Thousands of radial shadings

I am writing a plotting package, and I would like to be able to display thousands of spheres on a page. I've successfully written code to use the radial shadings with an exponential function to make really nice looking spheres. When I plot a little over 4000 of them on one page, acroread on my linux box takes several minutes to render them all, and re-renders them every time I change the zoom.
I guess my big question is:
1. Am I using the right tool for the job? Are radial shadings a good way to go, and I just have an implementation issue, or do I need to look at some other possibility, like bitmaps?
2. If I just need to change my implementation to get them to work better, where should I be looking?
2a. Is it the exponential function? Should I try a sampling function instead?
2b. In my content stream, every single sphere is inside a "q [translation and scaling matrix] cm /Sh01 sh Q" construct. Would it be faster to define a different shading for each sphere so I don't have to keep saving/resetting the graphics state?

Yes, I'm running 8.1.2 on OpenSUSE linux with 2.4 GHz Opteron CPUs.
For the moment, I'm gunning for a plotting package that gives static 2D views of 3D data. Attempting to write U3D files and getting them hooked into a pdf file is a possible effort when/if I can get static 2D views to my satisfaction.
Currently I plot single color circles, either with or without an outline around the edge. With an outline runs the risk of turning the plot into a sea of black if there are thousands of tiny particles in the plot. Without an outline gives no means of knowing how many particles are in a particular color blob, or which ones might be in front.
But, I note that I can plot thousands of outlined, single color circles on a page and have the page render in less than a second.
I had hoped that radial shading would be a good compromise between outlines/no outlines-- individual particles defined while the contour colors remain clear with clusters of tiny particles.
Unfortunately, waiting 5 minutes for 4000 radial shadings to render is not an option. Many of my plots will have 10 - 20 thousand particles in them. This is why I was hoping that I was doing something stupid in my implementation.

Just keeps getting better

Tab Utilities is incompatible with FF17. Many thousands of users are now without a much needed add-on. Is there a fix?

This add-on is an important one to me and tens of thousands of others as well. Sadly this very useful add-on and functionality is now gone from my FF as of 17.. Many people are downgrading or refusing to upgrade solely because it will break this add-on.
In FF17 a major change was made to the function tosource's return value that broke not just this but many other add-ons as well. Now I don't have a problem with a change of standards and requiring everyone to update code to work with that. But this was handled in completely the wrong way by Mozilla IMO.
Where is the support to the add-on community that has loyally supported your product all these years and giving them a proper chance to migrate/change code to work with the new function return values?
Why was there no schedule with a phase-in plan and a deadline for such changes?
Heck, a phase-in plan could have included a phase-in period where the function would support both methods by issuing an extra parameter for the new functionality. Then you could gradually switch the main return to be the new format. That way existing plugins would still be fine.
It seems a bit horrible from an end user standpoint suddenly not having this great tool that improves the firefox experience so much. I know many others feel that same way about this add-on as i've seen countless comments about it, and i'm sure many others feel that way about add-ons that they use that also are now broken too.
I'm writing here to ask either Mozilla to offer a fix, or the larger community to see if there is some workaround/middle ground that could be found. Perchance write a JS Function that could be included/injected into the broken add-ons that would convert/reformat the response of that function call so it remains usable to them with the data they need?
I really hope someone can come up with some temp solution for everyone until more permanent ones can be developed.

I posted the same question a day ago with no response. I'm using an Acer x193w. You actually don't have to switch monitors to get it to work. Just make sure you turn off the monitor after shutting down the Mac mini (actually push the power button on the monitor, not just let it go to sleep). If you turn on the monitor (push the power button on the monitor), then power up the Mac mini, the monitor is recognized. The issue didnt exist with Snow Leopard for me. It only started after I started using Lion. Hope this issue gets fixed In a future OS update.

Can automator turn thousands of samples into Apple Loops? (VSL rep/runs)

Hello everyone,
First off, I'm familiar with how to build my own apple loops and find them to be VERY useful, especially in the application I'm about to describe. However, I find it quite tedious to build them manually, especially when dealing with thousands of samples. Thus I'm looking for the best/easist way to create apple loops, hopefully using Tigers "automator."
Heres my situation: I use/love VSL sample libs, which contain many articulations/phrases, but some of these are "tempo specific" such as the numerous instrument runs, repetition files, glissandos, crescendos, etc, and when doing a film score I cannot let tempo specific files dictate the tempo of the piece (the film does that). Thus I've started taking some of the VSL samples (especially the repetition and runs) and turning them into apple loops, which conform to the tempo of the piece. Within reason, the results are WONDERFUL allow me to continue to use these very realistic phrases at almost any tempo!
However, I've grown tired of manually converting these files to apple loops, and thus have only converted a handful of these phrases into apple loops. Whats worse is when I'm forced to stop the creative process to turn a phrase into an apple loop only to find that after all that time creating the loop, it doesnt work!
Is it possible to use Tigers automator to automatically convert .wav files into apple loops? This would be a great time saver, and would possibly allow for turning the thousands of samples into apple loops. Anyone currently doing this type of thing? Is it worth it in the end?

