ThinkVantage tools and ThinkStation D10

I recently acquired a D10 (6493) and was looking forward to the same handy tools I use with most Lenovo products, ie the Productivity Center (which Lenovo specifically mentions ships with the D10), the System Update tool, the power management tools, etc.
This machine originally had Vista on it but needless to say I had no interest in keeping that so I installed Win7 Ultimate x64 on it. But when I install Productivity Center on it, it doesn't seem to recognize anything about the machine, ie no system overview with part number/serial number, etc. When I install System Update on it, the only item that ever shows in the list of updates after doing a check is a system migration tool. Despite the fact that when I had installed that there were a bunch of drivers etc that had not yet been installed. (Having an automated tool to install driver updates is one of the things I really like about Lenovo products)
Whereas when I installed a fresh Win7-Ultimate x64 install on my Thinkpad T400, the various tools recognize the Thinkpad as expected, the System Update utility displays the expected updates available and so on.
I realize that the Thinkstation may not use quite the variety of Lenovo tools that ie the Thinkpads do, but I know that they must use some, since ie some E10's I installed for a client last year certainly do.
Am I missing something here?
Solved!
Go to Solution.

since no win 7 drivers were qualified on the D10, TVSU will come up short on what's listed as compatible.   if you were installing vista again then the database would exist and the results list much more extensive.   win 7 includes many of the drivers your D10 needs anyway so you shouldn't be missing much if anything.
i'm not sure why TVPC isn't working for you.   the software is quite old and was sunset early 2010 if memory serves, which could explain it.   make sure that you're using the version for thinkcentre/thinkstation and not thinkpad.   they're different.
3.11 is the most recent version available from 2009:  http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?&LegacyDocID=MIGR-63443

  • Windows 7 and Acronis in Thinkstation D10

    Hello
I open this post to share an experience about Windows 7 and Acronis Workstation.
This weekend I installed a new graphics card, an ATI HD 6850, I know this isn´t a working card, but I don´t work with CAD, 3D, renders, etc... I am developer, (programming + design).
The main feature to buy this card is Eyefinity, nVidia don´t let me use 3 monitors without SLI, (I can use desktop apps with two cards but not certain apps using Full Window), and reading post by Erik and other members, D10
    doesn´t support SLI.
OK, Windows XP don´t let me use 3 monitors, so Windows 7 is the solution. Once Windows 7 is installed and upgraded I reboot and made a backup with Acronis BR10 Workstation BootCD.
After that I installed the Lenovo Thinkvantage tools, (showing there is no need to upgrade nothing), work software, Intel SSD Tool and Windows Acronis BR10. When I finished reboot and made an Acronis BootCD backup.
I finished and I thought, "it's time to work". When I reboot, uppps, a "nice" blue screen.
First thought, I was wrong with the graphics card, there must be incompatibility, but first reboot without the software installed system works fine.
I use the Acronis BootCD to recover the second copy, (all installed), and the same blue screen, but when recover the first copy, (only system updated) works fine, so I made a copy with BootCD every time I installed
    something.
One of the crash shown "SSD getting started", I thought it was due to Intel SSD tool, but much people had installed this, and without SSD Tool, when I install Acronis in Windows, once again.
The result is I can install all software except Acronis BR10 Workstation, because in the first reboot after install Acronis the system crash and the "nice" bluescreen is shown.
I hope this can help others users and thanks to all.

I have been on Win7 Pro for quite some time and the local thumbs.db has only recently started showing up in the local folders.  I recall this was a problem when upgrading from Win XP but my laptop is a clean install from media.  I recently had
to wipe and re-install Win7 Pro on my laptop and the problem began with after the SP1 install.
We all want thumbnail caching - just not in the local folders.  The network share matter is a different animal.
What is perplexing is that Win7 uses several central thumbs.db type cache files and doesn't need the local thumbs.db file, and yet I am getting the exact same behavior as the others in this post.  I've often wondered if the junctions are causing this,
or perhaps if you sync to file shares for media like I do then once a thumbs.db is in a folder Win7 uses it - kind of a use local then central behavior.  Something for a deep gearhead to consider.
My solution that so far seems to work is to do the following:
    - I always have "show all system and hidden files" on my computers... so set that first if not set
    - In Explorer go to Tools -> Folder Options -> View and check the box for "Always Show Icons, Never Thumbnails"
    - Next from c:\users\[name]\ search for all files named thumbs.db
    - Delete all of the thumbs.db files (you'll need admin privs)
    - Now return to the Tools -> Folder Options -> View and uncheck the box for "Always Show Icons, Never Thumbnails"
This works for me, the local files no longer show up, and yet the performance is fine because Win7 is using the central db.

