The battery shortage!!

I am a Macbook Pro user sine last year April. I am really concerned about the battery life. my laptop has lost its main function. i cannot use it without the charger plugged in! i am just a student and i mostly used it at home and didn't really use it without the charger. i don't think or i am sure that i didn't do anything that can shorten the battery life. now i need to pay 7500pesos which is about $170 to get a new battery (and they said i have to return the old one). and i know i should buy the protection plan to continue the warranty but how can a such a big company like Apple make a such a battery? the Apple center people here in the Philippines said that "I tried with a different battery and it works fine. therefore, i conclude that your battery is the problem. you can buy another battery for 7500pesos" how long he spent for checking the problem? 2seconds. i told him that the laptop doesn't turn on without the charger, and all he did was changing the battery and made a conclusion. considering how protective i was about my Macbbook Pro and that its not even 2years in fact 1year and 5months i think there is really big problem of what was made. i hope its just the battery and not other parts of the laptop. is it possible that i did something wrong in the OS and made the battery that way?

Apple doesn't make the batteries -- they are made by Sony. Sometimes Sony does a good job, sometimes they don't. Generally speaking, a laptop battery is expected to last about 2 years, but there's a pretty wide margin (90% last between 1.5 and 2.5 years).
The Apple claims that their batteries average 300 charge-discharge cycles. The most taxing on a battery is to have the battery drain part way, then recharge. Third-party vendors of batteries will tell you that using the computer plugged in with the battery will shorten its life -- yet this is how most people do it. The manual for the MacBook and MacBook Pro lines indicate that you should fully discharge and recharge your battery once a week to maintain it -- this maximizes the life of the battery.
If your battery is not charging properly, the Macbook, like other laptops, will only operate when connected to a power source. The battery itself may still have some charge, but the charger can detect if the battery is charging and holding that charge properly, and, if not, it will treat the battery as if it is not there.
You might be able to purchase a replacement battery by mail from elsewhere. For example "FastMac" sells replacements for $99 (plus shipping, of course) -- which is a good deal for any laptop battery.
I appreciate that you are upset about the batter dying, but it's only just barely on the short life of what one might expect.

  • How will I know it's time to replace the battery?

Fully charged, the battery has never had more than a 2 hour life in my 17" Powerbook G4.
Surgical history might be relevant. Last summer Applecare replaced a dead hard drive. Last week Applecare replaced the power input, the case and the keyboard after perplexing power supply problems -- no keyboard light, Airport card wouldn't work on battery power, Energysaver would give haywire readings and Powerbook would run out of battery suddenly, two power adapters were killed in two weeks. I reset the PMU before visiting Applecare to see if that fixed the problems. I wasn't convinced it did.
I've got 350 cycles on the battery. I've haven't calibrated the battery monthly on a schedule, but I've had no shortage of running it down to sleep and recharging.
Fully charged, the battery has never had more than a 2 hour life. That's with no peripherals attached and with the display set to automatically adjust to ambient light, energersaver set to normal, processor set to automatic.
Is that all?!? 2 hours? That's the price of a big screen?
One serious suggestion: read the Apple support doc, http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=75448 on the proper power cord for your portable. I harbor concerns that the wrong adapters are being sold to Powerbook users and that those adapters are a very bad thing for electronics. I have run through four adapters in the short 3 year life of this single Powerbook. They are fragile and unreliable.

There's more to it than that. CPU demands, drive demands, and wireless transmitters also place heavy burdens on the battery. I get a bit over 2 hours on a new battery, but when I go on a long plane trip, I can see the difference. On a long plane trip, the cabin is often darkened, so even the lowest backlight setting is plenty and so the screen uses much less battery. In addition, the airlines make you turn off the wireless, so having the AirPort and Bluetooth radios off also saves energy. Under those conditions, and if I set the CPU to Reduced and don't make it work too hard, yes I think I did see it exceed 4 hours once. But in day-to-day use, with the backlight turned up, wireless networking turned on, and the CPU grinding away at graphics and video and music and web page rendering, everybody gets about 2 to 2.5 hours.
It's just like gas mileage on your car. I would love it if I could always have the fantastic mileage I get by extended drives on the highway, but life isn't like that and in reality I don't come close to that figure because I have to drive around town stop-and-go.
AppleCare: Over 3 years, the value of covered repairs on this laptop exceeded the cost of AppleCare about 3 times over (US dollars), so it turned out to be a good deal for me, as it has always been.
When to replace your battery: Replace it when you can't stand it anymore, and that point is going to be different for different people. I think I waited until my battery was down to about 45 minutes. Below that it was hard to get any meaningful work done. Someone who regularly needs more than an hour of battery time would have gone for a new battery sooner.

