  • The great thing

    Hello, friends!
I tell you what the main flaw in Java is: it is not functional.
I tell you functional and object oriented programming languages, like Scala, will be the next generation of programming languages.
I tell you what language will substitute Java: Scala (http://www.scala-lang.org/).
    Cheers!

I tell you what the main flaw in Java is: it is not functional.I think this is far from the greatest flaw in java.
The greatest flaw with java ( & programming languages in general) is that they do not do what we want them to do. Basically all bugs are a result of programs not being able to figure out what to do in states that we haven't accounted for.
Wouldn't it be great if there were not even a possibility of getting a NullPointerException?

  • Darn, I missed the Great iPod Giveaway when you buy an Apple Computer

I still have these questions and I will do my best to keep this real short. I had tried the iPod a long time ago but I broke all 3 of them and except for the first one, I have no idea what I did. I have the new iPod: Missing Manual (can't remember the exact name, but it was written by David Pogue, who really writes in a style that I relate to.) I still would like to use this technology for the numerous classes I teach and exercise classes I incorporate into my teaching too; and of course in my own personal life.
Besides being a bit ******** in this area of technology, I am hoping some people can offer me some help until I get the additional assistance that should be here any day. I saw the iPod Shuffle (I think it is called.) On the Apple Store home page, it is the one which looks like it is in the "landscape" position, has a larger display and shoot, I can't remember the name. Oh well, other than wanting some opinions on this one, I wanted to remember the name. I am putting together a new MacBook Pro and will purchase which ever music player I decide on--with your help of course!! Does this have a video monitor and the ability to take video recordings too? However, I no not need that function in the iPod I choose. I would like something that dos not look too "wild" as I walk in to class and introduce myself as the next music/dance instructor.
I have kind f learned more about iTunes 9, which I assume is how I will download and upload all of my music. I know with the first unit, I broke it because it aid t install the CD (or whatever it came in) to get the iPod ready and I guess the HD formatted for music. I really am not sure what it is I had to install but it turned out it was already installed and since I installed it again, and than tried to figure out what was wrong with it, I broke it.
Are there any recommendations with a good quality, great sounding (and I can afford extra earphones, if there are some that are far superior to the ones that come with the unit). I hope it has gotten a bit easier to understand because turning things and trying to remember where I put a genre or group of song types.
Anyway, without getting into all the boring details why I have not had very good luck with getting one of these amazing machines up and running and than remembering how to do it when I want to add some more tunes and keep it nice and tidy.
Thanks for your time, and I hope help. I really do appreciate any info that can help me one day master this very difficult task for me.

The iPod touch is a fantastic little toy, though the touch screen does take some getting used to. Is there anything in particular about using it that you're unsure about?
One great thing about the Touch is that it uses flash or solid state memory instead of a typical hard drive with many moving parts. That's one less thing that can go wrong!
If you're looking for headphones, the best ones I can recommend are by Bose (http://www.bose.com). I'm honestly not sure about earphones--I've just used the earphones that come with my iPods and have very little experience with anything else. You could take a look through the MacWorld website and check reviews there. Here's one set of reviews: http://www.macworld.com/products/ipod/headphones.html
As for speakers, if I would be purchasing them, I'd look at JBL products (http://www.jbl.com) or Logitech products (http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/speakersaudio/home_pcspeakers/&cl=us,en). The exact item you need depends on what you're using the computer and speakers for (ie: if you're playing a video on a big screen, you may want one set of speakers, but if you're only playing music in a small room, a less expensive/smaller item would probably do the job just fine).
    Hope that helps!

    Hi NWL1,
Thanks for the question. If I understand correctly, the iPhone won't update and is stuck. I would recommend that you read this article, it may be able to help you resolve or isolate the issue.