  • Thinkvantage Update Tool is a tool and bricked my laptop.

Earlier today, I ran the Thinkvantage update tool on my x230, and it showed that a new BIOS update was available. I ran the tool, and now my laptop won't start. The power light turns on, but nothing else happens. I have tried various fixes I found online (removing the battery, as well as the CMOS battery etc.) to no avail.
I just got off the phone with Lenovo tech support, and they kindly informed me that my warranty expired 4 days ago (9/24), and that it would cost $576 to send it in for repair.
What are my options at this point, besides forking out close to 600 bucks?
    Thanks for your help!

    bryanosaur,
you mentioned that you removed batteries. Did you press the power button and hold it during 10-15 sec (w/o attached power cable and main battery, of course)? If then laptop will boot and you see some error messages goto BIOS Setup and reset settings to default.

  • Thinkvantage Tools and Toolbox won't work!

Hi! I own a Thinkpad Edge 520 and it is only recent almost 2 days ago that I noticed that I could not open my Thinkvantage toolbox and Power Manager. I want to use power manager to swtich between hardcore and light use. However, everytime I click the power manager (that icon on the taskbar that looks like a battery), it would say that "stopped working" and even Thinkvantage Toolbox wont open anymore!
Splash screen lights up and some missing graphics too then suddenly close.
Thinkvantage Autolock also doesn't work. And when I press the camera button on the keyboard (F5), it says "Communications Utility Hotkey OSD has stopped working"..
Help me out here guys! Lenove Thinkpad isn't complete without these Thinkvantage tools. What happened here? I wasn't tinkering with my system at all. Just use it for word, chat, surf and photoshop. and downloading torrents.

  • Transferring OS from HDD to SSD using ThinkVantage Tools?

Hi everyone. I recently purchased a ThinkPad T420 from Lenovo and an mSata SSD (80gb) off Newegg. I installed the drive properly and my computer recognizes the drive, etc. Now, when I bought my ThinkPad, I didn't purchase a physical copy of Windows 7 because when I go to college next year, I'll be able to get a super cheap copy (like 7 dollars). So I'm stuck with the problem of getting my operating system from my factory installed HDD to my self installed SSD. How would I go about doing this?
    Things I have:
    -External Hard drive
-CD-RW discs (made one into a Rescue and Recovery Start Up Disc using the Rescue and Recovery software)
    -ThinkVantage Tools
    -Patch for Rescue and Recovery
Should I be doing this using Lenovo's built in tools? Also, I was wondering if/how/when I should partition my SSD for my OS. I don't have any experience doing this, but I've read that it's pretty important.
Thank you! I'm still learning, so I appreciate your patience :]

There are a couple of ways to do this, depending on what you want to accomplish.  Do you want the OS install on your SSD to be the factory image - as it was when your  laptop came out of the box - or do you want a snapshot of your machine at the time you swapped drives (actually just before you swapped drives)?
(obviously, you do either of the below with the original HD in the machine.)
For a factory config, in addition to that Rescue and Recovery start-up disk, you need the full factory recovery media set.  You should see an option to burn that set of DVDs in R&R.  Whatever you do, it's a good idea to burn these and keep them handy.  Once you have the full set, install the SSD, and boot the first DVD.  You should then be able to install the factory image.
For an "as-running" image, plug in your external HD.  You can choose to put the R&R bootable rescue media on the HD, or you can just use the CD you already made.  If you make the HD bootable and it already has data on it you want to keep, watch out for a "preserve existing data" checkbox. Then just save a backup to your external HD.  Install the SSD, boot the CD or external HD, and do a restore.
I don't know about the current generation of machines and R&R, but it's been my observation that a full restore from backup restores everything _except_ the factory image in the Q: partition.  You will have your full OS and everything you've installed, R&R capabilitites (from within Windows and at boot time) but you will not have the boot time option to restore your machine to factory state from the Q: image.  That's what that factory optical media set it for.
If you use the factory media set you burned to set up your SSD, you will have everything including the Q: full image, but of course you will have to reinstall anything that you added to the HD yourself.
You can also do this kind of thing with Acronis, and other utilities.  One thing though, if you use a cloning process instead of a backup and restore, make sure that the SSD ( or any target HD or SSD you or another reader is using) is in the ThinkPad when you do the clone.  For some reason TPs are very fussy about this.  Cloning to an external device, then moving it to the TP generally doesn't work.
Here is  andyP 's excellent write-up on using Acronis for this: Hard Drive Clonewars
Re SSDs, there may be things you should do/have to do to get full performance and keep it healthy.  I can't help you there.
    Good luck,
    Z.

