Time capsule bloat after MacBook replacement

Hello. The original MacBook I bought, which was backed up to my 500GB Time Capsule, needed to be replaced. I got the replacement unit the other day and immediately transferred my data from the Time Capsule to the new Mac. Data restoration went beautifully.
Last night I did my first backup to the TC from the new Mac. Time Machine wanted to do a full 150GB backup. I thought this made sense since it's a new machine so I let TM do its thing. Everything went fine. This morning, however, I noticed that the TC now only has ~100GB free. This surprises me because when I enter the Time Machine there is only 1 day's worth of backups. Therefore I would think I should have ~350GB free on the TC.
I'm wondering if the TC is still holding a backup from my original, now defunct, MacBook. Perhaps it thinks the new MacBook is just a second computer that I'm backing up to it. How can I tell? If this is indeed the case how can I get rid of the old MacBook's backup and reclaim the space? Thanks.

Hi and welcome to the discussions.
"I'm wondering if the TC is still holding a backup from my original, now defunct, MacBook"
Sounds like this is exactly the case. I had the same experience about a year ago transferring data from my Time Capsule to a new laptop.
Click on Finder at the upper left of your screen and select Preferences. Under the "Show these items on the desktop" heading, make sure there is a check mark next to Connected Servers.
Next double-click on your hard drive icon in the upper right hand corner of the screen. Look for your Time Capsule on the left had side of the next window under SHARED. You may need to click on the small arrow next to the name to reveal a drop down list.
Click on the Time Capsule icon on the left and a Time Capsule folder should appear on the right side of the window at the top. Double click the folder icon. You may need to click the Connect tab on the upper right of the pane and then enter your password for the device.
The next window should show a few .sparsebundle files with the dates of the first data transfers for each file. You can delete the old sparsebundle file since you should have another file with the date of your most recent data transfer.
It will take some time for the process to complete but after several hours or so, you should have the space back on your Time Capsule. Might also be a good idea to restart your computer and the Time Capsule as well.

How old was this backup? It sounds like it was at least several weeks old.
You can look directly in the TM backup for the music.
    1. Connect to the external HDD the backup is kept on.
    2. Open a Finder window and select the backup drive in the left hand panel. Double click into the folders until you see a list of folders with dates.
These are the incremental backups. You can start at the top or the bottom of the list but I suggest you double Latest/<HDD Name>/Users/<Account Name>/Music/iTunes/iTunes Media/Music. From this location you can start looking for the "missing" music. When/if you find it you can simply drag-n-drop to ~/Music/iTunes/iTunes Media/Music on the internal HDD.
If the music is actually not in the backups (for whatever reason) then you've got a problem.
You can download the uploaded files from the cloud by deleting the affected tracks from the iTunes library (but not the cloud!), highlighting multiple tracks at once, right-clicking and choosing "download."

  • External hard drive is not working on airport time capsule even after 7.7.2 firmware update.

External hard drive is not working on airport time capsule even after 7.7.2 firmware update.
I have the latest Airpor Time capsule 2gb. I specifically bought it so that I could have an external hardrive set up to wirelessly house my itunes library and movies. When i connect the drive, all i get is that the disk needs to be repaired.
the drive can works fine when connected to the macbook pro and I have run the verify and repair features in disk utility. I have also reset the airport timecapsule as well following these changes and still no change.
The 7.7.2 update says that it addressed the usb issue of not showing the drives but there are still problems as I cannot get it to appear.
    Please help.
    Thanks

How is the hard drive formatted?
Have you tried using a powered USB hub with the drive when it is connected to the Time Capsule?
(The USB port on the Time Capsule is borderline as far as power is concerned....you may need to use a powered hub.....even if the hard drive has its own power supply)
If the drive is formatted correctly....and....it has ample power, it will "show up" when you open AirPort Utility, click Edit, then click the Disks tab at the top of the next window.
In the example below, my Time Capsule drive is named "Backups" and another drive named "WD Drive" is connected to the USB port on the Time Capsule.
You should see the name of your Time Capsule drive (named "Data" unless you have changed the name) and the name of the USB drive if you perform the same check.
    What do you see?

