Welcome to Apple Discussions!
1. If your data is backed up, just restore your backup.
2. If your data is not backed up, wait a half hour to see if there is a change. If you have another Mac, see if you can see your data and restore it with Target Disk Mode desctibed below:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58583
You may also be able to restore your system back to normal simply by zapping the PRAM:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=2238
If you are unable to restore either way, purchase a Firewire external hard drive at least as large as your internal drive, and Prosoft Data Rescue or Subrosasoft Filesalvage on CD. Boot from one of them with the startup manager:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106178
And attempt to restore your data to the external hard drive.
Let us know where you stand after that, which steps you took, and we can tell you the next step.

Hi, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
Try booting into Safe Mode. This will take quite awhile longer than a normal startup because it does a file check and repair of the hard disk.
If this works you will see your normal desktop. Once completely started up in Safe Mode, try to restart normally, and go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility. Click on the top hard drive icon in the left sidebar and note the S.M.A.R.T. status at the bottom right of the pane. What does it say?
Select the named boot volume in the left sidebar, ("Macintosh HD" unless you've renamed it). What is the hard drive capacity and how much space remains available on it? Repair permissions on it.
See if you are able to do a little hard drive maintenance to help things out. If Safe Mode doesn't work for you, post back and we will explore other options.

  • Operating system won't load

I'm using an iMac with Tiger, and about an hour ago my Safari shut down and wouldn't reopen, nor would any of my other programs. So I shut it dwn, and when I try to turn it back on, it gets to the screen where it says Mac OS X and would normally load and go to profile select, but doesn't load. What's wrong with it?

is it possible to redownload that stuff without paying as long as you have the account information?
Nope. When you signed the agreement, it was pointed out that it is your responsibility to backup everything.
You might be able to recover it with Prosoft Data Rescue and a Firewire external hard drive of at least the same size as your existing hard drive, or if you have another Mac, to use Target Disk Mode to see if the drive is visible from that other Mac.
    http://www.prosofteng.com/ makes Data Rescue
Target Disk Mode is explained here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58583
If your Mac is invisible using Target Disk Mode, then you have to use a data recovery software.

There are three possible solutions to solve the situation:
    1) Install a processor supported by the current BIOS Version to be able to properly turn on your system and then update the BIOS to the latest Version to be able to use your E8400/E0 (update should be done from DOS only).
    2) Ask in a local computer shop or contact your reseller to do the same thing for you.
    3) Connect an internal floppy drive and a PS/2 Keyboard and then try to force the system into AMI BIOS Recovery Mode.  Instructions:
    Quote
Rename the desired AMI BIOS file to AMIBOOT.ROM and save it on a floppy disk. e.g. Rename A7345IMS.1xx to AMIBOOT.ROM
Insert this floppy disk in the floppy drive. Turn On the system and press and hold Ctrl-Home to force update. It will read the AMIBOOT.ROM file and recover the BIOS from the A drive.
When 4 beeps are heard you may remove the floppy disk and restart the computer.
Even though the AMI BIOS Recovery Procedure is the only chance you have to solve the situation without installing a different processor, it does not work in all cases.  However, as it is an easy procedure, it is at least worth a try.

  • How can I backup my iMac with a Tiger operating system?

I have an iMac with a Tiger operating system (10.4.11). I am intending to upgrade to Snow Leopard. When I spoke to an Apple representative, he said I should back up my computer before I upgraded to Leopard and then Snow Leopard as I could lose everything during the upgrade. This version of operating system (Tiger) does not have Time Machine. Can anyone tell me how I can back up everything before I do the upgrade?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
The best option is to use a third-party app. I recommend you to use Carbon Copy Cloner, but you can have a look for more applications.
You should keep all your files and applications after upgrading, but you should have a backup. Also, I think you should be able to upgrade to Snow Leopard directly without upgrading to Leopard

    Hi,
Not sure if any of you above have managed to solve your problem or not but after coming across this same problem myself today as I am currently 'sofa bound' I decided to make it my mission to find a way around it.
Initially I did think, having ready what seemed like a million questions and people with the same problem, that the only way was to buy OS X 10.5 ... HOWEVER, no. In among all these threads I found a jewel - Download I Tunes 9.2.1 which gets rid of the download itunes 10 advert and allows you to then buy from itunes again :-)  I am now one very happy lady.
I apologise to all those that dont have older versions of OS X that maybe wont support even this upgrade but certainly for those like me with just 4yr old lap tops at least it means it not longer means buying a new one.
Hope this helps son very frustrated people like myself - so much for apple support!

Try starting up with your Snow Leopard DVD and see if the disk can be repaired. Once you are at the installer screen go to the Utilities Menu and choose Disk Utility and choose repair disk. You might also want to try Diskwarrior.
    Hope this helps.

  • Operating system does not load up?

When I turn my mac (2009) on it shows the grey loading screen but does not load up the operating system?

