 1 PC ?

Since migrating from Windows 7 to Windows 8 and upgrading to iTunes 11, the latter has frozen while syncing my devices, usually while at the “determining apps to sync” stage of the process. If I am attempting to download app updates before attempting to sync, the problem normally occurs at the first “installing app x” stage. In addition, the whole iTunes experience is extremely sluggish and will even freeze while searching for a track. Everything worked fine on Windows 7. So far, I have repaired the program several times and have checked for compatibility issues, but there is no Windows 8 option in the combo box, obtained after right-clicking the icon and selecting Properties/Compatibility. As a result, I am unable to sync my devices. If I uninstall iTunes before re-installing, will this affect my iTunes libraries? Does anyone have any suggestions?
After going by elimination to isolate if the problem was from (1) iTunes app, (2) my computer or (3) my old iPhone 4G, I figured out what my problem was.
1) First I deleted & reinstalled iTunes on my Windows PC without succes, my playlist did not changed on my iPhone.
2) I tested a successful #sync from the iMac at work.
So my conclusion is: The hard drive on my Windows PC is full and that is affecting iTunes SYNC functionalities.
So I'll do a back-up then run a "Clean Install" of my Windows OS, hoping that it will fix my SYNC problems. -

Submit button in Compressor disabled after update Pro Applications Update 2010-02
Dear all,
I recently bought FCS and the whole software works fine after installation. However, I had to use Compressor over the last couple of days and the submit button was completely disabled and in the cluster field the option this computer had dissapeard. I checked this forum for a solution and found it. It seems that the problem was Qmaster. After reinstalling both Qmaster and Compressor everything works again. I have use the following set of instructions:

The problem is that now each time I do a software update, I am asked to install the Pro Applications Update 2010-02. After installing this update, the problem occurs again (the submit button is grayed/greyed out). It seems that in my computer the update creates a problem.
Does anyone have the same issue and if so, what suggestion you recommend?. At the moment I am avoiding the update, but I may me missing important bug and other fixes.

OliverI have experimented a bit and got the problem sorted. Iuninstalled FCS using the uninstaller from http://www.digitalrebellion.com/fcsremover/.Before installing the whole suite again, I realised there was and additionalApple Qmaster package in the Applications folder. I deleted this file and emptythe trash. Then did a fresh installation of FCS, performed an update andinstalled Pro Applications Update 2010-02.
And now all is up and running workingperfectly.
