Time Capsule vs. samba-client (Fedora)

I've been using a 1GB Time Capsule for various things, including backing up my Linux server using the samba-client package. This had all been working well... until last night's scheduled backup.
+Note: "Type40" is the name of my Time Capsule (either you get it, or you don't).+
*mount -t cifs //Type40/root /smb/Type40/root*
*mount error 13 = Permission denied*
*Refer to the mount.cifs(8) manual page (e.g.man mount.cifs)*
After I reset the password (I hadn't changed it myself), the error changed.
*mount -t cifs //Type40/root /smb/Type40/root*
*retrying with upper case share name*
*mount error 6 = No such device or address*
*Refer to the mount.cifs(8) manual page (e.g.man mount.cifs)*
I tried a number of variants, and finally found one that worked.
*mount -t cifs //Type40/Shared /smb/Type40/Shared*
I still don't know why the original command suddenly stopped working, so now I've modified my backup script to dump its files below /smb/Type40/Shared/Users/root/{servername} instead of what previously worked as /smb/Type40/root/{servername} .
At least it works again. :-P Here's the software versions involved at this point:
Mac OS X: 10.5.3
AirPort Utility: 5.3.2
Time Capsule Version: 7.3.1
Fedora Core release 5 (Bordeaux)
kernel-2.6.20-1.2320.fc5
samba-client-3.0.24-7.fc5

I am having exactly the same issue with 7.4.2 on a 500Gb model. Intermittent connectivity and sometimes complete disappearance from the workgroup.

  • Problem with Time Capsule under Samba + timestamp

    I´m using TimeCapsule with a Linux machine via samba. I have found out that there seems no way (over samba) to copy a file to the time capsule and maintain it´s creation date.
    The same command for rsync -av ./folder_source /Volumes/TimeCapsule/ on the MacOs behaves different over AFP (copies correctly the file creation date) and Samba (doesn´t copy the file creation date, and instead uses the current time).
    This means I can´t use Rsync with Linux, as everytime, it tries to copy everything again, instead of only copying new files.
    Help I tried doing the same command on a Windows samba share, and it correctly maintains the file date. Is this a time capsule behaviour bug? Is there any config I can make to change this?

    So this is probably a dead thread, but I came across this same problem and want to note what I did to solve a very similar problem. For me it was copying from the TC, via samba, to a linux box using rsync.
    The key resolution, use cifs, not smbfs, as the mount type. When I used smbfs, the files on the TC didn't report the proper timestamp. Some where stating the year 1940 (which isn't even any epoch date). Also, for files over 2G the dates were fubared (perhaps overflow in the stat struct passed from the TC) and won't copy anyways due to smbfs file size limitations.
    Here is a sample cifs fstab line:
    //10.0.1.1/TimeCapsuleShare /mnt/timecapsule cifs ro,noauto,user,credentials=/etc/samba/tc.creds,lfs,uid=farl,gid=farl,filemode=0770,dirmode=0770 0 0
    This does not solve the funky creation timestamp issue, most of my creation dates when checked over smb were Fat32 epoch of Jan 1 1980, but were correct when checked over afp from a Mac. I'm uncertain if this is a smb deficiency or TC bug, but I didn't look too much into that since by default rsync uses sizes and modification dates (AFAIK), so it shouldn't matter.
    Also, if you were like me and only discovered this after copying huge amounts of data that you don't want to recopy here's a quick script I found and modified to change local timestamps to match what's on the TC and prevent rsync from recopying files that shouldn't be recopied:
    #! /usr/bin/perl -w
    # assumes TC is mounted on /mnt/timecapsule.
    # assumes /mnt/store/timecapsule/weekly.0/store/ is the rsync backup of /mnt/timecapsule/store/, the directory you want to pull the true timestamps from.
    use strict;
    if (`mount` !~ m/timecapsule/) {
    printf ("srcmount not mounted\n");
    exit 1;
    my $srcdir="/mnt/timecapsule/store/";
    my $dstdir="/mnt/store/timecapsule/weekly.0/store/";
    my @files = `find $srcdir -type f -print`;
    chomp @files;
    foreach my $file (@files) {
    my $mtime = localtime((stat($file))[9]);
    $file =~ s/$srcdir/$dstdir/;
    printf qq!touch -m -d "$mtime" "$file"\n!;
    my $sout = `touch -m -d "$mtime" "$file"`;
    printf $sout;
    exit 0;

