The power of image
What is sometimes called the 'collective subconscience' of cultures...and sometimes called ' semiotic '... re: imagry.. is very powerful.
The "messages" are sometimes so powerful that a relatively talented photographer might get the coveted pulitzer prize or whatever the photo guys and girls get when they get great pictures. Sometimes the great pictures are horrible... some injustice or terrible " action " caught on film.
Sometimes a right minded person seeing the picture would say ( in their heart ) " put down the camera and help that person ! "
But sometimes something is powerful and obviously " artistic", maybe planned and posed, maybe set up by the photographer painstakingly....but it doesnt matter...as it just LOOKS so powerful and beautiful even in its SORROW .... here's an example.
The article where the photo is displayed is this link at ny times today...
http://www.nytimes.com/2011/10/16/world/middleeast/yemeni-security-forces-fire-on-proteste rs-in-sana.html?_r=1&hp
the pic... followed by pic of something I saw at the worlds fair in nyc a while ago...
Oddly enough... the demise of pan am seems to have ushered in the demise of the whole " worlds fair " mentality...celebrating people. Now we celebrate banks and finance ministers instead. Go G 20 !
HAVE A YOODLE...RELAX.... WELCOME TO THE LOUNGE !
its beer thirty... !!! yipee !!!!!
( somethings wrong with my zoom setting or something re: type size and font etc... oh dear.... nothing looks quite normal )
of course it could be the pain killer medicine I'm taking and the beer....
Anyway...here's an interesting tidbit of info re: a new scientific discovery about car accidents and people being high on pot....
This study came about due to the new medical pot stuff going on ( legalized ) and the resultant car crashes that apparently happen if drivers on medical pot ( especially mixed with drinking beers etc )...
It sorta makes you wonder ...
kinda makes you wonder What the newspaper reporter was smoking... to come to this conclusion so late in the game...
http://yourlife.usatoday.com/health/story/2011-10-14/Pot-smoking-may-more-than-double-cras h-risk/50774786/1?csp=hf
excerpt ===========drivers smoking pot may increase risk of car accident ====
Overall, the risk of a crash was almost 2.7 times higher among marijuana users than non-users, the authors found. And the response was dose-specific, the authors said. That is, the more marijuana smoked -- in terms of frequency and potency -- the greater the likelihood of a crash.
=============
OK... I am through keeping everyone abreast of my internet studies today... and will now drink more BEERS and take another vicadin ( sp ? ) due to oral surgery pain ...and DONT WORRY... I AM NOT WALKING LET ALONE DRIVING !!!!

Help, I had aperture open and working on a image and did not have a battery in and bumped the power off. As a result it will not open my master, it is locked. when I try to open that Library it says There was an error opening the database for the library. I have tried every thing. I updated the other libr but now it will not open the main to update. What do I do?
Try starting Aperture with the command and option keys held down. You'll get 3 options.
Try each, starting at the top, in order, checking after each to see if it fixes the issue. -

My apple thunderbolt display (which I purchased 1.5 years ago; OS 10.7.5 Mac Mini) intermittently goes dark, does not wake from sleep after clicking mouse or keyboard, but there is "bonk" sound after clicking mouse or pressing keys, so am thinking it is a hardware problem with the display. Rebooting by pressing the power button turns the screen back on, but the same phenomenon has occurred several times. Could this be a software issue, or do I need to have my display repaired? Your feedback would be appreciated.
Hi ED, tough to tell, but it does sound like it's waking with the bonk, just not displaying.
Long shot but...
I wonder if it's a variation of this, of which I've seen many different symptoms...
Resolution
Move the mouse or trackpad cursor over the center area of the login window so you can see the user icons. Click on the icon of the user that you would like to login as, type in the user's password, and press Return.
If the login window is configured to show only the name and password fields, type in the user's name and password into the fields, and press Return (even if you cannot see the rest of the login window).
Additional Information
This issue will not occur if the display is not sleeping when the account is logged out. Use the steps below to confirm that the account is not configured to log out automatically while the display is sleeping:
1. Open System Preferences > Security & Privacy > General. Click the padlock to unlock the preference pane and enter your admin password. Click the Advanced button at the bottom, then see if the option "Log out after N minutes of inactivity" (where N is the number of minutes) is enabled.
2. Open System Preferences > Energy Saver and configure Display Sleep to occur after the account is logged out, by dragging the slider to a number of minutes that is greater than N was set to in the previous step.
Important: If automatic log out is not needed, disable "Log out after Nminutes of inactivity" in System Preferences > Security & Privacy > General. This will also prevent the issue.

