Thinkpad 600E and udev
I've been booting Arch on every single +686 device I own. So far, there has been much success.
Most recently, I installed 0.8 beta 2 Voodoo on a Thinkpad 600E (366Mhz P2, 256Mb ram, 5Gb hd). Previously booted Puppy Linux.
This has been largely a failure. Udev takes ages to scan. Sound modules refuse to load ( "CS4236+ soundcard not found or device busy" ) and more critically, PCMCIA drivers are not working. The correct modules are there (yenta socket, pcmcia core, etc), but pccard utils do not recognize anything. Cards do not even power up. As the laptop has no onboard ethernet, getting a wifi card running is a top priority.
I've followed the recommendations on
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/IBM … 645-CBH%29
except for the DVD overlay option, as no X server has been installed yet.
A quick comparison of lsmod between Puppy (where wifi and sound work) and Arch show that Arch is not missing any modules Puppy loaded and loaded about three times as many modules.
I think udev is at fault. But udev has never let me down before. I'm not quite sure where to begin fixing things. Anyone have similar trouble? Any system reports that would be useful to diagnose? Dmesg is nothing but several hundred "CS4236+ soundcard not found or device busy", which really doesn't help with the PCMCIA problems.
Thanks.
I'm a newb to Arch, having decided to switch from Ubuntu, and have also had the traditional struggle with sound on the 600E. I started with the 2009.8 install and followed the beginner's guide.
After some false starts, I've ended up with this in /etc/rc.conf:
MOD_AUTOLOAD="yes"
#MOD_BLACKLIST=() #deprecated
MODULES=(!snd_cs46xx !snd_cs461x !snd_cs4232 !pcihp !snd_cs4236)
and it works. I do not have any other config information in place. In particular, using the "options snd-cs4236..." line in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf seemed to make it fail to boot properly, so that file is now empty (or at any rate, all commented out). I have no idea why (apparently) blacklisting the module that's actually needed works, but it seems to,
I've also got this:
# added DL 23.dec.09
options snd-pcsp index=2
in /etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf but I don't think that's directly relevant.
The output of "lsmod | grep snd" may be helpful:

[SOLVED] IBM Thinkpad 600E 3.6.11-1 rt73usb weird wireless issue.
Hi guys and gals.
I have been researching this for 3 days now. I have also asked at the #Archlinux channel but they don't seem to know the answer and I cannot seem to find anything relevant... so here goes nothing.
I have this Belkin rt73usb card - it's connected to this SUPER OLD Thinkpad 600E machine and it's associated always with only 1 router - static IP setup - basically laptop is stationary / not moved. I had little problems with connecting it to the network at boot time but thanks to Boohbah from #Archlinux channel and a bit of research I got it to connect http://sparewotw.wordpress.com/2013/01/ … boot-time/ and to turn off power management and to keep the rate as "fixed" - works well BUT... I have a problem with it - the connection stays up - I can browse the internet from the thinkpad / I can access the sshfs share on my server (from thinkpad) and so on but after a while sshd port - 50505 in my case - goes from open into filtered and I cannot connect to it anymore. Example - rebooted thinkpad - i can connect - thinkpad was left alone for lets say sometimes 10 minutes - sometimes an hour - connection is active but I cannot ssh to the machine anymore.
I have been running shorewall as a firewall and I said maybe it's a shorewall bug but then I ran as root shorewall clear and it didn't solved it, disabling shorewall or restarting didn't help, restarting sshd service didn't help only restarting the wlan0 service / connection re-opens the port... Any ideas?
All I get is "No route to host" and when I nmap the port it's not open anymore... it says filtered without firewall enabled / active...
The connecting method has nothing to do with failures as netcfg (which started connecting at boot time after adding pci=noacpi to the boot time kernel parameters) is doing the exact same thing...
Also when powermanagement was on and the rate was not fixed the problem was still occuring...
Connection info is available at the link mentioned above.

