* The Back Button : the Anti-Ajax [advice wanted]

I'm working on a group project that involves a flash-based
chat system for
the site's users not unlike MSN Messenger.
Right now, we have a pop-up containing the flash chat module,
and a 1px
hidden frame to keep a constant line to the server open. We'd
like to
consider using Ajax to, instead, pop a layer on top of the
website that
would contain the chat module, using something like this :
http://dynamicdrive.com/dynamicindex11/abox2.htm
This way, no more unnecessary hidden frame to keep the line
open with the
chat server, and no more pop-ups. 2 birds, 1 stone.
Naturally, the whole site would have to be ajax-based to do
this. Meaning,
clicking on various links to various pages would retain the
wrapper
everywhere, but change only the content area.
After discussing this possibility in a meeting, we walked
away with only 1
major hurdle to overcome : the back button. The back button
would break the
connection with the chat server.
Does anyone know of a work-around for this potential problem,
so that we may
go full-speed ahead with the idea? Or refer me to documents
treating this
specific problem that I may forward them to our programmers?
Thanks!

Anyone? :-(

  • I used to be able to go back multiple pages at once, by selecting what page I wanted to go to by the back button. Now I apparently don't have that option and can only go back one page at a time? Am I mistaken, and is there a way to do this?

I miss the old back button, when I could go back multiple pages at a time.

    You can also:
    *right-click the Back/Forward button for the drop-down
*add this extension to add the drop-marker to the Back/Forward button: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/backforward-dropmarker/

  • How to set a back button to the caller page

    Hello,
An application have a page that can be called by several other pages, for instance, an "addContact.faces" can be called by several other forms, when the user adds the contact or press a back button, the application should go back to the caller page.
    How can I implent this?
    Thanks in advance,
    Juan

As an alternative, you could Ajax the stuff and put it in a popup div, which is a common technique nowadays. Then the user doesn't even navigate away from the page he/she was on, plus it is relatively easy to implement in a generic way so multiple pages can use it.
Search for "css popup div" on google if you want to see this in action.

  • View State Animations & the Back button (on Android)

    Hello, everyone!
Is it possible to animate between view states when developing for mobile devices (like Android)?
And if so (and the bigger question for me), when you transition from one state to another, can you use the Back button on the Android device to transition back to a previous state?

    Hi, Jason,
First and foremost, thank you for your timely response, and for your well-received advice!
After reading the posts from the MAX Beta link your provided, it is my understanding that if you disable the default back button handling, that the button itself would no longer function in the application.
I still want to use the back button, but I want to add the back button's popView function to states as well as Views.
If I missed anything, please let me know.
    And thank you, once again!
PS-I don't know if this makes a huge difference, but I'm using the latest pre-released version of Flash Builder 4.5 with AIR 2.6 (released 2 weeks ago).

  • Why do google search results reset to match the search bar terms when i use the back button?

Since the update to FF 23, the list of Google search results clears and the on-page search box is reset to match the address bar search box when I hit the back button to re-view the results list after checking a result.
To see this issue for yourself, set your search provider to Google and make sure Instant is on. Type a search term into the search bar and press enter. A google page appears with your results list. Now, change your search terms or conduct a new search directly from the google page (without using the FF search bar). Click on the first result in the search list, then click the back button to return to the search results so you can check a differest result. As FF goes back to the google page, it will reset the on-page search box to match the FF search bar (although you were no longer on this search) and all search results will disappear, replaced by the message "Press enter to search". Pressing enter reconducts your old search, not the one you were on.
This is incredibly maddening since searching for something requires frequent use of the back button to check through the list of search results, and then frequently trying the search again with slightly different terms. Although it sounds like a Google issue, it did not occur on the old firefox and has me wanting to revert. I tried to revert to the old search function via the "keyword search" addon, but this did not fix my issue. Is there a way to force FF to go back to the actual google search page I was just on instead of conducting a new google search from the FF search box when I hit the back button?

In Firefox 23 versions and later the keyword.URL pref is no longer supported and it is no longer possible to specify the search engine for the location bar via the keyword.URL pref.<br />
The search engine that is used on the location bar and on the about:home page is the search engine that is selected in the search Bar on the Navigation Toolbar.<br />
Current Firefox versions do not update the about:home home page until you refresh the page (future versions will do this automatically without a refresh) and that is what happens if you use the Back key.
You can install the Keyword Search extension to specify with search engine to use for the location bar and which search engine to use for the about:home page via the Options/Preferences windows of this extension, accessible via the about:addons page.

