Time Capsule + 2Wire 1701 HG Gateway DSL Modem/Router

I'm posting this note in that hopes that maybe some lost soul will stumble across it and take heart. Some things do indeed "Just Work," but it might take 10 or 15 person-hours to reach that state.
This was Trouble with a capital T.
It took me about a week, the ISP tech support people a couple of hours in two phone sessions, and finally Apple Support about a half hour to get it running.
The first two times I tried to set it up (even though I'm kind of an RTFM kind of guy) the Time Capsule and I managed to completely bring down my network and to disable the modem all the way to hard reset.
The third time, I got Apple Support to talk me through it, and now it's happily munching away, backing up my main drive.
The root problem, according to Apple support, was that the 2wire is a combined modem/router, so that, unless the guy at the keyboard pays very close attention to the step descriptions and understands all the subtleties, he can get both 2wire and TC trying to assign addresses on the network and really screw things up.
The Apple-phone-support-prescribed sequence that ultimately worked was shutting down everything attached to the modem then restarting in order, modem, TC, finally MacBook. During the re-setup process the 2wire website somehow detected the need for a modem firmware upgrade and offered to download and install it.
Finally the TC's green light came on, and everything seems to be working to spec.
Now I'm a happy guy, but there's no possible way I could have gotten that out of a manual, and if it hadn't been for Apple's willingness to provide human phone support, the TC would have been on it's way to the dump. Well ok, I would have waited 'til the next E-waste day. Apple support gets point for running a down home blues on their 'hold' track.
Hope this helps someone,
rj

This 2Wire modem/router has been nothing short of a pain in my nether region.
Is it possible to disable the 2Wire's router capabilities and use only the Time Capsule's router capabilities?
I'm going to give your suggestions a shot. Keeping my fingers crossed.

  • Time Capsule won't connect to Arris Modem?

I'm trying to connect my Time Capsule to an Arris Touchstone Telephony Modem. The modem works with my gf's Belkin router, and I can plug directly into the modem and get Internet access, but my Time Capsule will not work with the modem. The green light comes on, the signal is broadcast, all wireless devices in the house connect to the signal, but nothing connects to the Internet. I've tried the turn the modem off (and take out the battery) trick a dozen times with no luck. Any ideas on what to try next? The two just don't like each other.

Leave the modem off overnight.. with the cable disconnected. But you often need the modem off at least 15min for the dhcp at the ISP to reset. Try for increasingly long times..
You can also ring the ISP and ask them to reset the port because you have changed the router.. they should be prepared to help... Make sure the TC is the only thing connected.
I am presuming the Arris is only a modem without a router in it.
There are other tricks we use to get this working but the TC has such a limited setup presented to the end user there is nothing else you can do.
Just make sure the TC is set to dhcp on the ethernet WAN setup.. and has the connectivity leds come on when you plug it in.
Otherwise bridge the TC and use it plugged into the belkin.

I now wish to add a second Airport extreme but am considering a hard wire connection with 100 ft of cat 6 cable from the Time capsule to the second Airport extreme.
    Excellent plan.
Can my network operate properly to extend the network with both a wireless and wired extend functionallity?
Yes, but don't get confused about the second AirPort Extreme, as it would not be configured to "extend" a wireless network.....it would be configured to "create a wireless network" using the same wireless network name, security settings and password as the Time Capsule network. Configure the second Extreme in Bridge Mode.
This Apple support document will show you how to hookup and configure the second AirPort Extreme:

  • Does Timecapsule work with the new xfinity wireless gateway 1 modem / router?

My husband hooked up the new xfinity wireless gateway 1 modem / router today and now I can't access my Timecapsule to back up my Mac. Comcast has not been able to help me...and they can't get me back on our old Comcast modem so I can access my Timecapsule, which has worked fine for several years. Can anyone offer a solution?

Thanks for the suggestion. I have no idea why but all of a sudden the Time Capsule backed up my Mac before I had time to do as you suggested...although the back up process was very slow. I'll see if it gets faster over the next few days...will resort to your suggestion if needed. Thanks again!

