Thesaurus / Dictionary

Dear All,
I have a program that do the following
1. User enters key word(s)
2. The program surfs the website (s) to bring documents that are more relevant.
3.Another program will extract all the important words from those documents. Calculate the term frequency and also the document frequency.
I need to do the following
From those extracted words I need to create a thesaurus table in the following form
Index : Term
0 : Computer
0 : Computers
1 : Data
2 : Database
2 : Databases
Note: Similar Terms should have same index.
Can I use the term frequency/ document frequency to come up with the index value??
Looking for your smart ideas!!!
Cheers,
--Vj

You will probabley want to use the java.util.Hashtable
class to store your "important words". If this is a client application (It does not reside on the server that the html files are on) you will need to open up a socket on port 80 of the server to request the webpages from the server. Then strip out all HTML tags and store the A HREF tags in a vector. You can then go through the document a look for "important" words. Then go to each of the sites in your vector of links.

Does anybody know some?(Online or offline)
I don't like usual dictionaries, I wanna know mean not translate.
If somebody knows something like please share(:
    Sorry my English.

When a single word search term is entered into the US version of Google, at the top of the results page it says something like
    Results 1 - 10 of about 228,000,000 for dictionary [definition]. (0.11 seconds)
Clicking on "definition" will take me to a dictionary definition.
Arch web sites primarily use US English. Two American flavored dictionaries are dictionary.com at http://dictionary.reference.com/ and Merriam-Webster, http://www.merriam-webster.com/ My browser's javascript blocker and ad blocker are very busy at the Merriam-Webster site.
    For a more British-flavoured dictionary, try http://dictionary.cambridge.org/.
There is also WordWeb, http://wordweb.info/free/, a very good free application for MS Windows, but I don't know if it will run using Wine.

  • How can I make the thesaurus work for spanish words?

I have been using pages for about 4 months now, and usually I use it in english. I am currently writing a document in spanish but I can't manage to make the thesaurus, dictionary and wikipedia work for spanish words. I really need this to find synonyms.
Any idea what do I need to do? I don't want to change the whole pages into spanish, nor I want the spanish spell check (I know how to do that), I only need the thesaurus.

    Dear me, doesn't Español work?

  • Dictionary application missing and unable to reinstall it

I´ve used the Dictionary app. off and on in the past and it worked fine. Recently, it stopped working and then disappeared altogether. The Thesaurus-Dictionary widget worked until I started trying to recoup the Dictionary.app and that's now been lost too. Every attempt at reinstalling has failed. The system tells me it's been installed, the Oxford package makes it to the Receipt section but there's no Dictionary.app entry anywhere to be found. I verified the disk and permissions and everything there's OK. Any suggestions?

I decided to finish off what I started... I'd forgotten I'd posted the question and as I was very much in need of the dictionary I ended up schlepping my Mac to the Apple Store to see if they could fix it. They had to do something which they wouldn't explain to me to get it back into the system. It didn't seem like a simple task as they got some other equipment from the storage room to do it.

  • How to access built in dictionaries

My MacBook Pro running OS 10.8.5 has eleven built-in dictionaries and thesauruses in the Library.
    MacBook HD > Library > Dictionary > Apple Dictionary.dictionary
MacBook HD > Library > Dictionary > Diccionario General de la Lengua Española Vox.dictionary
MacBook HD > Library > Dictionary > Duden Dictionary Data Set I.dictionary
MacBook HD > Library > Dictionary > Multidictionnaire de la langue française.dictionary
MacBook HD > Library > Dictionary > New Oxford American Dictionary.dictionary
    MacBook HD > Library > Dictionary > Oxford American Writer's Thesaurus.dictionary
MacBook HD > Library > Dictionary > Oxford Dictionary of English.dictionary
MacBook HD > Library > Dictionary > Oxford Thesaurus of English.dictionary
MacBook HD > Library > Dictionary > Sanseido Super Daijirin.dictionary
    MacBook HD > Library > Dictionary > Sanseido The WISDOM English-Japanese Japanese-English Dictionary.dictionary
MacBook HD > Library > Dictionary > The Standard Dictionary of Contemporary Chinese.dictionary
I can find no app on my Mac for accessing or activating any of these dictionaries, not even as Services. I especially wish to open the New Oxford American Dictionary. Instead, I have been using the WordBook app, which suffices, but I would like to know how to access or open all these built-in dictionaries, too.
If you know what to do, please let me know. Thanks!

