The restore that never ends....Tecra A4

This is a continuing Saga...it's been a little over a month, and the owner/user (not me) is about to give up & buy another laptop to replace this one. Previous exchanges on this community are here:

I had some good input by Techman & Defender, then for the last month have been struggling with Customer Service to get the disks I ordered. Long story, but in the end, they reversed charges to my CC...and by the time they got things to work in their system....I ended up getting 3 restore disks...the last one delivered today. Apparently they are switching over their parts order system to a new one, and my order was caught in the fray of that adventure.
So now after doing many, many restores, I've come full circle and have exactly the same issues I had with the disks I created from the hidden hdd partition...where the "Applying Final Configuration" splashscreen  is up, Toshiba Assist is running per the Toshiba restore script, and the system freezes. There is no further disk activity, and the machine will only respond to a hard shutdown, by holding the power key. (did I mention how much I hate suspended fabric keys over hard micro keys on laptops?)
I'm certain there is no activity on the drive when this freezes, as the drive activity light works fine on this machine, and when things freeze, there is never any drive activity shown, heard, or felt.
The machine does not appear to be overheating, as the fan comes on every so often, but once things freeze up, the fan runs at a low constant speed, seemingly appropriate since the processor is doing little or nothing during the freeze.
* Machine never seems to complete setup. Runs "Toshiba America Systems" setup routine 'successfully' once, then runs setup two. Then runs setup three? and goes into freeze mode.
* Any time machine starts in Windows, it's freezes after about 1 or two minutes.
* Freeze occurs regardless of mouse movement OR when machine is not touched.
* Can only regain control of machine via hard power off.
* Can run the machine in safe mode. There is no freeze up.
* Can run the machine from a dos disk or BartPE. There is no freeze. Can keep it up for days without issue in these modes.
* Have formatted entire volume from P/E, attempting to force out any disk issues.
* Have run chkdsk /r from with no apparent change or fix
* Have replaced memory in machine with no change in result.
* Have run Fujitsu HDD utility from dos boot. Passed both quick & extensive tests.
* Have run MemTest, completing 4 complete cycles on memory with no failures
* Have run msconfig from safe mode, initiating minimal startup. When machine restarts in 'normal' Windows with minimal support, it still freezes after a minute or so.
* Even Chkdsk, when run from normal startup stalls at 26/27 percent...about the 1 to 2 minutes time.
* HOWEVER... Chkdsk is fine when run from BartPE disk.... chkdsk c: /r
Any help or suggestion would be GREATLY appreciated...I've never been so throughly flummoxed by a small piece of hardware...

Solved!

My only other suggestion is to check the memory on this unit.  Toshiba's are picky about getting good memory.  So my guess is this unit might have been upgraded.  Cehck the specs to see how much it comes with and see if there is more in it then that.  Remember some memory maybe on the bottom and some may be under the keyboard.
I suspose a BIOS update might be worth it.  (I didn't have time to look at the old threads...)

" When I did this, my library showed all the music I have "purchased" from itunes but did not have the music that I downloaded a long time ago through itunes from my old CDs."
    Correct.
" How can I get that music to show up in my library now on my new computer?  "
Copy it from your old computer or your backup copy of your old computer.
The sync is one way - computer to ipod.

  • TS4036 My old iPhone got damage and sprint changed it when I try to restore from iCloud I don't have the option to choose the latest back up instead it restored a version that is like 192 days old. How can I see the restore that I want?

    Hello
Today I got my iPhone 4s changed from sprint and when I enter my icloud information it gives me an old backup (196 days old) and I back up automatically all nights , there was no choice to select which one I wanted or anything. So I ended up loosing a lot of important information, all the pictures and everything that I did the past 196 days. I try to see if there is a place on the web that the back up data is displayed but I haven't found anything. I have a lot of important information on icloud, to the extend that I even pay for more space because I use the  iPhone as part of my work. Can someone please explain to me what has happen and if there is a way that I can recover my information? I am desperate it is very important. Thank you very much!

