Thunderbolt - What & How?

Hi guys!
Apologies in advance if I have posted this question in the wrong place, but I am after a little help/advice re Thunderbolt... I have just picked myself up a late-2012 MBP (Retina Display) that I really love, but am curious about (a) what Thunderbolt does/can do for me, and (b) what equipment I need to use the port?
As I said, apologies, and if I am in the wrong place, and you guys cant help, if you could point me in the right direction, I'd be very grateful!
Cheers...
Mark L.

almost every MacBook Pro can run an external display. Yours can probably run two, or if you do everything exactly right, three.
If you have never worked with external displays on Macs before, a feature called "Extended Desktop" is worth mentioning. This combines the built-in display with the external display along any edge of your choosing, extending the Desktop into a much larger workspace that spans the displays.
The mouse moves freely across this Extended Desktop, and can drag things, including windows. You can even park a window so that it is split across displays, and the parts of it will update "the right way" when scrolling. This is how you configure it once you plug in  a second display:

  • What/how to deliver multiple TOCs?

I'd like to use the first 'chapter/book' of my WebHelp (FH7) project as a Quick Start Guide and I think I can do it with a separate TOC.
I figured out how to do that part. But what I don't understand is, after I generate my project using the 2nd TOC, what/how do I deliver to the developers? They'll need both.

    Hi again
Indeed it does mean you will end up with two different help systems. The name may be the same because you will place them in different folders.
You may wish to think about creating a merged setup. Fortunately, fellow Adobe Community Expert Peter Grainge has some excellent information on his site about all that.

  • How to connect my MacBook to a monitor and TV at the same time? I have a thunderbolt, what else do I need?

I have an ASUS monitor and a SONY TV set. I have 2 HDMI cables, one for the TV and one for the monitor. I also have a Thunderbolt for my Mac and I have HDMI Pigtail Switch with 3 ports. For some reason when I connect the Pigtail Switch to the Thunderbolt and the 2 HDMIs to the Pigtail nothing happens. Anyone knows the answer?

Sounds like you're using a POP mail account.
You should get an IMAP account. such as the free one you get with iClourd.

  • New Thunderbolt drive, How, or Do I even need to tell Lightroom where the Library is?

I have learned, over time, to be very carful with Lightroom and now is no exception...
I copied all of my files, the complete library of photos, over to a new Thunderbolt hard drive. I then erased and renamed the old firewire drive and now use that for a backup.:
My question is: When I opened Lightroom it acted as if nothing had happened and all of the photos are showing. What is Lightroom doing? Is it using the old drive which is now a backup even though I renamed it? or, is Lightroom 5 so smart that it sees the new Thunderbolt drive and library and just decided on its own that 'this' is what is going to use?
I have no idea what is going on, but since it is day 1 I want to be sure Lightroom is using the correct library, not the backup.
Can someone help me determine that things are in place and working as they should?
    TIA,
    Ken

I apologize for having to ask so many questions. But what was the name of the old drive before you renamed it? Additionally, if you go to the library module and right-click on one of your images, one of the options in Windows is to "Show in Explorer" and on the Mac I assume it would be to "Show in Finder". If you click on that option it should open your system browser and show you the folder where that file is located. And at the top of that window you should be able to see the name of the drive and folder you are looking at.
The name of the old drive was "LaCie New 2TB" - I will now look at what comes up when I choose 'Show in finder' ( I'm on a Mac)
Okay, back here and what I found was right-clicking on one of the images brings up "“A32Z7813.CR2” could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?"
So, even though I have no question marks or exclamation marks, Lightroom does not see the original Library or Catalog (which one is it?) of original images.
So, I think the question is, How do I tell Lightroom to use the complete original files that are now on the new Thunderbolt drive?

  • HTC Thunderbolt: What the fudge?

