Thunderbolt to VGA works find, to HDMI no longer works

I have a late 2011 model Macbook Pro, running the latest Yosemite update.  I can plug in my Thunderbolt to VGA adapter and everything works just fine.  But when I plug in my Thunderbolt to HDMI adapter, the display will not be detected.  I've tried holding option to manually detect displays and nothing happens.  The screen will flicker as if it senses another display has been connected.  I don't know if this is due to Yosemite, for it worked just fine before the update.

Hi all,
I was having the same problem with Yosemite and thunderbolt to HDMI but have found a sort of a solution or at least a bit more info that might lead to someone having a eureka moment. I have a Mac Book Pro, my partner a Mac Book Air. I bought a thunderbolt to HDMI cable from eBay so my partner could plug her Air into the TV. When the cable arrived, it would not detect our LG TV from either computer. So a bit of playing around and this is what I found.
I plugged the cable from my Pro direct to the HDMI port on the TV and nothing.
I also tried from the Pro to the HDMI port on amplifier of the surround sound system and again nothing.
However, if I plug the cable from my PRO directly to the TV HDMI and select that HDMI port on the TV initially still nothing. But if I then plug a normal hdmi cable from my amp to the Mac Pro's HDMI port, suddenly the thunderbolt cable works and the Display Preferences see the LGTV. I checked that the correct hdmi port was selected for the direct connection and I could even turn off my amplifier to make sure that I was not seeing the wrong signal and it still worked.
It seems that there needs to be either a base signal or an earthing through the MacBook Pro's HDMI port for it to switch into an external monitor mode that will detect a thunderbolt to HDMI connection. This is fine for my Mac but as my partner's Air only has a thunderbolt port and no HDMI port it still doesn't work with her MAC.
Hopefully someone will see this and have a brainwave.

  • [Helix] Panel replaced twice digitizer dead and hdmi no longer working

    hi all,
Appologies for the length, but despite my frustrations over aspects of the helix (fan, heat, digitzer not always working etc) I've been happy that I'd bought the device as a "right choice", hence the high level of frustration at things going differently...
3-4 weeks ago my helix started suffering with up to half the screen no longer working (from simply black to an interference style pattern).  At this stage HDMI out worked as did the digitzer, even if I couldn't see what the pen would click on.
I phoned up the CH support line (in English) and ended up with a number of nice call center people who said I'd have an engineer out for the next business day.  I then had a period of 3 days without being called, and after chasing on the support was informed a part had been ordered.  Two days later I had a visit from the engineer.
The on-site engineer, like the call staff, was very nice (even in the face of having to sit in a restaurant to look at the panel).  He returned the device the next day with a brand new panel.  However I then discovered the digitzer wasn't working.
A week later after a series of remote software installations and bios upgrades another on-site engineer came out.  He too was very pleasent, and was also visibily irratated that the digitzer didn't work after yet another panel swap.
In all cases I had to chase the support to find out what the current status was.  This I find to be poor customer service - a simple email or status page would have been great and let me know even a little of what was going on.
Whats worse service is that I still, after chasing again, have no idea what course of action I should take.  One option the engineer gave was to send the device away for up to 4 days (to esag), or perhaps order a new motherboard or other piece....
This is my first, and at this rate probably my last thinkpad, so I have no idea what I should expect and no great deal of confidence despite the clear best intentions of those with whom I've interacted that even if I send it away I'll get a fixed laptop back.  The knowledge on helix's in ch simply seems to low.
Does anyone here, lenovo guys of course included, have any clues as to what I can expect / what my next actions should be?
    Cheers,
    Chris

well to answer my own question and make sure others know to stay away from Helix / possibly Lenovo...
I had the machine replaced.  The DOA team and the lenovo team were again great, I can't state this clearly enough.  But they are helping on a badly made / designed / engineered product.  It overheats, the pen stops working (usb device not recognized etc), could be the flex in the screen but its definitely a hardware problem.
The replacement came, worked for 2 weeks and then died.  Then I had to go through the same remote support - install everything - process as before.   Again, as before, the machine was simply not functioning.
The replacement got replaced.  The new one worked for 6 weeks before it started happening again.  As of last week the pen no longer works at all, same as before.
Off to start another round of attempting to get a replacement or this time a refund.
Again to be clear, there is only one device on the market that has the same functionality as this - the Fujitsu, and I love the functionality and the excellent keyboard, but I can't really rely on the machines quality at all.
More accurately I can only rely on the lack of build quality :<