  • Can I use the Airport Time Capsule Wirelessly without being connected to my router/mac by ethernet?

    Hey
I've recently bought a 3TB Airport Time Capsule, with the sole intention of being able to perform wireless backups.
Is it possible to perform these wireless backups without being connected by ethernet to my modem/existing router?  I don't want to use the time capsule as a replacement for my existing router (at this stage) - just for wireless backups of my Macs.
If this is not possible, or practicable, are there other alternatives that I should explore? (non-cloud)
    Thanks in advance
    Steven
    PS
    Boring background:
I'm in a rental property with a woefully inadequate number of plugs in practical places. In addition there is only one phone socket. The result being insufficient safe space to have the existing router, and the Airport TC along with the existing electrical items.

Unfortunately, Apple designed the Time Capsule to connect to a modem or modem/router using an Ethernet connection.
If you do this, you do have the option of turning off the wireless on the Time Capsule and using your existing wireless for backups. Backups will be automatic this way, in the background. The Time Capsule could be located anywhere an Ethernet cable will reach.....up to 300+ feet or about 100 meters.
The other option.....not recommended and not convenient at all.....is to set up the Time Capsule......without an Ethernet connection and then have the Time Capsule provide a wireless network that would not have Internet access.
So, when you wanted to back up, you would have to manually "switch" to the Time Capsule network for that process, then once the backup was done, manually "switch" back again to your normal wireless network for normal operations.  A real mess, not to mention the possibility of wireless interference between the networks that may create other issues.

  • Airport Expess with DSL Modem Router

I had a DSL Modem Router with 3 computers plugged into it via ethernet and was working fine. I then replaced one of my computers with a laptop so bought an AE and plugged it into an ethernet port on the DSL modem router. It worked fine for about 4 days then all three computers internet connections went down. I have got the two desktops working again with the AE disconnected but am worried that if i connect the AE again the same thing will happen. Is there any way that i can avoid this from happening? is this because i am doubling up the routing if you know what i mean?

    First welcome to the discussions,
This isn't that uncommon, many of us expieriance drops in service and have to reset our systems.
There could be any number of reasons that cause this from a Power Spike to surges from power company, to storms from wind and lighting.
If you are lucky nothing gets fried and a simple reset will take care of the problem. Other times it can fry about any component and sometimes it's hard to find exqactly what is fried. If you are able to reset and get everything up and running again I wouldn't worry to much, I would consider a Battery Back-up to add to your Network to save your equipment though.
    Cheers and Good Luck.

  • Time Capsule does not play nicely with Cisco Router

Three days ago, I had an older Linksys router attached to our ISP's cable modem by ethernet; the network included a wireless time capsule and apple express base station set up by our son last year (who understands this stuff, but lives 2,000 miles distant).  The router died and I purchased a new Linksys router (E2500).  It is occupying the same spot as the old router, but running with no security settings as yet.  My wife's iMac and two Windows XP laptops work just fine on the network, as well as our NetFlix connection on our TV.  My MacPro, however, can not access the main network - it can see it but won't grab an IP address.  It will, however, see and connect to the router's guest account, although with reduced signal strength.  The Time Capsule is now connected to the MacPro by ethernet (if I make it wireless, it will back up fine, but I can't access Internet or send email on the guest account).  The AirPort Express is unplugged and not a factor.
Yesterday, I spent most of the day on the phone with Cisco (who claimed AirPort Express will not work with their routers, which I know to be, um, less than accurate), and with Apple Support - who did not help (other than to set up a Genius Bar appointment this morning at the local Apple Store).  The Genius Bar turned out to be a disappointment as well - the MacPro with Time Capsule attached worked perfectly on the main network in the store, but at home, even with a test user account with Admin authority, as they suggested), no go.
If I unpower Time Capsule, I loose Internet.  With Time Capsule plugged in, I can access my router's guest account -
Aside from returning this router and starting fresh with a different brand router, any suggestions?
Thanks for any guidance, suggestions, etc.