Unless your install is botched and it has somehow gone missing, you should find Dictionary.app in Finder > Go > Applications, and you select which dictionaries to activate in its Preferences.  The standard way to look up word is by Control clicking on a word and selecting Look Up xxxxx.
Let us know if this does not work for you.

  • Right mouse click in word for mac

i just bought a g-5 intel core duo and i love it. though i am an experienced mac user this is my first time with the mighty mouse and i miss the right mouse click when i am in word for mac (2004): with my old mouse i could right mouse click on a word and get immediately into the thesaurus/dictionary, whereas with the one-click mighty mouse i have to go to tools, then thesaurus or dictionary, which takes several clicks. is it possible to program the mighty mouse so that i can get with one click to the thesaurus dictionary? thanks in advance. mmvski from amsteram

Are you trying to do this in Word for Mac or Word for Windows?
The Mighty Mouse buttons can be programmed on Mac OS X using Apple menu --> System Preferences --> Keyboard & Mouse.
On Windows go to Start --> Control Panels --> Mouse.
    Hope this helps! bill

  • My BlackBerry has started dieing on me...

To anyone out there who can help me...
Basically, my prized BB has started to fail on me. Yesterday the A and R buttons were pressing strangely (sometimes they wouldn't type, sometimes they'd provide 2 letters instead of one), and today, my R/3 button has completely stopped working. Also, for some reason I cannot hold Alt whilst typing anymore - meaning I have to "Alt" "m" "Alt" "m" "Alt" "m" just to get "..." ... As you can imagine, this is not the nicest of things to happen, especially as most numbers have a 3 in and lots of words have an R in... I've added all the data that I can think to add to speed up the process... I'd provide a photo, but how do you show a photo of buttons not working... Please help me - I've had my phone for almost a year now on a 2-year contract, and it's served me very well! If there's anything else you want me to find out and tell you, just ask <(^_^)>
    Thanks again!

... ok, this is crazy... I think my BB is psychic... within 2 minutes of me opening this page, it fixed itself =_="" I've just realised that I can emulate the problem caused if I hold down a different key and try to use "Alt"+"M" for ".", for example... So I think what's probably happened (but I have NO idea why or how to fix it) is that my "R" button got stuck down, meaning I couldn't write "R" because it was already being pressed, and the alt wasn't holding down properly because there was already a different key being held down... I have no idea if that's any help to you, but good luck <(^_^)>

  • Writing Tools Dictionary Thesaurus Doesn't Work or Pop Up

This has been driving me crazy for months. If I want to look up a word or get thesaurs recommendations, I right click a Word in Pages and the dictionary pop up is revealed. Except, it doesn't. At least not all the time.
I can't put my finger on when or why, but it's quirky and annoying. The beauty of the popup contextual menu is to quickly get work done. Sometimes I want to get a definition or perhaps choose a word from the thesaurus. But I can't
Even choosing the selection from the drop down menu does nothing. The computer just sits there.
I could log on tomorrow and perhaps start a new document and it will. This is so darn simple it should work all the time.
Anyone else have this issue? What's the fix?

Dictionary is an application which you can find in the Application folder.
If you can't make it work the way I have described it you are doing something wrong.

  • Microsoft Word 2008 - Tool icons such as Dictionary/Thesaurus

Hi guys i have a small problem with this, the only way i can display these tools (temporarily) is by clicking a double right arrow on the screen, the kind which you have when you don't have enough space i think. There are gaps between centre, justify, font size etc so how would i go about inserting the dictionary + thesaurus icon in the toolbar. View - Toolbar doesn't seem to help! Incidentally i personally think the 2004 version was better. Thank you all.

  • Widget Request: Dictionary / Thesaurus

    Widget Request: Dictionary / Thesaurus
I would love to see Dictionary / Thesaurus from OS X come to the iPhone. I know that Apple will more then likely bring more widgets to the iPhone, but I for one would like to see this as one of the first.