  • Iphone 5 battery shortage after iOS 8

After upgrading to iOS 8 on my iPhone 5, my battery are draining much faster than before. In normal use, the phone completely charged used to take at least 48 hours to finish. Now in the same use it is taking about 24 hours to go from 100% to 0%. It means my battery is lasting 50% less than before. And if I use my iPhone continuously the battery lasts less than 12 hours.
I turned off all features like LTE, push updates, background updates, etc.
The iOS 8 new features does not compensate so power shortage, so I really regret to have updated...

I updated to ios 8 on my iphone 5. my phone used to last a couple to several days with the limit use I give it. 4 hours after updating to ios8 my phone was down to less than 8%. I recharged it and again the battery lasted around 4 hours on standby. I tried every posted solution even restoring to factory setting and reinstalling ios8. no change. contacted apple and the tech worked with me to go through the steps to install as new. no change. I can watch the battery drop one % every couple of min. Techs claims I need to send my phone in for repair. worked fine up until I upgraded to 8. I think the solution is to upgrade to droid. anyone want a couple of iphones and ipads. I give up.
IBM products never give me these problems.

  • Is there a way of stopping the battery from charging?

    Dear Apple Community,
Recently I installed iStat Menus and found that, over the course of this year, my Macbook's charging capacity has dropped 5%. I know this isn't a massive number, but battery performance has become a concern for me. I use my Macbook as a desktop replacement, on the main. It's sitting on a mStand, connected to a large monitor on my desk. I use my Macbook to play games, surf the internet, do work and all that good stuff - basically, I use it for everything. I rarely use the Macbook without it being plugged in. I read on the Apple website that they do not recommend leaving the Macbook on charge permanently and that I should use it on battery at least one a month. As I use my Macbook as a desktop replacement, I don't actually have a lot of opportunity to do this.
My question to you, the community, is: is there a way of stopping the battery from charging, either with the use of an app or a physical device? Ideally, I would love to have my power plugged in BUT only used when the battery drops below 10%. Is this possible with an app?
On the other hand, am I just worrying about nothing? Will my battery be damaged further if I leave the Macbook charging permanently?
    Thanks for your help!
    Jeremy Reid

The charging characteristics are handled in firmware.  There is no app that would be able to do this.  You actually would not want to do this anyway.  Regularly discharging your battery to 10% will greatly decrease the life of your battery.  While it is true that you should not use your system exclusively plugged in, allowing it to run on battery a few hours a week should be fine.  Letting the battery regularly run down to (or below) 10% will cause you to use up cycles more quickly than is necessary (thereby reducing the life of your battery).  It's really a only a matter of disconnecting your Magsafe connector once in a while.
Leaving it plugged in does not result in it being charged "permanently".  It will charge until it is full and then charging will stop.  It will only begin recharging when it reaches about 95%.

    No idea why.
What have you tried to solve?
Have you tried the basics from the manual?
    restart, reset, restore.
Have you tried removing the app, tehn adding it back?

When you "Restore from a Time Machine Backup.", the drive will be erased for you, but yes, won't hurt to:
Boot into Recovery (hold ⌘R on boot)
Utility->Disk Utility->Erase Macintosh HD, then Repair Macintosh HD
    Quit Disk Utility
Then Select: Restore from a Time Machine Backup.

  • 4 days old MBP 13". First boot up showed charge of 100%, next boot up showed battery fully charged but the percentage read 98% in the subsequent boot ups the battery is fully charged but percentage reads 96%. Whats wrong??

I recently purchased a 13" MacBook Pro. On my first boot up, the battery charged to 100%. I didn't operate this thing on the battery. The next time I booted this thing up, the battery was charged but the meter read 98%. In the subequent boot ups of this machine, and I still having not used the battery, my battery is fully charged but the meter now reads 96%. IS there some problem with the hardware or the software? Help is appreciated!!
    Thanks.

hey thank you for the info. Based on what happened, the battery has gone up to 100% just once when I booted this machine for the first time. On subsequent occasions the Battery Charged symbol has appreard at below 100% charging. I have been using my MacBook Pro for the whole day with outlet power and never did the battery go back to 100%. I hope I don't have to calibrate the battery on this model?

  • HEATING OF THE BATTERY AND PHONE

I am usig a nokia 6233 it gets heated up excessively when ever i put it on charging the whole phone and the battery gets heated up please any one do help me and say what to do ...

    Heating is natural during charging.
If you think it is heating excessively, you should have it checked at a Nokia service point. This is not an area you should get into yourself, it really needs to be looked at by a qualified engineer if there is a fault of this nature.

