Text missing from PDF

I am a long-time and very experienced user of FrameMaker, Acrobat, and all associated tools. My XP-SP2 system is thoroughly debugged and fully updated.
When I create PDFs in Frame, sections of the text come up missing. The document remains correctly formatted and organized - there are simply missing sentences, paragraphs, etc. in no discernible pattern. I have tried every fix I can think of and all those I have found by searching online - to no avail.
These documents are created from scratch in Frame 7.2p158; I have updated the installation at least once without solving the problem. The PDFs are being created by every known process: print to Distiller (7.0) within Frame; Save As PDF; print to generic PostScript and pass to Distiller. The missing text remains consistent within all processes.
The fonts involved range from junk of unknown origin to (most of my fonts) true Adobe Postscript. Changing fonts does not cure the problem, although it sometimes changes which parts disappear. There is no particularly complex formatting involved (no equations, no unusual character overrides). These documents are mostly contracts and other simple but rigidly formatted documents. None involve imported graphics.
I have tried all variations of saving to MIF and RTF and re-importing. This sometimes changes the faults, but does not cure them.
This problem occurs ONLY with FrameMaker. I can export perfect PDFs, some from very complex source documents, from Word, InDesign, CorelDRAW and a dozen other tools, using any fonts on my system.
(I am dismayed at how hard Adobe support has gotten to use - as the owner of nine of their most expensive apps, I should be able to get better online support without calling in and begging permission!)
If anyone can point me to a known bug, a known fix, or a good starting point for unraveling this problem - or confirm that they've seen a similar error - I would appreciate it!

Sherman - I've tried every possible path from FrameMaker document to PDF, including hand-cranked processes using a variety of PS print drivers and reducing the resolutions to dot-matrix levels. The fix is very hit-or-miss.
Bernd - your situation is similar to mine. I finally got my critical document to print by using a different PS driver (a Xerox RIP, can't recall exactly which model at this moment.) Then I went to print out a companion document a few days later... same round of problems that I could not fix.
So I went to reinstall Frame 6 on my system... and ran into the "too much memory" problem. I reset the virtual memory down to ridiculous levels (100 MB) and still got errors.
So - I installed Frame 6 on my new system, a dual-Opteron monster with not 2GB, but 4GB of RAM. Perhaps it's the better memory management of that system (with Windows XP64) but I had no problem and printed the document (via print to PS and manual processing to PDF) just fine.
Then I zipped up the Frame 6 installation and dumped it on the older system, where it works fine except for the persistent registry warnings - which I'll fix when I have a moment. However, THE SAME DOCUMENT, when saved from Frame 7.2 into v6 format, and opened in Frame 6, caused the same missing-text problems through several approaches.
I might be stating the obvious, but this is a major, major bug and it lies wholly within Adobe's product circle. It should not have existed with the final release or at least should have been fixed early on... yet here we are more than a year into it with no fix in sight (except a crappy, half-effective workaround).
And I have discovered, to my frustration and dismay, that InDesign makes a very poor substitute for Frame when doing long documents. Part of it was unfamiliarity with things like flowing text over multiple pages, but after an hour's work I still had nothing that looked like my relatively simple Frame document... and I had to spend two hours on the above process to get the stupid thing to PDF so I could get it to the client.
I realize FrameMaker is a minor product and an unwanted stepchild, without the glitz, glamor and recognition of Photoshop or Premiere, but really, Adobe... this clusterf*ck is beneath you!

  • Text missing from PDF created in Excel

    I have been creating a pdf file from an Excel spreadsheet for many weeks but last week the pdf file suddenly stopped displaying text in one corner of the screen:
    But the missing text does display in Print Preview:
    The font is consistent across the whole document and I cannot find any reason why this text will not display in that corner of the pdf.
    Does anybody have any idea what is causing this and how to fix it?

    The problem is actually caused by the following update for excel which was rolled out on Dec 14, 2011.
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2596596
    Here is some more discussion about it:
    http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/nl/exceldev/thread/dec1c975-16b1-4b42-af44-a019740 bc910
    The hotfix should be coming soon, but for now you can simply uninstall update KB2596596

  • Aperture 3 save PDF to folder as JPEG option missing from PDF services?

    I have Aperture 3 downloaded from the App store in a MAC OSX 10.6.7 but the save PDF to folder as jPEG option is missing from the print menu? I do not have discs to re-install Aperture so can I add a workflow directly to the PDF services library and if so where can I get a copy of this workflow?