[ 11.538531] AddingHi Dude.
I will try what You have suggested.
Which channel do You "recommend"?
My router is set to G-only as the card is G-only, I have been using channel 1 but I will change it to 11 and see what happens.
I was using WPA2-Personal with AES but I will change it to WPA2-Mixed (AES + TKIP) and see if that changes anything.
I was hoping that the upgrade of the linux-firmware (linux-firmware-20130610-1) that I have found in the repo today fixes the issue.
Installed it and typed in:
[root@wishthinkpad andrzejl]# iwconfig wlan0 rate 54M fixed
[root@wishthinkpad andrzejl]# ping go
and I have lost connection before I could even type in "ping google.com"...
Edit: Changing router's settings got me nowhere so far Dude:

Thinkpad 600E "bluescreens" on startup indicating BIOS error
I have a 600E which on starting up Windows XP "bluescreens" displaying in part:
your computer (BIOS) has reported that a component in your system is faulty and has prevented windows from operating. You can determine which component is faulty by running the diagnostic disk or tool that came with your computer.
I tried to install a new BIOS but because the battery is old and does not hold
a charge, the BIOS install will not continue.
Is there a dignostic utility which I can use to identifiy and resolve this?
As a remedy, I tried to re-install Windows XP, but, got the same "bluescreen" error again.
A previous display indicated a problem with the video driver. An updated BIOS won't solve your hardware problem.
The diagnostic tool referred to on the BIOS message is built into the BIOS you currently have. Turn off your computer, press & hold the F1 key, and turn your computer back on. Keep F1 down until the Easy Setup screen appears. At the right is the test (diagnostics) icon. Click on it and on the next screen, pick something to test, such as display. Click on the icons rather than the name of the icon. This doesn't solve your problem, only pinpoints it.
You can update your BIOS without a good battery. Google "Thinkpad 600e bios update without battery". -
Installation menu always results in Abort Installation? ThinkPad 600E
i am trying to install arch 0.7.1 to my old ThinkPad 600E. when the installation menu appear no matter what menu option i select i get the same prompt: Abort Installation? if i try to see if there are any error messages using alt+f<1-4> there is nothing. from what i saw on forum people who have this problem had a problem with /tmp. however, with mount i see that /tmp was mounted as tmpfs with rw permission. the only thing i do see is during boot from CD and it's:
Loading /tmp/.mnt/addons/utils-jfs.tar.bz2
tar: Invalid tar magic
the same thing goes for:
utils-kdb.tar.bz2
utils-keymaps.tar.bz2
utils-lvm.tar.bz2
utils-mdamd.tar.bz2
utils-ntfs.tar.bz2
utils-pcmcia.tar.bz2
utils-reiserfs.tar.bz2
utils-wireless.tar.bz2
utils-xfs.tar.bz2
any ideas? thankstom5760 wrote:Check this out -> http://www.archlinux.org/news/296/
thanks for the response. i only have 32MB of RAM on this machine and i am not looking to upgrade. really all i want to use this laptop for is to run tcpdump on it - that's it! so should i even try 0.8 beta? thanks... -
Error Code 8611 - Thinkpad 600E
I have recently started to receive an 8611 error code when I power on my Thinkpad 600E. So far, I've been able to just restart several times and it eventually powers on and works. I'm afraid it's going to eventually NOT power on and whenever possible I don't even cut my computer off. Does anyone know what this error code is and what I need to do to fix the problem? I am so far from knowledgeable when it comes to the internal operations of computers that I have no idea where to even begin to look for answers on my own.
Thanks.
DebbieWelcome to the forum!
This is a keyboard-related code, most likely will need some puliing apart and re-assembling of your 600E.
For more info, check the page 56 of the HMM that can be downloaded from here:

Good luck.

I need to buy another usb, pcmcia or mini pci-e wireless card.
Can you recommend one that works well? Because I never work with wifi cards on linux.
sorry my poor english
EDIT 21/07/09: add more information (thinkwiki):
http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/ThinkPad_ … Adapter_II
EDIT 22/10/09:
Finally came the expected driver, I think it's premature but it works perfectly.
Here the driver (r8192se_pci):
32bits: http://launchpadlibrarian.net/33927923/ … 009.tar.gz
64bits: http://launchpadlibrarian.net/34090326/ … bit.tar.gz
untar; make; make install; reboot and enjoy it
I test it with:
netcfg
standar commands:
ifconfig wlan0 up
iwlist wlan0 scan
iwconfig wlan0 essid MySsid
wpa_supplicant -B -Dwext -i wlan0 -c /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf
dhcpcd wlan0
The first time I compile the module, function correctly, but after scan for available networks I haven't any results.
Recompile and everything worked again
[b]I edit the wiki, pleased read it and help me because my English is a bit basic.
thanks

