Thinkpad T60 battery sudden drop

Hey,
I bought a T60 Sep 2007. Recently  I am having a problem with battery life.(My battery is not on the list of recall)
My battery life went down drastically. It used to be a couple of hours, now it's less than half an hour. Power mangment reports a copule of hours remaining, until it gets down to about 85%-90%, and then suddently drop to 5% and a few minutes remaining.
I seldom use battery and most of time use AC. Interstingly, after charging my battery to 20% or 30%, it can last for half an hour or so. So I suspect there is something wrong with software rather than a physical problem.
Any comments or solutions?

That type of behaviour is typical if one or more cells in the battery are bad. You should look into replacement options.
What condition does Power Manager report for the battery?
Good luck andlet us know.
Cheers,
George

  • Lenovo IdeaPad Z410 Battery Suddenly Drops From 100% to 0%

I have had my Lenovo IdeaPad Z410 since around January, and I have just recently expierienced the problem of the battery dropping to zero. What happens is my battery will be draining at a normal pace then all of a sudden my laptop will shut down and will not go back on as it thinks the battery is dead. If it is plugged when this happens then the orange battery low light will begin flashing and the message goes from saying "Fully charged (100%)" to "1% remaining (plugged in, charging)". This is quite annoying as I cannot take my laptop anywhere without fear of it randomly dying on me. I would assume I wouldn't need a new battery after only having the laptop for a few months. Also, if you are not familiar with this model, the battery is built in internally so I cannot try removing it and putting it back in myself. Any advice would be appreciated; I'd rather not deal with Lenovo's customer support unless I absolutely have to.

    hi LordMothim,
    Welcome to the Lenovo Forums.
Based from your findings, it's possible that:
    - the battery circuit inside is not working to unload the charge, or
    - one of the battery cells have already reached its life span
    - the chip that handles how the battery gets charge/discharge and checks the charge level of each battery cell (both are controlled by a firmware) is malfunctioning.
Batteries degrade overtime due to heat and daily use. If you're still under warranty, I recommend you contact lenovo and report the issue as you most likely need a replacement battery.

  • Lenovo U410 Battery Sudden Drop to 0%

    Hi guys n girls,
I just got Lenovo U410 Windows 8 in February 2013. This afternoon when i was using the laptop in power saver mode, I was able to use an hour from 60% to 48%. After checking the battery percentage when it was at 48%, 5 minutes later the low battery warning showed up saying the laptop has 6% left, then it shut down itself.
    Following are the situations:
I seldom use it and I left it for 1 week plus, and two days ago I used it for 15 minutes, and then I took it out n used it today.
I used it in power saver mode.
I was running the windows update.
    Steam was on for updating.
    I was running open office.
Is this normal ? Does this happen to others ? IS there a way to solve this ?
    Thanks

  • N97 mini battery level drops suddenly

I've observed my N97 mini's battery level dropping abruptly from 4 bars to 1 bar (with low battery alarm). The phone's slightly more than a month old and using the latest 11.x.x firmware. Did a bit of googling, and found several suggestions on how to save battery (turn off everything 'smart' on ur phone). That's not the point anyways. I need to find out why the battery level drops suddenly (like what happens when ur battery's dying out), and *not* why the battery lasts X hrs. I'm not sure about this, but I think this mostly happens when the battery level is slightly below max, and I use any app that needs the GPS functionality. But then, there doesn't seem to be any problem with the GPS hardware in the phone, 'coz it usually gets a GPS lock in less than a minute (mostly within seconds). Could it be related to the algo used to show the battery level, or is it that its my battery that's faulty? Any others out there having the same problem?

