Time capsule as samba server?

Can I ever use time capsule as a media server? I bought the 3terra time capsule without thinking that could not be a media server at this price.Shoul I give it back? Or wait until you will make it to run as a media server?

It is not and never will be a media server. Apple have locked up the firmware tighter than a drum.. and the TC itself has totally avoided hacking for this long I kind of doubt you are going to suddenly get Apple TV type invasion of xmbc etc.
The TC will not function at all well in the role even if it were possible. It is a backup device that is itself difficult to backup. Storing media is a bad idea on a device like the TC without having some built in rsync type backup function.
If it is not what you want and you still have right of return.. then return it. Most NAS you buy from the big names, QNAP, Synology, Netgear will have Time Machine extensions plus various media players on board.
You can play media from the TC but only as a file store .. not as the server. Eg a WD live will play media from the TC no issues.. It is the WD live of course that is the media player. So TC is just a network hard disk.
If you are using a windows network.. with no Mac's in sight.. TC is the wrong product for sure. It is brilliant for Mac with Time Machine.. although the 3TB is overpriced IMHO.. the 2TB is much better value.

  • Time Capsule as Samba Server + Xbox 360?

    I'm trying to connect a my xbox 360 or PS3 to my time capsule so I can dump my podcasts onto my time capsule and then stream them to my TV (without buying an AppleTV... or Mac Mini, which is what I really want). I seem to understand I can connect my 360 to a Samba server, and that the TC can be a samba server, but I can't seem to figure out how to set that up.
    If anyone knows how to either connect a 360 to a samba server or how to stream media to an xbox 360 (or PS3) from a TC... I would love some help! I've been searching Google relentlessly, but my time on message boards has taught me I'm terrible at searching...

    Although the Time Capsule (TC) offers File Server services for SMB/CIFS, it is neither a Samba server nor a full-featured multimedia server. You can certainly store podcasts or other media files on it, but it will not have any means to stream these data to the XBox 360 or any other multimedia player device via the TC natively.

  • Can i use my time capsule as ftp server

    Hello to everyone,
    resently I have read in the net that it is possible to set the time capsule as ftp server and also as a local server.
    Can enyone explain me how to do it pracally?
    Thank to people hwo will help in advance.

    You heard wrong.. there is no ftp server in the TC..
    It can do SMB to windows and AFP to apple.. and that my friend is that.
    If you load files onto the TC you can access them remotely only via AFP.. google search remote access time capsule.

  • Can I use Time Capsule for a server ?

    hi,
    i was wondering if I can use Time Capsule for a server.
    Let's say I have an ubuntu server, and I'm running some websites and web applications on it.
    I would install these appications on ubuntu but then store the "file folders" of each website or application (with images, videos, etc.. ) on Airport capsule and leave only the application files on the server.
    Is this feasable ?
    Thanks
    Patrick

    Welcome to the discussions!
    +Is this feasible ?+
    Feasible, yes. Practical, no...unless you are willing to put up with very slow access to files that are on the Time Capsule.
    Keep in mind that the Time Capsule was designed primarily for Time Machine backups, not as a media server for quick access to data. You might want to explore other options that would allow much faster access to files when you need them.

    This might just be a typical Mountain Lion network glitch..
    Reboot the TC.. that is usually enough to fix it.
    Otherwise restart the whole network from off.. Reboot items in correct order.
    Modem.. TC.. computer. 2min gap.
    Tell us if that doesn't fix it.

  • Time Capsule vs. samba-client (Fedora)

    I've been using a 1GB Time Capsule for various things, including backing up my Linux server using the samba-client package. This had all been working well... until last night's scheduled backup.
    +Note: "Type40" is the name of my Time Capsule (either you get it, or you don't).+
    *mount -t cifs //Type40/root /smb/Type40/root*
    *mount error 13 = Permission denied*
    *Refer to the mount.cifs(8) manual page (e.g.man mount.cifs)*
    After I reset the password (I hadn't changed it myself), the error changed.
    *mount -t cifs //Type40/root /smb/Type40/root*
    *retrying with upper case share name*
    *mount error 6 = No such device or address*
    *Refer to the mount.cifs(8) manual page (e.g.man mount.cifs)*
    I tried a number of variants, and finally found one that worked.
    *mount -t cifs //Type40/Shared /smb/Type40/Shared*
    I still don't know why the original command suddenly stopped working, so now I've modified my backup script to dump its files below /smb/Type40/Shared/Users/root/{servername} instead of what previously worked as /smb/Type40/root/{servername} .
    At least it works again. :-P Here's the software versions involved at this point:
    Mac OS X: 10.5.3
    AirPort Utility: 5.3.2
    Time Capsule Version: 7.3.1
    Fedora Core release 5 (Bordeaux)
    kernel-2.6.20-1.2320.fc5
    samba-client-3.0.24-7.fc5

    I am having exactly the same issue with 7.4.2 on a 500Gb model. Intermittent connectivity and sometimes complete disappearance from the workgroup.