Thinkpad W530 and Intel Rapid Start Issue
Hi there, I have a Thinkpad W530 and am having an issue with Intel Rapid Start. When I enable it, it works fine. Once. When I bring the computer back from the S4 state everything is working just fine. But the Intel Rapid Start service disables itself. I have to re-enable it each time I want to use it. Any ideas? Thanks! Charlie Durand
This is happening for me too on my X1 Carbon, having wiped it and installed Windows 8 manually. Rapidstart will work fine the first time I turn it on, but then it'll pretty much say it's done with me until I switch it back to "on" again.
Having to check the manager each time is rather tedious, so I'm going to turn it off (edit:uninstall!) and use hibernation until a fix is published. -
Thinkpad 600e xorg.conf
Hi all, I have been working with my TPad 600e and have things going pretty well. I have everything working fine but have an issue that I have not solved. I cannot make the neomagic graphic card work. I have tried several settings but none have worked. I googled up a couple that came from a debian install and those failed. Have any of you 600e padders made your neomagic work? If so could you please post your xorg.conf file so I can compare. Right now I am using vesa and it works but I want to see if I can get the neomagic driver to work.
I do have one other issue with shutdown but have not hacked at it yet so I will work on that for a while longer before I ask for help.
Thank's in advance for your assistance.
Davidspotslayer wrote: I have everything working fine but have an issue that I have not solved. I cannot make the neomagic graphic card work.
wow u even have the mwave modem and the soundcard working perfectly?
can u elaborate how u did that -
I recently purchased an I ThinkPad T540p, and install there Windows 8.1 Enterpirse.
Then I download and install all drivers from lenovo site including upgrade BIOS to version 2.07
Then I have noticed that the default for the keys where F1 and F2, etc. usually are, are now the mute and volume buttons. To access the F1, F2....F12 keys, you now have to press Fn + your desired F key.
Is it possible to reverse the Function keys? I would much rather press Fn + F1 to mute than have to press press Fn + F1 to access F1.
Thanks you in advance.
Solved!
Go to Solution.Hi,
Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!
Check in BIOS -> config -> Keyboard if there is an option to switch between default and legacy mode.
If you don’t find that option, you may try the Fn+esc combination that changes the function keys to legacy mode, but when the computer reboots, it might reset back to a default mode and you have to use Fn+esc again.
Hope this helps!
Best regards,
Mithun.

Thinkpad W510 and W530 accessories compatibility
Hello all,
From a previous post, I found that accessories such as the power adapter and docking station will not work between the Lenovo Thinkpad W510 and W540 models. Instead, are they compatible between a W510 and W530 and if not, how about a W510 and W520?
Solved!
Go to Solution.No. W530 and W520 use the same docks and AC adapters; W510 uses different ones. All 3 have the same shape of battery, but the W530 needs one with an additional chip. A W530 battery will work in any of them. Nothing fits a W540. The only difference in the dock on the T510 (vs. T520, T530) is the AC jack is keyed for the 170W adapter.

Thinkpad W510 and W540 accessories compatibility
Hello all,
I have a Lenovo Thinkpad W510 and I am looking to upgrade to a W540. For my current W510 I have a docking station and two power adapters. Will they all still work on a W540?
Solved!
Go to Solution.Hello.
No, neither the dock nor the power supplies will work. The xx40 series of ThinkPads use the new rectangle tip power jacks instead of the barrel shaped ones, thus requiring new models of both.
Cheers!