  • When i active my mac pro all i get is a white screen and  it loading .. and when it fully loaded it turns off and the same thing keep on happening again

when i active my mac pro all i get is a white screen and  it loading and when it fully load its turn off , and it keep on doing the same thing for hours

    Hi Shahenaz,
It's a little difficult to understand exactly what's going on with your mac based on the description you gave. Is there anything else you could add? Is it stuck in a reboot loop? Or is it just showing a white screen forever?
I had pretty much the same problem a few days ago, and was worried my mac was screwed permanently, but I got it fixed up no problem!
Follow these steps to try and troubleshoot/fix the problem.
    1. Boot into OSX Recovery Mode
First, turn off your Mac. If it isn't responding, or is stuck in a reboot loop, just hold down the power button until it turns off, and you hear the fans stop. Then boot it while holding the Command and R keys. If it successfully boots into OSX Recovery Mode, continue with this step. If not, skip to step two. (My Mac couldn't successfully boot into the recovery mode, so I had to go to step 2)
Select "Disk Utility" from the list of options, and find your built in hard drive from the list on the left. Usually there are two listings/names for your drive. The first should be something like "500GB longchainoflettersnumbers Media". Then the one below will be a little easier on the eyes, named Macintosh HD, if you haven't changed its name. That's the one you want, click it.
Now go to the "First Aid" tab. Click on the "Verify Disk" button in the bottom right corner, and let it do its thing. Once that's done, hit repair disk, also in the bottom right corner. If your disk is corrupted, you may need to run the repair process several times, before it comes up completely clean.
Once this is done, select Shut Down from the Apple menu and, once your Mac is completely off, turn it back on like normal. If it works, great. If not, proceed to step two.
    2. SafeBoot
Sometimes, when a mac is acting up and doesn't want to start, all it takes is a safe boot, followed by a regular restart. Or maybe you recently installed a program that either has malicious or errored coding that's causing your troubles. This is where Safe Boot comes in.
Turn off your mac, and reboot it while holding Shift. (If you want to see the process that's going on in the background, boot while holding Shift, Command, and V. This will enter something called Verbose Mode).
If it boots successfully into Safe Mode, great. If you believe that there's a particular program that you recently downloaded that might be causing your trouble, now's the time to delete it. If not, just reboot normally and see if it works! If it doesn't, or if your Mac didn't even Safe Boot like mine, proceed to step 3.
    3. Fsck!
For this step, you're going to be booting your mac into Single User Mode. I'm not going to go into details as to what this step does, but it works for some people. Here are the steps.
Turn off your mac, and reboot it while holding Command and S. The screen should go black, and you'll see some white text run across the screen, wait a few seconds, until you see the command prompt. Now type
    fsck -fy
and hit the Enter key. This will run a series of system checks, which could take a few minutes. Be patient on this part. Once it's done, it will show one of two messages:
    1. "The volume (your Mac) appears to be OK
    or
    2. "File System Was Modified"
If you got message 1, type reboot and press Return. Hopefully your computer works after this - if not, proceed to step 4.
If you got message 2, run the same command again until you get message 1. If it doesn't seem to be working, turn off your system and proceed to step 4.
If you couldn't even boot into Single User Mode in the first place (like me), go to step 4 anyways.
    Step 4: Reset the NVRAM
The NVRAM is another kind of RAM that stores data like the computer volume you had set before you turned it off, or the screen brightness, resolution etc. This memory is saved, unlike with regular RAM. Resetting it isn't harmful to your system, it will just put your screen brightness, volume, etc. to defaults.
Turn off your Mac, and reboot while holding Command, Option, P, and R, and continue holding them down until you hear the computer restart again.
I can't really explain why to do this step, I just know it works for some people, and seems to be what unbricked my MacBook Pro. If none of these steps, fixed your Mac, well the situation is looking pretty grim. Try setting up a meeting with a Mac Genius at your local Apple store. However, I know that many other people with these symptoms ended up having a logic board failure. Apple can swap out your logic board for a new one, but the price is pretty hefty, somewhere around $300 I believe.
Well I wish you luck, I hope this helped you!

  • LP8, Leopard, UAD, RAM... the whole **** thing!