  • Lenovo ThinkVantage Tools PASSWORD ISSUES WITH OUTLOOK

    Hello!
The ThinkVantage Password application is completely interfering with my Outlook work email address. Even the technicians with the Fortune 100 company that I work for say that ThinkVantage is "obtrusive & messy". My ThinkPad Edge is built for business yet it can't carry out elementary tasks...
Since there seems to be no way for my Outlook and ThinkVantage Password to co-exist... I would just like to know how to disable ThinkVantage Tools, without having to uninstall the program.
    Thank you very much.

  • Jump list Thinkvantage Tools disappeared

I have an X301 with Win 7 32b. The first day it came, I noticed the icon of Lenovo Thinkvantage Tools (3 red spheres), and its jumplist (right mouse click), wich tracks the system foders recently visited.
So I started using it, listing my most used folders in this jump list.
Today the list disappeared without reason. I did no update or whatsoever.
The same happened months ago with the jump list of Adobe Acrobat, and this was never solved (luckily my company upgraded to Acrobat X).
Has someone suggestion to solve this issue?
    Thanks  and Regards

Sorry, I just found a solution , which with Acrobat did'nt work.
    Here it is:
    - Open Windows Explorer .
    - Type or copy and paste the following into the address bar: %AppData%\Microsoft\Windows\Recent\AutomaticDestinations
    - Identify files that are comparatively larger in size than the rest of the file, such as files that have file size of 1 MB or more.
    - Delete the abnormal file.

  • ThinkVantage tools don't work anymore on X201

    Hey Guys,
I got a serious problem with my x201 and unfortunately I don't know since when.
Whenever I want to start a thinkvantage tool (Powermanager, access connections, lenovo gps, etc) I got an errormessage from dw20.exe which sounds like (translated from German): "The command 0x76f4c819 points on memory 0x3be0370c. Was not able to read". The only tool which is executable is fingerprint reader (out of sysconf).
    What could be the reason?
Further I got to mention that these tools although appear in the taskbar! Which means I can see battery monitor, AC monitor and I can even use fn+f5 to switch on/off the individual wireless devices (BT, WWAN, WLAN). But as soon as I double click on a symbol on the taskbar to lets say start access connections I got this message described above!
    What I already did:
Uninstall all lenovo thinkvantage software. Reinstall the newest version of all of them.
Later I thought dotnet framework could be the reason, because it says that lenovoupdate needed framework 2.0.
So I tested it with framework 4 and framework 2 running - nothing changed.
    My system:
    Lenovo X201 (3626)
    Intel Core i5
    4GB Ram
    Kingston SSDnow V100 128GB
Qualcomm Gobi2000 WWAN and GPS card
    Win7 Professional SP1
It's very annoying because I cant use my WWAN card anymore.. Everything worked fine until, I don't know, maybe some Win7-Updates changed the system??
    thanks for any help!!
    Andy

In my opinion, Microsoft .NET Framework is not needed. But i don't know, whether you have a program installed, which depends on it. .NET Framework 4 can be kept, because more and more programs use it.
How to check, whether Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 is installed?
Run Controlpanel - Programs and functions
Click on "Activate/deactivate programs and functions" near the left border
"Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5.1" must be checked
if unchecked, mark it and follow the instructions

