Time Capsule - bought in San Diego USA. MacBook Pro bought in Jakarta, Indonesia. Why won't my Time Capsule set up? All I get is the flashing amber light.

I bought a Time Capsule in San Diego, California. I bought my MacBook Pro in Jakarta, indonesia where I live. I have Wi Fi in the house which I use for mail etc with my Mac. However, my Time Capsule will not set up, all I get is the amber flashing light. Could it be anything related with a production bought in the USA that may not be compatible (wireless frequency?) with a product bought in SE Asia?

Did you perform a "hard reset" on the Time Capsule before you tried to set it up?  That would be a requirement any time that you change locations or networks on the Time Capsule.
Power up the Time Capsule for a few minutes, then hold in the reset button firmly for 10 seconds and release. Allow a full minute for the Time Capsule to restart to a slow, blinking amber light.  It is now reset and can be set up to connect to your "new" network.
Assuming that you have the right wall plug adapter, the Time Capsule will run on 100-240 Volts and 50-60 Hz, so it will operate just about anywhere in the world from a power standpoint.
There are some differences in allowed wireless channels between the U.S. and S.E. Asia, so use channels......36, 40, 44, or 48 on the 5 GHz band in case the higher channels are not allowed where you are.

  • Time capsule for back-up only. How do you turn off the flashing amber light?

I am using time capsule to back up my work computer.  I use internet through an ethernet cable, no wireless (it's my desktop work computer!), so don't need the airport - just back up on time machine.
I figured out (although there is NO information in the time capsule manual) how to set up the time capsule to wirelessly back up my computer, but because I don't have it plugged into the modem, and I haven't set up an airport connection, it blinks amber at me.  How do I make it know that it is as set up as I want it to be, so it will be a steady green?  Should I edit the airport utility options so that wireless network mode and/or router mode are "OFF"?  If I set wireless mode to off, will my computer still "see" the time capsule and back up using time machine?
This might just be finicky on my part, but the flashing light is annoying me!

If you set up the Time Capsule to back up wirelessly, it functions only as a wireless hard drive...with no routing capabilities at all. In other words, the Ethernet ports on the Time Capsule are not enabled, even though you might have an Ethernet cable connected.
Try opening Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Click on the Time Capsule icon, then click directly on the amber dot
AirPort Utility will display a message with information about why the amber dot is flashing. It might be something like a message that a firmware update is available for the Time Capsule.
Should I edit the airport utility options so that wireless network mode and/or router mode are "OFF"?
No, since the Time Capsule will no longer connect wirelessly if you do this.

  • HT1338 My MacBook Pro (running Leopard 10.5.8) won't allow keyboard to type an upper case 'C' using the shift key...works fine with caps lock, or, with my Typinator workaround using double-typed lower case c (not always best). Any ideas?

My MacBook Pro keyboard won't type an upper case 'C' using the shift key... only with caps lock. Workaround has been to use Typinator by typing a double lower case c, not always the best solution. Mac is a refurbished model, which initially was fine. Apple tech helped me correct the quirk when it first appeared, but now it has returned and refuses fixes. Any ideas?

I'm willing to bet that this has something to do with iCloud.  I've been facing a frozen computer nearly every time I go into it.
In Activity Monitor I have seen two programs associate with iCloud that take up about 2.5 GB of memory (I only have 4 in the computer) -- causing everything to freeze.  One of these is called "iCloud Helper" and the other one is something like "Address Book Sync helper" -- I see parts of these names in the stuff you have posted.
I am at my wits' end with these and have written to Apple asking them to do away with these or fix them.  To get rid of the Address book sync thing I have gone into system preferences for iCloud and unchecked Contacts -- but then spontaneously it gets rechecked.  And oftentimes after I Force Quit the iCloud helper, it spontaneously turns on again.  My conclusion --- the iCloud is basically unusable.  It turns a Mac into the most useless, clogged, sluggish PC.  If this is happening to a lot of people's computers -- and I see no reason why yours or mine should be an exception -- these programs just might destroy Apple itself.
So -- I'm about to completely give up on iCloud, and I suspect that others will too unless this gets fixed.
    Cheers,
    Bob

how do i set up this airport express. it worked now doenst. blinking amber light all the time. the note says the