  • Mini dvi to HDMI no longer working to t.v.

Hello. For months I was able to use the mini dvi to HDMI to use my Samsung HD t.v. as a monitor from my Macbook Pro. Suddenly one day when I started it up, the t.v. said "No Signal" and then the Macbook Pro goes to sleep. If I take out the mini dvi it will wake up again, but the moment I put it back the t.v. goes back for a second the way it usually would when it first recognizes the mac, then the mac goes to sleep again. If I look at the built in display, I can see that it isn't even detecting the Samsung is hooked up any more. Could the video card have already gone bad? It isn't even six months old.

I'm having similar problems. I have a Toshiba Regza 1080p HDTV and frustrated that I cannot get my audio and video to work selecting one INPUT source on the TV. I used to stream Netflix with the minidiv and a separate mini stereo cable and it worked! until I moved and voila it stopped working. Grrrrr. I switched to a mini stereo y cable when a technician told me perhaps my audio cable was bad. Tried every combination of display setting on my Macbook Pro (OSX 10.5.8) and I'm stumped. Little to no sound setting on my MBP as some forums advise that I select an HDMI output. BL: My MBP sends audio out (thru HD Colorstream 1 audio input) and video using minidvi-HDMI to Toshiba's HMDI 1 (tried HDMI 2; etc.) Nothing works. Since only one input may be selected thru the HDTV at any given time I cannot figure out what I need to do the get the audio from Colorstream HD1 and HDMI video to synchronize. I just read about the Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Adapter Pro w/Optical Audio cable and wondering if that will push my audio from MBP and video to the Toshiba HDMI port thus allowing me to select one input source on my Toshiba 1080p HDTV and perhaps being a solution? Before I go out and buy this I need some help from you smart folks. Thank you!

  • Find my iphone no longer works.

  • Finder and Spotlight no longer working

    Hi guys,
Following the latest 10.4.3 update both Spotlight and Finder are refusing to work - no results are being returned, even having re-installed the 10.4.3 Common update.
I have followed instructions to restart the Spotlight index/database, however this too has not resolved the problem.
Unfortunately being a recent Windows -> Apple OSX convert, I am not too familiar with the inner workings of my Mac Mini. If you have any suggestions please let me know.
As with other posts, Finder is reporting its version number as 10.3.2 - whether this has any relevance I don't know. Although a lot of members have been kind enough to recommend Freeware/Shareware search programs, this goes beyond the point of having such a functionality already in the operating system.
I hope this issue is addressed in a subsequent update.

Finder is reporting its version number as 10.3.2
Can you confirm this? With OS X 10.4.3, the Finder should be version 10.4.2.

  • Find my iDevices no longer works with Time Capsule

Since switching to iOS 5 and OS 10.7.2, Find my iPhone (iPad/Mac) no longer finds any devices connected to my Time Capsule. If I turn off WiFi on my iPhone, then the service will eventually find it (but not immediately). Otherwise the service says all of the devices connected via WiFi are actually offline. I don't know what other options to choose to make this work. Any help appreciated!

have you upgraded to the new ios5 software? if so that could be the issue and contact apple.

  • HT201365 Find My iPhone no longer works for me to know where my wife and children's phones are. In earlier IOS versions, I added my iCloud account to their devices and only had Find My iPhone function active.  Can't do that now; what do I do?