Once in a while the restore process seems to mess up.  What I don't understand is why you would perform a weekly restore.
At any rate, if you must restore, perform a device reset (settings>general>reset) and then you will have the opportunity to restore from iCloud.  Restore a device whenever it no longer works correctly, not just as a matter of maintenance.  If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

  • Csimport that never ends

    Good morning,
I am trying to import an ics calendar.
This calendar has been export with csexport.
The csexport takes a few seconds.
But the csimport never ends (after several hours).
    There are 8000 events.
A truss an the process show almost no nothing except:
    truss -p 16176
    brk(0x01B92320) = 0
    brk(0x01BA4320) = 0
    brk(0x01BB6320) = 0
    brk(0x01BC8320) = 0
    brk(0x01BDA320) = 0
    brk(0x01BEC320) = 0
I have open call 70642348 because I am stuck.
Would you know what I could do else to to import this ics file
    or to trace the problem?
Thanks in advance for your help.

    Hi,
I do not have other system, but I can provide you the ics file.
You should immediatly see my problem.
What I have find out also is that if I export with csexport rather than uwc,
I do not have this problem although the files are very similar. It might be good to provide both .ics files on the Sun support call -- the calendar exported from uwc, and exported using csexport.
    Thanks.

  • The iPod's never ending cycle of death

Every time I try to transfer my songs from iTunes to my iPod, the process just freezes at around 350 songs transferred. I eject the iPod but it remains frozen at the "Do Not Disconnect" screen. I restart the iPod and find out that all my songs are gone. However, the disk space I've used is equivalent to the amount of data I transferred. So I restore the iPod with iPod updater to remove all those corrupted songs that are not showing up. I start with 0 songs again and try my iTunes transfer again. And, of course, the same thing happens. I have absolutely no idea what to do. Any help would be appreciated.

    Hello all,
I am so sorry to hear the number of problems caused with the XP users after the installation of the latest iPod updater. I could be wrong, but I am a believer that it is not the software that kills your iPod, rather, it is just during the installation where something wrong happened and screwed either the iPod or the PC. iPod is just a hard disk, unless it is damaged, problems can be resolved by reformatting. iPod updater is a software, it needs to be installed on this hard disk to facilitate the communication between the user and the PC. During the installation process, the header of the hard disk might get stuck at a point (the iPod will show a sad iPod icon or folder icon with an exclamation mark - as it is no longer being able to communicate with the PC) and the process would only manage to get half way through. And regarding the problem where iPod does not manage to be mounted or recognized, it's simliar to a problem of some corrupted OS files.
To make the long story short, how can we fix this then? We can do a Reset or have a full battery charge and hope the iPod can complete the installation process. If fails, I will ask you a question - how are you going to deal with the hardware problem of the header of the hard disk got stuck? Hitting the back of the iPod with your Palm? (I do not know? please refer the following post)
    Mitch 751, "Newest update/iTunes kills iPod?!?" #7, 12:37am Oct 29, 2005 CDT
The key point now is how can we do the reformating and finish the installation process of iPod updater.
I always suggest user to plug their PC formatted iPod with a Mac or vice versa, as when you plug it with the computer, it will be treated as an external Hard Disk and allow you to do the Restore, as the format between PC and Mac is totally diffenent, it may force the stuck hard disk header to move. I did manage to fix many iPods this way, why dont you have a try yourself if you can find a Mac computer.

  • How do i permanently delete some of the shortcuts that have ended up on my preferences like good becomes bad etc

I have some shortcuts on my keyboard settings I have repeatedly tried to get rid of - like good becomes replaced with bad - but they keep returning again. How do I permanently delete these and where?

Back up all data before proceeding.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership, permissions, and access controls to the default. If you've intentionally set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it, but you do need to follow the instructions below.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user, and the one in question is not an administrator, then go to Step 2.
Triple-click anywhere in the following line on this page to select it:
    sudo find ~ $TMPDIR.. -exec chflags -h nouchg,nouappnd,noschg,nosappnd {} + -exec chown -h $UID {} + -exec chmod +rw {} + -exec chmod -h -N {} + -type d -exec chmod -h +x {} + 2>&-
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command may take several minutes to run, depending on how many files you have. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1, if you prefer not to take it, or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Start up in Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
              Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open. In that window, type this:
    resetp
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not going to reset a password.
Select your startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select
               ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.

  • Can I undo the restore that was preformed on my iPhone4?

I hooked my new iPhone 4 up to my laptop and was asked if I wanted to restore from the last time. I had an iPhone 3 years ago. I realize that I should've clicked the button to start as though I'd never had the previous one. Is there a way to undo this? Without undoing all that I had set up in all the various settings areas before?

No, I just got the phone yesterday. Last night it need to be charged and I hooked it up to my laptop. I had forgotten that I even still had iTunes on my laptop. Thanks, I had a feeling there was nothing to be done. I'll just work though the "bugs" of my old settings as the crop up.

