Text input boxes

How can I make text input boxes in a JApplet so I can specify there location. I want to make input boxes in certain locations on the applet.

Do you know about layout managers? If not:
http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/uiswing/layout/using.html
If you for some reason don't trust a layout manager to do the job for you, you can specify where you want to put things yourself by doing something like this:
JApplet applet = ...
applet.getContentPane().setLayout(null);  // Do not use a Layout Manager (generally a Bad Idea)
JTextField input = new JTextField();
input.setBounds(50, 75, 25, 100);  // Sets the position and size of your textfield
applet.getContentPane().add(input);This is generally not recommended though, because different screen resolutions, cross-platform issues, any other things, might screw things up for you.
ps.
A little advice: try to be a little more patient the next time. You shouldn't start flaming the forum just because no one happens to answer your question within an hour . The people here are under no obligation whatsoever to help you -- they do it of their own free will in their own spare time.

  • Conditional for a text input box NOT being null? Sorry for asking so many questions!

    Okay, here's the situation. I'm creating a simulation of a form on which there are several text input boxes, 7 of which are mandatory fields. I know I can use a conditional to check whether the box has nothing in it by creating a null variable with no value and doing "if [box variable] is equal to [null variable] then", but the problem is that the validation captions I need to show need to be shown in order, that is to say that the caption for entering a value for the first box will always be shown if that box is null regardless of the contents of other boxes, the second will be shown if that one is null and the first one isn't etc.
    When I was investigating this I noticed a post by Lilybiri saying that comparison with a null variable doesn't work for "not equal to" so I'm having a hard time figuring out how to show the captions based on priority. For example, to show the second caption I need to not only check whether the second box variable is null, but also whether the first one isn't.
    It gets pretty crazy further along the line where I get to the 7th mandatory field and need to check whether the first, second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth boxes are NOT null and whether the 7th one IS. Help!
    I did come up with one potential solution to this prior to posting: if I set a different advanced action for each input box losing focus which checks whether the variable is null and if so sets a "flag" variable to 0, and in the else set it to 1, I imagine I can then replace the "not equal to" with a check to that flag variable being equal to 1 (which means there is text in the box). I think this will work but I thought I'd check to see if there's an easier way first.

    No it DOESN'T require everything to be on one slide.  It just has to LOOK as if that's what it is.
    I would suggest that it doesn't really matter how many Captivate slides are involved in the final solution, as long as it works the same way (or as close as possible) to the original software that you are simulating.  Your users don't frankly know or care how you achieved the simulation.  I guarantee they won't be thinking of you or Captivate.
    In my experience, you can make creating elearning a lot more difficult than it needs to be in Captivate by trying to rebuild the app, rather than just simulating how it works. For example, thinking that if everything happened on one web page or screen in the app then it must also happen on a single slide in Captivate.  The fact of the matter is IT DOESN'T need to work this way.  And in some cases it might even be impossible to reproduce in Captivate this way.
    So the quickest path to a solution is often to use multiple slides, which has the advantage of allowing you to "fix" certain things on screen (e.g. the contents of fields already visited) by using READ ONLY variable output in transparent captions, focusing only on one element of the interface that the user can interact with on that slide.  It doesn't necessarily prevent you from moving back and forth between elements, just as you can in the original app.  But it is far easier to create and maintain.
    I'm not saying you wouldn't be able to pull this off on one slide in Captivate, but it is going to require a LOT of variables and Advanced Actions to build and debug.  So the term Rapid Elearning becomes something of a misnomer if it takes you a long time to complete one slide.

  • Text input box for displaying notes

    How can I use a text input box so delegates can write notes in which then appear on other pages as they work through the course.
    Ken

    It seems you would be able to do this with user variables, in which you store the content retrieved from the Text Entry Box. Later on (other slides) you can use this content by adding it to a Text Caption. Beware: I'm not sure about the amount of characters that can be stored.

