Text Tool becomes Move Tool
I started learning Photoshop CS4 about a month ago. One of the first things I learned was to add text. Simple, fun. I am now trying to learn about layer masks. One of the exercises in one of my books is to open an image and then add text to it. (The idea is to then add a mask and 'hide' portions of the text behind portions of the image.) A really strange thing is happening when I try to add text. I highlight the image in the layers column. (Prior to adding any mask layers.) I then click the text tool. But when I click on the image (in the area where I want the text), the text tool 'becomes' a move tool. A text layer pops up and the words I'm trying to type on the image come out in the title area for the layer (in the layers column). I've tried everything I can think of to 'get' the text on the image but can't solve it. (And this has been a SIMPLE activity for a month!) Can anyone exlain what's going on? Thanks!

I tried 'committing' the text but it didn't seem to make any difference. (I checked the 'tick' symbol and still couldn't see anything on the image. The text layer, however, was 'titled' with the text I typed into the image.) Here's one thought . . . yesterday when I was having trouble I wondered if the font size was the problem. The font size was 48 when I clicked the text tool. I thought that was a reasonable size. In the course of trying to solve my problem (including resetting the text tool in the drop down menu) I resized the font to 300. Then I could just see it. I ended up with a font size of 400! I wonder if the text has always been there but it was so small in relationship to the size of my image, it couldn't be displayed. Is that possible?
It sounds as if your image resolution is so extreme that the text is not visible.
Look in Image > Image size and tell us the resolution

'Select' tool becomes 'hand' tool...?
I'm hitting some key wrong here. I'm trying to work with the 'select' tool, moving 'text' around over an animated map.
Somehow the 'select' tool becomes a 'hand' tool ... and then I find I can't move the clips on the timeline, I can't move the 'text' blocks to position them. It keeps happening, and then I can't unlock the pattern to have only the 'select' tool. It keeps bopping back to the 'hand' tool. Pray tell, what keystroke might I be doing wrong?I've seen that too. I think it's a bug because I know the shortcuts and I'm definitely not pushing the spacebar by accident. Sometimes the hand tool just shows up and won't go away from my experience at least.
It goes away, for me, after a restart. It's usually a good indicator of a much-needed break. -

Adjusting Text Height and Width using the Move Tool...
I have yet another question about using Type in PSE 5.0. I know you can adjust a particular types size by using the font drop down menu and clicking on any of the listed sizes or you can type in a custom size as well.
Is it though, ok to expand the Type/Text by selecting it with the Move tool and then enlarging it by using the selection handles located on the Box surrounding the text? I know you can do this, but I am wondering if you run the risk of creating a jagged look or pixalizing the text this way. The text is still vector based at this point, so I am thinking that it shouldn't be a problem, but wanted to know if it could look pixaly upon printing. I have found that I can sometimes get the text to look more the way I want using this method rather than just relying on changing the font size.
Thanks,
LeeI believe you can achieve this by using the Move Tool, clicking on any one of the resizing handles surrounding the Box which the Move Tool creates when you select an object using it, and then just drag the resizing handles to expand your text to your liking.
If you press on a corner handle and press the shift-key at the same time while you drag, you should maintain the aspect ratio of your text.
But that's what my original question is above. By expanding or contracting the text in this way, are you running the risk of things looking jagged and/or pixaly. Is it okay to expand/contract text using the Move Tool or you should you only adjust by setting the Font size.

I recently upgraded our iMac to Yosemite OS and now have a problem with Photoshop Elements 11: the move tool selects an image or text layer, but then I try to drag the selection somewhere else on the page and it snaps back to the original location, however the arrows will move it OK. Also I cannot drag the selection to another photo in the photo bin as before.

Need help getting 'move tool' to work in CS5
I cannot move an item just pasted into an image and on its own layer, by using the move tool. The move tool has become a hand and moves everything including the unselected layer below as well as the item on the layer above that I wanted to move independently of the layer below. Selecting 'transform' does not allow independent moving either, nor does it allow me to transform or change the size of the newly pasted object.
I'm told that 'I'm useing the wrong shortcut.' I'm not sure what that means.
I'm new to CS5 coming from CS3 where the tool at the top of the tools is the move tool and using the spacebar turns it into the hand tool. Right now, the move tool remains the hand tool without using the spacebar. It seems to be locked.
Can anyone help me straighten this out?
TIA,