  • The back button is there but never works. It didn't open in a new tab or window but the back button isn't functioning. I just downloaded Firefox 5.

Actually, all my details are in that looong question I asked. ; )
I am ready to go back to 3.6 or whatever version I had because 4 and 5 have had these issues. I tried 4 before but now that I have 5 and the same issue, I remember that I saw this before.
As I was typing this note, I looked up and saw the back button is actually working on this site. Weird.
Also, there isn't a button next to the back and forward so I can see my history. Where is that, now? Sometimes, I want to go back 3 or 4 pages at once without loading each page the slow way. Awww, what am I saying? You all know what I mean. :\
I am using Windows 7 and have been using Firefox for years, so I am familiar with it and it is my only browser of choice so I hope someone can help me. Thanks in advance.

Do you have that problem when running in the Firefox SafeMode? <br />

  • How do I use the back button to go back more than 1 step?

In previous versions of Firefox and common in other browsers is a small pull-down option on the back button that will allow the user to go back more than 1 step in browsing history.
Typically, the pulldown will show a chronological list of recent sites visited and the user could select one. Firefox 4 seems to have dropped that feature and you can only click it to go back 1 step at a time. I really miss that feature.
Is there a way to enable or add on the ability to go back more than one without having to go to history?

You can get the drop down list by either right-clicking on the back/forward buttons, or holding down the left button until the list appears.
If you want the drop-down arrow you can add it with the Back/forward dropmarker add-on - https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/backforward-dropmarker

  • Is there a way to control the "back button"?

i've got a simple animation intro, ending with the very last
key frame being static with links. then the links will bring up
another page in the same window. but i was wondering if there was a
way in flash to control the back button to bring the user to that
very last key-frame, at the end of all the animation. thereby
    skipping over the intro-animation.
    also:
i have an html intro page, where you can go to the flash
introduction, or the peoples' old website, or to a Flash-Player
download window. i was wondering if there was a way to create a
link to that end key-frame in order to by-pass the animated flash
    intro.
    thanks for your help

gotoAndPlay(32) if you have a continuos animation after that
frame and you want to continue it; the number within the brackets
is the number of the frame you want to go to. Or else if you want
    to go to a particular frame and stop there, gotoAndStop(32);

  • Why do i get redirected when I click on search link If I hit the back button and click on the link again It was allow me to go there

  • Clicking on the Back button in web browser does not take you back properly

When using Info View and drilling down through reports (using the InfoView Portal in the "View my documents" settings of User Preferences), if you have drilled down through several reports and then want to go back to the page you were viewing before you drilled down one more layer using the browsers BACK button takes you back a random number of pages - NOT back one page.
Is there a fix or workaround for this?
    Thanks

There are some big differences if using say a webi report.
I just tested on XIR2 SP4 and back forward worked fine with CR drilldown, using the sample reports.
Could be a report design issue or something wrong with your deployment, maybe even a browser setting (not sure as I don't work reporting issues too often).
You can wait to see if someone else has run into this or open a message with support to have an engineer take a look.

  • I hate the update of the bar. It has totally done away with being able to skip back several places in the browser; now I can only click the back button and go back one page at a time. I otherwise hate the new layout, too. How do I undo this?

I can't choose a specific page to skip back to but must click the back button over and over to get back to where I want to skip to. The little headings "most visited," "getting started," "Youtube," etc. have changed. They look more colorful, but I hate how the home button is clear over to the right side of the page, etc. What was wrong with the way everything was before? I HATE this new update, and I didn't even want it.

You can get the drop down list by either right-clicking on the back/forward buttons, or holding down the left button until the list appears.
If you want the drop-down arrow you can add it with the Back/forward dropmarker add-on - https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/backforward-dropmarker

  • The Back button only allows me to go back one page at a time instead of selecting a previous page from a drop-down list. This is a real problem: anyone have any ideas?

In the previous version of Firefox, I could go back to a previous webpage by clicking on a part of the Back button which brought up a list of recently visited sites, and by clicking one of these, could jump straight back to that page. This facility does not seem to be available in the latest Firefox, and the Back button only goes back one page at a time. This is really inconvenient, as,
it now takes longer to get to an earlier page
there is no visibility of previous pages visited
any actions carried out on webpages are undone when going back through them - this does not happen when jumping back several pages in one go.
This is a real problem as I used to the old system constantly, and cannot continue to use Firefox 4.0 unless there is a way around it.

For me, I have the same question, this is a poorly done upgrade and I want to go back to 3.6