Hi Jonathan,
You can use Logic to create AIFFs of these files very quickly.
Then, open them in ALU.
Select all files.
Change 1 field.
Save.
You now have Apple Loops -- they will have a few few things automatically inserted such as guessed tempi -- they will almost always be set to 4/4 to the tempo closest to 120(?)... but they will load and many will load usably for your needs.
Now, I don't know exactly what you are facing with this concept but it sounds like a very big job and this will still leave much time hand tuning. If this is true, I recommend you have a look at Accelerando:

Accelerando contains several tools which will substantially decrease the tedium - and yes, it does use Automator. It works directly with Logic Pro, Apple Loops Utility - and more. Ultimately, you may be able to create workflows which handle this task with 1 gesture per Apple Loop - although a large library of workflows would be required to accomplish this to most users expectations so 2 or more gestures is more likely. of course, you can try to set up a more intelligent scheme if, say, the files can be filtered by an attribute such as their name.

HT1751 I successfully captured a recent itunes library, but then all the songs have "!" marks next to them and won't play. I have thousands of songs in multi folders of my external hard drive, surely there is a way to auto locate all songs on my hard driv

My desktop PC recently crashed and I'm trying to recapture all of my iTunes library playlist and songs. I was able to successfully capture the library, however when I tried to play a song, all have the exclamation mark "!" on them and ask that I locate the song. I successfully located some, but there has to be an automatic way to do this, rather than finding each one. I have thousands of songs located in multiple folders of my exteernal hard drive and need a way to find all songs automatically. Can someone help? Thanks!

This "original file cannot be found" thing happens if the file is no longer where iTunes expects to find it. Possible causes are that you or some third party tool has moved, renamed or deleted the file, or that the drive it lives on has had a change of drive letter. It is also possible that iTunes has changed from expecting the files to be in the pre-iTunes 9 layout to post-iTunes 9 layout,or vice-versa, and so is looking in slightly the wrong place.
Select a track with an exclamation mark, use Ctrl-I to get info, then cancel when asked to try to locate the track. Look on the summary tab for the location that iTunes thinks the file should be. Now take a look around your hard drive(s). Hopefully you can locate the track in question. If a section of your library has simply been moved, or a drive letter has changed, it should be possible to reverse the actions.
Alternatively, as long as you can find a location holding the missing files, then you should be able to use my FindTracks script to reconnect them to iTunes .

How do I divide thousands of songs currently in a single iTunes account into 2 separate iTunes accounts?

When my daughter was small, I set up a single iTunes account that we both could use. Now, years later, she has amassed thousands of songs and apps that I have no interest in. Is there a way to set up a separate iTunes account for her and move her music, videos, etc to that account and delete them from my existing iTunes account?

I am no itunes account expert but I do not think it is possible to transfer file ownership between accounts.

