Throwing PL/SQL Exceptions to Java

Hi, anyone have experience with calling a PL/SQL stored procedure from Java?
I am using the CallableStatement, but my issue is capturing error messages
thrown by the stored procedure. In the exception block of the stored
procedure I throw errors using the RAISE_APPLICATION_ERROR.
Will that raise an SQLException in Java, or does the error message get set to the CallableStatement interface's Warning message (accessed through CallableStatement.getWarnings();)? Or perhaps something else? If anyone has
some previous experience in this area, please let me know. Thanks,
Mac

Shravan,
Actually, I already know that that works. In fact, you can create two OUT parameters, on with the error code and one with the message. In your exception block you should be able to assign values to each one. When you do this, don't use the RAISE_APPICATION_ERROR procedure, for it will clear your OUT parameters.
The issue is that this does not raise a SQLException, which is what I would like to do. Since JDBC already has the facility to raise an SQLException with an unhandled error condition in a Procedure, I am wondering if RAISE_APPLICATION_ERROR allows programmers to pipe custom errors into the JDBC as SQLException objects. The reason I want to do this is because I would like my PL/SQL procedure to handle exception conditions internally, and deliver an error which is meaningful to consumer of the service provided by the PL/SQL procedure. I can accomplish this with an OUT parameter or two, but I'd prefer to send exception conditions out of the procedure as actual SQLExceptions, rather than out parameters.

  • Sql exception : maximum open cursors exceeded

    I run applicatio to insert data into the table, and update data into the table, when it processes more than 800 record, it throws the sql exception :maximum open cursors exceeded.
    Who knows the reason?
    Thanks.

    I have a similar problem where in I close the Result set, Statement and close the connection in a finally block. Even though, the connection.close() executes sucessfully, with no exceptions being thrown, I still see the connection opened in ORacle. This builds up connections for our application and by the end of the day we are up with about 500 connections open and rising.
    After closing the connection, I did check the value for connection.isClosed() and it still says false (like before the connection was closed). Since we are using a custom Connection manager to pool the connections, my interpretation is that even after the connection is closed, it doesn't get released. I have tried setting the connection to Null, used the finalize method to still check for connection != null and do one more close(), but still the connection is still open.
    Am I mistaken in my thinking that even though the connection seems to be closed(), it doesn't get released until the GC runs and picks it for disposal? For every job, after the process is completed we have about 7 open connections and at times the number stays at 7 for some more jobs (Web application driven by servlets and some rmi in the background process). I thne see a surge in the connection after some more jobs are processed and so am not sure whether its the connection manager to blame. Could any one have any pointers on this issue.
    Thanks for your response.

    You are running the Examples application shipped with WLS, which I guest
    the
    correct DB to connect with is Cloudscape yet to Oracle, unless you make

    That 'getInt' method returns a Java 'int'. It will attempt to convert the actual data value in the result set column to an int.
    If the value is too large, too small or isn't even numeric you will get an exception.
    Isolate the problem (e.g. by debugging) to the row giving the exception and then examine the actual data value. If you are using NetBeans (or other) you can use the 'getString' method to see what the value is that is causing the problem.
    The actual 'solution' to the problem depends on your database, the table column definition and the business rules being implemented.
    You table could contain 'dirty' data and contain values larger than you want to be stored.
    Or your actual data could be correct and you are just using 'getInt' instead of 'getBigDecimal' or other method to get the value.
    Don't apply a 'solution' until you actually know what the problem is and the proper solution to implement.

  • How to throw or catch sql exception for executeReader sql adapter

    Wcf sql adapter was created and executeReader was used.
    When an invalid sql statement was constructed and send it to wcf sql adapter, it will hanging there, and no response. No exception was catched even though send chape  was inside a catch block. How can I catch this kind of exception
    or throw this exception ? I need to give client an exception resposne.
    thanks
    Gary

    I used scope with exception handle which has Exception object type: "System.SystemException".
    I guess this type "System.SystemException" can catch any exception, including sql exception. Maybe I am wrong. I got error from window event:
    A message sent to adapter "WCF-Custom" on send port "WcfSendPort_SqlAdapterBinding_DalCore_Custom" with URI "mssql://shig-quad-2k3e1//DataSourceOne?" is suspended.