If everything seems to be working OK, but the amber light is blinking, this might be a signal that there is an update available for the AirPort Express.
Open AirPort Utility, click Manual Setup, then click directly on the word Status to check for messages.
If the printer is not working, I suggest that you perform a Factory Default Reset to get the Express back to new, out of box settings. Then, you can reconfigure the device again as needed.

  • I have a new Macbook Pro running Mavericks and safari consistently freezes. It takes several 'return/enter' presses to get to the page I requested. I have seen other comments and replies on how to fix (clear cache, clear extensions/plug-ins), to no avail.

I have a new macbook pro running mavericks and only using Safari as my browser.  75% of my url requests are 'hung up' and freeze.  I have seen other posts and have tried to clear cache, reset safari, remove extensions, but to no avail.
    Any recommendations?

If it works in a new user account, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

  • My macbook pro see my canon HV30, why won't Final Cut Express?

    any NEW suggestions?
I have tried trashing the prefs, starting things in different orders....
    I am very frustrated.

I had similar problems. Here's what I did, and now it works. Not sure which part made it work, but hopefully this is helpful:
    Open FCE HD.
Connect HV30 via Firewire on the back of the HV30.
Make sure HV30 is on and in "Play" mode.
Make sure the screen of the HV30 is closed.
In FCE HD, go Final Cut Express HD > Easy Setup... > DV-NTSC FireWire Basic >Setup.
In FCE HD, go File > Capture...
It seems odd that the screen being open may have caused a problem, but it worked after I closed the screen. Of course, I also fiddled with other things, so who knows?
    Good luck.

Can I use the new Time Capsule to backup my mid 2010 Macbook Pro?
Yes, if you are asking about using Time Machine to backup the Mac.
Also can I want to free up my hard disk, can I save my photos and files on the time capsule and later access through wifi?
You are not thinking of deleting the photos and files on your Mac, are you?  If you do this, you will have no backups for those files.
Another concern is that Time Machine backs up the changes on your Mac. At some point, Time Machine will automatically delete the photos and files from the Time Capsule.....you just don't know when this might occur.
In other words, only delete files from your Mac that you can afford to lose.

  • Airport Express will not stop flashing amber light; Reset multiple times; Works for a second with green light and then resumes flashing amber

I bought an Airport Express to extend my Airport Extreme about a month ago. It worked great until 2 weeks ago it started flashing amber. I reset it and set it up via airport utility and it would work for a little while, with great connection, and then it resumes the flashing amber light. Here is the error message:
"This AirPort base station was unable to extend the wireless network. Make sure the wireless network you're trying to extend was set up and is working correctly, that you entered a matching wireless network password into this device, and that this device is in range of the wireless network."
The Airport Extreme is in working condition, in range, and entered in correctly. I do not understand how it can work great for a second and then stop.
    Thanks!

Power off both the AirPort Extreme and AirPort Express
    Wait a few minutes
Power up the AirPort Extreme, and let it run a few minutes
Then, power up the AirPort Express
If you continue to have difficulty, ask Apple to replace the AirPort Express.

My Macbook Pro, bought 2012, takes a very long time to start up/restart (5 mins) every single time I have shut it down.  I try not to shut it down at all now because once or twice, I have got a grey screen, and then nothing. I've held down the power button to shut down again and restart  How do I fix all this?