It's understandable that the batterymeter is not linear (atleast the charge/discharge rates are not). But what bugs me are those sudden erratic drops within minutes (a couple of minutes at times). Anyone who has spent a few days with a dying (rechargeable) battery would know what I'm talking about. It's not a good feeling when u r away from a charge source, and you decide to use one of those power hungry things (like Wifi/GPS) thinking you still have sufficient juice left...and then bam! ... the low battery warning! you just switch off everything, and hope that it lasts till you reach the next oasis. I guess I'd have to analyze this a bit more to understand if its some specific app that causes such behaviour (as mentioned in my original post, i doubt the GPS apps currently). If it happens too often, and even with 'normal' voice+text kind of usage scenarios, its time see Nokia Care I guess. The reason for this post is to know if this behaviour is observed by other N97 mini users as well..then I know there's no point in taking it to Nokia Care.

  • Sudden drop in battery performance?

I've had my iPhone 3gs since release, been more than happy with the battery performance untill the last two days. The battery is dropping 2% at a time suddenly. Very quickly. I have restored the phone. I am getting concerned. Any ideas?

Lots of threads about this. Seems to be an issue with the 3.0.1 update or the way it affects certain apps. There are a couple step-by-step tutorials about resetting the battery sensor, restoring as a new phone, etc. Try one or all of those and see if it helps.

  • Why does the magic mouse battery level drop suddenly?

I typically get, oh, about 3 weeks off of a pair of AA alkaline 1.5V batteries on my magic mouse.
What I don't understand though is not really being able to track the battery level in the bluetooth menu on my iMac 21.5".
The battery level even now is at 100%. What happens is is that it stays at 100% for several weeks and then all of a sudden drops to 7% or so, and I get a low battery warning. Then after a couple of days the battery will drain out.
After it drops down to 7% I can usually track the battery drain in the menu. But I never see it at 90% or 80% or 50%, etc. It just drops down suddenly near the end of the battery life.
Do other people see more continuous changes of the battery level?
The same thing happens with my bluetooth Apple keyboard that came with the iMac. Right now it is showing a level of 100%. It typically lasts for months instead of weeks, but I will never see an in-between battery level value until I get a low-battery warning.
I'm thinking of rechargeable batteries for my magic mouse. But I see too many negatives posted here in the forums about that, so I am hesitant about investing in those batteries and a charger if it's not going to work well.
    Thanks,
    doug

Maybe it's a Mac model issue? I'm running the late 2009 model, purchased in February 2010, and running Lion.
But I've never seen the battery level display in-between values.
Here's what it is showing now and I replaced the batteries over a week ago.
Do your batteries also last a few weeks in the magic mouse?
    Thanks,
    doug

  • 1950-Battery level drops suddenly to 5%

    Hi,
I have a Satellite 1950-902. I was wondering if someone could help with the following problem/unusual behaviour that began about a month ago:
I start using the laptop with the battery showing up as being full in Power Management. After about ten minutes of battery use, as soon as the battery level shows as being around 85%, the battery level indication suddenly drops sharply to 5%, and the system hibernates. When I recharge the battery, the charging process takes a very short time (about half an hour).
This behaviour is repeated every time I use the battery now.
    What is going wrong?
    Thanks.

    Hi Eleni,
It sounds as if some of the cells in your battery may have failed and consequently the battery can only hold a small portion of the normal charge. I would suggest a new battery is called for.
    regards,

    Hey,
I have read all of the posts on here on the battery suddenly dying... however I've noticed something in the power managment on my laptop since my battery isnt charging anymore.
here is what I have on the Details and specifically does the current being 0.00A have anything to do with it? or the cycle count ... what is it normally suppose to be?

I am having a similar problem with my T60. From this thread I figured I needed a new battery,  so I bought a 42T4619. I inserted the battery into the laptop and it showed 25% charge, so I went ahead and let it charge down to 4% to cycle it before putting it on the AC adaptor.
However, now that it's on the AC adaptor I am still getting 0 current even though the battery showes to be in a 'Charging' state (particulars below).