  • VO Errors ,,,,, procedurejava.lang.sql.exception & Java.lang.NullPointerExc

    Hi All,
    I have extended the standard CO.
    Below is my code.

    super.processRequest(pageContext,webbean);
    processFormRequest(OAPageContext pageContext,OAWebBean webbean)

    Please suggest me which statement to use call the Attributes & VO . Please do let me know if anything is wrong in the code.
    I am getting the below errors :
    1. Cannot call the procedurejava.lang.sql.exception Method in & out parameters extends::1
    2. Java.lang.NullPointerException
    Can any one please help me out , to overcome this issue. Its bit urgent
    Thanks,
    Kalyan

    Hi Kalyan,
    So you want to get the value of DisplaydetailsVO.Runid attribute
    and then use it for calling a package?
    and the attribute is Runid or RunId
    you can put the below code to get all the attributename and its values in the VO.(change the VO, AM names according to your customizations)
    Then you can get what should be attributeName you should be using it, and I am not sure about your requirement, you might need to call before super.processFormRequest().
    Get all the attribute from a VO with Attribute Names in Custom CO
    OAApplicationModule rootAM = pageContext.getRootApplicationModule();
    OAApplicationModule apprAM = (OAApplicationModule)rootAM.findApplicationModule("AppraisalsAM");
    String offlineStatus = (String)apprAM.invokeMethod("getOfflineStatus",new Serializable[]{appraisalId+""});
    OAViewObject appraisalVO = (OAViewObject)apprAM.findViewObject("AppraisalVO");
    if(appraisalVO !=null)
    AppraisalVORowImpl appraisalVORow = (AppraisalVORowImpl) appraisalVO.first();
    if(appraisalVORow !=null)
    int attrCount = appraisalVO.getAttributeCount();
    writeLog("XXRBG",pageContext,"Attrbuute count "+attrCount);
    String[] attributeNames = appraisalVORow.getAttributeNames();
    for (int i = 0 ;i< attributeNames.length ;i++ )
    writeLog("XXRBG",pageContext," Name "+attributeNames[i] +" = "+appraisalVORow.getAttribute(i));
    Thanks,
    With regards,
    Kali.

  • The troubles with creating SQL function in Java

    Hi!
    I use Oracle 10g and connect to it from Java application. I need in creating SQL functions from Java code.
    In Java I have:
    Statement stm = null; try{     stm = dbConnection.createStatement();     stm.executeUpdate( query ); }catch(SQLException ex){     throw ex; }finally{     try{ stm.close(); }catch(Exception ex){ stm.close(); } }
    And I'm passing the next SQL function:
    create or replace function get_me return number is
    result number;
    begin
    select 5 into result from dual;
    return result;
    end;
    This code is run successful, but I can't call this funtion, because it has status Invalid
    I'm looked the next error: PLS-00103: Encountered the symbol "" when expecting one of the following: . @ % ; is authid as cluster order using external character deterministic parallel_enable pipelined aggregate
    But I don't understand, What the matter? From Oracle Enterprise Manager I can create this function without problems. So, I wrote the wong Java code. Also, I can't find my error :(
    May be, do u have the some ideas?
    Thank you very much!

    Post the whole pl/sql code please.
    To run PL/SQL from within java you'll need callablestatement.

  • Issue with Oracle.sql.NUMBER in Java Stored Procedure

    When we try to make a call to the Oracle.sql.NUMBER(String) inside a java stored procedure and pass values from '01' to '09', it throws java.lang.StringIndexOutOfBoundsException: String index out of range: 3
    We use Oracle 9.2.0.6 - JServer Release 9.2.0.6.0.
    It works fine for other values. Please find below the code used for simulating the issue outside the application. Thanks.
    create or replace and compile java source named testNumber as
    import oracle.sql.NUMBER;
    import java.sql.SQLException;
    public class TestNumber
           public static String convertNumber(String parm) {
                     NUMBER nTest;
                     try {
                             nTest = new NUMBER(parm);
                             return "TRUE";
                     }catch (SQLException sqle) {
                             return "FALSE";
    create or replace function test_number (p_str in varchar2) return varchar2 as
    language Java name 'TestNumber.convertNumber(java.lang.String) return
    java.lang.String';
    select test_number('05') from dual;  - Throws exception ORA-29532: Java call terminated by uncaught Java exception: java.lang.StringIndexOutOfBoundsException: String index out of range: 3
    select test_number('5') from dual; - Works fine
    select test_number('010') from dual; - Works fine

    Siva,
    I'm only guessing, but it could be an Oracle bug, in which case I suggest checking with Oracle Support.
    (You do have a support contract, don't you? ;-)
    Did you try compiling and running your java class "TestNumber" outside the database?
    Class "oracle.sql.NUMBER" should be in Oracle's JDBC driver, I believe.
    Good Luck,
    Avi.