Boilerplate-text:
Are Photoshop and OS fully updated?
As with all unexplainable Photoshop-problems you might try trashing the prefs (after making sure all customized presets like Actions, Patterns, Brushes etc. have been saved and making a note of the Preferences you’ve changed) by pressing command-alt-shift on starting the program or starting from a new user-account.
System Maintenance (repairing permissions, purging PRAM, running cron-scripts, cleaning caches, etc.) might also be beneficial, Onyx has been recommended for such tasks.
http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/system_disk_utilities/onyx.html
Weeding out bad fonts never seems to be a bad idea, either. (Validate your fonts in Font Book and remove the bad ones.)
If 3rd party plug-ins are installed try disabling them to verify if one of those may be responsible for the problem.
I've done all of the above except that instead of Onyx I use Cocktail. If I need to switch from Cocktail to Onyx please advise.
The behavior with the hand tool still persists. I am forced to go back to Photoshop CS3 at this point but will check back here for possible other answers, or maybe a future update or upgrade will fix the problem. It's hightly unusual for me to have any problems with Photoshop as I've been using it since the mid-1980's up to now with no problems.
Patience will win out.
Thanks to all,

I'm sorry but the move tool isn't working again. I have a blue background layer and a text layer. Neither of the layers are locked. When I'm on the background layer the handles on the move tool appear but they don't appear on the text layer. I need to resize the text layer,
If I understand you well you want a bigger or smaler Font (Letter Size) if so then go to Window and on the dropdown menu click on Character.
Noww double click on the T in the square in the layers palette and change whatever you want in the Character Palette.
Perhaps this is your problem: Go to the Move tool and then select the text layer (click on an empty space to the rigght of the T box. select or deselect "Show Transform Controls".in the Optios bar like John sayd. Hope this helps -
Preview.app make "move tool" default on PDFs
Hi,
I'd like to make the "move tool" the default when opening PDF files. I guess that most people do read those files instead of selecting text - I wonder why "select text" is the default.
I am also aware of this post:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=7881973
Is there any (even hidden) way to accomplish this?
Thanks.
StefanThat's because you're opening text documents, so it thinks you want the text tool. Try a jpg.
While it won't default to move, it won't default to text either. Move is only a ⌘-1.

Problem with move tool? (Win 7)
On Photoshop CS4 , everytime I select the move tool and decide to move an object among a layer , it moves the object off screen , making it difficult to bring it back to the canvas to move . I know it isn't jumping layers , because only the object inside of one layer i moved , but ... am I the only one that has this problem ? How do I fix it ?
It doesn't only have this problem with the move tool , but with the text tool , marquee tools , and the brush tool , as well . The text tool would jump off screen , the marquee tool would position the marquee somewhere other than where I clicked it to be , and the brush tool would sometimes jump out of the brush outline . Can someone help ?Standard questions:
Have you updated to version 11.0.1?
Have you updated your video drivers?
Is you video card compatible? See http://www.adobe.com/go/kb405711
Have you tried turning off OpenGL in preferences?
If the answer to all is yes, try resetting your preferences as described in the FAQ.
http://forums.adobe.com/thread/375776?tstart=0
You either have to physically delete (or rename) the preference files or, if using the Alt, Ctrl, and Shift method, be sure that you get a confirmation dialog.
This resets all settings in Photoshop to factory defaults.
A complete uninstall/re-install will not affect the preferences and a corrupt file there may be causing the problem. -

Is their a fix for photoshop elements 11 move tool? Not working with Yosemite OS upgrade.
Hi,
We sincerely apologize for the problem customers are facing while using a trackpad with Photoshop Elements 11 & 12 on Mac OSX 10.10 (Yosemite).
We have been actively working with Apple to resolve this problem as quickly as possible. We're hopeful this will get completely resolved in an upcoming update of Yosemite(MAC 10.10).
In the meanwhile, you have two options to work around this problem:
1. Option1: Use a mouse instead of the trackpad
2. Option2: Install a plug-in which should workaround the problem
Plug-in installation instructions:
1. Close Photoshop Elements
2. Download this zip file to a location you can easily find (e.g. your desktop)
3. Unzip the file, WhiteWindowWorkaround.plugin, and move it to the Plug-In folder:
• For Elements 12 – //Applications/Adobe Photoshop Elements 12/Support Files/Plug-Ins/
• For Elements 11 - //Applications/Adobe Photoshop Elements 11/Support Files/Plug-Ins/
You can verify the plug-in is installed by launching the Photoshop Elements Editor and choosing Help > System Info... Scroll to the bottom of the text in the dialog and look for the plug-in name "WhiteWindowWorkaround.plugin".
Note: This plugin is a temporary workaround and should be used until this issue is addressed in Mac OSX 10.10 (Yosemite). Please remove this plugin once the issue is officially resolved by Apple.
If you are using a stylus in conjunction with a trackpad, you might see issues with your trackpad. Workaround in this particular case is to use mouse instead of the trackpad.
Hope this helps!