My first reaction is to suggest you ring your son.. !!
And I guess my second one, would be to remove the E2500, and connect the time capsule directly to the cable modem.. they are equivalent devices. The TC is an excellent wireless router and will work better as the primary router in your network. Turn off the cable modem so it can pick up the new device.. plug the TC directly to the cable modem then turn on both.
Make sure the TC is working as router.. and you should be able to setup the wireless to connect all your computers etc.
The E2500 can also be used as a WAP if you need more range. But be aware you have to make sure it uses a separate channel to the TC. Plug it in via ethernet to LAN port not WAN.. and turn off dhcp and set the IP to same IP range as the TC but make it outside the dhcp scope. So for example the TC is running 10.0.1.1 and then make the E2500 10.0.1.254
The express cannot do WDS to the Linksys.. so what you were told is correct. It may be able to connect via ethernet but not as repeater. But you can do that with the TC now that it is the main router.

  • Will a time capsule work connected to a Sky wireless router, or should time capsule replace the Sky wireless router

I cant work out whether I should connect my new time capsule to my existing Sky wireless boadbannd router, or does the time capsule kit replace my Sky
router .I would really appreciate a none technical answer to my dilema before I open the box.

It depends on what the sky router exactly is..
If it is a modem, then you definitely have to keep it.. is it satellite or some sort of wireless internet??
If it is a router that plugs into an existing modem then in all  likelihood the TC can replace it.
If the sky router can be bridged then the sky router can be kept but the TC work as the router.
And finally even if the sky router is locked and you cannot do anything.. the TC can still work as a bridged device to provide backup and wireless connection within your network.
So however the situation it is possible to use your TC.

  • DSL Modem / Router for Airport Extreme / Express

Please can anyone advise re the best DSL Modem / Router to use with an Airport Extreme and Express.
I am in the UK with BT Broadband. I currently have a Netgear DG834G which has been great but seems to need a lot of re-setting recently and has been dropping the connection. I've checked our line with the provider and that seems to be OK. The Netgear DG834G is currently wired via CAT5 to my Airport Extreme which is then also wired to an Airport Express to extend the network.
We are in a rural area so don't have particularly fast Broadband speeds (max tends to be around 4MBps).
As I'm using the Airport Express / Airport Extreme for my WiFi I don't necessarily need a modem / router with wireless or anything that has bells and whistles or can make me a decaf macchiato...I just want something this is bomb-proof and super reliable.
I've looked at various forums and am just getting confusing stuff re what works and what doesn't.
We are due to get fibre-broadband in our area next year - very happy to have to get a new router then for that if needed. The important thing for me is to have a decent set-up for now.
    Many thanks! Eddy
Using Macbook Pro and iMac on 10.9.5

You don't need a modem/router since the AirPort Extreme is a router.
I don't know what the best modem might be....that would involve testing hundreds of products, and even if we could come up with a "best" modem for the AirPorts, it would likely not be the "best" working the BT connection, or BT would not support the product......,but you might want to take a look at the Draytek Vigor 120 modem, and then check with both the Draytek support folks and the BT support folks to make sure that the modem will be compatible with your service.
Vigor 120 ADSL Modem - Draytek
If you are due to get a fibre connection in the future, then you will have to start over again modem wise at that time.

  • Can I use time capsule as nas attached to another wireless router?

my 4 year old time capsule was starting to drop it's connection to the internet intermittently.  so I decided to buy a new linksys ea4500 and that's now setup as my main wireless router.  can I still salvage my time capsule by attaching it to the new linksys router, using ethernet cable, and using it as a NAS drive?  my purpose is to continue using the time capsule as a NAS hdd for time machine backups.
I read somewhere that the time capsule cannot be set up in client mode, so does this mean I can't attach it to non-apple wireless routers?
thanks in advance to anyone who helps

You can connect the Time Capsule using an Ethernet cable to any router that you want. The key is to configure the Time Capsule in Bridge Mode.
Here is an example from a recent post a few minutes ago using a 2-Wire router:

  • How to setup wireless time capsule with 3rd party external HDD and router?