Time Machine Locked after MacBook Air reformatted. My MacBook Air was overfull due to an Address book issue (duplication) so after many attempts to clear space, I ended up wiping out the system and reloading Lion. This resulted in the Time Machine thinking that it was now connected to a different computer. Apparently this diables the existing information.
Now I can see that the back-ups exist (back to Sept 2012) but they are greyed out, therefore unavailale to restore. Again, this seems like an issue that shouldn't be happening. The whole point of the Time Machine is to enable reinstatement of data after catastrophic failure. What if my computer actually had to be replaced due to a hardware issue? How would I beableto restore anything?
    The path already (unsuccessfully) taken;
Open Library on the computer, Open Time Machine, Select Correct date, drill down to correct data you wish to restore, click "Restore".
This did not work because the correct date was greyed out. Restore key was greyed out.

I've never personally done this, but I'm qute sure you can.  After all, this would be one method of migrating from the MacBook to the MacBook Air (with the assistance of Migration Assistant).

Hi I was using disk utility, right now my mac cannot read any internal drive even the original, I test both drives the original hd and the ssd. So I took the mac with a technician to try to fix it, he said that the flex sata cable is bad, so I am going to replace it, unfortunately he does not have it in stock as soon as I get it I will try to use the ssd, I know that is working right now I am using it in the USB port.
Why do you think sata III is not the problem?

  • Time Machine back-up (via a Time Capsule) on a MacBook Pro

Can I create a Time Machine back-up (via a Time Capsule) on a MacBook Pro using Snow Leopard as the OS and then upgrade my OS to Mountain Lion (a few days later) to continue using Time Machine?

then upgrade my OS to Mountain Lion (a few days later) to continue using Time Machine?
I am not sure what you mean by "to continue"
You can continue.. but upgrading is not required "to continue"
Often you will have issues though. It will create a very large backup, due to the new OS. And going back to Snow Leopard might become impossible.
I think personally it is better to have a backup of your machine before upgrade .. and keep it separate to later backup after the upgrade.
You can also do a disk image of the computer running SL to external drive just using free edition of superduper or even disk utility.
Upgrade installs are never as good as a clean install btw.. !!

You don't need to do anything.. both computers can use the TC and will create separate backups. It is simply designed to work with Time Machine.

  • Time capsule problems after OS reinstall

After getting a blue screen on restart I had to do an archive/OS reinstall today. The reinstall worked fine but I am now having problems accessing my Time Capsule.
At first my computer didn't even recognize my time capsule. After restarting my time capsule, my computer recognized it. However, when I tried to open time machine to access the files, it stalled on "connecting to backup volume" for about 45 minutes and never connected. Similarly, the backup stalls on "preparing backup." I tried to stop backing up but it is currently stalled on "stopping backup." Finally, time capsule has disappeared from the menu at the top of my screen.
Any thoughts on addressing these issues would be greatly appreciated.

I have the same problem as well. I did an archive and install with OSX, then updated to 10.5.5 and now all the TC does is spin and say preparing. A sample from the console is

    It's good for that . . .
But also I don't keep all my stuff in my Mac.
    But not for that.
This older and not day-by-day usage files I want to store in the time machine.
You can do that (see below), but how are you going to back them up?   If your only copies are on the TC, when (not if) it fails, you risk losing your only copy of the data.
Is it possible to split TC in two partitions.
No, but there are some workarounds, including making a fixed-size disk image on it to "reserve" some space.  See #Q3 in Using Time Machine with a Time Capsule.
But you still won't have backups of the stuff you put there.
You don't say what kind of Mac you have.  If it's a desktop model, just keep the external HD connected to it, and let Time Machine back it up along with your internal HD.
However, it sounds like you may have a laptop, where that's not going to be convenient.  In that case, your best bet might be to copy the external HD to a disk image on the TC as above, then keep the HD in a safe place.
To finish, when i enter the TC and go through the Time line how can I get a file from there and move it back to Mac hd.

  • AppleCare coverage of Time Capsule ordered w/ Macbook

Apple sales & Apple Store say that if I buy Time Capsule w/ a Macbook & AppleCare, AppleCare Protection will cover the Time Capsule. But it is not written anywhere that I can find in their online terms and conditions. I believe there is language about AppleCare coverage of other devices purchased (vs. ordered) with computers, but not the Time Capsule. This may be because Time Capsule hasn't been released yet. I would like to place an order for all three now, but would like more than verbal assurances that Time Capsule will be covered. Can anybody suggest an iron clad solution, or do more than offer opinions and verbal assurances?