Honestly Verizon—honestly? One day in March when I was on my way to the local Verizon Shoppe to buy an iPhone 4. I was looking around the store, intrigued by this new 4G LTE (which is the only thing I like about this phone) I started to talk to a salesmen about it who convinced me that this was "the phone to buy". Now after owning this phone for about 2 months now I can confidently say that having a HTC thunderbolt; proclaimed flagship 4G phone of Verizon wireless is worse than owning a dog with down's syndrome.
Now besides how thick and heavy this phone is there are just so many issues with it, the kick stand is rotting away, the battery life is lower than a limbo stick for mice, the screen is absolute crap and considering that it is an HTC sense phone we should have things like HTCsense.com at out disposal but no--big red decided to take the "Oh we could have good features that will make out customers happy but I'd rather just leave them out" rout. Who knew that someone could feel so much hatred for plastic? But what recently tipped the turtle on it's back was that my 4G/3G/1x will not even work anymore, I am paying a fee for unlimited data and it's not picking up anything it use to. What kind of fortune 500 company can get away with selling a heaping pile of poop to customers and advertise it as the latest and greatest technology?
Does anyone know if it's possible for me to go to my local Verizon store and trade this in for another 4G phone or an iPhone?

I get 6-7 hrs with the phone not shutting off or rebooting. Wouldn't u think they would feel bad. All these things after update that's officially recalled. I love my phone but I don't love what its done. It died one day after 2 - 3 hrs caught it rebooting 3-4 times.

  • Keeping an unlocked 3GS and new iPhone 5 on same iTunes, what/how can apps be shared if not using iCloud?

I have researched having two phones on the same account and keeping apps/music/contacts/etc.separate, but have not yet found a thread specific to NOT keeping everything separate but the same across phones; should be pretty simple, but simple sometimes isn't. Thanks in advance for your input!
My husband and I are electing to keep our 3GS' (unlocked) so when we travel internationally we can pop a sim in from the country we are in, mainly for data. (In one country we can get 500MB for 10 Euros versus the $25/100MB my carrier will charge with the iPhone 5.) At least that is what we hope...
    Couple questions:
    1. Once the cell number/service on the 3GS is transfered to the 5, the 3S will become basically an iPod touch until a new sim is in place, correct? We can still use wi-fi and the apps on the phone, and still be able to sync to iTunes, correct? iOS has been upgraded to 6.
1a. With a new Sim, any issue with losing any data/apps on the phone? I dont' think so.
    2. Once the 5 is activated on the new carrier, how do I share the apps within iTunes? Is it as easy as using iCloud (which we haven't "activated" yet) and/or plugging both phones into iTunes and transferring between devices (authorizing both)? Photos? There are photos on the 3S that we will need on the 5.
    3. Reverse order for new apps purchased (understand that not all the iphone 5 apps will work on the 3GS)?
    4. My husband also has a new iPad, any complications there with three devices? To date, he has not "shared" apps between his 3S and the iPad. He does not have iCloud set up, but plugs into his computer to backup and transfer photos.
Agian, thanks for your thoughts and any tips you can give me. Over the last three years with the 3GS, I have had to rebuild my phone twice and while most of the items were recovered, I am leery of throwing the 5 into the mix!

    1. Yes. without a sim it has no service, but all other features should be useable normally.
1.a Nope, Data and Apps are independent of the Sim.

Is it as easy as using iCloud (which we haven't "activated" yet) and/or plugging both phones into iTunes and transferring between devices (authorizing both)? Photos? 2. As long as both Phones use the same Apple ID, the applications can be synced to each through iTunes. Also any downloads on one phone should appear in the other. Again as long as both phones are using the same Apple ID.
    3. Reverse order for new apps purchased (understand that not all the iphone 5 apps will work on the 3GS)?
    3. If they can be run on the iPhone3GS they should be synced automatically.
    4. My husband also has a new iPad, any complications there with three devices? To date, he has not "shared" apps between his 3S and the iPad. He does not have iCloud set up, but plugs into his computer to backup and transfer photos.
    4. If all 3 Devices share the same Apple ID all should be synced.
As a word of warning, if all 3 devices use the same Apple ID, messages recieved using iMessage will appear on all 3 devices.
And Conctacts may get overwritten if synced to iCloud (thogh you say he doesn't have one), or merged together.

  • Rebuilding config server.  what/how to archive and restore?