Could not use the move tool because no layers are selected.
This problem started a few days ago. I like to hold down the "Shift" key when moving a layer (either text or image) to keep the horizontal spacing locked. It was never a problem but a dialog box is now popping up with the following note: Could not use the move tool because no layers are selected.
There's no problem if I'm not holding the "Shift" key but I can't keep the layer from moving up or down. I could just use the arrow key but sometimes I need to move the layer quite a distance.
Also, I'm noticing that if I don't have the cursor directly on the type/image layer, regardless of whether the "Shift" key is selected, a rectangle similar to when the "Rectangular Marquee Tool" is used appears and the layer I had selected is no longer selected.
Any ideas as to why this might be happening? Thanks for the help.Sorry about that. I'm using Photoshop CS4. There are no layer masks and I'm working over a solid white background (although it's happening in all my files, some of which have multiple layers).
I'm mainly designing DVD sleeves, posters, invites, etc. The layers contain images, live text, vector smart objects, etc. and the problem is happening with all layers, regardless of what it is (text or image).
When I have the mouse directly over whatever it is I want to move and hold the shift key I get the "Could not use..." dialog box. When the mouse is NOT over the image/text, but I have the correct layer selected, I get the "Rectangular Marquee Tool" look, a "dashed" rectangular box wherever I've moved the mouse.
Hope the info is helpful and thanks for responding... -
Photoshop cc freezes - especially the move tool
I am trying to finishe several magazine ads and the move tool freezes constantly, stopping any hope of finishing these ads on deadline...HELP!!
Actually, this is a brand new computer, tons of memory, and yes, the graphic and video card are both new, high powered and up to date, Curt, just no sure what to do as it is unbearably frustrating. It is freezing when I try to move images or text, and the font is just plain old Century Gothic.

Move tool "Show transform controls" with a type layer
I just recently figured this "show transform controls" option with the Move Tool and while trying it out, I noticed it works differently with type layers than others.
On regular bitmap layers it moves, resizes and rotates as supposed, but with type layer it jumps to "free transform" -function when trying to do anything with the transform controls. Causing the tool to drop and the anchor points change place (from text outline to text box?).
Is this normal behaviour or is there something I don't get?Yes, being able to assign shortcuts to UI elements would be a major productivity jump in several cases! I tought that it
was the advantage of the object-oriented programming, but I my coding abilities stop at "20 go to 10"... -
The Move Tool ? Is it working right in this example? newbie question
I'm new to photoshop. I'm trying the 30 day trial. I am doing the 2nd lesson from the book, Adobe Photoshop CS4 by Adobe. Its the lesson with the "Pitch In" post card where you type some text on the picture with the horizontal text tool.(Lesson 01, "01B_Start.psd")
Then the book directs you to use the move tool to move the text to the sandy area of the picture. I followed each step meticulously, but after I move the text, it continues to be selected (quivering) and the original text stays where it was originally typed, leaving two separate lines of text.
The book shows in its example, the text *moves*. On my machine, it appears that it just copies the text rather than moves it. What am I doing wrong or is there something wrong with CS4 as I've read a lot of bad things about it being buggy.
RKThis is the WORST software program I've ever encountered!
It doesn't do anything the way the book describes.
Book next states on page 24:
"The text color in your image is the same as the foreground color.... You'll color the text by selecting it and then choosing another color.
1. In the Tools panel, select the Horizontal Type tool. [I did]
2. Drag the Horizontal Type tool across the text to select all the words. [It then shows a picture of hightlighted/selected text similiar to many other text editing software which you select in that fashion. I try it but it will not work.] It then states:
3. In the Color panel group, click the Swatches table to bring that panel forward.
4. Select any swatch. The color you select appears in three places: as the foreground color in the Tools panel, in the text color swatch in the option bar, and in the text you typed in the image window...
That's how easy it is to select a color in Photoshop. "
HA!! Easy my foot! Yeah, it'd be easy if the program worked!
NONE of that works! If you follow those steps, the text is not highlighted, but instead the horizontal text tool draws a text box! No way that I can find to select and highlight that text to change its color. And as I stated in previous post, the original text that I "moved" is still there - not moved, but copied! The text will not change color.
This program is krap! I'd be really ticked off if I had bought it. As it is I need to try to return the book I wasted $35 on!!