    Hi all,
Been reading lots of threads recently covering a whole range of issues, - a startling amount of which I have come across myself. Here are my experiences...
There's no doubt in my mind that Leopard & LP8 are having trouble with each other. This is of course really... REALLY irritating, though not unusual considering Leopard is @ v.2 and LP8 is v.0.1! This ALWAYS happens when Apple release a new OS or application. Much as I don't like it... it just does. So if you're looking for (relying on...) stability (or track counts) and you're currently using LP7 and Tiger, just keep on keeping on... DON'T upgrade yet! You'll save yourself a lot of time & frustration. If you're already in Leopard/LP8 and are getting pops & crackles, make sure your I/O buffer is 256 or above & make sure you turn off airport! Has been causing lots of people grief.
I'm pretty certain there are some major conflicts with UAD and LP8, (not surprising really given the OS is having trouble.) Other threads have mentioned slow/fragmented redraws when moving plug-in windows & the "spinning ball"; - for me, this only seems to start happening if I "mount" a UAD plug, ON SCREEN? Eg:- In one small (5 channel) project, I have a couple of instances of Sculpture, an ESM, ES2 & VSL running, with a couple of Apple Ad.Limiters, 1 delay designer, Ampeg SVX and CSR. And 1 instance of a UAD Dimension D. The project can be run with ALL their windows mounted on the screen & ALL can be moved around freely with no problems. EXCEPT, the Dimension D? If this is open (mounted) by itself, with no other plug-ins on screen, it can be moved freely. Open just ONE other plug in window and try to move EITHER of them a couple of cms & up comes the spinning ball and the resulting window is inevitably fragmented. The Mac's CPU meter is barely tickling 25% on any given core and the UAD meter reads 8%! - so we're not talking "stress" here people? I haven't had time to see if the same thing happens with other UAD plugs, but I'd say there's a good chance it would. Anybody else? Only interim work around I can suggest is to bear it in mind & close all other plug-in windows before you modify anything UAD. And "SAVE" before you do... lest the spinning ball gets stuck and you can't even force quit! (Yes... it does.)
Glad to report that SampleTank, Ampeg SVX & VSL have all been working perfectly in LP8. I've just moved house & much is still in storage, so I don't know about Guitar Rig 2. (Anybody?) SSL released v.2.53 for Duende about a month ago. Had MAJOR hassles with that before (something to do with addressing multiple cores), so am hoping it's been addressed. v.2.53 is apparently Leopard compatible. (Anybody?) Liquid Mix has been a non starter for me in LP8, as it hasn't been able to pass the AU validator. v.2.2 has just been released & is said to address this issue (as well as an issue with a Low pass filter) Anybody? FXpansion have just released V. 2.0.3.15 for BFD2. This is a PUBLIC BETA understand! I'm not game, but... Anyone else? BFD 1.5 is apparently compatible with LP8 but ONLY in Tiger. BFD 1.5 is also now discontinued, so there'll be no more updates for it.
RME (FireFace 400/800) seem to be at logger heads with apple at the moment & god only knows where or when it'll be sorted out. I haven't been able to get my ff800 to work at all... NOT HAPPY! Lots of peeved users on their forums with no end in sight... just a lot of buck passing. My old G5 now has it's very own ff800! I've just taken on an Apogee Duet which, although limited in I/O (& unbalanced outputs... blah, blah, blah) has been rock solid and sounds great. Better than the ff anyhow... in my humble opinion. If you're buying a new Mac & you're in the market for a new interface, I'd steer well clear of RME unfortunately.
Last but not least... RAM. Some users have posted that their machines have fallen into a blank screen/constant restart cycle/looping. I have come across this problem too... only after I'd upgraded to Leopard/LP8? Coincidence... perhaps? I suspected it was either RAM or a dodgy video card, so after 2 days of fiddling I took the machine to an apple centre & of course it started up without a hitch!? The tech there introduced me to a little freeware app. called "Rember", (Go to Versiontracker) which checks for faulty RAM. It found no problems. (While the machine was there he fixed the AWFUL vibration problem that had developed, but that's another story!) Upon return, the machine worked well for a couple of days, then began the grey screen & shutdown messages. Diagnostics pointed to RAM? I checked "About this Mac" and sure enough, it said I had 3Gig??? I restarted & it said I was back to 16? I ran "Rember" again & it said your RAM is good. The machine performed without fault for the rest of the day. It's worth mentioning at this point that, with UAD cards, if you want to put your machine into "deep sleep", you have to unload the UAD driver with their supplied Utility tool. The following morning I woke the machine from sleep and checked "About this Mac"... 16Gig. No problems. I always restart the Mac when woken from sleep, as it re-loads the UAD driver at start-up. It doesn't take long & I'd recommend it to anyone using UAD's. Checked "About this Mac" again... no problems. Worked away until lunchtime, unloaded driver & put machine to sleep. Came back, re-started, checked "About this Mac"... 12Gig? I was just a "little bit" annoyed. Shut it down, took the cover off & pushed the RAM cards; there was NO perceivable movement whatsoever... not even half a mil! Cranked her up again... 16 Gig! Ran "Rember"... all's good. Haven't had a problem since & that was about three weeks ago? SO... if you've had this same problem, there's hopefully a solution that won't see you gutting your Mac of RAM just to get the B*$t@*d working again! Fingers crossed for you.
My apologies for the length of this thread. Hope it helps some... or at least lets a few know that YOU ARE NOT ALONE!
    Cheers...