    Hi frank, thanks for the advice, I am very new to Apple and Aperture. I think I am looking at the second print menu, I am basically trying to add text to a phot and have followed this online guide
    http://photo.rwboyer.com/2010/02/07/aperture-book-tool-screen-cast-take-two/
    I can do everything except the last part which is save PDF to folder as JPEG. My version of aperture does not give me this option and I only have access to the following:
    Open PDF in preview
    Save as PDF
    Save as Post Script
    Mail PDF
    Save as PDF-X
    Save PDF to iPhoto
    Save PDF to web receipts folder
    Pictures
    Edit Menu
    There is no option to Save PDF to folder as JPEG and I cannot add this function from the Edit menu? Previous discussions suggest re-installing Aperture 3 but I downloaded this from the App store so do not have discs to reinstall?
    Thanks

  • Characters missing from .pdf the number #1 missing

    I have invoices vendor emails me in .pdf. When I open them in google docs all of the #1 are missing? I download and save them from mail, open in Apple Preview still missing all of the #1? Open in Adobe Reader and looks perfect all of the #1 are there, so then I print to my brother printer and all of the #1 are missing from the printed document? If I use Apple mail, same thing no #1.
    Of course when I contact the vendor and explain the problem, I am told "oh apple, well that is the reason. We use PC".

    I see this is an old post... but perhaps this is still helpful.
    I was having a similar problem with disappearing characters on documents sent to me from a certain company.  Just like you, Preview left out certain characters, Adobe Reader displayed it correctly but didn't print it correctly.  Then I noticed the Advanced option in the Adobe Reader print dialog:  "Print As Image".  That worked.
    I think that this forces Adobe to actually compose the page and send the composed page to the Mac printing system, rather than just sending PDF through to the Mac printing system.  A little slower, it seemed, but better than garbage.

  • Created PDF from MS Access - lines are missing from PDF

    I'm using Acrobat 8 (from Adobe CS3) to create PDF files.  When I "print" reports from Microsoft Access 2003, the thin line borders that outline cells are often missing from the PDF. Typically, 1 or 2 of the sides are missing, with the other sides appearing normally.
    This appears to happen primarily when the line thickness is set to "hairline".
    If I use a non-Adobe PDF writer (PDF Creator), then the lines appear normally.
    Any suggestions about what I can do to correct this?
    Thanks - Jim

    These are the settings.

  • Text missing from user notification email

    I set up a form and embedded it on our web site. For every completed form I received an email containing all the text submitted.
    The users also received a notification email, but some of the text was missing from the responses. It appears that only the text that was visible in the box on the screen gets sent to the user.
    Is this a known bug?
    Mike

    Hi Mike,
    This is the first time we've heard about something like this. I'd like to investigate. Would it be possible for you to forward a copy of an email sent to you as well as the corresponding email sent to the user? Also, if you could include the URL to your form that would also help.
    You can email me directly at [email protected]
    Thanks,
    Shannon

  • Text missing from vertical view- Ibooks Author product

    I made a book in ibooks author.  In the horizontal view, it looks perfect.  In the vertical view, large chunks of text are missing from the book semi at-random.   If I attempt to insert the missing chunks of text into the vertical view, then when I switch back over to the horizontal view, I just get repetition where the text shows up twice.   That means it is impossible to make the book look good both horizontally & vertically.  Any idea how to solve?

    Remember, layout in landscape and edit content in portrait.
    Check in both.
    If you like, you can disable Portrait in the Inspector.

  • Text missing from menus and icons

    Can anyone help? All the text is missing from my Mac Mini! Every menu in every application and on every icon: there is simply no text. My computer is completely unusable!

    Hi.
    Try booting into Safe Mode, by holding the Shift key at startup (right after the chime, and until the gray screen with the spinning gear). It will clear the system fonts cache, and run the fsck command (repair the boot volume).
    Good Luck.

  • Hyperlinks missing from PDF when using Adobe Printer.

