Thoughts & opinions on delivering numerous large apps to RDS/XenApp environment via app-V 5.0 Sp2

So I am trying to convince the customer on the benefits of deploying app-v packages across all RDS servers rather than multiple silo's of apps.
They rightly have concerns about the performance as they have quite a few large applications that are up to 1.5Gb each, plus Office 2013 is itself 1Gb if you include Project and Visio in the download package.
Given the previous performance problems prior to v5 SP2 and the dreadful windows zip decompression performance, what are peoples thoughts around this in a RDS environment with sharedcontentmode enabled?
From my knowledge to date there could be up to 10+Gb worth of *.appv application files by the time most apps are packaged?
To deliver 10+Gb of apps to each server is also not efficient and is a significant increase in storage space requirements across upto 80 RDS servers (unfortunately they do not have de-dupe on the SAN). Plus this is not Microsoft best practise on RDS solutions
as far as I am aware...
Thoughts anyone or examples of how you may have approached such scenarios in the past?

Hi,
you're right, the SCS mode is intent for RDS environments, wheras originally VDI implementations were MS' focus ('There are people using desktop apps on a server OS? D'oh!' ;-)  )
AFAIK there are no public benchmarks out yet. I know the guys from www.projectvrc.com are working on one (and I know they are going to present some results during the European App-V User Group). So, let's see if we can start an educated conversation about
SCS here:
Almost nothing (except pointers) is locally stored on the client side. If an application request a file, the required 'bits' get downloaded from the central CS. Windows file system cache will, well, cache those bits in RAM (or maybe even page file). If the
file system cache is full, 'old' bits are drained and the new ones are loaded. If again 'old' bits are required, they have to be re-loaded from the central location.
In a VDI environment, this is not much of an issue. A user usually works with just a small set of apps, so s/he might be good with a very few GB of file system cache.
On an RDS server, namely a Special App Server, the situation is different. Many users are working will lots of applications, and because we'd like to avoid silos, basically every app can be launched on any server. So two users work on two different servers
with, let's say a 3D Application that loads a lod of libraries before launch. And then accidentially a user for Visual Studio hits the same server, purging some of the 3D-bits out of the file system cache.
If your RDS servers are physical machines with lots of RAM: no problem. But if you use virtual RDS servres with just 4 or 8 GB RAM, you could run into trouble (and I personally think that file-caching resources can't be Memory-de-doub'ed well). So, you may
create Silos...
Again, reality might not be as bad as I think of it, but as stated earlier... there is no public info about sizing and perfromance experience.

You can automatically save downloads without seeing the Open/Save/Cancel dialog in the Options:
orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Options > General > "Saves files to"
However, I can't think of a way to have the Open/Save/Cancel dialog always default to Save. I think mine suggests whatever I did last for the same type of content, but I haven't paid close attention.
I'm out of time to address the problem with "do this automatically" but there is one suggestion for why it could be grayed out in this article: [[Change what Firefox does when you click on or download a file]].
Is it possible you had a download-related extension before? To compare settings and extensions, please retain the Old Firefox Data folder on your desktop. Aside from checking the extensions in there, it would be interesting to run a text file comparison on your currently active prefs.js file and your old one in that folder.

  • Invalid checksum for iTunes? ... can't download large apps?

    I've noticed two things.
First, I've tried to download iTunes 11 from both the app store and a straight download, and, both ways (and every time -- 7 tries now), I get an invalid checksum. I've downloaded from Chrome; I've downloaded from Safari. I can't imagine the source is the problem, so what's happening there? My network connection seem otherwise solid, based on my ping rate to California, and standard web use.
Secondly, iTunes 10 won't download large apps. Neither the 'Magic the Gathering' update or the 'Grand Theft Auto: Vice City' app will download. (Both of those weigh in at over a gig.) At some point during the download, I get the warning, "An unknown error occurred (-50)." Smaller apps seem fine.
This is with a late 2008 13-inch Macbook Pro running 10.8.2.
    Help? ... and thank you!

Just need to find a way to get a hold of someone who can fix this.

  • Problem in downloading large App

Trying to download Mavericks but since its a large file, cant download in a single sitting. I leave it in pause mode and when i try to resume it shows an error and starts download from Zero.

I bought a large app (370MB)...and I am finding it difficult to download...when it's about 80% complete, it goes back to zero, and I'm tired. I felt like I wasted my money and If I go another day trying to download something that I bought and cannot enjoy it, I'll be forced to ask back for money. My internet connection is fine...it must be an apple problem!