  • Text input box to show in another text field

    Hello,
    I have a text input box (Text1) showing during a certain label on the stage.  On another label there is another text field (Text2) that is not input-able.  This second text field (Text2) should show whatever the user has inputted in the first text input field (Text1).
    Both of these elements are not symbols and right now they are both text elements.
    Does anyone know how to do this?
    Thanks,
    ~iana~

    I believe the inputField is set accordingly.  And including your reply, here's what I've got on my stage:
    sym.$("Name").attr('contentEditable', true);
    var inputValue = sym.$("Name").value;
    // other text
    sym.$("Signature").html(inputValue);
    Thus far, this does not work. "Name" field is Text1 (inputField) and the "Signature" is Text2 (text box)
    I'm new to all this so I've prob got something wrong...do you know what I should adjust?

  • Text input boxes same colour as background - so "invisible", and button text or buttons often missingt

    I have turned off all addons/extensions/plugins - still the same problem:
    1: Text input boxes appear to be the same colour as the background - and hence "invisible"
    2: Clickable buttons on websites are often invisible, or if they display have no text; e.g. button to right of google search ("go" button?) is seen as a plain box with no text - although button is clickable.
    3: Google webpage usually has an image - this is missing, and merely has "UK" to the top left of the input box.
    4: On this page for example I can see directly above this text box two vertical black lines - it appears to be a button with a pop-up "insert a link" - it can obviously be clicked when I mouse over it.

  • Captivate 5.5 Text input box problem

    Hi all
    I have created a software simulation which has a really annoying intermitent issue.
    There are a number of validated TEBs throughout the project with the enter key set as the shortcut to go to the next slide..
    My issue is that Captivate randomly chooses to ignore that enter has been pressed.. I have looked everwhere online and cannot find a solution to this issue.
    I have also spoken to Adobe who claim they are not aware of any issue and it is fine at their end when trying to replicate.. I have sent them an example project so that they can see this bug in action.
    Has anyone else come across this, and if so has any one come up with any work arounds?
    I have also tried setting a button to transparent (it's shortcut as enter) but to no avail.
    Please help!!!!
    Noel

    Hi Noel
    I'll probably move this discussion over into the Captivate forums area after I reply. So heads up on that.
    It's been the source of frustration for many Captivate users. Some claim that it requires pressing the Enter key "harder" to make it work. Personally, I think the "harder" keypress is just voodoo and preposterous, as keyboards on computers are simply mechanical switches. My own view is that it's more related to timing than anything else.
    I might suggest that you complete a Wish Form/Bug Report to alert Adobe about it. The more of these folks create about the same issue, the higher the priority is assigned to that issue.
    Cheers... Rick

    I have Text input box for the user to enter the heading for a new record in NewRecord form.
    Like:
    <mx:TextInput text="Enter Subject Here"/>
    and then it is saved in the Database...
    I have another form called ChangeRecord so that the user can change the heading or Subject..
    How do i populate the name already in DB in the TextInput Box above... There is no dataProvider pram in TextInput...
    I have the following:
    CODE
    [Bindable] public var NR:ArrayCollection;
    private function resultNR(event:ResultEvent):void{
               NR:ArrayCollection(event.result);
    <mx:TextInput text="Enter Subject Here"/>

  • Text input immediate feedback

    Hi all,
    I have a couple of text input boxes on my slide that have
    correct answers
    assigned to them. The correct answers are all single digit
    numbers (it's a
    Sudoku game). I would like the Success and Failure captions
    to appear as
    soon as they type that single digit. Right now, they have to
    press Enter to
    see if their entry is correct, which seems tedious.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.

  • AppleScript input box issue

    I created an AppleScript on my Mac Pro and the text input box never shows up! I've tried other samples and it never shows up, I tested the same script on my MBP and it works fine. This looks like a stretched circle with a down arrow. Here is a screenshot of the box...
    Any ideas why this is happening?
    Thanks

    Hello
    AppleScript applet shell under 10.10 is reportedly broken in such a way that you cannot input CJK text in answer field of "display dialog" command when the script is run as applet.
    Temporary workaround would be to tell application other than applet itself to display dialog such as:
    tell application "System Events"
        activate
        display dialog "Enter text" default answer ""
    end tell
    And let Apple fix this situation:

  • Simulation input box auto advance?