  • Exception handling that never ends...

    Hi,
I've been putting the finishing touches on a project I'm working on, and right now I'm "fixing" some of the error handling. I realized that lots of times when I catch an exception, the program never returns to where it left off. Most of these errors would normally be fatal, but since it's important that this particular application does not terminate (ever) I basically just call a method in the main class that resets the application.
The problem, I'm thinking, is that java keeps a place on the stack to return to the statement after the error occurred -- and since this will never happen, I can imagine a lot of unnecessary placeholders eventually overflowing the stack. This would be bad since it's our plan to have this application running on our shop floor for days/months/years at a time with minimal intervention!
But I'm fairly new to java, and maybe I'm just paranoid. Is my understanding of this situation correct? Can I avoid it?
    Thanks for any input.

Okay, here is some code. By the way, only on unrecoverable errors do I want to log the user off and reset the application. The reason I'm doing this is because 1) I don't want the application to exit 2) It's possible that the problem is with that particular users account, and the next user might be okay. This is an application running in a kiosk where people will be lining up to use it, and if it can at all stay up it ought to!
One final note before I paste in the code... My application is admittedly not as robust as it could be, but only because my database interface is really an XML API provided by a third-party. The API is limited, so there are only so many things I can do to recover from an error!
Ok, here's some code. It's not my actual application since that would be thousands of lines of code, but it's an example application I set up that illustrates my problem. It simulates a logon and tries to do 3 transactions but fails on the second one. At that point I would like it to simply "reset" itself for the next user and never do the third transaction, but the third transaction inevitably gets done. What do you think?

    HI,
If your old version of iTunes is still working - then I sugest you stick with that.
iTunes 11 is a lousy update - It will not retain your playlists, you can't find and delete duplicates... and a whole arry of oyher issues. (have a look around this forum to see how many issues IT11 gives people)
Just a friendly advise and warning :-)

  • The order that never arrives

BT is good. At apologising - but nothing else. I have a saga that has been going on since 7 January. Let me explain...
I received an email from BT to move my broadmand to them, Infinity package with unlimited downlaods at up to 80Gb etc. and they would be kind enough to also give me £125 Sainsbury's vouchers in return. I have heard BT horror stories before, so was naturally wary. However a fiew reviews on the internet convinced me they had perhaps mended their ways and I should try. I saw the fibre exchange outside my house (about 30m away) so I knew I was in for good speeds. On 7 January 2015 I took the step and placed the order online, supplying the MAC on the same day from my current provider. I received an email confirming a switchover on 4 February.
    Then it all began...
About 3 weeks later I got another email offering high speed broadband with £125 vouchers. This prompted me to check on the status of my order since I hadn't heard any more. The web site said I had no order. I called BT help line and I was told the order had stalled for some reason (no explanation offered) and they would have to start the process all over again, and it would take another month. Needless to say, I was less than impressed and ranted a bit about the extra delay as my daughter was planning a movie sleepover with friends, and the high speed broadmand timing was perfect on the original order.
After jumping through various hoops, I was informed they would send me a router and connect the phone on 4 February (I was already with BT!) and the broadband on 5 February. I accepted this. I was home on 5 February and saw the Openreach team working in the box. My phone line went down, and about 30 minutes later my existing broadband died. "Fine" I thought - they will now connect me to BT. I unplugged my router and plugged in my new HomeHub 5. I looked a little later and the team had leaft. I waited. And waited. And waited. By the evening I suspected something was wrong and called BT on my mobile. (I now had no phone or internet.) Now things get vague. I must have called a few times every day from Thursday, only to be told every time that a fault on the line had been logged, and they had a team assigned to diagnose the fault. I diagnosed it for them - the phone was working, they came, they broke it, they left. No luck - they said within 10 days it would be fixed!
(I must point out here that I was organising a charity event for the following week, and my wife was arranging job interviews, and in the middle of this we now had no phone and no internet. Absolute disaster.)
Don't get me wrong. BT was very apologetic, every time I called, a few times a day. But their apologies and promises to fix the fault didn't help. Finally on the Monday they send another Openreach chap out and he got the phone line working, but not the internet. He had no authorisation to look at the broadband. He was rather horrified at the story so far. I called BT again that evening (from the now working phone) to chase the broadband. I was informed someone would call the next day to confirm the line was working! No matter how many times I told him I was talking on the very phone they wanted to check, the stroy was still the same. He said they would check the line and connect the internet the next day once the line was proven.
The next evening no one had called re the internet (my daughter did take a call earlier in the day when the checked the line.) I called again and was informed (again) they had to check the line the next day and then they would connect the internet. All this between the BT apology line, of course. I was now losing the iwll to live. All I wanted was to get internet so I could continue with my emails. Somewhere between this call and the previous one I was informed that my broadmand had been ordered and I should return the router they sent me. They would restart a new order and would send me a new router. I gave up.
On the Wednesday I was at work and decided to try again with live chat to BT. After going through the whole story again, and getting more apologies, I was told I should talk to the Order Management Team. This finally appeared to be progress. I spoke to a very friendly guy who apologised profusely for the mess I was in. He also confirmed that there was a problem in the exchange outside my house when they came to connect the new system, and that the system then autmatically cancels the order! Go figure. They shouldn't have left my phone disconnected, however. He said he would personally fasttrack my order but I needed to supply a new MAC as mine had now expired. Thinking I was finally getting somewhere, I agreed.
Silly me - this is BT after all.
I tried to get a new MAC, but was informed I couldn't get one as there was already "a PSTN cease order in progress on the line." Calling BT again, I was informed it was because they were already taking action themselves, and that I should stand down - everything was in hand.
One additional "good" bit of information I did receive was that tests on the line showed I still had internet - my previous provider was still active and I should put back my old router! After work I did connect my router and it worked! So now I at least had a working phone and my original internet back. (Why wasn't I told this on the Monday when the first fixed the line?)
Stupidly trusting BT again, and as I was up to my neck in the charity event I was running, I put all this out of my mind until this morning- over a week after I was told all was in hand. I called BT to check on progress. Surprise surprise! There was NO ORDER. I was told I had to place another order. They were even surprised I had returned my previous router - after I was informed I had been asked to and they even sent a returns bag for it! This time I was promised by the chap I spoke to that he would personally handle the order and make sure it went through - after I had obtained another MAC from my current provider.
Of course I now have absolutely no faith in BT or their ability to offer me broadband. I will be signing up with their competition, and I will be taking my phone along elsewhere too. I just wish there was someone I could talk to that understood the issue through all this, rather than a call centre in India with many apologies and no progress.
It's the 21sy century. How hard is it to do this? They do it every day. You would think they would get it right by now.
    Bye bye BT
    Haydn