I noticed today that my last back-up was this a.m. and it has tried several times to back up since but I keep getting this message
Time Machine couldn’t complete the backup to “TimeCap”.
The backup disk image “/Volumes/Data/ MacBook Pro ."sparsebundle” is already in use.
I have never had this problem before and don't know what to do. I am not that great around computers so if anyone can help I would appreciate it. I did try to do some research but could not understand any of the content I read. I sure don't know what "sparsebundle" is and this is the first time I ever heard the term.
If anyone can help woold appreciate it.
I have Version 10.9.1This is a standard issue..
Been around since LION but you missed out.. !! Well the old rule applies.. there are three types of Mac users.
1. The bugs have bitten you, and you have done the work arounds.
2. The bugs are biting you and you are now trying to find out what is going on.
3. The bugs will bite you. And in the meantime you laugh at everyone with problems and say it must be all their fault. Doesn't happen to my system.
You were simply in the last group.. now, with the wonders of mavericks to help, you got bit.
The solution is simple.. unplug the power cord from the TC .. count to 10.. power up the TC again.
No luck look at the more technical help.

Answer an interesting question?
Create a wiki article about it! -
After an earlier attempt to move Logic from my other mac (OSX 10.6.8) with the migration assistant to my new mac with OSX 10.8.2. I've re-started the whole start up process by erasing the hard drive from the new machine and build it up from scratch. After a new "out of the box" start, I decided to install LOGIC from my disks : starting with my 2007 package Logic Studio 8 and upgrading with my Logic 9 package from 2009. When trying to start to install 2008 I got the error message : Logic Studio.mpkg cannot be opened as the power pc programs are no longer supported.
What does this mean? HOw do I get this working under 10.8.2 as it works flawlessly under OSX 10.6.8. For sure I didn't buy a new machine to have OSX 10.8.2 but I suspect this is the roadblock to installing my logic package.
Help!Mark,
Sorry...
I completely lost the thread (I actually got confused between you and another poster on a another forum that was asking the same basic question) and somehow ended up thinking you were trying to install on a PPC Mac
My apologies and please ingnore those parts of my last post relating to the PPC Macs...
You have an Intel Mac and therefore Logic Studio 2 Boxed Upgrade set should install/run on your Mac without issue. As I said earlier.. you do not need to try and install from the original Logic Studio 1 /Logic 8 Boxed set...(It won't work anyhow because you have an Intel Mac and that version had a PPC installer) but just install from the Logic Studio 2 / Logic Pro 9 Upgrade Boxed setof DVDs instead...
Have you tried the "Make Disk Image" solution I gave earlier? That normnally works under such circumstances as what you are describing can happen when your DVD drive cannot read the DVDs correctly... I have had this situation myself where one drive read them okay and another failed to do so for whatever reason. Making and then installing from Disk images of those exact same disks resolved the issue for me...
You can try to reinstall directly from the DVDs of course though under some circumstances it may not allow you to reinstall Logic Pro itself if that part of the original installation attempt was successful... in which case you can also try this... (It's probably the easiest method if Logic 9 was already installed and present in your Apps Folder)
If the Logic Pro App is in your applications folder..
Run Software Updates to update Logic Pro to a version that will run under 10.8.2 (The initially installed version of Logic will not)
Run Logic
Go to the menu bar in Logic and select Logic Pro/Install Additional Content and select all content in there..
This content is basically exactly the same as what is stored on the remaining DVDs of the boxed set so you might not need to use the rest of the DVDs to install from but download it all instead from Apple Servers... -
The keyboard of my 11-inch MacBook Air, purchased in November 2011, isn't working at all. None of the keys respond except the power button. I'm able to restart the computer, and have done so multiple times. I've attempted SMC and PRAM resets, but they haven't worked.
I've never spilled anything on the laptop, haven't stepped on it, and haven't otherwise damaged it ever. I use the laptop very lightly. I only use it to take notes for class, browse the Internet, and watch movies. I don't download anything but PDFs, PowerPoints, images, and Word documents. I don't even have music on it. So I don't think I had any part in creating the problem.
I had this same problem with my laptop over the summer, and I took it into the Apple Store to get it repaired for $200. They told me that they didn't know the cause of the problem. I think they replaced the bottom half of my laptop entirely (receipt says there's a new "Housing, Top Case with Keyboard, US") and told me the problem was fixed. This was on June 30. The laptop keyboard stopped working again today, October 19. I called Apple Support and they told me that I would have to pay for the repair again because it's been 90 days since the last repair. I'm annoyed and upset that I have to pay $200 again to re-repair a problem that should've been properly fixed the first time. Plus, if the problem keeps happening despite multiple repairs, I can't afford to keep getting the laptop repaired over and over again due to the Apple employees' incompetence.
Does anyone have any advice on how to fix the laptop? I'm a grad student and don't have the funds to pay for another repair, and there's no way for me to get to an Apple Store without hiring a car service, so I'm trying to avoid going to the store if possible. Thank you.Get the new keyboard at eBay and replace by yourself may be cheaper way, though you're required higher skill and well know about MacBook Air.

