Themes/ Video FX -letterbox

Purchased The Missing Manual and it talks about many different themes My version of iMovie 6 shows only 4 am I missing some or where can I get more ??
VidoFx letterbox will not work end up with black screen have tried adjusting everything ??
Thanks

Ok so I ran a few experiments and I did discover that what version the project was first made with doesn't matter. If you're saving your project on an external drive then that might be the problem. Here's what I did to find this out.
First I made a new project and saved it in my home volume, Imported a clip from the camera and added the slow down effect. It worked. Then I made a new project and saved it on my external drive, imported the same footage and it did not work. Finally I copied a project from my external to internal and tried to add the slow effect to the scenes that were not working before. This time they worked.

  • Forcing video to letterbox?

I'm unable to force video to display letterboxed.
Details: working with Anamorphic DV source in DVDSP4 compressed to 16x9 MPEG2 via Compressor 2. Checking 16x9 letterbox in Inspector's track display options. DVDSP recognizes asset as 16x9. Simulator and DVD Player display as 16x9, but formatted video when diplayed on a set top player won't force the video to letterbox. Instead it displays "squeezed".
What's going on here? Never had this problem with DVDSP 2. What am I missing?
    Many TIA,
    eric

    Yeah, you're right!
I actually figured this out when I brought a third set top box into my office. I suppose I shouldn't have taken for granted that either of the other 2 players would be properly set up .
    Thanks Steve.

  • "fake" 16:9 video gets letterboxed

    Hi,
I have a JVC Digital Video camcorder (GR-DVP5). I shot a video partly with 16:9 aspect ratio, which for this camcorder basically means, that it uses only part of the sensor to get (to fake) the correct aspect ratio (4:3 with two black stripes).
When I import the DV video into iMovie, the 4:3 scenes are imported OK, but the 16:9 scenes of the video get (stretched and) letterboxed and it looks like the content should be stretched vertically to fill the full height of the video instead of the black stripes.
Apparently Imovie falsly recognizes the video as 16:9 and not as 4:3 with two black stripes
Changing the project settings from 16:9 to 4:3 doesnt "unstretch", but only cut some of the left and right hand side of the scene. Using crop or fit basically does the same.
I guess, if I can force Imovie in accepting the total video as a 4:3 format (what it basically is), the problem would be solved
Any idea how I can do that? Or any other ideas how to solve the problem.
    Kind regards, Raymond

I've found a cure for this bug!! As apple support on the phone convinced me this realy was a bug, there is no way to fix it within Imovie, (and no one seems to have a reaction at all ... ), I checked the Apple site for downloads. There I found MovieConverter Studio. A shareware program which can take the simulated 16:9 DV input and make it into a DV input Imovie recognizes as 4:3.
It can do a lot more, but it does solve my problem.
    Regards Raymond

  • 4:3 video to letterbox

I have some 4:3 video and some 16:9 letterbox video. I need to add the letterbox boxes to the top and the bottom of the 4:3 video to make it look like it was shot that way. I know I will loose my framing and whatnot but that is somewhat acceptable. I was thinking about just throwing a black matte over the video cropped appropriately at the top and bottom. My question is - what size does it have to be at the top and bottom to make it line up with other letterbox video?

OK. let's build the alpha channel first.
In Photoshop, select File > New and choose the appropriate 4:3 frame for your local TV Standard, fill color should be white.
Repeat the above and choose the widescreen variant this time. Press Shift and F5 keys together and fill with black.
Choose the Move tool. Press Shift and drag the black widescreen frame onto the white 4:3 frame. This will center the black frame exactly.
Press command and T to get Free Transform mode. Click the Lock Aspect Ratio button in the Transform toolbar at the top of your screen:
In one of the numeric boxes next to the Lock Aspect Ratio button, enter 75.4 and press Return twice.
Go to Layers > Flatten Image. Select the Magic Wand tool and click the white area at the top of your picture. Right click and choose Add to Selection in the white area at the bottom.
Open the Channels pallette and click the Save as Selection Button:
Click the eye next to RGB so that only the alpha layer is visible.
Now we need the black fill for the mask. Choose Layer > New Layer. Press Shift and F5. Fill with black.
Go to the Save Dialog. Change the file type to TIFF. Uncheck "Layers" but make sure "Alpha Channel" is checked on.
Import into FCP. The mask should composite automatically on V2 when you drag it to the timeline or press F12, leaving the 4:3 video clip underneath, which can be reframed to your taste.
Have fun and good luck with your project.

  • Best method to combine Instant Movie (Theme) with regular video?