    Hi,
    This could be one of those cases where using Java 7 versus Java 6 makes a difference, or perhaps there is some conflict with the JDBC driver version. So, a few things to try...
    1. Make sure your installation's SetJavaHome line in ...\sqldeveloper\sqldeveloper\bin\sqldeveloper.conf points to a Java 6 JDK.
    2. If (1) does not work, also uncheck the Use OCI/Thick driver box in Tools -> Preferences -> Database -> Advanced.
    3. If (1) and (2) do not work, also copy the ojdbc6.jar from any Oracle client you might have installed to your installation's ...\sqldeveloper\jdbc\lib directory
    I would think doing just (1) should be sufficient. If on Mac OS, use sqldeveloper-Darwin.conf instead.
    Hope this helps and please post back here and let us know, one way or the other,
    Gary

  • DatabaseMetaData.getAttributes throwing 'unsupported feature' exception

    Hi, maybe someone can help me with this.
    For a given schema, I'm trying to find the definition of a user-defined type. However, the getAttributes method of DatabaseMetaData throws an exception, claiming that the feature is unsupported.
    This is the code:
    Connection connection = null; ResultSet resultSet = null; try { connection = DriverManager.getConnection( URL, USERNAME, PASSWORD ); DatabaseMetaData dbMD = connection.getMetaData(); System.out.printf( "%s %d.%d%n", dbMD.getDatabaseProductName(), dbMD.getDatabaseMajorVersion(), dbMD.getDatabaseMinorVersion() ); resultSet = dbMD.getAttributes( null, null, "BATCH_T", "%" ); // this is line 32 // code to print the ResultSet } finally { if( resultSet != null ) resultSet.close(); if( connection != null ) connection.close(); }
    And this is the output:
    Oracle 10.2 Exception in thread "main" java.sql.SQLException: Unsupported feature         at oracle.jdbc.OracleDatabaseMetaData.getAttributes(OracleDatabaseMetaData.java:10980)         at udttest.Main.main(Main.java:32)
    The driver is the very latest one from the Oracle site, ojdbc6.jar, version 11.2.0.2.0. According to the JavaDocs of OracleDatabaseMetaData, the getAttributes method has been there since 9.0.2. So does this means that the method has merely been present, and always throws this exception?
    Alternatively, is there another way of programmatically retrieve information about a user-defined type?
    Thanks,
    - Peter