    Greetings,
I've recently realized that I've gotta either re-jumpstart a server (because the root disk isn't mirrored, and because some other packages didn't get installed), or manually mirror the root disk (using SVM).
What I'm after here is info on what I need to archive, how to do that, and how to restore.
Details on the host: It's my primary master for my MMR setup, and is also the config server for when I set up other DS machines.
I'm guessing that I've got to archive off o=NetscapeRoot, and possibly the config stuff (but not necessarily the suffix, since it should be able to be initialized from one of my other masters, right?)
What tools are best used for this? Once the backup is made and the server is rebuilt, is it as simple as just restoring the archived trees? What tools are used for that?
    TIA,
    Patrick

    I should think:
    1) "tar" of everything under $LDAP_SERVER_ROOT, when both admin and ldap server are shutdown, make sure you check its content via "tar tvf ..." that all alias/*.db and all files under "db" are there.
    2) db2ldif for both NetscapeRoot and all userRoot(s) when both are down "ideally".
I have a cron job for this "db2ldif_backup.sh" which runs daily at 02:00 when both are "up".
    # db2ldif_backup.sh
    # Execute these for iPlanet Directory Server
    IDS5_PATH=/var/Sun/mps
    BASEDN="dc=example,dc=com"
    LDIF_FILE=/home/ldap/full_backup.ldif
    NETSCAPEROOT_LDIF_FILE=/home/ldap/NetscapeRoot.ldif
    if [ -n "`ps -ef | grep 'ns-slapd' | grep -v grep`" ]
    then
    YYYY=`date +'%Y'`
    cd $IDS5_PATH/slapd-`hostname`/ldif
    rm -f $YYYY*.ldif
    ../db2ldif -n UserRoot
    cp $YYYY*.ldif $LDIF_FILE
echo "Full user data backup written to $LDIF_FILE"
    rm -f $YYYY*.ldif
    ../db2ldif -n NetscapeRoot
    cp $YYYY*.ldif $NETSCAPEROOT_LDIF_FILE
echo "Netscape Config data backup written to $NETSCAPEROOT_LDIF_FILE"
    chmod 600 $NETSCAPEROOT_LDIF_FILE
    fi
Note: saveconfig and restoreconfig are doing the same for NetscapeRoot.

  • Dictionary structure, what, how?

    Hello to all,
I need to program to load a dictionary from a file that contains the words and it's definitions, I need to load it in a efficient structure because when it will be loaded will be used to do search's in that dictionary, for example:
    Dictionary file:
    a
    and
    another
    etc
    hell
    hellsinki
    hello
And I need an structure that permit to me search in that dictionary very fast and to do search's like this:
    search: he*
    and result must be
    hell
    hellsinki
    hello
    search: *llo
    result:
    hello
    search: ll
    result:
    hellsinki
    hell
    hello
do you know (what structure will be convenient to do this) how can I do this efficiently?
    Thanks to all for reading!

    I'd use a http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/docs/api/java/util/PropertyResourceBundle.html for the data.
For the search optimization, you can set up a "search" map where the keys are all possible substrings (of two or more lettters?) of your words and the values are a collection with all the words where the key occurs.
    eg.
key: "he", value: a collection containing "hell", "hellsinki" (sic), "hello", "another".
    etc.
That shifts the processing to setting up the "search" map rather than searching though all words for each search.

  • What / How determines when a purchasing condition (Example SKT0) is used

Am trying to find the reasoning behind when a purchasing condition is used. Example SKT0 does not impact the FI document created at GR but it does for IR.
    Thanks

What I am trying to understand is under what circumsatnces trigger a condition is taken into account. The example I am tracing is SKT0 but there are others. When you post a goods receipt the discount is not taken into account when generating the FI posting. This is correct but how did the GR process know to ignore that condition? Is there an SAP function I can see to understand.