Before IOS 7, I created an account on my wife and childrens iPhones, iPads and iPod devices with my iCloud account, only having the Find My iPhone function turned on.  It worked great.  Now, with IOS 7, it is not working and I don't have the option to have the Find My iPhone function on my iCloud account on their devices.  Does anyone know how to make this work?  My family loses their devices frequently and I am concerned I won'e be able to help them find them.  Thanks!!

They only need their main iCloud account to have Find My iPhone on. If your account is not their main account it won't work. Only one account can enable that function on a device. They don't need to have the app on their devices unless you want them to find you.
If you can see the devices when you log into their accounts on your Find My iPhone app they are being recognized by the app. But as Winston said if they're not turned on, if they are not on a network, cell or wifi, then they will read as offline. This often happens when I look for my wife's phone when she is at work, her wifi system there does not keep the connection active when the device goes to sleep and in some areas of the building there is poor to no cell connection. And sometimes the service just doesn't pick them up for no obvious reason.
iOS 7 has several annoying glitches right now that hopefully will be resolved soon and this could be one for you. I would try this again by having all the devices in one location , restart all of them, make certain the function is enabled on all of them and that wifi is connected ( if you have a wifi network available ) or that they are connected to a cell network with a strong signal. Then launch the app on your phone and log in with their accounts, their locations should show up.

  • Hdmi no longer works

I use hdmi cable to connect macbook to lg tv.
This worked perfectly before recent software update, now sound only and screen saver-- no picture?

Have you tried resetting the nv ram?
         Turn off your mac
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R.
         Turn on your Mac.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys immediately after you hear the startup sound.
Hold these keys until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for a second time.
         Release the keys.

  • Right-click finder context menu no longer works

When I bring up the context menu on any file/folder in my finder or desktop, none of the actions work - such as "Move to Trash", "Get Info", "Duplicate". In debugging I removed MagicPrefs, thinking it might issues with the mouse.
It works if I used shortcut keys, or drag files to the trash.
I'm not sure what changed recently - any help would be greatly appreciated.
    -John

I'm able to bring up the menu (by right-click or control-click), all the options are enabled (nothing grayed out) ... when I choose any of them, nothing happens. No UI error, nothing in any of the logs I looked at.
I switched to a wire-mouse and got the same result. I used the track pad and got the same result.
Another observation - the labels do work, I can label a file some color and then remove it.

  • Acer 9500 projector hdmi no longer works

The other day I turned on my projector and it will no longer recognize any input through the 2 hdmi. I tried a different hdmi cord and another source but it still wont recognize anything.  I sent it off to find out what is wrong and they told me it needs a new main board for $1100. Is that right? Is it not possible to fix the hdmi input without replacing the whole main board?

    Rebelbac,
If the projector is not under the manufacturer's warranty you are at the mercy of whoever you sent it to. If you did not try with the Acer technical support in your area, you can try and see if they have any out of warranty options. The other option is to purchase the motherboard yourself and install it, the HDMI connections are part of it.

  • Ipad 1 and iOS5 find my iPad no longer working

Since upgrading to iOS5 my iPad 1 can't be found using "Find my iPad" via iCloud.
The find option is switched on in the settings panel, and location services are also on.
There's no problem with finding my location on the map though, so I don't think it has anything to do with the iPad itself, just how it's communicating with the outside world.
    Any ideas?

There is no legit way to go back at all.
People complain on these forums about each and every single software version ( no exceptions).  Most never have an issue of any sort.
Just as a hospital is full of sick people, this support forum is full of people with issues.  That certainly does not mean that most people are sick or that most have issues with software.