  • How the get rid of Lenovo ThinkVantage Tools

    Hi
Has anybody an idea how to get rid of Lenovo ThinkVantage Tools in Windows 7? This stupid software doesn't have an uninstaller.
I am really angry that Lenovo provides software in 2010 that can't be uninstalled cleanly from a system.
    Gerhard
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Has anyone on Lenovo team knows how to properly uninstall "Lenovo ThinkVantage Tools"? I just received the NEW 2 desktop M91 series for our company to test wether it is suitable for us. But this annoying "thinkvantage tools" conflict with our System Centre Essentials and Symantec softwares. I had uninstall the tools in the control panel but still the application link still appear on the start up menu. If I right click the application link on the start up menu the properties of "lenovo ThinkVantage Tools" is listed below.
    C:\Windows\explorer.exe ::{26EE0668-A00A-44D7-9371-BEB064C98683}\2\::{A8A91A66-3A7D-4424-8D24-04E180695C7A}\Provider%5CMicrosoft.Base.DeviceDisplayObjects//DDO:%7B00000000-0000-0000-FFFF-FFFFFFFFFFFF%7D\cat{8AA6B0C2-14A6-4da8-BF36-F7D93ACE9ACE}
I want this application completely remove from the system and NOT just on a single profile. I call Lenovo Support here in Australia and the Tech claims that there's NO TELEPHONE SUPPORT available for this product. I am VERY frustrated considering that I recommend this product to be rolled out here in our company but I guess I have to re-think that again considering the SUPPORT is VERY POOR.

  • Thinkvantage Tools Program - Edge E520

    Hi,
I bought Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E520 with Free DOS, afterwards I have installed Genuine Win 7 Professional.
So after installing all necessary drivers I started to install Thingvantage programs (Access Connections, System Update, Active Protection System...)
I was wondering is there a utility that combines all together in a single menu? Something like Lenovo Thinkvantage Tools is mentioned in the Manual but I can't seem to find it on the web.
    Solved!

    hey Ante,
yes the ThinkVantage Toolbox can be considered a utility that combines all in a single menu. Currently on the website this particular software is missing and we apologize for that.
We are getting the link up as soon as possible. In the interim period you can use this instead : http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS014950

update: i just installed a single SATA HDD on the SAS array successfully so it looks like you can install any SATA device on any of the 10 available connectors.   the SATA drive had to be flagged as 'online' using diskmgmt.msc to get it to show up in windows.   however, i still recommend using the hard drives on the SATA controller and optical drives on the SAS controller.
on a side note, i benchmarked the drive using both the SAS and SATA controllers and speeds were identical.

  • Reporting tools and SAP BW

    Dear Sirs,
We have Business Objects BI 4.0 and SAP BW 7.3.
Actually we are using Web Intelligence and BEx Query to reporting.
We have not Business Layer (Universe) between BW and BO because BO it's not supported to create universe (unx) on BW. So we create document in WEBI using BEx Query.
We want to use Xcelsius (Dashboard Design) 2011 and I was thinking that we can use query from universe to connect with BW (new functionality in version 2011). Can we? Or maybe we should to connect to BW using "Connecttion to SAP BW"?
We want to use Explorer (on iPad and iPhone), but Explorer requires universe (unx).
Is not possible to create universe (unx, because unv is not supported via Explorer) based on SAP BW, is it true?
We should we do, when we want to use Explorer with SAP BW?
Do I understand connection between reporting tools and SAP BW:
Crystal Reports - can I use cubes or BEx queries
Xcelsius - using "Connection to SAP BW"
WEBI - BExqueries or universe (but only UNV - old version).
Explorer - in my opinion is not possible
Analysis for OLAP - drirect to cube in SAP BW
    Could you please comment.

    Hi
With the current version of the BI 4.0 SP2 BI Platform, one cannot create a universe (.UNX format) against BW using the OLAP connection. However you can create a universe (.UNX format) using the Relational connection (see OSS note: 1656905 - How to create UNX universe based on Business Warehourse InfoCubes). One limitation is the use of hierarchies with the relational connection.
Then you can create the Information spaces based on the universe (.UNX format) that the Explorer can use.
    BO Reporting tools:
    1. Crystal Reports for Enterprise = you can use the OLAP connection (BICS) directly against the BW InfoCubes or Queries, if queries already exist in the BW system then you can leverage these directly (less time spent recreating the entire query in Crystal)
    2. Xcelsius = you can use the BICS or Web Service or Universe to access the data
    3. Web Intelligence = you can use the OLAP Connection (BICS)
    4. Explorer = you can use a universe (.UNX format) via a Relational Connection
    5. Analysis for OLAP = you can use the OLAP connection (BICS) to either a query or InfoCube.
It is hoped that in Feature Pack 3 which will be released later this year, that missing functionalities will be delivered for BI 4.0.
    Regards