  • What & how do we use MR11 as part of month end closing

Pls advice the use & how do we run MR11 .
    thks

The MR11 transaction deals with quantity issues.  Itu2019s the quantity of GRu2019s and IRu2019s that drive this transaction.  Both Valuated and Non-Valuated POu2019s are included in the reports.
You need a report that will list all of your POu2019s and show the total number of GRu2019s entered compared to the number of IRu2019s entered.
q     If the goods/services have been received and a GR was entered but no invoice has been processed yet, you will see it in the report generated by MR11.
o     This is particularly important when the GR entered is very old.  We are at the fiscal year closing.  By running this transaction looking specifically for this situation, if there are any, you will see them in your report.
q     If an invoice has been entered against one of your POu2019s before you had time to get the good/service verified and the GR entered, you will see it in the report generated by MR11.
o     This is particularly important when the IR entered is very old.  We are at the fiscal year closing.  By running this transaction looking specifically for this situation, if there are any, you will see them in your report.
q     If a PO has an unusually large discrepancy between the total GRu2019s and IRu2019s, you will see this while reviewing the MR11.
A discrepancy (quantity) occurred between Goods Receipt (GR) and Invoice Receipt (IR). MR11 deals with quantity differences, not dollars.
This needs to be cleared. Examples of situations where this occurs are:
q     If the goods have been received, the vendor hasnu2019t invoiced for the goods and wonu2019t be invoicing (the vendor has gone out of business). Use MR11
o     Remember the GR/IR account is a clearing account allowing you to post an expense when you receive a good/service.  Paying for that good/service offsets the GR.  If the vendor doesnu2019t invoice, that GR will never go away.  Of course, we get the free goods!!
q     An invoice with reference to a Purchase Order was paid through accounts payable FI (as a direct) instead of procurement. Use MR11
q     The goods were received and sent back to the vendor for poor quality. The vendor was accidentally paid and we will not be reimbursed due to bankruptcy of the vendor.  Use MR11
q     Please Note:  These are examples of the kinds of situations that may require the use of MR11 to make a correction to the PO.  This should only be done after other options for correcting PO issues have proven unsuccessful.  Using this transaction should only be done at the request of IES & Comptrollersu2019.
q     Quantity ordered = 100 ea. at a unit price of $1.00, receive quantity of 97 ea. at a unit price of $1.00.  If the remaining balance of 3 ea. will not be shipped, purchaser needs to reduce the open quantity on the purchase order to reflect the actual amount received.  DO NOT Use MR11
o     The point here is that the PO should reflect the activity of what happened as closely as possible. At 97, for all practical purposes, the PO has been completely satisfied.
o     By reducing the line item to 97 total, a GR for the last 3 items can not be accidentally done.
o     Reducing the line item to 97 leave a good audit trail for any audits that may be done at a later date.
Maintenance of the GR/IR Clearing account should be done regularly. Itu2019s recommended to be done weekly for both IR surplus and GR surplus. Run IR surplus with movement up to today. For GR (delivery) surplus, run maintenance with movement one or two months old.

  • W540 with Apple 27" Thunderbolt display - how to control brightness?

    Hi everyone-
I have a colleague's hand-me-down 27" Apple Thunderbolt display that I wanted to try to run on my W540, which runs Win7 x64 Enterprise.
I connect to the notebook port (do not see this port on my dock) and basic display appears.
I cannot control the brightness and the display is at a dim default level.
I tried two general online recipes to fix this situation - 1) installing Bootcamp services [1] and using the control panel and 2) installing a BrightnessController windows program [2] that is supposed to talk directly over the Thunderbolt device connection.
I could not get either one to work - Bootcamp services did not show a Brightness tab (it has that capability if the stars align) and the BrightnessController app said it could never detect the display device.  I uninstalled the Bootcamp sevices to try to allow this app "exclusive" access to Thunderbolt devices, but it didn't make any difference.
The only other pieces of data I have are:
    - in the Intel Graphics control panel app, it recognizes the display as a "Thunderbolt display".  I can play around with some color balance settings, but these don't seem to be talking natively to the display (increasing brightness results in terrible washout of colors)
    - in Windows Device Manager, my display appears as a "Generic PnP" monitor.   I've never seen it described as something Apple-specific (maybe due to no specific Windows driver for it - even after Bootcamp services install)
I've read bits and pieces of Thunderbolt display issues on Lenovo forums, but nothing seemed to match my question for native hardware brightness control.
Does anyone have any useful inputs - success stories, ideas for things to try?
    Thanks!