    I'm building a simulation and have a couple of questions:
    1) I have an input box where the user needs to enter text. If that text entered is correctly, the timeline will continue without the user having to press Enter.
    How is this possible?
    2) I have slides where the instructions call for the user to press enter to advance to the next slide. In Flash you can set up an event listener to listen to see if the Enter key is pressed.
    How would you do this in Captivate? The only way I've found is to add a text input box with a shortcut for Enter.
    Thanks in advance,
    Dan

    I think the issue here is that Captivate is an event-based application.  So there has to be some event triggered to which actions can then respond.
    You want there to be an event that is triggered as soon as the user enters the correct username in the field, without there being any other user interaction whatsoever.  If that's the way your software application is really set up to work at log on, it would be very unusual.  I'm not saying your app DOESN'T really work that way, because I know of some web apps using AJAX etc that are doing calls all the time to the server to check the current username or password, but it would be highly unusal break most of the user interaction models that people have grown up with in typical computer usage.
    Normally, after the user enters data into the username or password field, there is ALWAYS at least another button or key that they press to trigger the evaluation of username and password combination.  Captivate's interactive objects such as text boxes and buttons always assume this is the way things are going to work. They expect another user interaction of some kind. A keypress or a click.
    So trying to replicate the exact behaviour you describe requires that Captivate triggers an event based solely on the correct combination of letters in the text box field.  At the moment that sounds like some kind of special version of the text box widget to me.  I don't see any way to do it with standard Captivate functionality,
    Hope someone can prove me wrong.

  • Mac text input doesn´t work at all

    Hi,
    I have a form with several text input boxes that don´t work at all when i publish the .Fla file via Flash CS4 10.0.2 on Mac OS X 10.5.8.
    I can select them but when i try to write nothing happens as you can test at (Work in progress): www.serverprovider.com.pt/Valentine  ,clicking the button at the footer "solicitar catálogo".
    This issue doesn´t exist if i publish the .Fla file in a PC, wich i´m trying to avoid because i don´t want to change the fonts in the intire website.
    Already read other posts on the forum, tried the "auto kern" solution (static text>deselect auto kern>tranform to input text), but nothing happens.
    Thank´s in advance,
    Ricardo

    Hi again,
    Already solved the problem.
    Because my original file was being published in diferent OS´s (Vista, Mac OSX, Windows 7), i´ve decided to create a new empty .Fla file. After that inserted (copy paste) the content of the older one and then changed the font (from Helvetica Neue to Arial) in the text input fields.
    Don´t ask me why, but my problem was solved this way.
    Hope it helps you.

  • Text Entry Box--Advanced Actions--Conditional Statement--Double quotes in literal input value

    Hello forums,
    I'm new to the forums (and Captivate in general), but I'm having a real problem carrying out a tutorial design and I think you may be my only hope.  Let me explain what I want to do and the difficulty that I'm having:
    I'm an instruction librarian at a university, and I'm designing an interactive tutorial for English 100 students to complete in order to become familiar with how to search the library catalog.  What I've done is taken a screenshot of the catalog search page, made it the background of a slide in Captivate (vers. 6), and placed a text entry box over the search bar in the screenshot.  The idea is for the students to conduct a simulated search by choosing one of three suggested search string formulations, and depending on the search string they enter, the tutorial will jump to a slide featuring a screenshot of what the actual search results would look like.  The idea is to emphasize the use of keywords over full-sentence phrases, and the use of double quotation marks to enclose multi-word search terms.
    So I've set the action for the TEB to "Execute Advanced Actions" and then created some IF/THEN statements in the "Advanced Actions" pop-up window (with action type set to 'conditional'). The script is such that if the student enters the first search option (how does sleep affect college students) in the TEB, the tutorial jumps to 1 slide, if they enter the second option (college students AND sleep), featuring a Boolean operator (AND), the tutorial jumps to a 2nd slide, and if they enter the third option ("college students" AND sleep) with the double quotes around "college students" and the Boolean operator, the tutorial should jump to a 3rd slide.  This action script works fine for the first two input options, but I can't make it work for the third search option.
    I think that it has something to do with the fact that the third input option features double quote marks, and this seems to throw off the script (I tried a quote-less input value for the third IF/THEN just to make sure that it would work jumping to the 3rd slide and it did), and I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions as to how I can get around this issue.  Again, I need it to work so that if the student enters "college students" AND sleep, with the quote marks and the Boolean operator, the tutorial will jump to a slide showing the search results if those search terms were used in a real search of the catalog.
    I'd be extremely grateful for any help that anyone here can give me, we've been trying to make our online tutorials more engaging and interactive (and therefore more interesting), and I think this would be a great way to teach students about using quotes in their catalog searches.
    Thank you for your time and consideration.
    Andrew Wilk
    College Library
    UW-Madison