    Hi,
    I am not sure if this is in the correct spot or not. I have a group of users that are ALL experiencing the same problem. When they generate the PDF of their work using the Adobe Printer, ALL of the Hyperlinks in the document are gone (the text remains). This has been working up until August 20th of 2014. They are using Word 2010, and Framemaker 9 to create the source, and Acrobat Professional 8 for the generation of the PDF. I have used Libre Office Write to test it with and I get the same result, however if I go in to Acrobat and create a document and add a hyperlink it will work.
    Anyone have any thoughts as to what is wrong?
    Thanks
    --Mike

    Let us get a few items out of the way first.  How and what does the PDF generation:
    - The Adobe PDF Printer doesn't generate links EXCEPT in a very special case where the PostScript file has special markup embedded in it called PDFMARK.
    - Both Adobe Acrobat and Adobe Reader have a preference that will read the text of a PDF file and dynamically create hyperlinks from that text that are clickable. This preference can also be turned off.  Check it to make sure that for some silly reason this hasn't happened on your users machines.
    - Microsoft Word has a Ribbon at the top called "Acrobat".  Use this Ribbon and the Create PDF button in it to create PDF files with hyperlinks
    - Microsoft Word also has the option of Saving as PDF with a Microsoft Addin that has nothing to do with Adobe.  It's somewhat functional in the hyperlinks department but Acrobat's Ribbon is much more fully featured.
    - FrameMaker is a bit different because it actually uses that special markup language I mentioned previously called PDFMARK and then runs it through the Adobe Acrobat PDF Add-on (a.k.a Adobe Acrobat Distiller).
    - Libre Office uses it's own mechanisms to create PDF if I remember correctly.
    My Thoughts:
    Figure out what process your users have been using if it is not a documented process.  Document that process.  Train your users as they come to the job on exactly how you want the PDF files generated.

  • Why are some text missing from the right side of a page I send to my printer?  Thanks

    Why is some of the text missing on the right side of a page I send to my printer?

    I came across something similar recently where it printed the left hand side only!
    If I want to print an email, instead of File > Print  ( does not print properly ) I click on the print icon on my email webpage ( do not use applemail and access gmail direct) which then takes me to print preview showing the complete email which prints ok.
    Some webpages ( File>Print) do not print properly and some do. Those that do not generally have their own printer icon (path) that needs to be clicked on.
    Maybe something to do with encryption but don't know.
    Hope this helps in some way.

  • Text missing in PDF files

    I have been trying to print out a form from a local university for my daughter.
    http://www.wlv.ac.uk/PDF/uow-direct-app-home.pdf
    I am using Leopard 10.5.2 - but when I preview this form in finder, nearly all of the text is missing. If I try to print it to my non-postscript printer - again, all the text is missing. If I print it to my PostScript printer, then it prints.
    I notice the PDF has badly (i.e. none) embedded fonts, so Acrobat has to use the Substitute "Adobe Serif MM" font.
    Anyone else getting this problem with this PDF?
    Funnily (well, not so funny, when i recently switched to Mac as it's 'THE' platform for graphics - cough!) the PDF renders and prints fine on my XP machine.
    Steve

    OK... I think i may have a handle on this.
    As I use my Mac for design work, the only fonts I routinely have activated are the "must have" fonts in the /System/Library/Fonts directory.
    Everything else is removed, and activated via Font Agent pro.
    I think Preview has a problem when a PDF file does not have fonts properly embeded. I just activated all the standard fonts that Microsoft, and Apple plonk in ~/Library/Fonts and /Library/Fonts - including a copy of Palatino, and, hey presto - Quick view works again.
    However, this doesn't explain the text vanishing when printing from Acrobat itself to a non-postscript printer.

  • Text copied from PDF broken to one-word paragraphs

    I have MBP with 10.8.3 and CS5 Acrobat Pro 10.1.7. Whenever I copy&paste text from a PDF created in MS Word 2008 12.0.0. and paste it in InDesign or Mail, there's a line break after every word. Also, when I copy&paste text from a PDF that was created with ID 5.5, the text appears line-broken as per the layout - not as continuous block of copy as it should. The only way I know to get rid of this is to do find/replace in ID (find para marker and replace with space). Is there any fix for this? Thanks!

    You may be hoping for too much. The PDF doesn't know about your text flow, there is nothing in a PDF to distinguish a hard and soft return, and there is no clue what is a paragraph or not. (Well sometimes if it is tagged, but it usually isn't).
    So Acrobat has no way at all to know what is a continuous block of copy and what is a list of points.
    Bottom line: PDF is a lousy way to deliver text for reuse.