This is a major problem with Lollipop, but yo said it started 2 months ago.   Several people have fixed problem by removing FaceBook And Face book messenger and then re loading the apps again.   You might want to clear your cache before reloading.  Not sure this is your problem, but worth a try.  Good Luck

  • IPhone 3gs Battery Heating, iPhone does not start even after the battery replaced

    Hello
Last night my phone was plugged into the car charger and suddenly it went blank and turnned off itself. I Tried DFU'in it but nothing worked. I charged it but all it does is heats up. Today I replaced the battery and it sill wouldnt work. I cant turn it on at all!
Can some one please help me.
    URGENT!!
    Thanks

Extremely doubtful. Without being able to get the phone up and running, it's impossible to say for sure, but I'm guessing any data that was on the phone is long gone.
As for what could be the issue... at this stage, I'll have to go with an all encompassing "it's broke". You're probably going to either have to find a professional repair shop or just buy a new phone. Apple won't touch it at this stage since you opened it yourself.

  • Why is the battery life of my brand new Macbook Pro 15 inch only 3 hours 40 minutes on a full charge?

Only thing running on it is Chrome, and the battery life is only 3:38. Am I doing anything wrong?

It also depends upon what you are doing on Chrome.  Video and flash will eat up battery life.  You are probably doing nothing wrong.
You might open Activity Monitor and see what applications are taking a lot of CPU%.  Make certain that you have selected 'All Processes".
    Ciao.

  • A1281 is the battery i got for my 15inch MBP. Is the battery life only 2 - 3 hours for a new battery on this device.

A1281 is the battery i got for my 15inch MBP. Is the battery life only 2 - 3 hours for a new battery on this device.
    This is from Apple.
2 to 3 hours seems very low.
what is teh standard or advertised spec for a 15 inch Macbook Pro with this battery.
I would like to know so that i can return it if this is not normal.
Its expensive so comments would be appreciated.

I say it depends on your model? average usage is about 3-4 hours depending on what you use and how you use it. Adobe Flash player eats a lot of battery power so if you are on a web page and has flash player, likely that it's eating up battery because of it's power thirsty.
Also check your systems activity monitor. It could be possible that one of your program/apps did not close right and may be still running. So check for that and end the process if necessary.
If you have a backlight keyboard, in a broad daylight, it's not necessary to have it on.
I also suggest that you use it plugged in most of the time, and it's not going to hurt or damage the battery if you have it plugged in all the time. Only use on battery if you are going to places that has no access to the outlet. If you are at home, then keep it plugged in. Just keep in mind to fully drain the battery until it your MBP turns off on it's own. This is the calibration process so that you have the most accurate battery readings.
The standard for 2011 MBP is 7 hours on battery. Before that model is 10 hours, but i don't believe that previous models will last 10 hours. Last week I calibrated my battery readings from fully charged and it took 9 hours to completely drain out the battery (I have a 2011 model),
If you think it's not normal and that your battery doesn't meet your expectation then set up an appointment with the genius bar and have them test the battery. They will determine whether it is faulty or not.

  • I have an iPhone 4s just eight months, it is normal that the battery lasts only 3 hours? please help me thank you very much.

I have an iPhone 4s just eight months, it is normal that the battery lasts only 3 hours? please help me thank you very much.

Three hours if definitely NOT normal. I get at least 48 hours out my 2 year old iPhone 4S' battery with light usage. Did you do the iOS 7 update on the phone it self (OTA) or through iTunes? In my experience most problems are caused by the OTA updates. For this reason I ALWAYS update using iTunes on my computer.
I would suggest restoring your phone using iTunes on your computer and setting it us as a new phone. This downloads a fresh copy of iOS 7.1 from Apple and installs it on your phone. Just make sure that you transfer all purchased items (apps, music, etc.) as well as photos to your computer before restoring as the restore will completely wipe your phone. Do not restore from a back-up. Yes, you will loose all your data on the phone but restoring a back-up can restore the problem you are currently having back to your phone. Once your phone has been restored you can manually sync back your apps and music.
Before restoring you can also check to see that battery-killers like Location Services, Background App Refresh, etc are only turned on for the apps that really need it. I recently read and article that said that the Facebook app can be a real battery killer. If you have this app installed turn of location services and background app refresh for this app and see if that helps. Also go to Settings / General / Restrictions / Location Services / System Services and turn off all the options in that menu. Your phone does not need any of those to function. Constantly using your phone's GPS is a huge battery killer. I only have Location Services enabled for Find my iPhone and Background App Refresh is turned off completely.
    I hope this helps.