What the **** is going on with Apple?
I can't sync my iPhone and MacBook Pro. Sometimes is discovers both devices but then fails to sync. Other times neither recognises each other even when they're both in the list. As part of Mavericks, I'm supposed to be able to share Maps with other devices, but it won't recognise my iPhone. Why the **** did I spend nearly three dollars on Apple products when I now have to go back to my PC for basic features. I've spent hours on the phone with Apple about problems, and while the service might be immediate and very couteous, most the time they don't understand what I'm talking about or they haven't got a solution. With thousands of features on the iPhone and Macbook Pro, I only wanna use about 2 dozen.
Here's some of the things I don't even bother with now -
iTunes - Can't delete recent plays, can't stop it playing from that same list the moment you plug it into a plug and play, so huge and cumbersome with too many features, but just try playing music only. I don't want album covers or info downloaded from the Net. I don't want all the songs segregated into albums and the like. I play songs and then try to find them in Recently Played and they're not even there, but songs I've play over a year ago and which I don't want arer still stubbornly there and can't be deleted. Media Player is the same. I'ma prefoessinal musician and sound engineer and I've never known anyone to have used more than 10% of the features in iTunes. Who the **** are the Apple tech heads developing products for? Scientific Audiologists? Pathetic program, don't even use nowadays, but it still has the ability of popping it's ugly head up from time to time.
Audio - I run Logic Pro X and EVERYTIME I connect a new audio interface, I have to go to Preferences>Sound and change the Input and Output. EVERYTIME!!!!!!!!!! Sometimes when recording, I have to the correct the sound preferences 40 times a day, I've counted them on a number of occasions. Apple is meant to be THE audio expets and yet I'm back using Cubase on my PC or even sometimes having to go back to my old iMac and Logic Pro 9!! Along problems I'm experiencing with Logic Pro x, Apple now wants me to return my MacBook pro to them possibly for up to six weeks. This is after I've transferred my whole business on to the MacBook Pro and literally can't do without it.
Contacts - they don't sync with iCloud, other devices, Skydrive or any other synced app, although, sometimes they do.
The Dock - some of the Apps in the Dock when already opened won't open with a click or double click. I have to right click on the icon, Show All Windows and only then can I open the App. On my PC, I open all programs in "their dock" with one click.
Let me explain what will happen now. Nothing. I can't afford to give my MacBook Pro to Apple to fix or even call them up again about these probs cause it takes HOURS and HOURS and HOURS and HOURS. Last time I rang them, it cost me about $300 in lost productivity.
I think that when Steve Jobs passed away, Apple died along with him.

ITunes lost all of my files on the external drive, thousands of songs. Is there a way to load them back in without doing one at a time?

I've just updated the lates iTunes, and now it seems to have lost all of my music. I have thousands of songs on an external drive, none of them can be found...the songs are in multiple folders on the external drive so the media folder to the external folder doesn't fix the problem...iTunes isn't seeing songs that are in different folders with sub folders. Is there a way to have iTunes discover the music on the external drive to avoid reloading each of them one at a time?

When you first download iTunes onto a PC, it will give you the option to allow iTunes to search for your music. I'd suggest removing iTunes from your PC, connecting your external drive and then download iTunes from scratch. I'm pretty sure if you let it, it will find the music for you.

I open the e-mails on my laptop, so I don't usually need to open them on the iMac. Whenever I use select all, and the move to trash, they always seem to reappear again. Prospectively, I know I can change the e-mail settings in preferences, but that doesn't help get rid of what is already there. Any suggestions?

You mention 2 computers. Not sure how one relates to the other. Are the messages on one and not the other?
Are they in the Inbox, or another local folder you created? If a local folder, delete the folder.
Do you have anything used to sync messages between the 2 computers? If so, disable it.
Select the messages and choose Delete instead of moving to the trash.
If that doesn't work, rebuild the mailbox, quit Mail and reopen and try again.
If all fails, delete the account from the computer. Since it is POP, when you re-add the account, there won't be any messages to download.

I was using help from apple to correct a software problem which they were able to fix but somehow i got thousands of pictures moved from my macbook pro over onto my phone. I am not able to delete them from my phone as i can only see edit but i can't find an option of delete or trash to use to get rid of them. For some reason there are pictures there that are not even mine that i desperately would like to get off my phone but can't figure out how to delete when they are in albums and large quantities. I know how to delete when they are on camera roll as the trash can appears at the bottom of the picture. Please help me so i don't have to go back for support tomorrow on the phone. TS1559 I must say I am very dissapointed with some of apples ethics. I have spent thousands of dollars on iphones and ipods not to mention hundreds in the itunes store, I now have a iphone for I cant even get wifi or bluetooth on?

I have tried every suggestion availiable. I have no service to my iphone 4 and would just like to use it as an ipod. I cannot connect to wifi no matter what I do, infact i can't even turn on wifi because it is will not move, like it is frozen or something. I am really choked that wifi and bluetooth are not availiable to me. I also dont not understand the reasoning in charging me 35 dollars to talk to someone about a products apple sold and provided me with. I have spent thousands of dollars on apple products over the last few years for kids, myself, and family, not to mention I have spent thousands in the Itunes store for these products that are of no use to me. It absolutely disgusts me! I also bought an i pod touch for my stepson four or five years ago. He came to me the other day and asked me if he could use one of my Ipods. I asked him where his was? He told me it never worked right from day one and kids being kids, he never told me. So I plugged it in charged it up and all it does is is make static when it's turned on. You cant even listen to music on it. with head phones or otherwise.