I’m creating a video and I would like to use a theme for a slideshow, yet leave the rest of the video (first 16 minutes) alone. I currently have two separate projects, one with my regular video footage and one project with the instant movie theme.  So, if there is a way to copy and paste one project into another that would be perfect, yet I have not seen that option. What is the best way to accomplish this? I was thinking I could export the instant movie and then add the media to my existing project, yet I’m not sure what format to use so I don’t lose quality. The video is AVCHD (1920 x 1024), and I would eventually like to burn everything to a Blue-ray disc when I get a burner, yet for now DVD will do. Thoughts?

I like the idea of doing everything in one project, yet I’m guessing I would have an issue with doing so since the video in the timeline has been edited and the video within the available media section is the raw video (I think that is correct).  However, this should work great for the stills, yet I’m not sure about the video.
My main concern is torching the non-theme video by applying a theme…
To do what you are saying; would I simply select the images (hold down CTRL and select or smart tag them?) from the media selection screen within the interface and…?

  • True Widescreen Video on iPod Classic

Hi there, I have a new iPod classic and I've just put some videos on it. They are widescreen videos and they even show up as widescreen pics on their little thumbnails in the iPod's list of videos. However when I play them they are stretched to fit the screen and everyone's faces etc are stretched vertically.
The 'Fit to Screen' option is OFF. Toggling the 'Widescreen' option on or off doesn't change anything either.
The only reason I can think is that these are true widescreen videos, i.e. they are not letterboxed into a 4:3 ratio with black bars; they are actually in a 16:9 ratio with no black bars. Could it be that the iPod needs them to be letterboxed...?
    Please help
    Thanks,
    Josh

I think your guess is correct. In my very limited endeavors into converting video for my iPod, that 16:9 was some bad news. When I was using ImToo to convert, I did have to have it set to letterbox. Now I use Videora. When I was using ImToo and things went wrong with 16:9 letterbox, there was nothing to be done but re-convert from the original file in a stochastic process hoping to stumble on a proper aspect. Now I just use settings for Videora I found on the net and took me thinking right out of the equation! Since that isn't an option for you I'm afraid you'll have to suffer it or reacquire from a new source. However, I may be wrong. I am not all that knowledgeable. I just didn't want you to go unanswered and thought I'd share my limited experience.

  • IPod Video Woes? - Nero Recode 2 Works Great!

Well, like many of you, I've tried to convert video unsuccessfully to my iPod. I've tried Videora, PSP Video 9 and a few other programs. Not ONE of these programs has created a successful video that can be ported to the iPod (even though, for some, that's ALL they are advertised to do). The Videora iPod Converter is a program to convert, yet it doesn't work for me AT ALL... even using the SP modes. Sure, it loads into iTunes fine, but getting it to load into the actual iPod is another, sad, sad story! LOL!
We all are aware that, as of right now, the H.264 codec doesn't seem to be working for many of us and MPEG-4 is, so I finally got my iPod and tried Nero Recode 2 today (part of the Nero 7 Ultra Edition).
Using Nero Recode 2, I was successful in not only creating 320x240 files that loaded into iTunes, but they also loaded right into my new iPod with no playback problems, errors, or skipping. I used a 1.78:1 16:9 source (a DVD that was ripped to my hard drive) and loaded it into Nero using the following settings:
In AUDIO #1 I set it to:
STEREO (CUSTOM PROFILE) LC (LOW COMPLEXITY) NERO DIGITAL AUDIO @ 48,000 Hz and 160 kbit/s
For VIDEO the Setting I used the slider to set the "Video Quality" to 764.6 Kbps
Make sure you UNCHECK the "Fit to Target" box and then click on the VIDEO button on the right (underneath the CHAPTER button). Since it was an anamorphic DVD I was using, I disabled "Deinterlace", disabled "Crop" and I resized to 320x240 and checked the LETTERBOXING (SQUARE PIXEL) box. Checking this box is necessary with anamorphic material so that the final file you create will be properly letterboxed (not stretched) in the 320x240 display on the iPod (it'll have the black bars properly placed at the top and bottom of the video).
Click NEXT after adjusting the above settings...
In NERO DIGITAL SETTINGS, make sure EXPERT MODE is checked.
    Encoding Method = High-Quality Encoding (2 pass)
    Quality/Speed = Extra Quality
Advanced = Check "Simple Profile (QuickTime Compatibility)"
Then hit BURN and come back in a couple hours.
Your file should be done and ready to load onto your iPod with very nice picture and sound quality and in the proper aspect ratio for the iPod screen.
The ONLY thing I wish Nero Recode could do is, like in Videora and PSP Video 9, raise the volume level of the encoded sound. I watched my movie through the headphones on my iPod and it sounded great, but I had the volume turned all the way up to the max. I wish there was a setting to boost the audio a bit, but at least the videos actually WORK!
I hope this helps you all.
I have used the above settings for three films so far and all are fine. They range between 600-800 meg in size. That's big, but I have a 60 gig iPod, so I have plenty of room. If you want smaller files, maybe try 128kbit/s instead of 160 kbit/s for the audio and lower the video bit rate slider a bit.