Start up with your built-in Recovery disk by holding down the Command and R keys when starting. Open Disk Utility from there and use it to REPAIR your disk (you've already verified it and it came up with errors).
With any luck, your problems will be solved. While I was there, I would also repair  permissions.
    Good luck,

    Hello
I bought my wife a new MacBook Pro, in setting it up for her, I took her Time Machine external drive to migrate onto the new machine but her old MBP not only was on 10.6, it was my old machine which I was still Administrator for.
i plugged in the external drive to start the migration process after entering her name and username from the old machine which gave me the options on transferring the old data over.
I also unchecked the Administrative end that had my info hoping that ONLY her data, files, etc., would be the ones sent over to her new machine which I wanted her to be the ONLY Administrator for. All went like clockwork until the restart.
Normally the screen should show the username and only need the password but both entries were blank, as in ‘Other’ sign in option available only. I entered her name and password, nothing….used her username and password, nothing. Used my old Administrator name and password, NOTHING!
I tried defaulting to factory settings from the Restore feature but it directs me to notify Apple. I tried in Terminal to change the password, nothing. I tried to boot from MY external drive and it doesn’t recognize it. I tried to even use my external drive which actually has the Mavericks upgrade, nothing!
Basically I can only get the startup screen which isn’t accepting the username/password or the Restore feature which doesn’t offer any options helpful!
Please, how do I start from scratch and start over here? Or simply change the Administrator name and password so I can proceed with everything thats already on there? I wish I could even boot from another drive but no luck on anything!

First, on the old machine, make your wife's account an admin one. Log into it and delete yours. Then, update the TM backup. Finally, use Internet recovery mode, ⌘⌥R, erase the HD, and restore the OS. One first boot, follow the steps outlined in Pondini's Setup New Mac guide.

So here's what I done so far:

Done disk utility. Disk verified with no errors. I even re formatted disk. - no success starting.

Sounds like the hard dre has left the building, Died, in the Sh*tter, Gone to the hard drive resting place in the sky.
Buy a new drive connect it to the system with a SATA to USB adapter and see if you can install Mt Lion on that drive connected externally. If you can then the drive inside your system has failed.
Oh Wait!!!! You have the 2009 model. They are known for bad drive to logic board cables. So it may not be the drive itself but the cable going from the drive to the logic board. Do the same as above then if the system runs OK with the new drive connected externally install it in the system and see if it boots. If it does you are good to go. If it doesn't then it is more then likely the cable that hs failed.
I would suggest you also SAVE a copy of that download of Mt Lion and create a USB install drive from it using Lion Disk Maker, once you get your system up and running.

  • Returned MacBook Pro, bought 24-inch iMac!

    Hi all,
Those who have seen my recent posts (mostly in the MacBook Pro forum, but I did place one here too), will know that I have been having one or two problems moving up from my 1.9GHz G5 iMac. However, after quite a big reply to my recent post in this section of the forum, I have decided to return my MacBook Pro and go back to a desktop machine. Today (after having another play with it at the Apple Retail Store in Meadowhall, Sheffield), I was totally sold (and blown away by) the new 24-inch iMac.
I was standing there next to 24-inch iMac, MacBook Pro and MacBook (black and white versions), and even before I'd tried anything out, there was an add playing for the newly updated iPod Nano range on all the machines. I could not believe the display quality on the 24-inch iMac, it was amazing (and seemed even better than the 20" and 17" models that were next to it), when I turned to look at the MacBook Pro, it's display seemed lacking (even though it's still a lot brighter than the old PowerBook G4). Then, I started playing about with some applications, such as Logic. It was then that I saw that as much as I really wanted to be portable (and have a machine I could take around with me), the desktop machine was out perfoming the MBP substantially (thanks to the desktop machine having a 7200RPM drive (always good for music apps) and double the memory).
I turned to the assistant and said "I'll take one" (she then scared me by saying that she didn't know if she had any in stock, as it's become the store's most popular model in the last few weeks). I was lucky, they had one and I left the shop a very happy man indeed! I really cannot recommend the new 24-inch iMac enough. I've been using it at home for a few hours now and I have to say I wish I'd bought this in the first place...oh, and no stuck pixels and no strange humming noise from the display when you turn the brightness down...which I am also very very pleased about.
If you haven't checked out one of these wonderful new iMac's yet, you really owe it to yourself to do so as soon as possible!