Put your install DVD into the optical drive (CD/DVD drive) and reboot. Be sure to either use the disc that came with your Mac, or, if you installed a later Mac OS X version from disc, use the newer disc. As soon as you hear the boot chime, hold down the "c" key on your keyboard (or the Option Key until the Install Disk shows up) until the apple shows up. That will force your MacBook to boot from the install DVD in the optical drive.
When it does start up, you'll see a panel asking you to choose your language. Choose your language and press the Return key on your keyboard once. It will then present you with an Installation window. Completely ignore this window and click on Utilities in the top menu and scroll down to Disk Utility and click it. When it comes up is your Hard Drive in the list on the left?
If it is, then click on the Mac OS partition of your hard drive in the left hand list. Then select the First Aid Tab and run Repair Disk. The Repair Disk button won't be available until you've clicked on the Mac OS partition on your hard drive. If that repairs any problems run it again until the green OK appears and then run Repair Permissions. After repairing use Startup Disk from the same menu to choose your hard drive for restarting from your hard drive.
If your hard drive isn’t recognized in Disk Utility then your hard drive is probably dead.

  • Help system won't load

Lately, I haven't been able to access the Mac OS X system help. I'm running 10.3.9 (just reinstalled and re-updated, etc.) and when I try to run Help, it starts to come up and then just goes away.... won't load.
    Ideas, suggestions welcome.
    Thanks, Daniel

This is a common bug in Panther. The solution to this problem is simple though:
    • (~ means your home directory)
Go to ~/Library/Preferences and delete the following files......
    com.apple.help.plist
com.apple.helpui.plist (you may or may not have this one).
    com.apple.helpviewer.plist
Next go to ~/Library/Caches and delete the folder......
    com.apple.helpui
Log out and log in. If the problem is gone, empty the trash. If not, put everything back.

  • Windows 8: Choose An Operating System Won't Go Away

Hi. The Choose an operating system prompt when I boot won't go away, even if I've set it to just go into Windows 8 (the other is Ultimate Windows 7). I've also checked the start up in the control panels, it's on Windows 8. Is there a more advanced way to get rid of this prompt and just let it go into Windows 8?
Thank you in advance. Have a great sunday mass/great weekend.
    God bless,
    Alvin

    yup
once you're in windows hit the follow keys to bring up the system information window
    command + fn + esc
choose 'advanced system setttings' in the left hand column to launch the 'system properties' window
by default it will be on the 'advanced' tab..  which is good!
hit the 'settings' button in the 'Start-up and Recovery' section to option up the startup options window
I think 'Time to display recovery options' might be ticked in your case.. so untick that and hit ok..
if this still don't work.. untick the 'time to display list of operating systems' as well.

  • System won't load after startup repair - Satellite A500

    Hi guys,
I've got a problem with my laptop. I shut down my laptop directly by switching off from the switch. After I start the laptop the system recommends startup repair but it was unable to repair and after that it just went up to the welcome page and it won't load anymore.
Do anyone have any idea what is the problem?
    Thank you

    hi plioe,
can you run chkdsk on the hdd?
do you hear unusual sounds from the harddisk?
it seems that your harddisk has some problems...
this causes a slow startup or failure to boot...
but to be sure a recovery is recomended in some cases the software configuration went bad...

  • New operating system won't support re-installation of HP Officejet 6500A Plus

I updated my iMac to OS X9, Maverick -- I am unable to print, told that the operating system will not support the printer -- told to reinstall software, new Mac operating system not listed, told that if system not listed, will not be able to install printer software from HP Installer but may be able to install another way -- please let me know if there is another way -- Thank you

    Hi rhd1884,
I understand you're looking for a way to install your Officejet 6500A Plus printer on your new Mavericks operating system. I'd be happy to help you with this.
There definitely is another way to install the printer. It can be done using the Apple software. To give you the right instructions, I just need to know if the printer is connected via a USB cable or is it wireless?
Once I know the connection type, I can give you the proper instructions!

When restoring your iPad from itunes I am getting a message that the "firmware" will not transfer.  What is firmware and is this important?

    Hi LAFMORE,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
The message that you're seeing when restoring your iPad is unexpected. You can use the steps in this article to troubleshoot the behavior and restore your iPad:

  • System won't load from startup

Nothing happens past the diagnostics part of startup. Screen shows "windows did not start properly last time" message and gives options. None work and when the countdown finishes to "load windows normally", system freezes.
The recovery disc supplied only allows hard drive to be formatted and reinstalled but I have all my music, photos and other work, including important emails, on the laptop and haven't got a back up.
How can I start windows from a CD so I can take off my docs onto an external hardrive before formatting? PLEASE HELP!!!

    Hi Julian,
Your simplest option would be to remove the hard drive from your notebook and install it into a USB caddy which you could then attach to another PC and copy off your data. You could then just reformat/reinstall your system using the recovery CDs.
If you have access to a genuine Microsoft installation CD then you could try to boot from that and try to repair your existing OS but I don't think you would be able to copy your data using that technique.
Finally you could use a bootable CD from one of the commercial backup/restore utilities (such as Norton Ghost, or Acronis True Image) and try to offload your data to an external medium using that utility.