    Topic says it all really...
I've got a linksys router and an iomega external hard drive.
I want to have wireless time capsule setup but i don't really wanna shell out for an apple time capsule when I have a perfectly working router and hard drive...
Can it be done? would I be better off buying an airport express/extreme?
    cheers

    Welcome, jackbyo!
    I've got a linksys router
    Good product
    iomega external hard drive.
    1) The drive must be formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) to work with Time Machine.
    2) The drive will need to be connected directly to your Mac via USB or FireWire connection.
    Can it be done?
    As above
would I be better off buying an airport express/extreme
The AirPort Express will not support a hard drive.
Time Machine backups to a drive at the USB port of the AirPort Extreme are not supported by Apple due to corruption issues.

  • WiFi Problems w/ OS X 10.4.11 and Speedport W 502V DSL Modem/Router

We just moved to Germany again, so went to Deutsche Telekom (DT) for Internet/phone access. They sold us a Speedport W 502V DSL Modem/Router with manuals--all in German, as DT does (DT offers NO support in English; some would argue they offer no customer support at all).
Babelfish and I managed to configure a late-model eMac, G4 PowerBook and two iPhones with the DSL router, with pretty good success (sometimes we have intermittent Internet connectivity). Then our household goods were delivered and we unpacked and set up the G4 dual-GHz tower. So...the G4's Airport (not Airport Extreme) "sees" the WLAN and the https://speedport.ip site "sees" the IP address of the G4, but the G4 can't join the network, no matter what I try. It's to the point that I think it's something painfully obvious that I'm missing and I must be too far in the weeds...so now I need fresh eyes on the problem.
I have no computer connected to the Speedport, and wouldn't have thought that was the problem because the other non-physically-connected computers are using the WLAN network. Thanks for any help!

    hi kathryn
did it have to be the Telekom, by all means??
anyway, first of all a link to a video where a german comedian writes a letter to steve jobs demanding he chose any carrier but the DTAG for the iPhone distribution in germany - really funny!
    http://bit.ly/4B4OdQ
OK, I´m currently downloading the speedport manual from their website and will look through it, in order to see if there´s something in there..
as a first guess I´d try looking at the wireless prefs of that speedport box. I guess it supports by default 802.11a/b/g, whereas the G4 only does 802.11b (the "normal" airport). Try selecting only the 802.11b portion from the speedport (that makes networking somewhat slower for airport express computers, but shoudn´t be a problem since it´s still at least as fast as basic DSL service (11MBit vs 2 or 6 MBit)
    cheers

You've posted to the iPhone forum rather than the Time Capsule forum, but to save you some time, you can either replace your D-Link with it since it is a wireless N router, or you can set it up on your LAN as an additional wifi router with its own unique SSID.  If you do the latter, be sure to connect your mac to the Time Capsule rather than your D-Link so it will support your Time Machine backups.

  • Best DSL modem/router?

I'm sure this question has been asked but how recently, I wouldn't know. We have a D-Link DSL modem/router sent to us by Verizon in 2010. My desktop Mac is connected via Ethernet to the modem. Our other devices use Internet via WiFi. Verizon can sell us a new basic modem, of course. But I'd like one that has a stronger WiFi signal. Can anyone suggest a specific brand and model that will work with our DSL and emit a stronger signal? Thank you!

  • Can Westell 327W DSL modem/router receive wireless signal?

I have a spare Westell 327W wired/wireless DSL modem/router. I need a wireless access point for a G4 Power Mac away from an Apple Extreme. I knew how to make the Westell 327W in a bridge mode. Is there a way to make 327W communicate wirelessly with a FIOs modem/router?
    Thank you very much.

Hmmm, perhaps something like this with a USB extension cord would be a solution, they have better Range even without an extension than Airport cards ime...