  • Accessing time capsule with osx server and vpn

    i have apple server and a time capsule that i use as harddisk. Now I want to access the time capsule by VPN. I cannot make an accesspoint of my time capsule.
    When I turn off file sharing on the time capsule and turn it on on the server then i cannot access my files locally.

    Sorry, have to disagree.
    I have a time capusle and its in the hfs+ and my vista pc reads it fine.
    You do need to download the airport software for windows from apple downloads. Install that and then, windows can see it fine under networking. Then to map a drive letter, just navigate to your time capsule in windows then right click on the share and give it a drive letter.
    Or you can use the cd that came with your time capsule in your windows pc and it will install the client from there.

  • Time Capsule as a server grade network attached storage?

    Can anyone comment on the performance of the TC as a network attached storage? Like Read/write speeds? Exactly how server-grade is a hard drive in the TC? They say it's SATA but that's about it.
    I am in need of a high speed storage solution for my home network and was considering the Time Machine.

    Here's a CNET review of the 500 GB Time Capsule. I think you'll find all the information you're looking for:
    http://reviews.cnet.com/network-storage/apple-time-capsule-500gb/4505-3382_7-328 18588.html
    As for the server grade issue, I know that the 500 GB uses a server grade hard drive, but the 1 TB version uses one that's not classified as server grade. Although Apple has clarified that their classification of server grade refers to mean time between failures.

  • Need help Using Time Capsule As Media Server

    New time capsule owner was wondering if someone could help me set it where i can put all my digital media, Itunes, Dvd-rips on to the TC and use it as a Media Server.
    Thanks for your help fellas

    You will need to run media server on a PC / Mac and use TC as NAS that stored your media files.

  • Time Capsule and Exchange server 2010.

    I want to Buy an time capsule 2tb and make this the hard of my network.
    I' am running my own Windows 2011 small business server and I'am using Exchange to sync my e-mail to our iphones, iPad and MacBook. The router I want to replace is an linksys wrt54g. I'am forwarding ports 80 (http) and 443 (https) to internet so we can sync our mail when we are on the road. But when we are at home we also need to connect localy to the Exchange server. In the wrt54g I have an selection box:      Filter Internet NAT Redirection .
    This means: This  feature uses Port Forwarding to prevent access to local servers from your local networked computers.
    I have unchecked this box so  I can connect the Exchange server from both wan and lan.
    Is this also posible with the time capsule (to connect to these ports via lan and wan)? This will be the only thing that is keeping me from buying one now.
    Ps. I only use the Exchange server for personal use so i don't need an full firewall.
    Thanks,
    Alexander

    You can certainly forward the ports.. any router can do that.
    I am not too sure what your second part means.. as long as you access the server on its local lan address you will have no issues.. but if you try and access it via the the full url address it will fail. The TC AFAIK has no NAT loopback. A quick google says no such luck.
    What is the function of the TC in the network because there might be alternative boxes that work better??

  • Problem with Time Capsule under Samba + timestamp

    I´m using TimeCapsule with a Linux machine via samba. I have found out that there seems no way (over samba) to copy a file to the time capsule and maintain it´s creation date.
    The same command for rsync -av ./folder_source /Volumes/TimeCapsule/ on the MacOs behaves different over AFP (copies correctly the file creation date) and Samba (doesn´t copy the file creation date, and instead uses the current time).
    This means I can´t use Rsync with Linux, as everytime, it tries to copy everything again, instead of only copying new files.
    Help I tried doing the same command on a Windows samba share, and it correctly maintains the file date. Is this a time capsule behaviour bug? Is there any config I can make to change this?

    So this is probably a dead thread, but I came across this same problem and want to note what I did to solve a very similar problem. For me it was copying from the TC, via samba, to a linux box using rsync.
    The key resolution, use cifs, not smbfs, as the mount type. When I used smbfs, the files on the TC didn't report the proper timestamp. Some where stating the year 1940 (which isn't even any epoch date). Also, for files over 2G the dates were fubared (perhaps overflow in the stat struct passed from the TC) and won't copy anyways due to smbfs file size limitations.
    Here is a sample cifs fstab line:
    //10.0.1.1/TimeCapsuleShare /mnt/timecapsule cifs ro,noauto,user,credentials=/etc/samba/tc.creds,lfs,uid=farl,gid=farl,filemode=0770,dirmode=0770 0 0
    This does not solve the funky creation timestamp issue, most of my creation dates when checked over smb were Fat32 epoch of Jan 1 1980, but were correct when checked over afp from a Mac. I'm uncertain if this is a smb deficiency or TC bug, but I didn't look too much into that since by default rsync uses sizes and modification dates (AFAIK), so it shouldn't matter.
    Also, if you were like me and only discovered this after copying huge amounts of data that you don't want to recopy here's a quick script I found and modified to change local timestamps to match what's on the TC and prevent rsync from recopying files that shouldn't be recopied:
    #! /usr/bin/perl -w
    # assumes TC is mounted on /mnt/timecapsule.
    # assumes /mnt/store/timecapsule/weekly.0/store/ is the rsync backup of /mnt/timecapsule/store/, the directory you want to pull the true timestamps from.
    use strict;
    if (`mount` !~ m/timecapsule/) {
    printf ("srcmount not mounted\n");
    exit 1;
    my $srcdir="/mnt/timecapsule/store/";
    my $dstdir="/mnt/store/timecapsule/weekly.0/store/";
    my @files = `find $srcdir -type f -print`;
    chomp @files;
    foreach my $file (@files) {
    my $mtime = localtime((stat($file))[9]);
    $file =~ s/$srcdir/$dstdir/;
    printf qq!touch -m -d "$mtime" "$file"\n!;
    my $sout = `touch -m -d "$mtime" "$file"`;
    printf $sout;
    exit 0;