I have converted 6 movies now with Nero Recode 2 and transferred them to my iPod. The audio ISN'T that low on any of them. As a matter of fact, the audio is perfectly acceptible, but the volume is turned all the way up. At the max volume setting, the audio is at just about the point where my ears want to turn it down, but it's OK.
The main reason why I wish the audio could be boosted a little is because, if the movies are slightly low and I turn up the volume, then I STOP watching a movie and switch to music, the music might be soooo loud, it'll blast my ears because of the volume differences between the two formats (this happened last night and it was certainly annoying). People might forget to turn down the volume when switching programs/audio.
So far NO movie convert app has got all the bells and whistles to be a perfect solution for converting movies.
NERO RECODE works, but lacks a volume adjustment in the files. It also allows you to letterbox your source video properly for the iPod display if you use anamorphic widescreen videos. It also imports DVD VOB files perfectly, with no sync issues.
VIDEORA IPOD CONVERTER does have a volume adjustment capability, but doesn't adjust the 16:9 image to add letterboxing bars for proper playback on the iPods 320x240 screen. It would work for full-screen material, I guess, but it still doesn't work for me on my system for some reason, even in MPEG4 SP mode. The resulting video files DO load into iTunes and can be played on my computer, but not on the iPod. When loading the files to the iPod, the audio plays... the movies don't. Some people are saying Videora works for them, but I can't get anything to play on my iPod using the SP/320x240/768/128 MPEG4 profile. Must have something to do with the fact that I'm using VOB files, maybe?
I've tried PSP VIDEO 9, to no avail, as well...
I guess I could go the whole TMPGENC to 320x240 route and adjust the audio there, but that would mean I'd have to rip and re-encode the video to MPEG2 first, THEN covert again to the iPod MPEG4 format. That would mean re-encoding the audio/video twice (degrading the video even more than it would be otherwise) and it would take MUCH longer to do. But, this being said, it might be the steps I'd need to take to actually get Videora iPod Converter to work properly.
Someone needs to create a program that successfully converts DVD movies directly from the VOB file structure, allows up to 160kbits/s encoding on the audio (as well as audio volume adjustment) and that allows for you to reformat the video to 320x240 letterbox format for 16:9 anamorphic materials. Nero Recode 2 is ALMOST perfect... but not quite... it does do everything except allow volume adjustments in the final MP4 file.
No matter how much people are touting Videora iPod Converter, I just cannot get it to work successfully for what I need. Even if I found a solution to the problem, Videora CANNOT reformat stretched 16:9 anamorphic videos to letterboxed format, like Nero can. Sure, it can CROP... but it cannot RESIZE. I do not want to watch stretched, distorted video on my iPod.

  • Why are exported movies letterboxed?

I'm looking at the video clips I imported into my computer, and they are the same aspect ratio as my screen, filling it up when I choose to play it in Full Screen. However, once I put the video in Premiere and then export it, the video becomes letterboxed, both vertically and horizontally, so that when I play Full Screen, the video is smaller and surrounded by a black frame.
Why does it do this? And how do I change it so that it stops letterboxing my movies? Any help would be appreciated.
PS I don't really know if this is still considered letterboxing.

When I started the project I just took whatever the default settings were, which as I'm checking now is NTSC-DV-Standard 48kHz. I'm looking more into it since you suggested this, so I'll let you know if I find anything else.
As for how I got the video. It's from my Canon Vixia HG20. I imported them to my computer first, and then used Premiere to take the files that were already in my computer. As I stated in this thread: http://forums.adobe.com/message/3360868#3360868 , I couldn't import directly from the camcorder to Premiere.