  • Set multi user column with PowerShell used to work in 2010 but no longer works in 2013

In SharePoint 2010 I used PowerShell to set the value of multi user people columns and it worked really well.  I attempt to use the same PowerShell to set the same column type in SharePoint 2013 and it fails.
here is the PowerShell that I use in 2010:
    $web = Get-SPWeb "http://intranet"
    $list = $web.lists["TestList"]
    $item = $list.items.add()
$item["Title"] = "Test multi user column"
    $users = @("Domain\user1", "Domain\user2")
    $userList = new-object Microsoft.SharePoint.SPFieldUserValueCollection
    foreach($user in $users)
    $spUser = $web.EnsureUser($user)
    $userValue = new-object Microsoft.SharePoint.SPFieldUserValue($web, $spUser.ID, $spUser.Name)
    $userList.Add($userValue)
    $item["MultiUserColumn"] = $userList
    $item.update()
I have used this on three SharePoint 2013 farms with differing results.  On two of them I receive an error when running $item.update(): Exception calling "Update" with "0" argument(s): "Invalid look-up value.  A look-up
field contains invalid data. Please check the value and try again."
If I take one of the users out of the $users list then it works fine, but it will not allow multiple users to be set with PowerShell.  I can use the GUI to add more than one user but not PowerShell.
Does anyone know if these methods have changed in 2013? I haven't been able to find anyone else with this issue.
    mmm... coffee...

Not sure but maybe something to do with casting. Below is the code snippet from one of the blogs. Try modifying your script like below and see if still you get the error

  • PSE 13 crashes whenever I try to save a file.  It worked last week and no longer works.  I tried trashing the preference file.  That didn't fix the problem.

I installed PSE 13 three weeks ago.  It worked well for a while, then started to crash whenever I tried to save a file for the web.  I trashed the preferences.  That didn't seem to help.  PSE 11 still works well on my Mac, so I think it's a software problem.  I also ran the permissions repair on Disk Utility. I have Yosemite on a MacBook Pro with 4 GB of RAM.

I've not used Keynote 5.3 in OS 10.7.5 in quite some time, but I do know that in more current OS versions there is a Saved Application State folder in the Username/Library folder which can get corrupted/ messed up when an application crashes. The User Library folder, as I recall, is hidden in the Finder, but accessible by pressing and holding the Option key while clicking on the Go menu in Finder.
"com.apple.Keynote.savedState" is the folder, or perhaps file, you want to find and delete- making sure Keynote is not open at that time, which if it can't start without crashing will not be a problem.
This is a "trick" I've used with other applications that got stuck in a loop of trying to restore a pre-crash state, and obviously couldn't start as that state led to the crash. I do not see that savedState file for Keynote on my 10.9 computer, but that is where I would look.
    Good luck!

  • Adapter that used to work with Gen 1 no longer works with Gen 6 nano

    Hi
    Here's my problem
I had nano gen 1 2Gb I had no use for (a gift) and now I I restore radios I git to use it to trasmit music via adapter I have bought 2 weeks ago, which plugs into the Apple interface slot and outputs USB and L/R audio.
    This one.
    http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-USB-Cable-Video-AV-TV-RCA-for-iPod-Mini-Touch-Nano-V ideo-Classic-/350684814012?pt=US_MP3_Player_Cables_Adapters&hash=item51a6719abc
It worked just fine with Gen 1.
Then someone alerted me to that recall program and it got exchanged for Gen 6 a week ago.
When I plugged the adapter in it displayed "unrecognized device" but as I was playing FM radio it worked.
Then I used iTunes (latest) to convert some CDs, downloaded them into the iPod, started playing.....it playes for a few second, then makes the "wrong answer" sound (you know, that "errrrrrrrrrr!") and then keeps playing, and this happens every few seconds.
I thought first my disk import went bad as my computer is old and slow.
So I first played the imported disks on my computer, which worked fine, and then I played the iPod with just phones, expecting to hear that "errrrrrrrrrrr!" - nope, playes fine.
Then I plugged in the adapter (I only plugged it into iPod, the other end stayed unplugged) - and there it came again.
So, somehow the adapter that worked finr with gen 1 is no longer good.
Had I known that I would never exchanged it - 2GB is plenty of space, and the chance of that battery going up in flames are small.
    Any ideas, anyone?
    Regards,
    Mike.