  • Large app icon submission not working

I've been trying to update my app with recent code that fixed a bunch of bugs, but I'm currently stuck on this large app icon submission. I'm honestly using the same picture (1024x1024) as I used in my first submission of my app and now it just refuses to upload my picture. I tried using png, jpeg, jpg, tif, etc., and none of them work! Can anyone help me out here? I'm really trying to get this code pushed for the update. Cheers!

I purchased a large app early 2012. It was updated late 2012 to support iOS 6 and iPhone 5. Unlike other apps that I've purchased which say "open" when I view them in the App Store, this one shews a full purchase price. I've deleted and downloaded this app before. If I delete it again will I be made to pay for it again? or will it download with everything anew? or will I lose the app?

If you are completely confident that you didn't hide it, then you purchased those with different apple id. If you completely confident that you purchases with same apple id then you have hidden it. One of the other or you are speaking about a miracle. While miracles are possible they are not very likely. Try temporarily turning off all your firewall and antivirus software until the download has completed.

  • Large apps causing installs to crash my 3G iPhone

My iPhone 3g has been very unstable when installing apps. I have had to restore my first 3G iphone at around 3 times. I am now on my second iPhone after a visit to the apple store. Restored this iPhone around 4 times! I've been trying to figure out whats been going on. When I first install apps directly onto the iPhone with the iPhone app store every thing flys and works great. Then after a while installs start to take longer and longer some more than 20 minutes and then soon my iPhone will just reboot and hang at the apple logo, never gets to the springboard causing me to have to restore my iPhone.
After testing a bunch of things I think I've found the problem. I restored my iPhone, set it up as a new phone in itunes and only synced my contacts and safari book marks. On the iPhone I started to install apps. Apps installed fast, most taking about 20-30 seconds to install after the blue line reaches the end. I installed about 8 apps, then I installed Texas Hold'em . This took a while to install about 5 minutes. The size of the game 128mb is really big compared to the other apps in the store. After installing, I installed a small app an it took about a minute and half to install, seemed slow so I installed another small app took around 3 minutes to install. It seemed like the installs where slowing down. So I uninstalled those 2 apps and Texas Hold'em. I reinstalled the two apps. Each took around 20-30 seconds to install. So then I tried this with super monkey ball its size 35 mb. The install took about 4 minutes. I installed another small app took about minute and 20 seconds, next app about 3 minutes. Each app I installed after this increased in time, taking long and longer. I uninstalled super monkey ball and all the apps I installed after and reinstalled the small apps. Eeach one took no longer than 20-30 seconds.
There seems to be something wrong when large apps are installed with the iPhone apps store.

Connect the phone to iTunes. Go to the File menu in iTunes and choose Transfer Purchases.

  • Cannot download large app

I bought a large app (370MB)...and I am finding it difficult to download...when it's about 80% complete, it goes back to zero, (via iTunes or directly to my ipad) and I'm tired. I felt like I wasted my money and If I go another day trying to download something that I bought and cannot enjoy it, I'll be forced to ask back for money. My internet connection is fine...it must be an apple problem!

    Okay, got it!
    it's so simple.
Just click to Finder and "go to folder", enter /users/shared/SC Info and press go..
The Finder opens and shows now the hidden folder SC Info.
Drag the folder to trash and reboot the system.
After reboot it worked like a charm... all could be so easy... I don't know why, but it solved the problem immediately.

  • IPad gets very slow with large apps installed ?

    Hi,
I have a 64GB iPad 3 and I noticed it gets very slow when I install large apps. Apps larger than 1 GB.
I have bought a number of excellent reference apps, but can not keep them on my iPad together.
I have to delete one before I can install the next or else my iPad runs into trouble.
I can have about 5 large apps installed and no more.
It takes forever to boot, restarts, has delays when typing and crashes all the time with my large apps installed.
Is this a limitation of iOS 6, or is it because I have dropped below 10 GB of my 64GB storage.
Does my iPad use the storage for memory?
I bought a 64GB so that I could use my large apps.

10GB of free space should be adequate. Have you done a Reset?
How much space is your Other using? You may be able to reduce.
How Do I Get Rid Of The “Other” Data Stored On My iPad Or iPhone?
    http://tinyurl.com/85w6xwn
With an iOS device, the “Other” space in iTunes is used to store things like documents, settings, caches, and a few other important items. If you sync lots of documents to apps like GoodReader, DropCopy, or anything else that reads external files, your storage use can skyrocket. With iOS 5/6, you can see exactly which applications are taking up the most space. Just head to Settings > General > Usage, and tap the button labeled Show All Apps. The storage section will show you the app and how much storage space it is taking up. Tap on the app name to get a description of the additional storage space being used by the app’s documents and data. You can remove the storage-hogging application and all of its data directly from this screen, or manually remove the data by opening the app. Some applications, especially those designed by Apple, will allow you to remove stored data by swiping from left to right on the item to reveal a Delete button.