  • Freezing That Never Ends...

I just got my Ipod exchanged at the apple store, so it should have no pre-existing problems with it. I just put songs on it and tried to disconnect it, but it froze. The screen isnt blinking like it should. I reset it and the same thing happens, If you reset then take it off computer it freezes in the menus. I tried to restore it to factory settings, and it worked after I set all of the updating to manual. now I put songs back on and the same thing keeps happening. Any ideas?

If resetting and restoring don't help, I don't think you have much option but to return it yet again.

  • Random buffering that never ends [Flash/HTML5]

So, interesting opportunity to learn something new! ;)
What is wrong: buffering. At first I thought I have problems with Flash alone, but this isn't true. Any video [be it on Youtube or Twitch, Flash player or HTML5 player, doesn't matter] randomly will stop. I will see the buffer "icon" and... nothing happens. Ever. I can leave it for as long as I want, it will not budge.
On Twitch.tv it's a bit different, it will pause the stream for a solid minute and then "restart" itself.
Cleared cache, session files, updated Flash, used Ccleaner as well. Don't want to go through creating a new profile yet (a bit of a hassle), trying to figure out what might be causing the issue. As I said, it's very random, sometimes happens in short video on Youtube, sometimes I can watch long videos without much problem.
And no, my internet is not the issue, double checked on that.
    Any ideas?

  • The questions, they never end

So all of you tracking my endless quest to get my site right, I appreciate the help to this point, but with every fix a new problem arises.
I finally figured how to use MassReplaceit to install Statcounter. Very easy once you get the hang of it. Check out my home page though.
    www.msullivanphoto.com
the counter extended the bottom of the page so I now need to use the scroll bar to get the bottom and it's on th efar left corner. Any suggestions how to raise it and center? I'm assuming I can put it higher in the script text to raise it, but thought I'd run it by the pros first.:)

I only see the counter on your front page and it looks like it's at about the right level, so I assume that you figured out the vertical placement. As far as the centering goes, you can add a couple of enclosing tags around the counter code...
    [p align="center"> <----put your counter code here----></p]
(replace the first and last [ and ] with < and > to make the code work!)
    This should do the trick...