I bought my 24" the night before the new iMac update. I even read the rumor mills of MacRumors and Appleinsider. So why did I buy it the night before? When I came home from work, my Vista machine which I always keep running 24/7 is frozen, so I rebooted and it crashed again on restart. That was the last straw that broke the camels back. I was just tired of all the wasted reboot, shutdown, and freeze problems that I could have saved with a Mac. The local Apple Store was out of the $799 mac minis which was probably a clue of an impending update, but MacRumors and AppleInsiders usually report depleted inventory in the past but didn't this time which got me thinking it won't happen. Oh well. I guess the $170 restocking fee is a biggie, but I guess I can refund the Applecare to cut the damage down.
Another option I'm thinking is to just return the iMac and get the $799 mini and be done with it. That makes eating the loss of $170 restock fee more digestible.
Third option is to call Support and ask for a refund of the difference. The 24" iMac in the refurb section of the site is listed as 28% off. So that would be nice to get such a big deduction.

The first thing you should do with a second-hand computer is to erase the internal drive and install a clean copy of OS X. How you do that depends on the model, and on whether you already own another Mac. If you're not sure of the model, enter the serial number on this page. Then find the model on this page to see what OS version was originally installed.
    1. You don't own another Mac.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.4 or 10.5, you need a boxed and shrink-wrapped retail Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6) installation disc, which you can get from the Apple Store or a reputable reseller — not from eBay or anything of the kind. If the machine has less than 1 GB of memory, you'll need to add more in order to install 10.6. I suggest you install as much memory as it can take, according to the technical specifications.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.6, you need the installation media that came with it: gray installation discs, or a USB flash drive for some MacBook Air models. If you don't have the media, order replacements from Apple. A retail disc, or the gray discs from another model, will not work.
To boot from an optical disc or a flash drive, insert it, then reboot and hold down the C key at the startup chime. Release the key when you see the gray Apple logo on the screen.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.7 or later, you don't need media. It should boot into Internet Recovery mode when you hold down the key combination option-command-R at the startup chime. Release the keys when you see a spinning globe.
    2. You do own another Mac.
If you already own another Mac that was upgraded in the App Store to the version of OS X that you want to install, and if the new Mac is compatible with it, then you can install it. Use Recovery Disk Assistant to create a bootable USB device and boot the new Mac from it by holding down the C key at the startup chime. You will need the Apple ID and password that you used to upgrade. Note that if your other Mac was never upgraded in the App Store, you can't use this method.
Once booted from the disc, the USB device, or Internet Recovery, launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the internal drive — not any of the volume icons nested beneath it. In the Partition tab, select the default options: a GUID partition table with one data volume in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format. This operation will permanently remove all existing data on the drive, which is what you should do.
After partitioning, quit Disk Utility and run the OS X Installer. When the installation is done, the system will automatically reboot into the Setup Assistant, which will prompt you to transfer the data from another Mac, its backups, or from a Windows computer. If you have any data to transfer, this is usually the best time to do it.
You should then run Software Update and install all available system updates from Apple. If you want to upgrade to a major version of OS X newer than 10.6, get it from the Mac App Store. Note that you can't keep an upgraded version that was installed by the previous owner. He or she can't legally transfer it to you, and without the Apple ID you won't be able to update it in Software Update or reinstall, if that becomes necessary. The same goes for any App Store products that the previous owner installed — you have to repurchase them.
If the previous owner "accepted" the bundled iLife applications (iPhoto, iMovie, and Garage Band) in the App Store so that he or she could update them, then they're linked to that Apple ID and you won't be able to download them without buying them. Reportedly, Apple customer service has sometimes issued redemption codes for these apps to second owners who asked.
If the previous owner didn't deauthorize the computer in the iTunes Store under his Apple ID, you wont be able to  authorize it under your ID. In that case, contact iTunes Support.