  • Time Capsule / Airport Extreme client mode and alternatives

    I have three PCs on a boat.
    I want to create a wired Ethernet with shared internet access via wifi from a remote, land-based access point. I have no control over the broadband router at the other end (so putting an apple device at the other end is not an option).
    I read here:
    http://bc.whirlpool.net.au/bc/hardware/?action=hview&modelid=264
    ... that the Time Capsule supports "client mode", so I bought a TC today with fingers crossed.
    As soon as I configure the TC for client mode, it disappears off the wired Ethernet. In the instructions for the TC, there is a diagram showing the TC operating in what looks like client mode, but without any Ethernet devices attached. My interpretation is that if it does support client mode, it only does so as a wireless network drive and USB hub (ie no wired Ethernet). Correct?
    So, I think my options are:
    1. Plug a wireless gaming adaptor into the WAN port on the TC and use that to connect the TC to the remote broadband connection.
    or
    2. Take the TC back to the shop and get a gigabit router with aftermarket dd-wrt firmware to enable it to run in client mode, and then buy a gigabit NAS.
    Am I talking sense?
    Hopefully,
    R

    Thanks for your reply...
    I am thinking of keeping the Airport Extreme as I have my PS3 and my Xbox 360 Elite connected to it by Ethernet and my Wii connected by Wi-Fi.
    So the Wireless clients are the iMac, iPhones / iPod Touch, Nintendo Wii and my Canon Wi-Fi printer... all of which necessitate the 802.11n (b&g compatible) setting on the AEBS
    I think that means that the Time capsule, Apple TV, Macbook and Airport Express will run on a throttled back 802.11n when ever there is no activity from the other devices... I am not entirely sure how the b&g compatible setting works.
    One of my favourite things about my setup is being able to use the iPhone Remote App to control my Macbook, Apple TV and Airport Express. Sadly, I have to have iTunes running on my computer as Apple Tv won't transmit its content to Airport Express which would be the ideal.
    Time Capsule has now been setup but I want to connect the HDD by USB and then use it as a Network drive, hopefully at 802.11n speeds. I will look into partitioning the Time Capsule but it has almost 300GB of Movies and I don't want to have to start again with all of that...

  • Time Capsule as Samba Server + Xbox 360?

    I'm trying to connect a my xbox 360 or PS3 to my time capsule so I can dump my podcasts onto my time capsule and then stream them to my TV (without buying an AppleTV... or Mac Mini, which is what I really want). I seem to understand I can connect my 360 to a Samba server, and that the TC can be a samba server, but I can't seem to figure out how to set that up.
    If anyone knows how to either connect a 360 to a samba server or how to stream media to an xbox 360 (or PS3) from a TC... I would love some help! I've been searching Google relentlessly, but my time on message boards has taught me I'm terrible at searching...

    Although the Time Capsule (TC) offers File Server services for SMB/CIFS, it is neither a Samba server nor a full-featured multimedia server. You can certainly store podcasts or other media files on it, but it will not have any means to stream these data to the XBox 360 or any other multimedia player device via the TC natively.

  • Time Capsule - Nortel VPN Client

    Has Apple finally addressed the issue(s) with Nortel VPN clients??? I know that this has been an ongoing issue...I lost track of notes...can someone please update me. Thanks!

    I tried for about a week to get my Contivity 4_65.09 client to work thru the Time Capsule to no avail. When I called apple, they refused to offer any help. I have not seen any successful updates from anyone. Returned TC on day 14. I really did like it other than this issue, but sadly, not being able to connect to work is a dealbreaker.

