The great xmonad.hs thread

For several reasons, I wanted to start the great xmonad.hs thread.
Idea is simple: just post the xmonad.hs file you're using, and/or discuss yours/someone else's.
To start off, this is my (small) xmonad.hs file:
[cpf@galactica .xmonad]% cat xmonad.hs
-- module Main where
import XMonad
import XMonad.Config.Xfce
-- import XMonad.Config.Gnome
import qualified Data.Map as M
main = xmonad $ xfceConfig
terminal = "urxvt",
modMask = mod4Mask,
keys = \c -> myKeys c `M.union` keys xfceConfig c
myKeys (XConfig {modMask = modm}) = M.fromList $
[ ((modm, xK_p), spawn "hayaku"),
((modm .|. shiftMask, xK_p), spawn "xfrun4"),
((modm .|. shiftMask, xK_q), spawn "xfce4-session-logout")

Nice idea, xmonad has a nice config style.

  • The Great JTree Refreshing Problem!

    hi, i am using a Jtree to display information retrieved from an X.500 directory.
    I am dealing with a great amount of information, and performance is the great issue in here. So, my problem is that, retrieving 3000 entries from the directory with JNDI takes 1 second,building and inserting the 3000 nodes takes 3 seconds, and in the end, the refresh of the jtree takes 7 seconds!!!!!
    It's just to mutch time... i've tried dividing the 3000 entries in sets of 100 and insert this sets one at the time, so the JTree could refresh itself, this way, the user would see some action hapenning and it would be a lot more happy than he is now... The problem is that, the Jtree do not makes this refresh, only when a insert all, she starts to refresh and takes the infamous 7 seconds.
    does this have anything to do with the low priority of the Swing threads that makes the refreshment...
    please... any help is welcome
    thanks in advance

    use DefaultMutableTreeNode's insert/add methods to add
    the node.
    Steps:
    - make the root node.
    - insert the nodes in the root node,
    - set the root node as the root to the treemodel.
    it may be useful to u.A little off the subject of the original question, but when I want to use the same JTree to display new information (instead of popping up a new frame with the new info), I also create a new root node, populate it, and then set the currently-displayed JTree's model's root to the new root node. However it never redraws with the new tree contents, even though I call invalidate() on the JTree.
    What explicitly do you do to have it redraw with the new contents?
    Thanks!

  • Can I get the Dust Jacket and the Great Cover Look of iPhoto in Aperture?

    Hello,
    I am a huge fan of iPhoto (and most of the other Apple products.) I am using Aperture 2 and I recently created and ordered a book using it. I was blown away by the page layout options, however, I was greatly disappointed when I received my book and way the cover! It looked like someone just used some sort of "sticky" as the label/cover. It is already starting to peel off! Our client wasn't very happy with it at all.
    Can someone tell my how I can get the great features and flexibility of the pages that are offered in Aperture along with the great cover and dust jacked of iPhoto? That would really be great!!
    Thanks in advance for your help!

    One option could be to save the Aperture book layouts as JPEGs and then add them to an iPhoto book as full-bleed images. Then order the book via iPhoto.

    First, whenever you post, there is a link for Formatting Help. This link takes you to here: http://forum.java.sun.com/features.jsp#Formatting and tells you how to use the code and /code tags so any code you post will be easily readable.
    Your problem is this: ShoppingApp has a ShoppingCart and ShoppingCart is a ShoppingApp - that is ShoppingCart extends ShoppintApp. You are saying that ShoppingCart is a ShoppingApp - which probably doesn't make sense. But the problem is a child class always calls one of its parent's constructors. So when you create a ShoppingApp, the ShoppingApp constructor tries to create a ShoppingCart. The ShoppingCart calls its superclass constructor, which tries to create a ShoppingCart, which calls its superclass constructor, which tries to create a ShoppingCart, which...
    It seems like ShoppingCart should not extend ShoppingApp.

  • IPod Touch 5th Generation won't turn on and the home button is broken, followed the steps from another thread but it's still not working

    I have an iPod Touch 5th Generation with iOS 8.1, my home button is broken and I've been using AssistiveTouch for months now. Today I just locked my iPod and it wouldn't unlock again, it doesn't respond at all, it won't turn on. It was almost fully charged, so it's not the battery. I followed the steps from this thread, but I'm still getting the "USBMuxListenerCreate: No Error" message in CMD Prompt. I bought my iPod abroad and even though I do have the warranty, I've been told at the iStore that it's not valid here, so going to the store isn't really an option. Any ideas how to solve this?

    Sorry, but without a working home button it is not possible to reset or restore your device. You should visit an Authorized Appel Service Provider or Apple Store to get it serviced. The warranty for an iPod is not limited to the country where it has been bought, check here: one-year limited warranty
    Jailbraking the device will void the warranty.
    You can check the warranty status by inserting the serial number on this page: https://selfsolve.apple.com/agreementWarrantyDynamic.do
    A list of Authorized Apple Service Providers can be found here: iPod touch - Contact Us - Apple Support

  • Thanks all for the great advice.  Another question.  If I use Entourage on my desktop Mac to access an email address I use on there, is it possible to be able to access my email on that same email address on my iPad either with or without Entourage?

    Thanks all for the great advice.  Another question.  If I use Entourage on my Mac desktop to access my mail using an email address I have on there, is it possible to access my emails on that same email address on my iPad, either with or without using Entourage.  Is there an Entourage app, or something I could use?  Thanks...

    Simply add the email account to Mail, no need for Entourage.
    One word of warning, though, iPads tend to become community property (meaning anyone who uses your iPad can access your email). That is why I have zero email accounts on my iPad.
    I use Entourage on my desktop as well, so going back and forth between Entourage and Mail (whether on your iPad or iPhone) is no problem.