  • T430s battery capacity sudden drop

Hi,  I have a look at my battery report today and found something really awkward. I bought the computer seven months ago, and the battery start with Design capacity 44,000wWh, while the full charge capacity is quite closer to the design capacity. However in the battery report it shows that two weeks ago the design capacity suddenly drop from 44000 to 40734mWh in one week, and then afterwards it drop to 39000mWh. And the actual full charge capacity seems to linger around 37000mWh. Is there something wrong or is my battery just wear out naturally? Best,Eddy

Full charge capacity will decline with battery age and number of recharge cycles. Lenovo warrants their batteries for 1 year. IIRC if the full charge capacity drops below 80% of design capacity in the first year you are eligible for a new battery. 80% of 44,000mWh is ~35,000mWh. I would keep an eye on full charge capacity over the remaining 5 months of your warranty.

  • Sudden drop in battery performance / condition

I have a late 2010 MacBook Air. Battery suddenly says "Service Battery". Was away for 11 days and when opened air to use noticed this?

Do what it says. If it's the MBA's original battery it's probably due for replacement.

  • T60 Battery malfunction

    I bought a Thinkpad T60 notebook (type: 2007 D62, SN# L34G72L) in January 2007 in Hong Kong (Now, I am in Germany).
Yesterday, Oct. 24, 2008, the battery malfunctioned (FRU P/N 92P1137, ASM P/N 92P1138). The indicator light under the screen twinkled continuously. And the battery does not function at all.  The Power Manager shows: “A battery error has occurred. The battery cannot be charged. Replace the battery.”
The battery was used rarely. Power Manager shows only 19 cycles.
Does someone know how to solve this problem?

  • ThinkPad T60 wont boot

    Hi,
Just the other day I went to take my computer out of sleep mode but upon doing so it crashed. When I tried to boot it back up I got this strange set of beeps and just a blank screen. Tried to reboot again and no luck. One thing that I have noticed is that after the beeps the "z: symbol with the circle around it stays on, but I really dont know what it means.  Here is a youtube video of me trying to boot it up
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pm4Lklr6-Rk
I have heard that it might be a battery or power supply issue but I really dont have any way of testing it out without buying one. Any suggestions?

    doctaphill,
Here's a link you can add to your favourites; Hardware removal and installation - ThinkPad T60, T60p
I don't think your problem is power associated. If you remove your memory stick(s) and boot without memory, does the beep code change? If you have more than one stick of memory try booting with only one and then swap around.

  • Thinkpad T60 BIOS crash...

I have a Thinkpad T60 that has Vista 32 bit installed on it. It ran well for several months and then I did a BIOS update that froze and never finished. Now the machine is a brick. When I boot, all I get is the power and battery indicators. I believe the BIOS was wiped out. Is there a way I can restore the BIOS without having to replace the Mother Board...

If you can hook up a floppy disk and boot from that, you may be lucky, trying to do the BIOS update that way.
See also this article from Lenovo they also mention a separate widescreen BIOS. Did tou try to load the wrong version?
I think the BIOS is socketed, you may be able to get a fresh replacement here

  • Lenovo Thinkpad T60 with start up problems

I have a Lenovo Thinkpad T60 with start up problems.  In order to get the computer to start up, I have to unplug it, remove the battery, re-insert the battery and turn it on, once it starts the start up sequence, I can plug in the power cord.
If I plug the cord in before I push the power button, all of the lights go out, and it does nothing.
I have tried several power supplies, and a new battery, even though the old battery seems to work.
All of the updates are applied, including the latest bios update.
The computer seems to work normally unless it goes into standby, then it just turns off.
Any ideas what could be causing this?

    Hello,
Did you replace the primary battery which snaps into the back, or the internal CMOS/RTC battery inside the unit?

  • When I am on Firefox, my Netzero email page suddenly dropped to very small print. AOL OK. How do I increase size of the print so I can read the email?

I was using Firefox to read my Netzero email. The print suddenly dropped down to very small and I have difficulty reading the email. Netzero said to oper Mozilla Firefox, click "tools", click "options", and click "content" to change the font to a bigger size. But when I clicked the brown "Firefox" button on the Firefox page, I do not see the buttons Netzero told me to click. Can you tell me what they are referring to or just tell me how to increase the size of the font when I am reading email on Netzero. AOL email font size was not affected when I clicked AOL to read the email there.