  • Access Time Capsule Disk from Linux Fedora

    From my Linux Fedora, I am connected to the main wireless network for the TC. When I go to "Browse Network", I can see 2 destinations named M's TC (FileSharing), when I try to access the first one it opens but has no content at all! While the other one gives an error:
    Could not dispaly "Ms-TC.local (afp)"
    The file is of an unknown type
    Do you know how can I access the TC disk from Fedora?
    Thanks.

    I use FileBrowser app. It works. Their latest version is much easier to configure than earlier versions. You need to turn file sharing on and SMB on your time capsule disk.
    I use the time capsule disk to store a few files which I never want to be on my iPhone or iPad, but do want access to them. They are not backed up on the time capsule but since they also exist on my Mac, they are backed up from there.

  • Time Capsule as VPN client

    Hi all,
    I'm wondering if it is possible to configure Time Capsule to act as a VPN client (as it is quite normal for traditional wireless router), such that all the traffic that leaves my home network, exploits this secure connection.
    In other words: I'd like that any device in my network can used the shared VPN. It's the best trade off between security and simplicity.

    Welcome to Apple's discussion groups.
    There's nothing in AirPort Utility that supports such a configuration, so the answer would appear to be no.

  • Time capsule as samba server?

    Can I ever use time capsule as a media server? I bought the 3terra time capsule without thinking that could not be a media server at this price.Shoul I give it back? Or wait until you will make it to run as a media server?

    It is not and never will be a media server. Apple have locked up the firmware tighter than a drum.. and the TC itself has totally avoided hacking for this long I kind of doubt you are going to suddenly get Apple TV type invasion of xmbc etc.
    The TC will not function at all well in the role even if it were possible. It is a backup device that is itself difficult to backup. Storing media is a bad idea on a device like the TC without having some built in rsync type backup function.
    If it is not what you want and you still have right of return.. then return it. Most NAS you buy from the big names, QNAP, Synology, Netgear will have Time Machine extensions plus various media players on board.
    You can play media from the TC but only as a file store .. not as the server. Eg a WD live will play media from the TC no issues.. It is the WD live of course that is the media player. So TC is just a network hard disk.
    If you are using a windows network.. with no Mac's in sight.. TC is the wrong product for sure. It is brilliant for Mac with Time Machine.. although the 3TB is overpriced IMHO.. the 2TB is much better value.

  • Client id on time capsule

  • SW Update for Time Capsule?

    I'm now using TC as my router so I'm wondering how it will get its sw updates. Do they come through Software Updates or is there some other method for doing this?

    Thanks, Niel, I see how to do updates but I worry about this part: "If you are updating a Time Capsule, disconnect any clients that may be using the Time Capsule's disk before installing the firmware."
    I know why this is necessary but I worry about remembering to tell my wife's MacBook to turn off TM. Seems that if I do forget her entire backup imagine can be lost. If there's no sw update for, say, a year what can I do to remember this?

  • Airport Express not working with Time Capsule

    I replaced a NetGear wireless router with a new Time Capsule. After some trial and error I got everything that was hanging off the NetGear - 2 x TiVo machines, printer, extra ports for business laptops - working except my "old" Airport Express unit that I had been using to send my iTunes to my stereo tuner. I just cannot get this to connect to the Time Capsule wirelessly no matter what I do. It works just fine when connected wirelessly direct to my iMac but just will not connect to the Time Capsule as a client. Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance.

    I would suggest, reconnecting the Express to the TC again. Use the AirPort Utility to make ALL configuration changes including the network extending settings. Then restart both base stations and check that the settings are still good. Then disconnect the Express and give it a few minutes to initialize. It should connect. If not, then the issue may be either the distance or obstructions (like walls, ceilings, floors, etc.) that is preventing the Express from getting a signal from the TC that is adequate enough to extend.