  • Setting the right number of thread count

    Hi,
    What's the right number of thread for a server that has 2 CPU? I know the default setting for Dev is 15 and Production is 25. From what I read in the Performance Tuning Guide, it should be somewhere around the number of CPUs on the machine? Is that right? Or keep the default?

    Statement st = con.createStatement();
    st.setFetchSize(no_of_rows_here);
    ResultSet rs = st.executeQuery(query);Sudha

  • How can i get the stack of one thread from another thread

    hi !
    i have a pool threads ,some times all therads in that pool are besy becouse somting lock the threads so there is no free thread to handle ... .
    what i want is a way to get the stack of these thread so i can print them to see way they lock ...
    thanks,
    zvika

    Maybe something like this (haven't actually tried it):
    Add a method to your Threads to print the trace:
    public class MyThread extends Thread {
        public void run() {
        public void printCurrentStack() {
            (new Exception()).printStackTrace(); // or whatever method you choose
    MyThread mt = new MyThread();
    mt.start();
    mt.printCurrentStack();

  • What are the Great Features of the JTable?

    Hi frienz,
    I am working on JTable so i just want to know that what are the great feature that we can achieve using JTable for the information?

    Seems an upside-down question. It implies that you're after a solution to a problem you haven't got. You'll get on much better if you think of what you want to achieve, and wonder if JTable can do it, otherwise you'll end up cramming your application full of useless features nobody wanted and are awkward to use, just so you can use Shiny JTable Feature 'X'

    Thanks alot for your reply. It is a web application
    using java and tomcat server. And the problem is that
    sometime when I click on a button or a link than the
    CPU goes to 100% and it hangs but normally it works
    smoothly without any problem.This often indicates a busy retry loop somewhere. You need to acquire the thread dump when the problem occurs, but be warned that depending on the problem it may not be possible to obtain a Java-level thread dump. In that case you need to try and take an OS level thread dump - eg using pstack on solaris/linux (and there's some win32 tool as well if I recall correctly).

  • *IMPORTANT* Limiting the number of active threads

    Hi All,
    i have a few of questions so please bare with me:
    1) What is the best way to limit the number of active threads? ie i want to run 10 threads but i want there to be only 3 running at a time.
    this is how im thinking of doing it rite now:
    count = 0;
    while(...)
    thread[count].start();
    while(threadgroup.activeCount > 4){}
    count++;
    2) I have a class that extends thread how do i overide the constructor so that i can add the thread to the threadgroup?
    ok here is an example of what i mean:
    u can do this with a normal thread: Thread one = new Thread(threadgroup, "what");
    this is what i need to do tho:
    class whatever extends Thread {
    public whatever(int a, int b, ThreadGroup tg)
    { what do i put here to make this thread part of the tg threadgroup?}
    thanx for any help in advance and i kinda need a quick answer cause this is due soon , thanx youssefe2k4

    Hi,
    1) Why do you want to do that?
    2) super(tg, "a name");
    /KajIt's part of a homework assignment... I saw another post on this forum and one at JavaRanch where you need to create an application that given a directory will scan each file and report the file name and how many lines are in them... but it must be multithreaded, each thread scan a single file and updates some list and finally you can only have three of these file scanning threads running at the same time...
    Quote "To avoid having too many threads competing for the system resources when there are a lot of files in the directory, we will restrict the number of active Producer threads (active threads are started threads that have not ended yet) during the run time. For this assignment, at any time there should not be more than 3 active Producer threads. If there are already three active Producer threads during the run time, the program should wait until one of them ends to start the next Producer thread."
    I was think about working on it, so that I can strengthen my knowledge in threads...
    I still might do it, just for fun... I don't know yet...
    We will see...

  • Combining the fixed and cached thread pools

    Is there a way to 'combine' the behavior of cached and fixed thread pools ? I have a requirement where
    - at startup, I need to execute a fixed number of short-lived tasks at the background
    - after startup, on demand, I need to run one short-lived task at a time
    If I use a fixed thread pool for my startup processing, it creates the fixed number of threads to process the tasks. But subsequently, those many threads are not required since my task submission is going to be one at a time. The remaining (n-1) threads therefore are really sitting idle & useless.
    If I use a cached thread pool, then I cannot constrain the number of threads to run at startup (since it creates one for each task). Though it ends up taking those threads out after they are idle for a fixed period. But I'm worried that it might create many threads and possibly slowing down the startup ?
    Is there a way to create a pool with a fixed number of threads but 'remove' a set of threads when they are idle ?
    TIA

    v_bala wrote:
    Thanks. The SynchronousQueue worked as expected. But I tried a LinkedBlockingQueue with size 1 hoping that would cause the second task submission to cause a new thread creation. It didn't. Instead it queues up the request (maybe the doc in ThreadPoolExecutor says that when it mentions "If corePoolSize or more threads are running, the Executor always prefers queuing a request rather than adding a new thread"). I suppose if I were to try another it would create another thread ? (I was testing with only two tasks - the first one ended up creating a thread for the task and the next got queued since the queue capacity is 1)yes, the TPE will not start adding threads until the queue starts rejecting them. kind of odd in my opinion, but that's how it works.
    Btw, that was an interesting idea to add a task that scale the core pool number down ! Currently it comes back down to just the one thread (my core pool size is one) after the idle timeout but your idea may give me a slightly better response since it will scale down the core pool size quicker....I suppose if there was a task submission before that idle time there maybe a performance hit (but I don't anticipate that in my case )?actually, that won't scale things down any faster. changing the core pool size will not ditch the other threads immediately, they will still stick around until they idle timeout. changing the core pool size allows you to not worry about the queue implementation (the first solution). you can set the initial core pool size to your "max" size on startup, then drop it down for the normal processing, all the while using a linkedblockingqueue of unlimited size.