How much RAM does your super-fast modern desktop have? AND what is the size of your composition?
If you're getting spaces between the green bar, your RAM Preview options may include skip frames.
If you don't have enough RAM to cache a large (or long) video, you can lower the resolution that you're attempting to RAM Preview (in your comp window if you're using Auto, or in the RAM Preview options).  Unfortunately, it means that you'll be trading quality of the video playback for duration of frames played.
You can adjust the exposure of the video in the comp or footage windows by using the Exposure Button
Turn up the value to over/under expose the video, but it won't change the RENDER, just the way you look at it in the window.
You can toggle the icon on/off if you have a certain value you like to keep it set to.

  • The Great Fios Dilemma

I have a love hate relationship with Fios.  Anybody else feel the same? Sure the internet is fast and rarely drops, however the On-Demand service is an absolute Fail with a capital F.  Lets just list why shall we...
    1. Severly Flawed On-Demand Menu Interface
    - Major Usability issues exist.  The same things that frustrate everyone forced to navigate a bad government website exist here. Anything you're looking for is hidden at least 3 clicks and multiple directional moves further away than it should be.  Even the government is getting better at this.  It's deplorable that Verizon is so late to the usability table.  Stop burrying your best content under a huge, archaic and overburdened folder system.  Boil the stuff people actually watch to the top.  Make it easy to find what you are looking for. Just a thought, let people set in the options menu set filters.  Try a setting that would always display only subscribed, HD, or free content. That would remove half of your problem right there.  I do not want to always navigate through your pay per view content or a massive alphabetical list to get to what I want.  Super markets finally listened to annoyed mothers ages ago, take a tip from them and offer us a "No Candy Isle" (as a kid I hated it of course, but my mom was the one paying and unfortunately for me she loved it)
    2. Inexplicable (Dis)function
    - On-Demand Resume Play,  Rewind, and Fast Forward does not always function as advertised.  Brains tell me the latter must be the networks finally catching up to us skipping the comercials.  If this is an intentional limitation imposed by the content owner then just say so.  The kicker here is not knowing if resume play will work or reset the program.  Trust me, this irritates your users and in no time will make them remember Comcast fondly.  I know because it happened  to me yesterday, after fast forwarding through an entire movie three times because I overstayed the Pause functions welcome.  If I am going to get screwed if I wait to long please at least give me a timer.
    3. Customer Disservice, Verizon Set-Top Box Vs. Samsung Television... Firmware Shmirmware
    - The third issue only applies to some, but those affected know well the frustration it causes.  The HDMI output of the set top box is not compatable with some Samsung LCD televsions. When connected the image and audio will flicker randomly but often enough to annoy the viewer and possibly damage the television in the process.  Incredibly, I have learned to live with this but only because of my unwillingness to give up hope for a firmware update.  Verizon's tac with this issue was to blame Samsung and advise the use of component cables and rca audio.  Samsung in turn blames Verizon.  This is a customers nightmare and a perfect storm of screwage.  Neither party accepts blame therefore the issue is never resolved.  If you have seen the movie Contact you may remember the question at the end that revealed an unmentioned truth and was never answered or addressed.  The scene involves a judge and the movies victorious prick attorney post trial sharing an aside.  It goes something like this... Judge, "The fact that it recorded static isn't what interests me... What interests me is that it recorded approximately eighteen hours of it."  to which the jerk responds "That is interesting, isn't it?" end of movie.  To which I would say to Verizon...  It is not the fact that your set top box does not work with my Samsung television that interests me... What interests me is that everything thing else on the planet does.  Hmmmm.
Your product is flawed. Please fix it... Soon.