Sierra Wireless EM7345 ThinkPad 8 and 10 general issues
This was posted as a reply to german forum but it was deleted Symptoms (mobile connection is connected)
1. mobile connection randomly disconnects. It is possible to reconnect again. 2. when resume from Connected standby mode the mobile connection appears to be connected but it is dead. It is not possible to disconnect nor turn off the mobile connection, it is stuck. Windows restart is required to resolve it. 3. when resume from Connected standby mode the EM7345 composite device disappears at all from Device Manager and new unknown device '1 CDC' appears. Windows restart is required to resolve it. Note: Issues 2 and 3 occurs when running on battery only. I don't have any occurence when the tablet was plugged in AC, turned off (into Connected standby mode) and on, yet. I have already tried to reinstall the 1.6.10513.4153 driver, no luck. I have also tried to disable 'USB selective suspend' feature in driver settings and switch off GNSS device (because it has Sierra Wireless driver), no change. I have latest BIOS 1.24 (ThinkPad 8, 64 bit). It is hard to reproduce the case 3 but I have almost reliable steps: 1. uninstall current driver (even it is the latest version)2. restart3. install current 1.6.10513.4153 driver, select Custom Setup, make sure the 'WWAN Logging Tool' is selected, finish the installation4. restart 5. establish mobile connection6. go to Start menu, Intel group, start 'M.2 WWAN Logging Tool'7. press Start Trace button8. turn off the tablet (while the tracing is running) by power button, wait for a minute 9. turn on the tablet(repeat steps 8 and 9 multiple times, in case you can not reproduce it at the first time) EM7345 device disappears with typical unknown 1 CDC device. Yes, it is not a standard operation but it is easily reproducible with the same result. Similar issue is reported in other forum posts for ThinkPad 8 and 10

Old firmware 1.1 that can not be updated to 1.2, read this thread http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/T400-T500-and-newer-T-series/T540p-Sierra-WWAN-EM7345-reliability/m-p/1839271#M106663 The 1.2 firmware might help to resolve the issue (although this post states it actually did not help). Technical details When the USB composite device (EM7345 = WWAN + GNSS) disappears it incorrectly identifies itself as VID = 1519, PID = F000 so Windows can not find proper driver for the device and displays it with (?) icon. If you remove the '1 CDC' device from Device Manager and perform 'Scan for hardware changes' this time it is correctly identified as VID = 1199, PID = A001 and installed (these tasks can be automated using devcon.exe command-line tool, so the fix wouldn't require OS restart everytime it occurs. It is still hack, not a solution). It looks like a firmware bug because the USB composite device and WWAN MBIM device uses Microsoft generic driver. Summary Given the price tag of ThinkPad 8 and 10 tablets, Lenovo should fix that because this is basic functionality failure. Disappearing WWAN device that needs full restart is really serious issue. And again, please diagnose and resolve the issue (hint , hint) instead of "try to reinstall this, try to reinstall that, replace this, replace that" advices. It leads to nowhere because the driver/firmware is buggy as it was in the past with Ericsson device. (copy of the post is stored)More details. I installed USB Device Viewer from Windows Driver Kit to get some information. When the EM7435 device is healthy: [Port3] : USB Composite Device

I decided to try bringing this oldie back to life. The CMOS battery was dead so I replaced it with a new one with the same model number, which solved the issue of error 161 and 173 (I think these were the exact numbers). After replacing the CMOS battery, those two errors did not show up again.
Now however, it does not go past the Thinkpad logo with/without a HDD/bootable CD. I left it like that for an hour earlier on, but nothing further happened. On trying to enter the BIOS, it shows error 301 (keyboard error) but does not leave the logo. Clearly the keyboard works as this error shows only when trying to access the BIOS (by holding F1 when powering it on).
Since it will not find the OS installed on the drive, nor does it want to read a bootable CD, I'm trying to get into the BIOS to see what is wrong, but I cannot even access that.
Anyone have any insight? You can upgrade to a PIII 850MHz MMC-2 processor module.

after failing to load xp and getting error reading disk messages the 600E suddenly provided a 189 message but allowed me to run the system check through F1. The manual indicates a system board error and suggests a replacement, but why is the system check coming through as OK?
Any help would be appreciated. In addition when trying to load xp i set up the partitions but when i checked the HD prior to reforting and checking for errors, all i found was C drive, so where is the other partition? I did not use partition magic or any other software. It would seem that when i set the C drive to 10G setup seemed to work, but left 65G floudering or hidden somewhere.
I am not expert by anymeans so getting to extent of my common sense and technical know how.
DenIt's somewhat of a shot in the dark, but I've seen instances where new CMOS battery cleared the 189 error, although it's not supposed to...
Good luck.
Cheers,
George

thanks from VenezuelaWelcome to the forum!
This is a keyboard-related code, most likely will need some puliing apart and re-assembling of your 600E.
For more info, check the page 56 of the HMM that can be downloaded from here:

Who do I talk to about getting the credit on my account that was promised to me 3 months ago?
Back in April my husband and I traded in our old iPhones for a "free" 5c upgrade through Verizon's loyalty program. We then signed up for a home phone, and basically after all the changes were made we were told our monthly bill would be $140/month.