  • Before Time Capsule Firmware Update Query

    I have just purchased Time Capsule and after a few glitches have set it up to work with my ISP.
    I noted there was a firmware update shown to me when trying to configure although I haven't tried it yet as setting up took me longer than I thought. It's working but I came to the forum to read about the firmware update procedure (think I will wait until I am more confident with the product)
    I would appreciate advice after reading Apple's document on a firmware update "If you are updating a Time Capsule, disconnect any clients that may be using the Time Capsule's disk before installing the firmware."
    I only have my ADSL router modem cable connected to the WAN port (presume clients would mean printers or USB hard drive) or do I disconnect the modem cable after downloading the update before install?
    I would prefer to ask before I try anything as I don't want to loose my connection completely.
    Thanks if anyone can advise on the correct way to do the update although I know some have downgraded again which is why I am very unsure.

    Hi,
    Just leave the WAN port connected. The advice to disconnect any clients is just for the case they are using the TC's harddisk (for saving a document of making a backup to it) because their connection will fail when the TC reboots after you have applied the update. If your're the only one around just proceed.

  • Accessing the hard drive of a Time Capsule with Windows XP

    Hi,
    I have a time capsule configured in client mode so that I could share a printer and a hard drive on my existing wireless network. I now can print from both computers and I can acces the hard drive with the mac that I used to configure the time capsule.
    But I can't find anyway to access the hard drive from the pc. When I use AX to connect as a guest it's giving me an error "user unknown or session desactivated contact the admin (67)". (The config is authorizing guests so it should work)
    What's wrong ?
    Thanks for your help,
    Julien

    FireWire Target Disk Mode requires two Macs.
    Can you remove the hard drive from teh PC laptop? If so, you can use one of these:
    Newer Technology Universal Drive Adapter USB 3.0 - connects any 2.5", 3.5" or 5.25" drive
    to mount the drive on the Mac. most Macs will read PC drives. You can't salvage applications but you may be able to recover data files.

  • Is there a way you can see the Time Capsule in OS 9?

    I am setting up a time capsule for a client for his PC/Mac Business, he has 2 Windows based PCs that run XP, one intel iMac running Tiger, and one Dual 1.25GHz G4 running an OS9 app that he needs for his business.
    Is there a way you can get the time capsule volume to mount inside of OS9???

    There isn't even a way to connect to the IP from OS 9, and transfer files to it manually?

  • Question about Time Capsule and Airport Express co-existence

    I have a new 3TB ME182LL/A Time Capsule attached to my wired home LAN, in bridge mode.  It works fine both as an access point on the upper floors of my home and as a Time Machine device. I also have an Airport Express, whose function in my network is solely to control my whole-house audio system from ITunes. I don't need, want, or use the wireless networking features of the Airport Express. I just have an audio cable running from it to my stereo, and an Ethernet patch cable connects it to my wired LAN.  The network mode in the Airport Express is set to "off".  Historically, the Airport Express has worked fine in this wired lan mode.  However, I unplugged it at some point while having some initial trouble deploying the new Time Capsule and only turned it back on today.  After turning it back on I observed something strange. My speedy wireless connection upstairs via the Time Capsule became slow. And when I launched Airport Utility, it drew a network diagram which showed my Time Capsule as a CLIENT of the Airport Express. In other words, the network diagram showed Internet at the top, then a vertical line down the the Airport Express, then the Time Capsule below that.  The correct / desired diagram would be the Time Capsule and Airport express as peers.  I connected to the Airport Express and verified that network mode was set to "off" but the incorrect network diagram persisted (as did poor wireless performance) until I unplugged the Airport Express.  After I did that, the Airport Utility drew the network correctly, although of course it showed a yellow caution sign next to the Airport Express, since it was down. And my wireless speed / reliability returned to normal. What is going on here?

    The automatic setup in the airport utility has changed something.
    Is the line down to the TC from the express dotted.. in other words is wireless??
    Funny stuff happens.
    Please post the screenshots of the 3 pages from the airport utility setup for both airport express and TC..
    Make sure wireless is set to off in the express.
    Both should be set to dhcp on the internet tab and both set to off bridge mode on the network tab.
    So for example the bridge on the network tab.
    The summary page can also be a help.
    There is a half summary page when you click the item in the airport utility.
    There is also a fully summary page, when you hold option key and double click the TC icon for example.