Also! Just tried installing the "Intel Thunderbolt Software" that was available from Lenovo System Update (did not see that before) - once installed, I could use the Brightness Controller app [1]

  • What & How Can I Delete From My L515

I have the Satellite L515-S4925 Laptop.  I'm strictly using this laptop for DJing.  So, there are a lot of pre-loaded programs that I will never use.  I want to delete some of these programs, but past experiences have taught me that deleting some programs will effect other programs, or cause the computer to not work properly.  I thought of asking tech support, but I thought I ask here first.  Which programs can I delete safely?  And, can I delete them just using the Add/Uninstall Program through the Control Panel?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

You would be surprised how many people literally delete programs instead of uninstalling them.  I have adopted the policy on forums to take a person at their word.  If they say they deleted a program I procede under that impression.  I figure anyone smart enough to uninstall a program should be intelligent enough to say that is what they did rather than say they deleted it.  I gave up trying to second guess or read anything into posts.
The complete specs for your system can be found on the UK Support Site here.  The list of what programs are installed are about 2/3's of the way down.
And yes, I said that one should NOT uninstall the Toshiba programs as it tends to cause problems doing so.  The only Toshiba labeled programs that can safely be uninstalled are the Toshiba DVD Player as long as you install a different DVD player program or you don't intend to watch DVDs, the Toshiba Disk Creator if you install a different burner program or don't intend to burn any DVDs or CDs, and the Toshiba Service Station which doesn't tend to work correctly anyway.
The rest of the Toshiba programs are UTILITIES rather than applications and tend to cause problems when they are uninstalled.  If one does a clean install of Windows from an actual Windows Install Disk (rather than using the recovery process to restore the system) they normally don't have a problem if they don't install all of them, but once they have been installed it's normally better to leave them installed.
Personally I like my system running properly.  I don't obsess over trivial system processes running in the background and use inconsequential amounts of ram or disk space.  I've found over the years (and I'm talking as someone whose computer usage goes back to the mid 1970's) that it's better to have a system run stable and allow me to get things done.  I don't want to spend all of my time tweaking it and then fighting it when it acts up.
If you don't post your COMPLETE model number it's very difficult to assist you. Please try to post in complete sentences with punctuation, capitals, and correct spelling. Toshiba does NOT provide any direct support in these forums. All support is User to User in their spare time.

  • XP, Vista, where, what, how, how much--your help appreciated......

New Mac Book Pro owner here. I will be starting a course of study in a month that requires Windows, to run its program. I left the Windows platform three years ago and have been very happy without it. However, now that it's a requirement, I have some questions.
    1) After reading here on this forum a lot lately, I've decided to go with XP Pro with SP2 or SP3. Is there a difference that would matter between the sp2 and sp3?
    2) 32 or 64-bit? I don't know enough to really know what this means, much less make a wise choice. Does it matter? My machine has 4 Gb Ram.
    3) After installing Windows using Bootcamp, do I need to install its own browser (Firefox) on that partition? Or will it access the one I have? I know these questions must sound so stupid, but I don't know anything about this.
    4) With windows installed using bootcamp, and let's say I'm at that course working online with Windows, will i be able to do anything, just as if it's a PC? Will I be able to work on things, create a document? Will I need additional programs for this?
    5) Will I install a virus protection to the Windows part of the disk?
    Thanks everybody.

Applications are not "cross platform" meaning you can't run Windows programs outside Windows, and likewise, you can't run OS X programs except inside OS X.
Side by side or inside OS X means you don't need to reboot to work in the other OS. CAD and graphic or cpu intensive programs aren't good candidates for virtual OS.
Personally, I would have bought a PC for Windows. There isn't much OS X and Vista don't both do well today, and a Core i7 based system is a powerful platform (but not in laptop yet).
Mac OS X users find David Pogue's books a great reference manual and helpful. My brother switched over and appreciated it a lot. He also writes books on other topics.