    The tutorial is for a "how to use catalog searching" instruction in an undergraduate library session.  We use boolean operators (AND, OR, NOT) to combine search terms, ex. to search for books about the sleeping habits of college students, I would enter "college students AND sleep."  Because "college students" is a multi-word phrase to describe one concept, I need to put quotation marks around the phrase to prevent the catalog from searching for the individual words separately, so the most correct search becomes ["college students" AND sleep] with quotation marks around only "college students," a user-typed "AND," and the word "sleep" (no q-marks).
    A colleague of mine worked out a pretty cool (if complicated) solution that I'll share if anyone is interested.  Since the q-marks where the problem, we've set it up so that the TEB validates the response for the search string with q-marks around "college students." If they enter it correctly, the tutorial jumps to the corresponding slide. The attempt # is set to 1, and if the user fails to enter the validated phrase (they misspell or use one of the other response options) then the TEB is set to run an Advanced Actions Script in which the other two options are scripted in IF/THEN statements that cause, when the term is entered correctly, the tutorial to jump to their corresponding slides. We've created another tab of IF/THEN statements that say that if the response is NOT equal to one of these response options, then the slide restarts (technically the slide "jumps" back to itself and starts over) and the user gets another chance to start the cycle over again.
    I know this is confusing (I had a really hard time explaining it in words), so if anyone is interested I could make a Jing video when I have some time.
    Thank you for all your suggestions

  • Text entry boxes in CP6 - Enter key to validate input does not work in Safari?

    I'm using Captivate 6 to create a step by step walkthrough of some different processes that are commonly completed in my workplace. Some of the example processes have portions where text is entered to simulate a process the end user might need.  I have text entry boxes in these slides that require validation of the input to move along, with Enter used as a shortcut key. This works great in Firefox, Chrome and IE all the way down to 8....but if the course is run in Safari, the enter key does nothing.  Is this a known issue?
    Additional info: For many of these text entry boxes, the point is that it is a search field that has a little binoculars icon next to it that executes the search in the actual software we are simulating. For these slides I actually have the submit button associated with the text box made invisible (no fill, no stroke) and placed on top of the binoculars icon. This is an acceptable method of doing the task we're demonstrating, and just so happens to be a workaround for the enter key not working in Safari. However, a few places we have text entry that doesn't have the search/binocular icon next to it because there is a different goal on that section of the software we're visualizing. In those cases, there is no place for me to put an invisible submit button, and I can't make the submit button visible because that's not how the software we're demonstrating would work (thus defeating the purpose of the training).

    Sorry, this is a known bug with no fix available yet, but the makers of SwiftKey are aware of it and we will work with them to fix it: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=617298
    For now, the only solution is to use a different keyboard when using Firefox.

    how to set the default text in an input box or a label to be a predefine, multiline text. In other words how to break the line in the code of a text box.
    thank you

    There are a couple of ways of doing this:
    If you're editing on the canvas, press Shift + Enter.
    If you're working in Express View (see lower right hand corner of Project Siena), you'll need to copy a hard return from another app such as Notepad.
    I believe a better implementation of hard returns are in the list of requested functionality that you can find here:
