... the owner's permissions have vanish

We have at least 80 macs connected to various xserve's all running the latest OS (10.4.x) Server and (10.5.x) Client. When a network user logins in and recieves a home directory mounted through AFP (Share is not using ACLs) we find that in several cases when they perform a change permissions on a sharing files or folders shared, the owner's permissions have vanish.
It's very helpfully to use the "root" user to change this but we can't do that all day ? ... Help

I would recommend avoiding collisions of "POSIX" and ACL permissions.
I can see why.
And I've generally avoided trying to make client-side changes to server-side
file-permissions via a mounted sharepoint.
See the section on AFP in
http://developer.apple.com/documentation/Security/Conceptual/SecurityOverview/Concepts/chapter_3_section_9.html#//appleref/doc/uid/TP30000976-CH203-CHDJJGBF
I guess, in general, I'm just not understanding why straight POSIX permissions doesn't function properly. But, obviously it doesn't, at least with regard to allowing users to change permissions via AFP.
The reason users attempt to change permissions is because of the old,"I created it so the rest of the group only had r-x permissions and I need them to have rwx permission," case. Which with ACLs, because of inheritance, they shouldn't run into anymore.
So, I guess I just have to try to migrate over from POSIX permissions to ACLs with as few collisions as possible (to preserve sanity).
Thanks for everyone that humored me and actually helped me take troubleshooting steps to realize that I was just seeing broken POSIX permissions and that I need to dump them for ACLs (without seeing with my own eyes, it didn't make any sense as to why or exactly what I was butting up against).

  • Does the user have to be the owner of CWM2 objects to access them via OLAP API?

    Hi,
What are required for RDBMS users to use OLAP API? Regarding page 6-9 of Oracle9i OLAP User's Guide 9.2.0.1, following access rights are required.
    CONNECT role
    QUERY REWRITE system privilege
SELECT privilegs on the database objects containing the data to be analyzed
So, I created a new user TEST1 and granted all the priviges above. Then I tried to create a new crosstab using New Crosstab Wizard in JDev903_pre(OLAPConnecton is using TEST1). When I choose a measure that is created in CWM1, I could create a crosstab without problem. But when I tried to create a crosstab from a measure that is created in CWM2 by OLAPSYS user, I recieved the following error.
BIB-9509 Oracle OLAP did not create cusor.
    oracle.express.ExpressServerExceptionError class:OLAPI
    Server error descriptions:
DPR: Unable to create server cursor, Generic at TxsOqDefinitionManager::createCursorManager
    OES: ORA, Generic at TxsRdbSelectStatement:execute()
The curious thing is that I can create a crosstab from the same measure if I use another connection that uses OLAPSYS. Does the user that connects to CWM2 using OLAP API have to be the owner of those CWM2 objects?
    Thank you.
    Best Regards,
    Seiji

The user does not have to be the owner of the cwm2 objects to access them. Access to cwm2 objects is based on database security. Therefore, if the user is not the owner of the object (if user is the owner, they obviously have access to the object), then as long as the user has been granted access to the underlying physical object (i.e., the table the dimension or cube has been mapped to), the user will be able to access the object.

  • Keywords Have Vanished

Using Lightroom 3; Windows 7 as OS.
When creating my catalogues, I made sure that under the Preferences / Presets I had removed the tick from the option to store keywords with a catalogue. My understanding being that the keywords would remain "within the programme" and so available for which ever catalogue one might be working with.
On opening the programme today, my keyword list was missing with some 30,000 images NOT being in the count I saw when I last used the programme earlier this week.
I can see a small number of keywords but not all that I had created.
Those that are there are not in the groupings I had put them.
I haven't hidden anything accidentally - have checked for that.
I haven't selected an alternative keyword list inadvertently.
Having backed up my files a little while ago, is there a way to export that keyword list and then import it into my current catalogue status?
Any suggestions please?  All advice most gratefully received.
    Cheers, Tony

    Linda,
do you mean this thread: Disappearing keywords
I checked to see if the 2 keywords that have vanished were listed in the keyword HUD.
    How did you check?
Sometimes it helps to enter the keyword, or a part of it, into the searchfield, and then to open all disclosure triangles. The keywords are hierarchical, and they may be hidden in subcategories of other keywords. This way, you can have duplicate keywords, that are not identical, if they are appearing at different levels in the hierarchy.
For example: In my library are two different keywords "family", one in the Stock categories personal section and one in my own custom keywords section of the HUD:

  • My partner's name shows in my "e-mail" address.  We both share the computer and I have been set up separately.  How can I get my name to show.

How can I get my name on my e-mail address.  I share the computer.  My partner is the "owner" and i have a separate log-in.  His name shows on my e-mail.

Log into your account, launch Mail, and select Preferences from the Mail menubar option->Accounts and delete his and add yours.

  • My fairly new iMac has been giving me trouble with permissions. I tried to make the owner of the hard drive myself, instead of three groups I hadn't created. Now it won't start. I''ve tried safe boot and resetting the PRAM.. Nothing.

Reset the PRAM, safe boot, removed everything but the key
    board. Gray spinning wheel.
It started with me trying to change permissions. I'm the
owner, yet it would give me problem when moving files from desktop to hard drive.
Now it says library extensions are missing. I never
    touched the library.

Hi Ralph - likely you're right. The section below, taken from their site, looked like it may offer some hope:
    Unlock what is rightfully yours
BatChmod can also give you back access to locked files, folders or disks. If something is locked, it can unlock it. If you no longer have permissions to files or folders, change the permissions back.
Sometimes, a whole hard disk can become inaccessible or locked and often, BatChmod can unlock those too!
If you moved a folder or files from another machine or another user on your machine, BatChmod can help set you up as their rightful owner.
As you say, a re-install is probably the best way to go, but I thought that given that nothing's working correctly now it might be worth a go. If it fails desiree274 can still proceed with a re-install.

  • I am a new iPhone 4s owner. I have a tone in iTunes that I downloaded from the web as a m4r file. Why won't it sync to my iPhone so I can set it as a ringtone.

    Lois

Yes, the tone is available and checked in iTunes under the Tones library.
Yes, it is also listed under the Tones tab for my iPhone, but it is grayed out.
Yes, tones are selected under "sources" in General Preferences, along with everything else.
SyncTones was NOT selected under the Tones tab for my iPhone. I did so and it synced.
    Thanks for your help!

  • Hello there - I am sharing an iPhoto library across two accounts on the same computer - it works fine EXCEPT for Quicktime movies - they play on one account and claim I don't have the rights on the other - all permissions are on and ok?

Hello there - I am sharing an iPhoto library across two accounts on the same computer - it works fine EXCEPT for Quicktime movies - they play on one account and claim I don't have the rights on the other - all permissions are on and ok?

It should be in the Users/ Shared folder.
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Note the option to check and repair Library Permissions

  • Help. I have a Google Hangout in 40mins and my sound seems to have vanished. I went to Sys Prefs and it came up with Digital Out....and the Internal Speakers option is no longer there. How do I reboot, or fix this please?

help. I have a Google Hangout in 40mins and my sound seems to have vanished. I went to Sys Prefs and it came up with Digital Out....and the Internal Speakers option is no longer there. How do I reboot, or fix this please?

There are many possible causes for this issue. Take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried. Some may not apply to your model. Back up all data before making any changes.
    1. Start with the steps recommended in this support article. Don't skip any of the steps. It's the starting point for further efforts to solve the problem.
    2. Make sure you have a fully up-to-date installation of OS X.
    3. If you've installed an application called "Memory Clean" or any other third-party software that is supposed to "clean" or "purge" memory automatically, remove it according to the developer's instructions and restart. You should do that even if the software is not causing the problem, because it's useless.
    4. Other third-party software that has been reported to interfere with sound output includes "Boom" and "Samsung Kies." If applicable, uninstall according to the developer's instructions (not by dragging something to the Trash.)
    5. If an AirPlay device is selected for sound output from iTunes (or from other applications via third-party software such as "Airfoil"), deselect it.
    6. Launch the application "Audio MIDI Setup" by entering the first few letters of its name in a Spotlight search and selecting it in the results (it should be at the top.) Select Built-in Output from the list on the left. If the Mute boxes are checked, uncheck them.
    7. If a red light is visible in the audio-out port when sound should be playing, the internal switch is stuck in the position for digital output. You may be able to free it by inserting and removing a mini-stereo jack of the proper size. If not, the machine needs to be serviced. Inserting any kind of tool in the port may cause damage that won't be covered by the warranty.
If there's no red light, the switch may still be stuck in the headphone position. Try to free it the same way.
    8. Disconnect all wired peripherals except keyboard and mouse, if applicable. If more than one display is connected, disconnect all extra ones. Restart and test.
    9. If you have a MacBook Air, turn off Bluetooth and restart.
    10. Start up in safe mode. Don't log in; just restart as usual when the login screen appears. When you do, make sure the words "Safe Boot" do not appear in the login screen. If they do, the system is still in safe mode and sound won't work.
    11. Reset the NVRAM.
    12. Reset the SMC.
    13. Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    /Library/Preferences/Audio
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
Services ▹ Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item selected. Move the selected item to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator login password. Restart the computer and empty the Trash. Recreate your settings in the Sound preference pane.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C. In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.
    14. Reinstall OS X after backing up all data.
    15. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store.

I bought a used iPhone on ebay.  when I try to activate it, I get a message that the owner needs to sign in to the device with their appleID and password.  I have no way of knowing who the owner is.  How can I get around this?

Check the eBay listing. Did it state the device was Activation Locked? If not, then make a claim as Meg stated and get a refund. You will not be able to activate the phone and no one can help you contact the owner, unless that is the person that sold the device. If they cannot remove the phone from their account because it is not theirs, then refund is your route. Even Apple cannot assist with locating the previous owner.

please could somebody help in this context.

You've encountered Activation Lock. Read here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH13695
Without that info, you won't be able to re-activate the phone. Apple can't/won't help you with this.

Return it. If you can't return it, turn it over to the police and consider this a life lesson.

No. Turn it into the military police.

  • Preserving Current Owner file permissions using the copy function

I've been trying to use ARD 3's Copy function to overwrite a single user's Home folder in a classroom environment made up of a few Macs.
This is done with the aim of refreshing the Home folder every time a class is concluded.
However, although the Copy function works and succeeds in overwriting the Home folder, when the client is logged in locally, all the applications suffer from permission issues.
I've tried both the; Inherit from destination folder and; (ii) Preseve current owner, file permissions in the "Set item ownership to" option of the Copy window but neither appear to work.
I've also attempted to mirror the target user's account by creating the same account on the admin machine to push the Home folder over but the permissions remain a mess later.
Is there a way to get around this without having to implement lengthy UNIX commands?
I know of the existence of remote management apps, e.g. Deep Freeze (http://www.faronics.com/html/DFMac.asp), but under a budget constraint, such options are undesirable at the moment.
    PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

Drag the photo from the iPhoto window to the desktop or export as kind = JPEG
As to too small - what is too small?  The pixel dimensions of the exported JPEG will be identical to the original TIFF - the file size is smaller because JPEGs are compressed - which of course reduces file size - which of course is the reason that JPEG exists