    Yes, but the question was not how PL/SQL could know about how a Java object looks like, but how Java can know how a PL/SQL object looks like.You said the following.
    +"One issue we have at work is to pass to or receive from a PL/SQL stored procedure a Java object."+
    What I read from that is that you wish to get/send a "java object" to PL/SQL.
    Thus PL/SQL would in fact need to know what a "java object" is.No, you forgot to read the context: I wanted to know how Java could figure out how an Oracle user-defined type looked like, not the other way around. This business of "PL/SQL knowing about a Java object" is something you invented, that you keep harking on, and which I never said. So could you please drop it?
    I read what you posted, not your mind.
    Well, I could think of having the business logic for an application in PL/SQL, and using Java to create an API or web > > > Specifically, it's about an SMS sending application, which is interacting with just one table in Oracle and an SMS-C. Want to send an SMS? Insert it into the table. Want to receive one? Read it from the table. Any application that wants to send any number of SMS's, would therefore interact with this database, and a lot of things can be done purely in Oracle, without the need of having a separate application requiring the attention of support staff.Which I can implement completely and easily without using PL/SQL user defined types.Really? There are a lot of optional parameters when sending an SMS. It's not just sender, recipient and text content. So if I want to send, say an identical message to 10,000 recipients, or I want to send 10,000 individual messages; in both cases, with certain parameters for such things like time-outs, SMS-C port, protocol ID, data coding, delivery report options, priority, and all the other things that SMPP allows you to define, how would you pass those in a manner that doesn't lead to dozens of stored procedures, or very long parameter lists?
    Standard normal form in relational databases - an option table.
    And I doubt a valid format for delivery would work with 10,000 recipients stored in a single UDF verus a receiptant table.
    Not to mention of course that the fact that there might be one case for a UDF doesn't mean that the usage is a good idea for most applications. Or even that one application that uses a single UDF will need more than one of them.
    Restating what I said "...doesn't mean that it *normally* a good idea to use it."
    To clarify your confusion about that statement it means that there will in fact be some cases where it is acceptable but most cases it is not.
    Or do you prefer calling stored procedures with endless parameter lists? Or to have a whole bunch of insert and update statements called from Java?No idea what you are talking about. See the above example about sending SMS messages.
    Option table.
    First what you mention above is a standard idiom in all programming languages and used extensively since interactions between programming languages and relational database began.What, whole loads of stored procedures, or doing all the updates and inserts from Java? We've come to the conclusion that the inability to validate an SQL statement in Java source code is a bugger, and that it's better to do this sort of thing in a stored procedure. Also, using arrays means a significant performance improvement, and an array of objects/user-defined types is the next thing that comes to mind.
    That will not be a consideration in most applications. And for those applications where there is a proven performance bottleneck at the database layer most applications would be better served with one or more of the following
    1. Redoing the architecture/design
    2. Using a caching mechanism.
    3. Even look at redoing the requirements.
    Secondly I have no idea what you mean by "endles parameter lists". I do not have that problem. If you do then I can only suggest that you should look at problems with your design rather than than attempting to solve it with your implementation.If you have a lot of parameters, like with sending SMS messages, some of which are optional whilst others are not, and when many of these parameters are identical between different insert statements, you have two options:
    * use very long parameter lists.
    * use user-defined types; for example, an array with 'recipient + messages' types, and a single 'all other options' type.
    Or an option table.
    Perhaps not, but I didn't take off at a tangent. Anyway, one way of preventing binding is by having one of the frameworks figure out on its own what the other is doing. The whole reflection and annotation thing in Java lets you do that. Unfortunately, the getAttributes() method does not.
    First as you yourself noted it is irrelevant.No, that's something you claimed. When you ask for an example, don't brush them off as being irrelevant.
    My mistake then.
    Second dynamic interface code is NOT a mechanism that reduces coupling. The fact that it is dynamic does not alter the dependency.It reduced coupling between source code, which is what it's all about. I can always fix a library; it's a lot easier than changing dozens of applications.
    No it doesn't. Coupling is coupling. The manner of calling the methods doesn't alter the semantics that require that the method is called in the first place.
    That is similar to claiming that something like perl/javascript is less "coupled" because the language is interpreted versus C++ where the method calls are compiled. Which of course is not true.
    I can store data in a database, any database, in any number of ways. None of which would require a Oracle user defined type.True, but I'm using Oracle for more than just storing data. PL/SQL is extremely powerful for certain operations, and it'd be silly not to employ that power.Which has nothing to do with what I said.Quite frankly, I'm at a loss what point exactly you're trying to make. Passing data between Java and Oracle user-defined types and arrays is a total pain, so as a programmer I'm trying to find a way to do this in a standard way, something that can be put in a library. I agree that it a complex issue.
    It however is not something that most applications need however since most do not need UDFs.
    And so I have written such a library: small, database-agnostic (should work with any JDBC data source, although I haven't tested it yet), but with annotations to mark what UDT a class maps to, and to what field within the UDT each field of the class maps to. It's the annotation bit I was wondering whether it could be avoided. Obviously, because Oracle doesn't support the getAttributes method, it would no longer be database-agnostic. Which is not really a problem, because we only use Oracle, unless a vendor supports only some other database.
    Not sure what that means since most other databases do not support UDFs.
    That fact that a feature exists is not by itself a reason to use it. Java has 'strictfp' but I have never had a single business need that required that I use it. As such if I saw someone attempting to use it or stating that it must be used then I would insist that the provide specific details driven from the business needs that required its usage.The fact that you cannot think of a use or a business need, does not mean one does not exist. I suggest you re-read my first post, since that is not what I said.