  • Text missing from returned form

    I created a PDF form in InDesign CS6 on a Macbook Pro. The form is quite complicated with many form fields, radio boxes, check boxes, a few required fields and an email submit button. It is used by our sales reps to fill out their customer information for each sale. They hit the email submit button and return the email to our business office, which receives the PDF form in whole (not just the data), and uses it to enter the information into a database. This has been going very smoothly for over a year.
    Rather suddenly a few weeks ago, the business office noticed that form fields in returned forms were acting strangely. Text was invisible until the field containing the text was clicked on. Then the text became visible.
    The business office was only aware that the text was missing because it was unusual for those particular form fields to be left empty, so they called the sales reps to question the empty fields and were told they had been filled in...once they knew the fields should have been filled, they clicked and voila!...they weren't really empty.
    The method used to create the tickets has not been changed in the past few weeks and no updates have been made to the computers that have been creating the tickets, so we believe we have eliminated errors there (but we're open to suggestions there, of course!)
    The PDFs are being filled out mostly on computers running Windows XP or above (none running Windows 8) and using Acrobat Reader 10 or 11. They are being opened in the business office on computers running Windows XP. The business office computers are running Acrobat Reader 11.
    If you have any thoughts or suggestions on what might be causing the issue of the disappearing text, I'd love to hear them!

    Hi Mead324,
    This is happening because your user filled the PDF form using MAC Preview. Ask them to fill and submit the form using Adobe Reader and Acrobat only then everything should work fine.

  • How to Extract Text coordinates from PDF

    Hi,
    can anyone tell me how to get coordinates in pdf document using VB or .NET, suppose if some text is written in pdf document then how can i get coordinates of that text. Its very Urgent.
    Thanks in Advance.

    I am trying to use the getPageNthWordQuads information to determine if a word on the page is within a region that I am interested in.
    I have a limited knowledge of javascript and have been looking up text manipulation functions and array manipulation functions in an attempt to figure out how to separate the values that are returned from the Quads routine. The Adobe documentation indicates that the Quads function returns an array, but when I try to access one of the values in the array, it gives me the entire contents of the array as though it is a string. If I use the .length function to try to determine the length of it, it tells me it is length of 1! I obviously am mis-handling this reference, but I have yet to find any specific examples that work with the quads array the way I am trying to work with it....
    Here is my code...I am running it against an open file in batch processing mode(maybe this has something to do with it)...
    var sourceDoc = this
    var tx1=492.5;
    var ty1=761.5;
    var tx4=563;
    var ty4=726.2;
    try {
    for (var j = 0; j < (this.numPages); j=j+2){
    var cnt=0;
    var rcvrnum="";
    cnt = sourceDoc.getPageNumWords(j);
    if (j == 0) {
    try {for (var i = 0; i < cnt; i++) {
    var quads = sourceDoc.getPageNthWordQuads(j,i);
    var x1 = quads[0];
    console.println("Page(" + j + "),Word(" + i + ") = " + sourceDoc.getPageNthWord({nPage: j, nWord: i}));
    console.println("Quads length is " + quads.length);
    console.println("X1 = " + x1);
    if ( x1 >= tx1 & x1 <= tx4 & y1 >= ty4 & y1 <= ty1 ) {
    console.println("Q1 is good");
    console.println("Page(" + j + "),Word(" + i + ") = " + sourceDoc.getPageNthWord({nPage: j, nWord: i}));
    } catch (e) { console.println("Aborted: " + e) };
    } catch (f) { console.println("Aborted: " + f) };
    I have tried several variations of the code above to try to extract my values so that I can compare them, but to no avail. The above code outputs to the console the following...
    Page(0),Word(0) = OTTO
    Quads length is 1
    X1 = 19.350006103515625,782.15087890625,126.51744079589844,782.15087890625,19.350006103515625, 721.5038452148438,126.51744079589844,721.5038452148438
    Page(0),Word(1) =
    Quads length is 1
    X1 = 125.17047119140625,782.15087890625,153.91525268554688,782.15087890625,125.17047119140625, 721.5038452148438,153.91525268554688,721.5038452148438
    and so on...
    x1 becomes the entire output from the array and yet I can not perform a simple split function on x1. If I try to split X1 into an array by splitting on the comma, I get the following error.
    Aborted: TypeError: x1.split is not a function
    Am I supposed to import some libraries or something?
    Thanks for any help....

  • Images Missing from PDF

    From RoboHelp > Printed Documentation > Generate Adobe PDF -  all images are missing in final output. In the Images Section, I have Embed in documents selected. Please advise a solution.

    I'm using RoboHelp 7.03.001 and Adobe Acrobat 9.0
    I tried your suggestion of generating the printed document in Word. The images still did not appear. I searched your site before I posted here, and I did not find the answer. Please advise. Thank you.