  • How to use time capsule as media server on samsung tv

    My time capsule is connected via lan with my samsung Series7.
    The tv has a connectin to the internet via lan.
    I want to stream movies from the time capsule directly via lan to the tv.
    "All Share" doesn't see my time capsule.
    Do I really have to install a server-software on time capsule?
    If yes, how?

    There is no media server in the TC or available to load in the TC. The TV is probably needing DLNA streaming which Apple will not do.. since they use their own standard.
    You have to have a player between the devices.. and not an Apple TV unless it has been JB.. because Apple places too many limitations on it. You cannot JB the latest ATV v3. So look at other products.. eg WDTV live.
    Or many others that can play media files stored on the TC to the TV.
    Or you need to use iPad or media computer to stream from itunes to the ATV plugged into the TV.. it does get complicated.

  • How can we use Time Capsule as a server to access files from remote locations?

    I use Timecapsule to save my data but I would like to use it as a server to access my file when I'm not at home. Is it possible?

    Please take a look at Apple's Back to My Mac (BTMM) features here:
    Set up and use Back to My Mac - Apple Support
    There is another method that you can use, but it would require the following:
    1) A static or fixed Internet connection IP address from your Internet Service Provider
    2) The Time Capsule, or another Apple router must be the main router for the network

  • Question About Time Capsule as Media Server

    Hi,
    I am debating purchasing the 1TB Time Capsule. I would put all of my media and photos on the drive and use it as a Media Server. However, I'd like to verify what this thing can and cannot do before I purchase it. If anybody can comment on if TC can accomplish these tasks, I would appreciate it.
    1) Will I be able to stream the TC content to my Apple TV?
    2) I have a Macbook that goes with me when I travel. If I got the TC, no media content would live on my Macbook, but I'd like to access the content on the TC from the road. If I have a Mobile Me account, will I be able to access the media content on the TC from my Macbook?
    3) I have a server that hosts my website, and my current router has Port Forwarding. Can you configure port forwarding with the TC?
    4) I understand you can attach a USB drive to the TC. I'd like to hang a drive off of the TC to back it up. I thought I read you can do this, but has anybody found an automated way to do this? Are there any backup programs (Deja Vu or Backup) that can use the TC as a source and a TC USB drive as a target?
    I appreciate any assistance with my questions.
    Thanks

    I have my TC set up as a wireless media server. I have over 800 movies and a huge music library. I Stream to my computer and to my apple TV via Itunes on my imac
    Pros- since I have almost all apple stuff, IMAC, Apple TV. The installation and streaming is flawless and very easy.
    COns- The TC is extremely slow to write to. So getting stuff on it takes forever even if you use a LAN cable. Once it is on -no problems.
    Since the TC is so slow itunes will sometimes show things as not being there when it does a quick scan or not playable. This is remedied by just restarting itunes once the TC harddrive is up to speed.
    Price- You can get a wireless router and a 1TB external for $150 and have a faster machine that does the same thing without all the speed problems.
    I was a little MAC crazy when the TC came out and bought it before the reviews were out. IN hindsight I would have just bought a wireless router and an external and saved myself the money. But I have it and it works. Kindof like a mule.

  • Lion server doesn't delete open port service once added in time capsule mgmt from server app.

    I was trying to set a specific port to avoid file sharing conflict using time capsule as main router with lion server.
    I added a new public service in Server.app in time capsule section where you can manage Airport setting and open ports for mail cal vpn etc. I  assigned a port and given a name as requested. In my case a named "test"  and gave port number 5678 to try.
    Once I decided to delete this public service I noticed that anytime I make a changes in Server.app in Time capsule settings Server.app perform a refresh and the deleted servirce appear again and again with the same name and same setting in airport utility (ports management)
    The only way to delet it is to go in airport utility and delete that from there. But in the chance you want to make another change in TC managemnet from Server.app you.ll see the service deleted from everywhere magically appearing again in your airport device in my case a TC.
    Callled Apple and they said to investigate the forum.
    Now if I maje a change in Server app. TC section to add or remouve public service I have 10 usefull open ports (not enabled) in Airport ( TC)
    Any Help?
    Thx
    Jo

    I have been having this same problem, except that I cannot open basic ports through either app. I've tried opening the standard web services port on 80, but neither app (Server or Airport Utility) will open it. Apple support has been worthless.