  • Problems using the letterbox filter

    Hello,
I am having a problem compressing from Final Cut via Compressor into an Mpeg-1 file. I shot (and edited) in 16:9 but the Mpeg-1 files turn out squeezed up in 4:3.
I was advised that the letterbox filter would be a way round it but when I go into the Inspector window and eventually find a way to stop all the settings being greyed out, when I change them and save them, including selecting letterbox filter, then submit the job, nothing is any different. The finished mpeg is still squeezed into 4:3 with no letterbox.
Any advice that would help me solve this problem? Unfortunately I don’t know Compressor very well (as is probably obvious) and don’t find it at all easy to work out.
    Many thanks in advance,
    Sasha

If you're looking at a setting in the Inspector, you're looking at one of two things; the original setting from the "Settings" window-- this one is not modifiable-- or the modifiable copy of that setting that you're using on your asset (the video you're compressing, in the batch window). Click on the setting over your video in the batch window to work with the modifiable version.
A good "basics of Compressor" tutorial might benefit you. Apple has a few on their website.

  • Mixing Themes

    Hi
I wanted to use the Theatre Theme with the music from the Montage Theme. Is that possible. Is the file buried somewhere in the library?
2nd Question the Montage theme won't import chapter markers. Is it for pictures or video without chapter markers? I want to pring in jpgs for the moving Graphics and then have the movie seperate, but I either replace the jpg with the video or vice versa but I can't get both and no menu pops up. What gives?
    Thanks
    Enio

Yes you can do that but it will take a little doing because the music inside the background movie file that is used for the theme, BackgroundMovie.NTSC.mov.
The easiest way to get to the music is to select it in iDVD and make if a favorite by opening the Settings pane and click on the Save as Favorite button at the bottom. Give it a distinctive name and do not select the Shared for All Users checkbox option. A copy will then be placed in your User/Library/iDVD/Favorites folder. Drag it to the desktop and Control-click on it. Select the Show Package Contents option and navigate down to the 07_Montage.theme/Contents/Resources folder where the movie file will be.
Drag the movie file to the desktop. If you have QT Pro you can extract the audio for the movie file. If you don't have QT Pro, import the movie into iMovie, extract the audio, delete the video portion and save the project. Now open the iMovie project file as you did the theme file and look for the audio track which should be titled Extracted Audio 01.aiff.
If you want to create a special theme with the audio built in you can find the Theater Them video file, import it into iMovie, extract and delete the audio and then import the audio from the Montage theme. Now save the movie as a QT movie and replace the original QT movie in the Theater theme. Be sure to be working on a copy of the Theater theme. When you're done you can name that theme package anything you'd like and place it in the Favorites folder I mentioned earlier.
Hope this has been of some help. Good luck.

  • Theme Rendering picks up desktop image & open windows?

When I 'apply' a theme in iMovie (like the Open - Road Trip theme,)something very odd happens - the rendered result flickers between the expected theme video output and a garbled version of my desktop background and any other windows I may have open. It happens every time. I've tried deleting preferences and reinstalling iM but no good. Working solely off of the internal HD, have ample space (@50% free.) Not seeing any issues in any other application. Has anybody seen this or have any suggestions?

I haven't tried burning a DVD but have exported to different file types (.mov & .mpg). The weird video I'm seeing in the timeline is what shows up in the output. i.e. Down to the frame, I can see the same distorted background image.

  • Reducing video file/picture size

I just upgraded to the 5 from the 4g and while the bump in quality is nice, a few MB a second when recording video is pretty staggering. I know it's suggested to convert the mov file to mp4 but is there any way to set the ipod to record in just 720 for example to save on file size? Same question applies to taking pictures, as the camera itself isn't good enough to warrant a need for pictures the size it produces it'd be much nicer to have it set to about half the default size so I can avoid resizing pictures I want to keep.

There is no way to reduce/change the resolution of video or still photos.
If you email them video yo can select the resolution of photos and it reduces the resolution of videos.

  • Sports Team Editor: How do I get the players to display in the sports theme?

How do I get the players to display in the sports theme video? I entered the team and players using the sports team editor. Then clicked done and update. But when I play the video only the first players profile shows up. I have the rest of the video done, this is the one remaining mystery. Thank you.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, or by a peripheral device.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Post for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Special Effects - Dallas Theme

I am new to iMovie 09. I would like to create an opening clip for my home movies that looks like the opening of the Dallas TV show. Adding the clips and the music are the easy steps. How can I add the special effects of sliding the pictures and the three pane view when listing the characters?
Any help from anyone would be great. I am just not getting it.. The following is the Dallas Theme video clip from Youtube...
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_R8WS-j7SKA

    Welcome Dak991 to the iMovie boards ..
I dare to say: no chance with iMovie...
the vertical movin' split-screen as in your example contains video - so, you need two video tracks at last to accomplish such an effect (and a mask for size and borders) => easy with FinalCutExpress, NoGo with a 20$toy tool as iMovie
if you would use stills/pics/photo, you could probably 'fake' it with some combo of Ken Burns over a pre-produced, very wide still and greenscreen... but no movin' images...