My time machine does not back up and giving me this error message: The backup disk image “/Volumes/Data-1/Amiel’s MacBook Pro.sparsebundle” is already in use. Pls help.
Make sure that there are no other Macs backing up at the present time.

Plug the power cord back in
This will "fix" things about 98% of the time. Post back if you are in the unlucky 2% category. -

3D power point images don't import
Hello,
I have a Power Point template I'm trying to import - almost
all of the slides contain images with 3D shadings, shadows, and
perspectives.
Once the slides are imported into Captivate, all of these 3D
effects are lost, and as a result, in several cases the diagrams
appear to be out of alignment.
What am I doing wrong and how do I fix it?quote:
What am I doing wrong and how do I fix it?
(1) You are misunderstanding how Captivate treats
Power Point project imports, and (2) there is nothing you can do to
fix it.
Power Point slides are imported to Captivate as merged
(flattened) images. All transition effects are lost during the
import, with only the finished slide being imported. This is the
way Captivate treats Power Point slides and the behavior cannot be
changed. Sorry.

Where does the power cable connect in a macbook air 13.3?
won't bore you with the details why but before I buy a macbook air I would like to know what part of the machine the power cable goes in to please?
Perhaps this will help. I've circled the port:
Also note the port is a "MagSafe" meaning that the connection is magnetic -- if someone walks into the cable, it will come loose from the port fairly easily (instead of ripping).
UPDATE - Corrected image circle.

My back up is no longer working. The errors that come up are "The backup disk image “/Volumes/Data/apple’s iMac.sparsebundle” is already in use." Does anyone know what this means?
It means that there are bugs in the operating system.
Pull the power cord from the back of the Time Capsule
Count to ten
Plug the power cord back into the back of the Time Capsule
Report back if you need further assistance -
The backup disk image “/Volumes/Data/Connie’s iMac.sparsebundle” is already in use. Time Machine has stopped backing up. I deleted the selected disc and re-selected which one to use. Not sure what else to do.
Pull the power cord from the back of the Time Capsule
Count to 10