The lack of a dictionary on the iPhone was the only thing that gave me pause. (OK. I paused for no MMS too.) I have a truly incredible dictionary on my Treo. Not only would I love to see the Apple Dictionary/Thesaurus on my iPhone but I'd like to see Apple improve the Dictionary with more words and with pronunciations and etymologies. Text is cheap, and I've never been able to figure out why I have a better dictionary on my Treo than on my Mac.

  • Accessing Dictionary / Thesaurus with Contextual Menu

If I have the Dictionary Application selected in the preferences, when I control click on a word, I get only the dictionary or the thesaurus (depending on the order I set in the preferences), but not both. If I have the Dictionary Panel selected in the preferences, after the panel appears, I click “more”, then I’ll have both the dictionary and the thesaurus. Am I missing something, because it would be nice to have the Dictionary Application come up right away with both?
    Steve Dutton

    Hi, Steve.
Your post is a little hard to follow since you've not quite got the terminology correct. The short answer is that "Look up in Dictionary" is "working as designed."
Let's see if I can clarify what's happening:
    1. In Dictionary > Preferences, under Contextual Menu, if you select "Open Dictionary application" then when you Control-click a selected word and select "Look up in Dictionary" in the contextual menu, it launches the Dictionary application and displays either the definition or thesaurus entry, depending on which is first in the list at the top of Dictionary Preferences.
    2. In Dictionary > Preferences, under Contextual Menu, if you select "Open Dictionary panel" then when you Control-click a selected word and select "Look up in Dictionary" in the contextual menu, a tiny window (the Dictionary panel opens showing either the definition or the thesaurus entry, depending on which is first in the list at the top of Dictionary Preferences. If you click More, this launches the Dictionary application, enabling you to see both the definition and thesaurus entries in one Dictionary application window.
How the "Look up in Dictionary" contextual menu choice works on selected text depends on the setting of the Contextual Menu option in Dictionary Preferences and the first item in the list the top of those Preferences, as follows:
    • The Dictionary panel shows only one of the items for the selected text — definition or thesaurus entry — i.e. whichever is first in the list at the top of Dictionary Preferences. One then has to click More to see both definition and thesaurus entry in a window in the Dictionary application
    • The Dictionary application likewise shows only one of the items for the selected text — definition or thesaurus entry —  i.e. whichever is first in the list at the top of Dictionary Preferences.
Note that if you make changes in Dictionary's Preferences, you have to close the Dictionary Preferences for the changes to take effect.
It appears one only receives both the definition and thesaurus entry for a word simultaneously if:
    (a) One has set Dictionary Preferences as noted in item 2 above and clicks More after having selected text and opened the Dictionary panel via "Look up in Dictionary."
    (b) One launches Dictionary independently, searches for a word directly in Dictionary, and then selects that word from the list of search results.
If you'd like to suggest that Apple change these behaviors in Dictionary, submit a Mac OS X Feedback.
    Good luck!

  • Changing contextual menu to make Dictionary/Thesaurus faster to get to . .

In other Apple programs (e.g. Safari, Mail), the Dictionary/Thesaurus is in the first level of the contextual menu ("Look Up in Dictionary"). In Pages, it is in the second level ("Writing Tools>Look Up in Dictionary/Thesaurus"). I use the dictionary and thesaurus function a lot in writing, and find it slows me down to have this critical writing function not at the first level.
    Any way to change that?

    Try this:
Go under the Apple menu, to System Preferences, and choose Keyboard & Mouse. When the dialog appears, click on the Keyboard Shortcuts tab, then click the plus sign at the bottom left of the dialog. Another dialog will appear. Choose Finder from the Application pop-up menu, and then type the exact name of the menu command you want to add a shortcut for. Now type the shortcut you want to use and click the Add button

    Keith,
Only send to these people using Plain Text, including any Signature if you are using one. The issue you describe is normally the result of using RIch Text Format, which often gets converted to HTML, which then is problematic to some Windows email clients, notably Outlook and Outlook Express.
The HTML can also be problematic by triggering the SPAM filters of some recipients, many of which can alter or remove the graphics in the message.