Yes there is some content, especially the free broadcast/network stations, that will not allow the FF feature. The paid or subscription folders will allow the FF type actions. We are aware of some issues with not being able to resume or move through the movie, but our very next software release scheduled for the 3rd quarter is fixing that.

We have been getting fewer reports as later media guide versions have been released. If you have a Samsung TV and haven't tried HDMI in a while, please try it again.. We try to make the system as compatible for our customers products as possible. HDMI Syncing / Compatibility issues are not strictly a Verizon problem, it's a widespread problem. There are Samsung TV's that work just fine using HDMI. In our office we use a Samsung TV to do our testing. You will also find some Samsung TV's, as well as other manufacturers TV's,  not working on other providers and other equipment. This epidemic can be found on many other TV's brands and cable providers. Google search "Samsung HDMI handshake issue" and you will see its very widespread. Very first result shows connection issues to a PS3. I can see how frustrating this would be

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
In order to change your Apple ID or password for your iCloud account on your iOS device, you need to delete the account from your iOS device first, then add it back using your updated details. (Settings > iCloud, scroll down and hit "Delete Account")
Providing you are simply updating your existing details and not changing to another account, when you delete your account, all the data that is synced with iCloud will also be deleted from the device (but not from iCloud), but will be synced back to your device when you login again.
In order to change your Apple ID or password for your iCloud account on your computer, you need to sign out of the account from your computer first, then sign back in using your updated details. (System Preferences > iCloud, click the sign out button)
In order to change your Apple ID or password for your iTunes account on your iOS device, you need to sign out from your iOS device first, then sign back in using your updated details. (Settings > store, scroll down and tap your ID)
If you are using iMessages or FaceTime, you will also need to log out and into your ID there too.

  • The Main Thing About Patterns

    I was recently reminded that...
"The Main Thing is to Keep the Main Thing the Main Thing"
I thought about it a bit, as you may do, and realised how vital this is for the 23 patterns.
It is a simple requirement of this forum to allow us to communicate.
I 'think' I know what the main thing is about each pattern, and you may do too. We talk about them, compare them with our problems and with each other. We recommend them, follow them, reject them (at times) and most of all be use them because they are useful.
    But...
What about the grey areas? Are there any overlaps (redundancy) or holes (omissions of major emphasis). Some such discussions use a different interpretation of a pattern to resolve things but shouldn't each pattern have only one main theme? I think this was/is the intention.
The point of my thread is to post my interpretation of the major theme in each pattern, in no mour than 4 (yes FOUR) words and test the general undestanding of the OOD developers.
If we have consensus, great, but please offer an improved theme description (in 1-4 words) if your interpretation is different.

In the patterns forum I try to talk patterns. You misunderstand me. The problem isn't that you
"talk patterns" in a pattern forum; it's that your
understanding is so poor. You insist on making what
I think are incorrect statements (e.g., trying to
describe asynchronous messaging as a Proxy), all
couched in a language where you try to portray
yourself as an authority of GoF.
Especially in this thread. Maybe I'll meet you in
n another tread to talk more about other OODaspects.
If your expertise in those other threads is anything
like what you've shown here, I'm sure I'll continue
to disagree with you from time to time.
%1 I am learning GoF and certainly not an authority on it.
2 I have been trying to test and improve the understanding I have with posts like the ones in this thread.
3 I take it that you think I'm making many incorrect statements which may be, but that's why I'm trying to discuss the concepts.
4 Many of my posts are based on material I have read, not made up, which have confused me. One of these was the inclusion of a queued request using a Proxy patterm. I'll try to find the ref again. I didn't mention messaging at all although a reply did.
5 I may have failed but I did try to start this thread with where I was at that time and I didn't copy it from anywhere before you ask. In this way I was aiming to improve my understanding anyway. I guess many thread readers at my level of understanding (or lower if that's possible!) may also find the thread useful. Even this dialogue too.
Sorry if I'm irritating you but I thought forum members would like discussing their understanding and expeince of patterns. I find it helpful because some interaction can achieve things which reading cannot.
Thanks for all your comments anyway. Perhaps I'll start all my posts with "Warning: This is only what I think. It might not be true" or something of that sort. Your posting experience speaks for itself.