  • Downloading large apps via a second computer

I've moved to a new city for a new job opportunity. Everything is great except the home Internet charges in this city are outrageously expensive for such a small data amount!
My iPad has several large apps it needs updating which would blow my home Internet data usage for the month if downloaded by home Wifi.
I have free internet at work.
My question is could I setup iTunes on my work computer, (windows), and log into my apple account and download one or two of the large apps that I have brought, and then take them home and put them into the iTunes-mobile applications folder on my Mac (deleting the older version) and then Sync my iPad?
Would iTunes recognize that the app has been updated or is there some internal database that needs to be updated that recognizes the new version of the app?
Apart from using my employers Internet usage, everything else is legit.
    Thanks for your feedback.

You should be able to download the app to your normal computer (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2519) and get it onto yout iPhone that way.
If you are away from that computer, then you download all your apps to the iMac and then try syncing - I had a similar issue when I moved to a new computer and it said that it would delete all my apps off it, but it didn't (though I did copy all music and apps to it first).

  • App-V 5.0 SP2 with Mandatory Profiles

    Hi,
We are having some issues with App-V 5.0 SP2 with HFX2 and HFX4 on our Windows 7 x64 Clients
We use mandatory profiles and delete the local profile on logoff,
    HFX2 Issue:
The AppData\Local\Microsoft\AppV\Client\VFS\<GUID> is only created once, subsequent logins don't have the folder structure created for the package VFS and all folders have read/write access for the user, when they should follow the base OS folder permissions
We have found that a registry entry is created in HKLM\Software\Microsoft\AppV\MAV\Configuration\Packages\<GUID>\UserConfigEx\<USER-GUID>
if we manually delete this registry key then appv will re-create the VFS folders in local app data
AppV seems to be setting key's saying its created those folders and expects them to be there on the next login, is there a way to tell AppV that we are using mandatory profiles and to re-create the folders?
    HFX4 Issue:
Hotfix 4 is a bigger problem in that a registry entry for <USER-GUID> is created in HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\AppV\Client\Virtualzation\LocalVFSSecuredUser
The first time appv is used for that user, it works, all subsequent times appv packages fail to load unless that registry string is manually deleted.
Is there any way to fix App-V 5 to work with mandatory profiles which are deleted on logoff?
    Thanks!

    Hi Nicke,
The registry key's are located in HKLM, which causes permission problems as our uses are all standard users
the HFX2 issue sort of works, the
UserConfigEx key is created with the logged on user having read/write permissions, so as long as that user successfully runs a logoff script then the key is deleted, if the desktop crashes without running the logoff script and a new user logs in, then they
don't have the rights to delete the sub keys and all future app-v localappdata VFS permissions are broken on that client,
The HFX4 issue registry keys are all write protected from standard users,
I'm not 100% sure these are the only area's which are causing problems (they are just the ones I've found!) and that just deleting the registry entries completely fixes the problem.  I didn't go down the path of deleting HKLM keys as a user as it seemed
a bit of a brute force hack to me which I was trying to avoid :)
If I give users rights to delete HKLM\Software\Microsoft\AppV\MAV\Configuration\Packages subkeys
then I think they could break published applications if the <GUID> folders are somehow deleted?
I was actually pretty surprised to find out that App-V 5.0 stores permanent information about user's in the HKLM hive, I would have thought all of this should live in the HKCU hive!
I've not been able to find any documentation on how App-V uses HKLM keys to keep track of processes its already performed on a user and doesn't want to do again,
    Thanks!

  • App-V 5.0 SP2 RunVirtual Issue

    Hello,
in App-V 5.0 SP2 when using the RunVirtual feature, on adding iexplore.exe as a registry key entry with the corresponding package and versions ID's for a sequenced version of Silverlight, when launching Internet Explorer it does not open in the
virtual environment. However, if I launch iexplore.exe from the command line and specify the /appvve:<GUID>_<GUID> switch, iexplore.exe does open within the virtual environment and Silverlight pages load correctly. I was wondering if anyone had
    experienced this issue before? Thanks.
    Regards.
    http://www.b4z.co.uk

That looks OK to me, not sure why it wouldn't be working.
Try a trace with ProcMon when launching IE with the RunVirtual key enabled. That may indicate whether the key is being read or not.
